Like many have mentioned, the restaurant targeting towards tourists. I had the seafood chowder. The good: tons of seafood; the meh: salty and not very creamy, also not the freshest seafood chowder I've had. The fish and chips are far, I mean far below average. The fish isn't fresh and the peas are brown instead of green, eww. Service is average. Tips are anticipated unlike other local restaurants. There are way better restaurants in walking distance.
This place had very traditional Irish food, Served in a busy space in Temple Bar area. There was about 4 groups in front of us but because we were only two of us we got a table in about 5min. The food was delicious!! We had the seafood chowder, cottage pie and lamb shank. All excellent and oh so filling. Loved everything about the eats and glad we picked this place with so many choices!
Tiny, old, full of character restaurant on the second floor of a building in Temple Bar. They turn and burn here so don't be dissuaded by a line up the stairs. They told us a 10-minute wait and it was just that. Service is quick and there are waiters buzzing around tending to your needs. A pint of the mother's milk (Guinness) was calling our names. And for my son's first pint in Ireland, he split the G on his first try. IYKYK Meat pie was piping hot! Good sized portion and the veggies were cooked perfectly, a gravy that was delicious, and a topping of mashed potatoes which were perfect. Well done. Son had fish and chips. It was one half of the long cut of a fish. Fried perfectly with decent chips, not too fat. May come back if looking for traditional Irish fare but lots of other places to try here.
We were here 8 years ago...accidentally found it then and the same now as we couldn't remember the name...but we have told everyone we know about our experience in 2017, it was so good! We fell in love with the ambiance and the staff! Last time we all had the fish and chips, vegetable soup, shepherds pie, beef and Guinness stew, drinks (yes...guinness) and desserts. All were so amazing we came here three times! Oh! They had a delish potato stew last time....all over Ireland the potatoe stew seems to have been replaced with potato and leek puree since COVID 19. We are trying different things this time, pasta, salads, cheesy bread, bread pudding, hamburger....and still no potato stew. Wish it would come back to Ireland. We miss it.
Our first dinner in Dublin, the reviews and photos looked amazing was the reason of choosing this place. There was queue when arriving however it was worth the wait as it was small space upstairs. They had all the traditional Irish cuisine including a FULL Flour Free Menu! We had the Famous Irish Lamb Shank and Traditional Irish Stew. They are absolutely delicious and taste buds was more than happy. It felt like pure enjoy eating them. The lamb shank was melting like butter and mind you Irish butter is freaking amazing. The flavor was outstanding. The traditional Irish stew was our favorite dish of all time. We would totally come to this spot. We for sure came back again one last time the night before we had to fly back home. As we didn't know when we will be back. I tried the cottage pie and let me tell you... exquisite and my partner had to get the Irish stew again. Overall, you have to go here :)
My first meal in Dublin. I made a reservation for 5 pm but it wasn't necessary. The restaurant was completely full though at 6 pm when I left. I ordered the Guiness beef stew, which was very tasty. The beef had flavor and the vegetables weren't overcooked. It came with mashed potatoes (or fries) and brown bread and butter. I also got apple crumble which was more like an apple pie and it came with lovely cream and a yellow custard sauce. It was delicious, not as sweet as the ones at home. The staff were all very nice. I thought the prices were reasonable, especially compared to the US. The stew came with a lot of beef.
Located in the temple area, the Old Mill restaurant has some authentic Irish meals in this traditional pub. We ordered the chicken and chips which came with ranch and ketchup on the table 5/5. The Old Mill trio came with garlic cheese bread, chips and a delicious creamy vegetable soup 4/5. Great service from Vanessa and pleasant staff overall. Nice historic decor in the bustling traditional Irish pub.
