Food is great. Service is awesome. Either eating in or having a party catered, this is a go-to place.

My parents and I went on a long bike ride this morning on the Columbia Trail and ended up in Califon on a hunt for breakfast. We got there at 8:45 and saw that Bex Kitchen opened for brunch at 9 so we rode around a few more minutes and came back. It seemed that the second the clock hit 9, the town came alive and EVERYONE was eating here! We parked our bikes and suddenly a ton of people with dogs and riding bikes strolled up. Adorable place with outdoor seating and clearly caters to the type of customers they had - large water bowl for dogs, a water cooler for riders to refill bottles. The food was simple, fresh, and delicious! We're looking forward to stopping by again next Saturday on our ride. read more

Fantastic spot to stop on s bike ride along the Columbia Trail. It's jus a block from the trail in the town of Califon. Great healthy options. Breakfast served all day. We shared an egg and avocado open faced toast to start and it was delicious. They have amazing bread here. We even took a turkey and avocado sandwich with us for a picnic along the gorge at the end of our ride. Service was friendly and efficient. Prices were very reasonable! I've never been here for breakfast or lunch, as it is a bit of a drive from my home. But I have attended their monthly Supper club several times, and I have to say it is one of the best kept secrets around. Food is fresh and prepared extremely well. Service is attentive but not overbearing. I will make it for lunch or breakfast one day due to the quality of the dinners. read more

My friends and I have stopped here occasionally over the last few years when our cycling trips takes us that way and we have always been totally amazed at the great tasting, very well presented, mostly healthy food with friendly service. Not sure why there ratings are not better, but I will continue to go there whenever I can. I wish it were closer to where we live. read more

The staff was incredibly sweet and informative, helped me make three outstanding decisions. I got two meals a prosciutto sandwich which had this delicious fig jelly on it and also a spinach and gouda keesh. I got a quinoa and mango turmeric curry cold salad to go which was my dinner that night. If you want to eat something local, affordable, healthy, homemade, and smart check out Bex Kitchen. It is extremely refreshing to finally have some options around the Califon/Long Valley area. You'd be hard press to find gourmet breakfast/lunch meals around town that are sensitive to the gluten free, vegetarian/vegan lifestyles. From pastries and cakes to fresh farmer's market veggies, everything they make is worth tasting. Probably their most adventurous items are their soups that comprise of cold fruit-base soups to classic hot and hearty soups. Like I said, there's really no other place around like Bex Kitchen. I'm not going to lie - the fare can get a little heavy on the pocket but I feel pretty refreshed and satisfied (not stuffed) after I finish a meal made by this fine establishment. read more

Cute, clean, charming setting. Went for lunch there with the kids as part of a Columbia Trail adventure. Everything was tasty and fresh. I'm not sure that anyone ended up actually eating what they ordered--when the food came up, we swapped, since we were all more interested in the looks of what was on someone else's plate--but everyone was happy with their meal. It was a slow day at Bex...not many customers at the time of our visit, but also seemed to take a long time to get our orders. This seemed to be a place where you order at the counter and pick up at the counter--at least that is what we did. Staff at the counter seemed friendly enough. We'd go back--great stop when you're exploring the area or need to take a break from your hike/bike/run/whatever on the trail. read more

Bex Kitchen provides superb food and coffee in a pleasant small town. You would be hard pressed to find better food in the area and it is the only place with excellent coffee, which they take pride in. From soup to pastries Bex is great and worth stopping by to enjoy. Bex Kitchen certainly charges A LOT for their low-quality food. Everything is frozen, nothing fresh. The wait staff is inattentive. Mediocre at best. Every time I have eaten there I have been unimpressed with everything about this place. Califon is a great place to be but Bex Kitchen does not live up to its standards. Finally, a restaurant in the area that has a light sophisticated menu as opposed to the usual fare found in most of the local pizza and strip mall eateries! Stopped in for late lunch for the first time, very cute place right on The Columbia Trail. I had the grilled cheese - AMAZING (Gruyere with fig jam and arugula), friends had the jerk chicken sandwich (excellent) and the quiche with fruit (very good). Delicious drink choices and friendly service. Lots of healthy options and grain salads. A bit pricey but worth it, and since the food is made to order be patient! They also have baked goods to go and some gourmet items for sale like nut butters and Saltopia Salts. Definitely worth the stop, we will be back. read more

