First stop in Dublin. Arrived midmorning, and despite this being a busy tourist destination, we were seated immediately without a reservation! The atmosphere was cute and cozy. Our server was kind and attentive. The tea and food were all great, no complaints. We ordered the Irish breakfast and the eggs Benedict. On the eggs Benedict, the egg was perfectly poached and the ham was crispy. Although we didn't order pastries, they looked amazing! Will definitely return on our next trip to Dublin. read more

Our first meal in Dublin was a full Irish breakfast to share at Bewley's Cafe at the recommendation of a friend. The meal included Kelly's of Newport thick cut dry-cured back bacon, Granby's pork sausages and white pudding, Putóg black pudding, Irish free-range poached eggs, slow-roasted herbed tomatoes, and Bewley's brown soda bread. It was a new experience for us so we decided to share it since we weren't sure what to expect. While I admit, we didn't finish it, we did try a bit of everything, and I'm glad we experienced it. Also while we were here we ordered The Mary Cake to share which is described as a Bewley's classic since the 1950s including rich chocolate ganache, soft sponge layer dipped in pure Valrhona Ariaga dark chocolate, and topped with a thin marzipan disc. It was perfection! Fun fact: Bewley's donates €1 from the sale of every Mary Cake to the Irish Red Cross. To drink I ordered a Calypso (Tia Maria) boozy coffee cocktail (which had a fun presentation and was also very tasty) to give myself a wakeup as our flight was a redeye and before we left I also ordered a takeaway ginger & lemongrass tea. The restaurant was busy just about the entire time we were there, and our waitress was super friendly as well. This is a vibrant and trendy place on Grafton Street that is ideal for breakfast and afternoon tea. We have eaten here on many visits to Dublin and I'm surprised at myself that I haven't yet reviewed it. The food is delicious. They have perfected their poached eggs. After flying overnight from Boston to Dublin, simply put we needed some good coffee. But why stop there? What if you could find some great coffee with some amazing food options, as well? Well, thanks to Bewley's Cafe we did just that. Bewley's is a great, expansive cafe and the coffee certainly did the trick. It was fresh and brewed perfectly and helped to clean off the cobwebs. Each one of us went with a different breakfast option and not a single complaint was lodged. I went with the scone of the day which was a brilliant raspberry scone and the yogurt parfait which had fresh yogurt, a berry compote, fresh berries and granola expertly displayed in the cup that was fresh and tasted excellent. As I looked around the table, I would have opted for any of the other options that others in the party selected as every single item looked perfect. The atmosphere of Bewley's is that of an upscale European cafe of years gone by forest green wallpaper with gold Asian inspired motifs accented by magnificent stained glass windows designed by Harry Clarke 1928 combined with the tile floors and wood accents make the interior spectacular and worth 5 stars and a visite alone. The service was prompt and amenable. The food we had was all decent. The portions were ferocious and the quality excellent however not Michelin star. I saw one of their hot chocolates and it was the size of a pint of Guinness. If it weren't for the overall atmosphere I'd rate the food a 3. They were open on New Year's morning and the wait for a table wasn't too terrible. Our standards weren't very high that day, since it was a holiday, and most places were still shuttered that early. We did walk up and down Grafton Street, checking out the other breakfast/brunch options (limited) before finally walking into Bewley's. The entrance was stiflingly hot due to the fireplace and overworked central heating. The hostess stand was un-tended, and there were three large groups kind of milling around in front of us. We split up - hubs went to stand in what we thought was the line while I went to try to find someone to help us and the other groups that came in behind us. Once a lady did finally come out, she went to each group in an order that only made sense to her, granting tables to groups that came in last ahead of the groups that had been standing there for a while. One man from a group behind us angrily challenged the lady's system, to which she basically said, "you don't like it, you can leave." We were about to take her up on that (even though that sentiment wasn't directed at us) when another lady came out and told us she had a table for two upstairs that we could take. The second floor turned out to be a bit small, but we had a table on the rail, overlooking the mass of people we'd just left. The waitress was nice enough, but she seemed a bit stressed. I overheard her telling another waitress that they hadn't expected the morning to be quite so busy, so I guess that accounts for that. We both ordered the Bewley's Breakfast (their version of a Full Irish Breakfast), and I ordered us a pot of their signature coffee (doing so gives you just over two cups worth, which makes better fiscal sense than ordering two cups alone). The food turned out to be quite tasty, despite the long wait for it. I would actually say that this was my favorite Irish breakfast of our trip, though my husband's opinion would differ. I enjoyed everything on the plate, including their soda bread, which was dense yet light, with a nice oat/grain flavor. The sausage links had a good meaty flavor, with a nice snap to the skin. The eggs were scrambled - I think that's the first time I've seen that in an Irish breakfast - and the bacon was both moist and crispy. The two roasted cherry tomatoes added a nice acidic and almost sweet flavor to the plate overall, and I really enjoyed their black and white puddings. If it wasn't for the terrible greeting when first walking in, I would have given this place 5 stars. Loved this place! The interior was particularly gorgeous. The service was great, our hostess was absolutely lovely. The homemade scones are incredible and large enough to almost be an entire meal. My only qualm was that the breakfast menu is not great for somewhat picky eaters, I had avocado toast that was unnecessarily spicy and they could not remove the chili from it. Perhaps the Irish palette is more attuned to spice than mine! Overall though would recommend this place for brunch, ambience and service are wonderful and if you aren't a picky eater you will certainly enjoy it. read more

