I understand that Bewley's is a staple part of Dublin life, and indeed Irish life, but for a mere coffee and scone, it is ridiculously expensive. We paid circa €20 for 2 coffees, a small slice of cake and a scone. The quality of all was decent but nothing spectacular to warrant such a price. The scone was ok, I've had nicer for much cheaper, which leads me to conclude that the extra profit slapped on to it is just so you can say you had it there. It's a very pretty building and is somewhat iconic but personally, I definitely wouldn't rush back unless it was for touristic value. read more

A really lovely cafe with lovely staff. We have been there 3 times through out our stay in Dublin. Two times for breakfast and once for tea time. They have absolutely great teas and cakes. Especially the Mary Cake is a must-try! Chocolate mouse with a bit of marmelade. They also have a good selection of tea. Each of the ordered teas is enough for two mugs. You can also order a second mug and get some more water for a second infusion for free. Definitely worth a visit, either for breakfast or for tea time! read more

This place is wonderful for brunch. Close to the River of Liffey so it's accessible to many of the main streets to explore and shop at stores. Highly recommended the pastries especially their freshly baked croissant. It was large, flaky outside, and soft and yummy inside. The Irish breakfast was moderate and fulfilling. If you want something small their pancakes were delicious. The atmosphere itself felt upper classes and fancy with its live music but it was definitely welcoming with many conservations among the other patrons in the restaurant. If you don't have time to sit down, don't worry. The restaurant also has a bakery shop at the front were you could take pastries to go. My friends and I after enjoying our meal we stopped by and got some croissants to go. read more

My boyfriend and I had high expectations and Bewley's did not disappoint. The food was exquisite. I had the tarragon pie and an Irish coffee, which was the best I've had. For some reason, whenever I go to Ireland, I'm attracted to Bewleys. And not any Bewley's; it has to be the Grafton Street cafe. There isn't anything special about the food. Irish breakfast of grilled tomato, black and white pudding, fried eggs, and toast can be had at almost any place that serves breakfast. I guess I'm attracted to the atmosphere and the feeling that I'm on Grafton Street, a major hub of shopping in Dublin. And besides, no pub is open this early in the morning. This has become a permanent fixture of Grafton St. and a place that serves a great lunch or breakfast accompanied by a good coffee or tea. I was a knackered the last time I came here and found myself having two cappuccinos, both of which were fantastic. I was surprised to learn they served a spicy lamb salad with tzatziki sauce and decided to have it since it seemed like one of the healthier options on the menu. While I didn't finish the entire thing it did hit the spot and I'd consider ordering it again in the future. The only downside to Bewley's is that on busy shopping days it can get absolutely packed and finding a table can be a bit of a nightmare. I almost feel bad for rating this old, traditional Dublin cafe only 2 stars but indeed - I've experienced better. Recommended for sitting down with a coffee or tea, chitchatting about the latest, and for people-watching alike. Good selection of sweets and bakery stuff on the ground floor. Waiter service is attentive and very friendly in both coffee area and restaurant. Not so recommended the restaurant. I've tried it out a couple of times, this time I ordered a burger, seafood chowder, and drinks. The burger was dry and the taste of the meat patty reminded me of what I got from Walmart a couple of months ago. The seafood chowder also disappointed as it was more like a chowder without seafood. I used to come to Bewley's quite often, it's such a pretty, quaint cafe. I've eaten and had many coffees and hot chocolate here. The top floor is a theatre, holding many different types of gigs - I saw Nina Nesbitt there once, it's a very intimate venue, perfect for small gigs. The interior of Bewleys has a lovely old world charm when you first walk in. We were seated straight away by a friendly member of staff but the evening went down hill from there. The seats themselves are velvet and definitely need a good wash and the toilets downstairs are in need of a major renovation. I am not surprised the cafe is soon closing for a refurb! I ordered the superfood salad which I though sounded delish-broccoli, chickpeas, peppers, french beans, carrots, cucumber, celery, raisins, lime juice, sea salt and extra virgin oil. There was no sign of any oil or lime juice. And the vegetables were cut up so small i struggled to pick them up with my fork. There was no dressing that I could taste. Only really small bits of raw vegetables. I ordered "cajun" chicken as an extra with the salad and that was a really bad decision. The chicken was so hard and dry it was such a let down and definitely no cajun seasoning. The pot of tea I ordered was good and the girls enjoyed their wine otherwise I was less than impressed. read more