We discovered this place through Yelp while in the area prior to attending a local event. We were mildly disappointed in our choice given that when we first entered it seemed to be disorganized and in a frantic mode. We weren't sure where we were to be seated and there was not any signage or anyone to assist us. We finally just plopped ourselves down at an available table and waited for a server to appear. It soon became apparent that's not the way it's done here. You are expected to go the the counter, make your food choices, and pay. Silly us. The food items appear to be freshly prepared so it took some time for ours to arrive along with a thermos for two of quite good coffee. The eggs Benedict (with ham or salmon) was tasty, though we were not convinced that the hollenandaise was home made. The BEX Burrito was tasty and plentiful. Overall our visit was pleasant, thought the busy firehouse breakfast we spotted on our way out of town did appear quite inviting! read more

Bex is hands down the best brunch we've ever had. My husband and I moved from NYC and and miss having amazing food on every corner so when we found this place we couldn't be happier. We also had part of my daughters baptism catered by Bex and everyone raved about the food. It gets super busy in the summer with all the bikers but it's worth the wait. read more

BEX kitchen is the perfect place to catch up with old friends, or bring the family for fresh & scrumptious home made food in a warm inviting atmosphere! PROS- Soups are always fresh and delicious! I am a big soup fan, and can always count on stumbling into BEX for a hot bowl of soup. If i don't like the soup of the day, their chilli is AWESOME! Their AMAZING short rib sandwich is my favorite thing, warm with gooey cheese served over a fresh baguette with sweet onions, holly cow! The waitresses are always so sweet and informative, eager to make their customers happy Bex is one of the few restaurants who strive to create items that appeal to everyone. For instance, they have options for vegans, people who cant have gluten and for people who love comfort food and people who LOVE desserts :-) Cons: I understand that it is a small establishment, and customer service cannot always be to my liking; however, when I call ahead for an order, my wish is that it is ready by the time I get there. There have been a few occasions when I have called and when I arrive they have not even started my order. To alleviate the situation, the staff is always more than willing to make my wait a pleasant one- which I appreciate, but I do wish they would create a more fluid system so I would not have the frustration at all. Generally it is easy to come into BEX and find an option for my children, however, due to the fact that they have such a limited menu each season, I also wish they had a KID friendly menu or on their menu have a few items specifically for kids; ie: cheese quesadilla, peanut butter and jelly etc. My children love their Sunday brunch items, and most of the time can find something they like, I would just appreciate if it was a bit easier. ALSO: KK from Cali, Their coffee is from a local brewer and it costs a lot to have that specific coffee in the store. I personally have been to that local brewer and can understand their reasoning for not wanting to hand out free coffee. Good coffee ain't cheap! read more

This is always our go to cafe for our bike rides along the Colombia Trail. Never disappointed. Avocado toast, quiche, jerk chicken, salads and spinach ricotta croissant. Friendly service (tho a little pricey) and a quaint store with a water cooler outside so we could refill our bike water bottles. read more

went in for lunch today with my mother as I wanted to take her here since I was home for a week from MA and thought it would be a nice treat. We came in on a Wednesday afternoon and ordered the Asian noodle salad and a chicken salad sandwich which both were good but the service was awful... We saw at least two other tables get there food before us and they came in AFTER we ordered...... we waited 25 minutes for two already prepared salads..... We almost got up and left before the women at the counter suddenly realized we were walking out and told us immediately that our food was coming now.... Also not to mention it was slightly expensive..... 28 bucks for two salads and two sodas..... not really all that worth it..... read more

I stopped here for lunch while on a bicycle ride along the Columbia Trail which passes about 100 feet from Bex Kitchen's front door. The location, menu, price, outdoor seating, and ambiance are all excellent. I enjoyed the "side sampler", a selection of three of the side dishes. By intent or coincidence, these were all meatless. I'm neither a vegan nor a vegetarian, and I found the meal thoroughly satisfying. Had I wanted it, I could have added chicken. There's a range and variety on the menu that I look forward to trying on future visits. Plenty of desserts will tempt you. I had an apple-cheesecake: delightful! read more

Went into Bex Kitchen on Friday afternoon and COULD NOT get waited on! Granted I only wanted a coffee and a couple desserts to go, but I stood there with money in hand while one wait staff after another (I counted at least 3) behind the counter went about their business without ever even acknowledging that I was there (it's a SMALL place). I NEVER expect a restaurant worker or sales clerk to drop everything to wait on me (I once did restaurant work, so I'm very empathetic). I'm patient, but at least have the common courtesy to acknowledge a customer. After being ignored, then watching 3 patrons paying for their lunch checks, long after I was in line waiting without acknowledgement, I decided to leave. I simply walked a half block down the street to Rambo's for coffee and a danish. Every cafe in the shop space that Bex now occupies has gone under and with lack of service or attention like this, Bex may be the next casualty. I feel strongly about supporting local business but I will never go back. read more