There a an ample number of tables on three levels, including limited seating on a second level open terrace. Handsome wooden paneled walls and a black & white marble tiled floor. Very reminiscent of a classic Italian restaurant / bakery. Open for high end sweets & beverages all day. The menu offers a lighter fare of options from the kitchen for breakfast, brunch and lunch. We were in for lunch and "light was right" given our eating habits over the past days. Irish Smoked Salmon on fresh brown bread with capers, thinly slice onion, sour cream, and a side garden salad. Other dishes served, Seafood Stew with whipped potato, Ham and Brie sandwich, and gluten free Penne Pasta with house made tomato sauce. Our server, was extremely helpful and even offered other suggestions around Town with Gluten friendly menu's - as she was GF, too. "You don't go to Dublin without stopping in Bewley's." That's been engrained in me since I was a kid. After all Bewley's is Ireland's most iconic café and tea house. I needed an afternoon tea today so I knew right where to head. As busy as this place is, everyone is friendly. There are three levels for dining/drinking and each has its own atmosphere. I prefer the ground floor because it has the most buzz. And it has one of the most beautiful stained-glass windows by the legendary Harry Clarke that I have ever seen in my life. Bewley's always has a nice assortment of teas but today an Irish Afternoon Tea was the perfect choice. Of course there are no tea bags used here - only high quality loose tea leaves. To accompany the tea I couldn't decide between two of my favorites - their famous Cherry Bun or their famous Almond Bun. So I got both. Both are so tasty but by a whisker, I will vote the Almond Bun the top tea cake in Dublin. The addictive almond paste inside the bun solidified the win. Of course Bewley's is all decorated for Christmas and on the top level as a charity benefit they are displaying a series of amazing dioramas with hundreds of figures and objects. It was tea time for us here in Dublin, and my local friend wanted to make sure that she took us to a spot where she used to work at years ago. My personal goal was to have a nice brunch with a scone and tea, and Bewley's Cafe was certainly able to deliver. Located in a popular shopping district in Dublin, Bewleys gets packed. Apparently they underwent a recent renovation and locals are coming back out to see the new place. When we arrived on a Friday afternoon, the entire cafe was packed. We didn't have to wait more than 15 minutes for a table so definitely worth some patience. We each ordered a lunch sandwich with our own pot of tea. I went for a Lemon & Elderflower tea (€2.90) as well as their Smoked Irish Salmon (€9) with a small side salad. Oh, and I couldn't forget the scone that I wanted as well with cream and jam. I really enjoyed the sandwich. It came in a dark, sesame bun with a healthy portion of tasty smoked salmon. Great for those that enjoy bagel and lox, as you'll find it very similar to their sandwich. My tea was very nice with one kettle serving two cups. As for my scone, I did wish it was a little bit warmer, but it certainly got the job done. All in all, Bawley's is a fine place for an afternoon tea if you are willing to wait out crowds and be in a rather bustling environment. Don't expect to sit down to do work like other cafe's. We went the day before Christmas, and there was a line with a 20 minute wait, but they had an interactive band playing festive music while we wait, so it became the funnest wait ever! It is a two story place, and we were seated on the second floor. We ordered a coffee, tea, and some goodies. The tea was especially good. The wait staff was so friendly and accommodating. It was just a fun place. Some of the tables are close together, so we wound up having a nice conversation with a man and his young son sitting next to us. Heard about Bewley's from a Three Perfect Days Dublin article I read, and it lived up to the hype. I waited until 1000 to sit in the James Joyce room, and the gorgeous Dublin weather allowed me to sit on the balcony overlooking Grafton Street. It was sublime. I started with a Ham & Gruyere Croissant that was excellent. I opted for a fruit pastry thingy that was a twice folded croissant with a cream custard and fresh fruit melange. However they did it, and whatever they did, they nailed it. Both dishes were on point. Well made espresso and a standard cup of coffee, but very fresh, and a cool thing they do with bottomless bottled water. I prefer sparkling water, and instead of selling me one bottle and calling it quits, Bewley's provides a bottomless service for one price that allows a full grown person like me to hydrate aplenty before a long day walking in Dublin. Great tea place in Grafton Street. I wasn't too hungry but needed to get some nourishment so I ordered a hot tea (of course) and a seasonal scone. The seasonal scone was raspberry and it came with a side of jam, clotted cream, and butter. The scone was large and very crumbly but in a good way! It felt and tasted fresh! The scones in the states don't compare and I never order them there but here, they are large and fluffy and delicious! The tea I got was lemon & elderflower. It was ok. A bit strong in flavor and I actually needed sugar, which is rare for me to add. There was a guy who was overseeing the section I was sitting in and he was very nice and friendly, no issues there. But there were a group of girls sitting next to me and he kept watching them and kinda seemed like he was trying to rush them since they were finished with their meals, didn't want dessert, and asked for the bill. I can see why Bewley's Café on Grafton Street is one of Europe's most renowned coffee and tea emporiums. The coffee is incredibly good!!! Bewley's Cafe is a household name in Ireland. The Bewley family moved from France to Ireland in the 18th century and entered the tea trade in 1835. In the late 19th century they expanded into the coffee trade and opened two cafes in Dublin, Ireland. Ernest Bewley opened the Grafton Street Café in 1927. The Bewley's Café on Grafton Street oozes sophisticated ambiance. This former English grammar school was completely refurbished. The café design was inspired by exotic oriental tearooms in Asia, Egyptian architecture, and French and Austrian cafes. The façade was inspired by the discovery of Tutankhamen's Tomb in 1922. The most stunning feature inside the café are the six beautifully handcrafted stained glass windows. The Grafton Street location developed over time as the hub of the literary, cultural, artistic, architectural and social life of Dublin. Irish literary and artistic figures, including James Joyce, Patrick Kavanagh, Samuel Beckett and Sean O'Casey were all regular customers at Bewley's. The only reason I held back a star is because the service was extremely slow. We told the hostess we were only ordering coffee, but she sat us in the main restaurant with everyone who was dining.