I'm going to give two ratings: 4 Star - I go in once a week on my own after work and order a tea and a scone. I usually sit up front, sometimes down back, and I'm always served promptly. The tea is delish, the scone is ever-so-delightful and the little pot of jam makes me happy. I sit there and attempt to look intelligent while doing the Simplex. Occasionally someone next to me is also doing the Simplex and is getting nowhere.. ahhhh, then I make little happy chirpy noises as I gleefully fill in the squares. I pay at the till and walk out, feeling refreshed and full of pep. 3 Star - If you go in to actually eat food, it can be a bit hit and miss. I used to like the tuna melts but haven't had one in ages. We had breakfast here with a friend over the xmas break and while it was ok, it wasn't amazing. Same with most food I've ever had there, OK, but fairly standard. The coffee they give you with the breakfast is filter (which is ok) but its in a tiny cup. Why, its filter coffee?? Give a decent mug of it ya cheapo's! read more

I got the GF chocolate fudge cake and it was a bit too sweet for my liking, in a synthetic kind of way. The setting is amazing it feels like stepping into the past. To be honest they may have an awesome gluten free menu but I was meeting my friends new baby and just picked the first thing that was gluten free on the menu. Situated on the top floor of Bewley's Café, the climb up the three staircases to the theatre can certainly help work up one's appetite. The small theatre is an interesting aspect of the café, and is unique in the city. Featuring lunchtime shows, and the occasional evening showing, Bewley's Café Theatre plays host to hour long (on average) plays and one man shows. Don't expect big names or well known drama; the space is usually occupied with small productions of varying quality. The play includes what is described as a 'light lunch' - that is, soup and bread. On the occasion of my visit, this soup was mushroom and potato, lukewarm, and below par compared to the usual soup that is served in other parts of the café. My companions and I seated ourselves with difficulty at a table at the back of the room; with difficulty due to the cramped nature of the space and the small tables, upon which we squeezed our bowls of greyish soup. The idea is that one consumes the 'light lunch' prior to the beginning of the show, but due to the fact that people tend to eat at different speeds, the first ten minutes were marred by the clinking of spoons and slurp of mushroom and potato broth. The stage itself is a mere raised dais in the corner of the room, and due to the haphazard and tight arrangement of tables and chairs, I found that I had to constantly crane my neck in order to see the onstage action. The play itself - Poe Show - was as mediocre and lukewarm as the soup. Overall the entire experience was rather disappointing, and at €15 per ticket, an overpriced one to boot. Tickets can be secured informally; by queuing outside the doors of the theatre about ten minutes before they open. Bewley's Café Theatre is a singular experience, and an interesting diversion for an hour and a half, but I would recommend one either spends their €15 on a good, slap up lunch or else on a matinee ticket for a good dramatic production in another theatre; satisfaction is much more likely this way. read more

We've been here a few times over the years and our experience ranges from OK - Good. It's a lovely Dublin institution but not extraordinary. Our most recent experience was a couple of weeks ago when we wanted to take my cousin and our kids out for a no-fuss dinner. While the food was good, the portions were very small and I have to say the menu was very limited. The service was not great - the waitress was very busy and distracted, forgot our drinks, and was not very inclined to serve our children. I had the smoked salmon open faced sandwich and it was delicious - just very very small. I think in future I'll only stop by Bewley's again for coffee and cake, and probably just with adults. read more

Besides being one of the only places open on Grafton Street in the early hours of the morning, they serve up a mean bagel with poached eggs and bacon. Warning- it's messy. Their lattes are also pretty amazing. Bewleys Cafe is the oldest Cafe in Dublin. Its an institution in Dublin and has a prime spot on Grafton Street where you can sit in the window and watch the world go by. You can smell the coffee and cake from outside if the door is open and while the front is a small cafe where you can get cake and coffee to take away or stay and enjoy it, there is a big restaurant at the back and its beautiful. Upstairs for me however is the Gem. Bewley's lunch-time Theatre. Ive been here several times and I love it. Rude and slow. It took over twenty minutes to receive coffee, tea, scone and a piece of cake. Both food items were pre made, all they would've needed was hot water which I'm sure they have at all times. There's absolutely no reason for it to take that long. The woman next to us only ordered a tea and hers also took twenty minutes. We got up to leave and miraculously our order arrived. The whole time we waited, Danielle our server, just kept grinning and laughing at us when she could see we were annoyed. It got two stars because it is pretty inside and the host and hostess were nice. I assume they rely on tourists who are only going to come in once. Because their business can't be coming from locals by treating people like that. Food and drink weren't even worth the wait. Very disappointing. read more

A lot of Irish people, especially middle-aged people, were upset to hear that Bewley's was closing down a couple years ago. But it didn't stay closed for long. Since it's been revamped to include Cafe Bar Deli, business is steady and everyone is happy that this Irish company still exists. The reason for its popularity has mainly to do with nostalgia. It's been around for 80 years. I wouldn't rate the coffee or tea higher than any other coffee shop but for atmosphere, it gets top score. It's also wonderfully located on one of the busiest shopping streets so the vibe inside is always upbeat and fast paced. Whether you're seated downstairs or upstairs, you can people watch through the large windows. The food is pricier than its competition despite the fact that the menu is quite similar. It makes toasted sandwiches, soups, salads and baked goods. Bewley's also serves alcohol and is open late. But who wants to go for a night on the town in a place that smells like roasted beans and pastries? Can you imagine sipping your Cosmopolitan next to an old lady who is eating a scone? The food looked delicious though I did not partake in an actual meal since we ad just eaten a few hours earlier. The lighting is low and the atmosphere is quite charming and it would be a perfect date place. I highly recommend stopping in at Bewley's if in Dublin. Big tip if in Dublin: DON"T DRIVE!!!! I hate to over-use the term 'Dublin institution' but I think I'm right in saying that Bewley's is one. It's the place where buskers, homeless fellas, students, grannies, harassed mums and their squealing kids all went for a cuppa and sticky bun when in town. It's the place where debs students went for breakfast after their big night, eyes smudged and shawls trailing behind them. My mum remembers choosing her sticky bun from an ornate, old-fashioned cake-stand as wide-eyed youngin in Bewleys... Ok, enough reminiscing... Bewley's has changed a lot since the revamp but I think it still retains the right to be called an institution. Pop in, have a tea and sticky bun while soaking up the atmosphere and thinking about how many naughty school children have spent their mornings in there when they should have been at maths (moi? never!). read more

Bewleys recently reopened after a very long renovation period. Over the years it had very much gone the way of many Dublin institutions, it upped its costs, it stripped away many of the people who gave it character, it gave up many of its signature dishes that were quintessential Old Dublin, like its fabulous fried breakfast, cherry buns, eclairs and traditional teas and coffee. It tried very hard to be just like everything else, to be trendy and american (which still somehow seems to be the drive for so many places in Ireland-just you count the starbucks!) To be honest when I heard it was reopening I did rather come at it with my gaurd up, fully ready to write a dreadful review for what I thought would be some ghastly half tourist trap half assed attempt to be Fallon and Byrne. BUT I must say within 10 minutes of being in the place it bagan to transport me to my youth, when Bewleys was still Bewleys. The interior. It has been carefully and all in all quite beautifully renewed, the Harry Clarke windows are where they always were, the original furniture has been reupholstered, the marble top tables are still there and many of the old odds and sods that added to the place.Even the old lift is still there! Where interventions have been made they are in the main successful, with beautiful new marble floors, lovely ironwork and a new mezzanine level that restores some of the grandeur of how the space once was. My only criticism of the interior is the new lights in the ceiling are a bit too extra and a bit too bright, Bewleys was always a place for a more golden light. Now,Staff. They appear to have robbed a lot of the best staff from across Dublin, its strange to walk into a new place and see so many old faces from different Dublin establishments working here, it seems to add to the strangely familiar feel to the place, though I will say was entirely unexpected! The staff are friendly and effective. It was a sensible move on Bewleys part! Though it must be said the top brass who saunters around in a grey suit needs to either smile more or else go full monkey suit if he wont. The food and beverages. They have the good old fashioned mug of coffee back. It is perhaps 10c too expensive at 3 quid, though the going rate for coffee in this part of town unfortunately (that is a general comment on inflation in the city which is terrifying and getting off the point). They have excellent loose leaf tea, far better than the nasty bag of Barrys you used to get in Bewleys before it closed. Of the food I ate, they have pretty nice poached chicken roles-which again has strangely familiar tones of a rather gormet version of a chicken fillet role (another Dublin icon if youre a tourist), it must be said, very tasty. Had an almond bun-which it has to be said is a lot nicer than I remember them. Of the food I saw and heard about. My god the cakes look gorgeous, I think they must have the bakers from the old Paris Bakery on Moore St, they have a proper french patisiery look to them-they are all baked on site, you can see the bakery in the basement beside the jacks, just so ye know!). The very best thing-theyre going to be bringing back the Bewleys Fry Up in the coming months!!! Which I am ecstatic about. Its a 9/10 place, familiar and pleasant. A must do! read more

Whenever I've gone to Bewley's in the past, I always go to the first floor where I enjoy the global female trend of watching all the people below pass by and pass judgement on them. Sometimes even creating interesting little back stories for the. Sad I know but highly amusing. I'm used to going up to Dublin at a lesiurely pace but when mummy dearest drags me up, it's usually at the crack of dawn and I'm not exactly what you'd call an early bird. So a decent breakfast is always my main concern at that hour of the morning. Pancakes are always a good start. Now recently I had my first proper non breakfast meal in Bewley's and I have to say, I was impressed. As a rule of my own, I like lamb preferably on the leg and eaten once in a while as a treat. in my family usually at Easter or special occasions. So I decided I'd swallow my inner nagging voice and try the Spicy Lamb Salad. To put it simply, I didn't want it to stop. It looked good, it tasted good and left my wanting more(in the good sense). Everything that I want from food. When we got the bill, we were happily surprised when we got the bill as the price for three of us all having a meal was reasonably low. My only complaint is that dining up-stairs in the recent heavy summer weather is rather sickening due to the lack of air con and over seating. My advice is to sit on the first floor, close to the windows to take advantage of 1. the breeze and 2. all your busy little minions swarming along Grafton. read more

I wasn't a fan of the old Bewleys really, and I feel kind of whatever about Cafe Bar Deli these days, but I quite like this little cafe in the front. 2 things that are great about it: 1.it's open late, so if you feel like tea and cake after shopping or are looking for a nice place for dessert after a meals it's perfect 2. real cream. I have this horror of "cream" from a can. Bewleys do the real stuff. Aside from that the cakes are pretty good. As for their savoury items, I've only had the soup and it was a bit crap. Almost as I remembered it from years ago except it was smoky and damp 30 years ago, a haven for penniless students and visitors alike. It was gentrified in the early noughties which was a big mistake. Now it's almost come full circle and starting to look a bit down at heel again - and much better for it. Place was teeming on a sunny Saturday morning, mostly tourists clutching guidebooks and maps who, I know, will not have been disappointed. We both had excellent breakfast bagels (bacon and cream cheese; bacon and poached egg), coffees with hot milk - no questions asked - and some excellent people watching. All for less than €20.