The Old Mill restaurant is in the crowded and touristy Temple Bar section of Dublin. Typically I try to avoid areas like this for meals and general shopping, since you always get the feeling you're being gouged or not getting the experience you otherwise think you could elsewhere. The Old Mill restaurant is definitely the exception in this case. We waited on a line going down a staircase for around 40 minutes to get in, but the staff were nice enough to give us menus and serve us drinks while we waited. Once we were seated, we got the coddle and lamb shank for our meal. Coddle is definitely a more unique Irish flavor you wouldn't see elsewhere and had some good meaty flavor to it. The lamb shank was an absolute star to me. Served on the bone and so tender that it falls off the bone a fork, served with a side of mashed potatoes and veggies. We also had the death by chocolate cake for dessert which was very rich and heavy on chocolate, so the scoop of vanilla ice cream definitely helps break it up. The only slightly irritation is them pointing out and asking for a tip afterwards. So far, the other restaurants I've gone to on this trip haven't asked, tapped my card, and off we went. So, you have to wonder if that was primarily due to the restaurant's location in the touristy district. Despite this, I would certainly recommend the the Old Mill and will certainly be making a return should I ever return to Dublin.
An incredible vibrant, typical Dublin pub restaurant it's a must go. You're immediately greeted by a lovely server who just wants to help and serve so we started with glass of wine for Deb and a big old Guinness for Peter loved it. Deb had mussels that were fantastic And I had the Guinness beef stew like 4 pounds of it so good and we got our bill gave a nice tip and said goodbye and see you soon. Great night.
This place is located upstairs in the Temple Bar area. The food here is divine. The restaurant is not so big and it gets packed. Prepare for a bit of a wait but it's worth it. The staff here is lovely. When it's busy, you may feel a little rushed to order because they trying to reduce wait time for other guests. I didn't mind and liked how polite everyone was. I definitely recommend this restaurant in Dublin. I plan on returning when I visit Dublin again.
I attempted to go for dinner at the Old Mill on my first night in Dublin but the wait was over an hour when I arrived. I have to say, the service while waiting in line was pretty impressive. There was a guy asking people if they wanted drinks while waiting and made sure to update us on table availability while we waited. I was too hungry to wait too long so I left after about 20 minutes, but I made sure to make a reservation for the following day. When I went back the next night it was even busier than the previous evening due to a couple of very large groups. Again, service was amazing despite the crazy amount of people. I had to wait a few minutes after my reservation time but it was completely fine as I had already looked at a menu in line so I ordered as soon as I sat down. I opted for the seafood chowder and mussels combo - exactly what I was craving! I also started with a pint of Guinness. My food arrived after a very reasonable wait and let me tell you.... it was so good! The chowder was packed with all types of seafood and perfectly seasoned. The mussels were not the best in terms of size, as they were kind of small but cooked well. The broth was exceptional and had some beautiful brown bread on the side to dip in and soak up all that deliciousness. As mentioned, the restaurant was packed so it was pretty noisy but not overwhelming. The staff did an amazing job of manœuvering tables and people to accommodate different size groups and were incredibly efficient at clearing and cleaning tables as people left. It's no wonder this place is so popular; it's not just the location, it's the food and service that make this place worth the visit. Highly recommended!
When I think of beef stew, I think of my mom's homemade version. So one of the things I was most looking forward to in Ireland was trying authentic Irish stew. Our first meal in Dublin was at The Old Mill Restaurant, right in the heart of Temple Bar. It's been serving traditional Irish fare since the 1980s and has become a favorite stop for both locals and visitors looking for classic comfort food. After about a 20-minute wait, we were seated in the warm, inviting dining room. Susan ordered the mussels, one of her favorites, while I went with the Traditional Irish Stew and my daughter chose the Braised Beef & Guinness Stew. Both were exactly what we hoped for: hearty, flavorful, and perfect after a day of sightseeing. I finally understood why the Guinness stew had such a rich, dark color, and I have to admit, I came home a big fan of Irish stew. We finished with the Homemade Bread & Butter Pudding topped with fresh cream and custard, a comforting dessert that was the perfect ending to the meal. Service, atmosphere, value, and food were all five out of five. We also enjoyed chatting with the floor manager, whose pride in the restaurant and his team was obvious. That kind of hospitality made a great meal even more memorable. read more
Hard to find as we passed it & realized it's upstairs! Small single room w/ a standard collection of wall art / signs. Asked to be re-sat & they were happy to let us choose. We asked about the soup flavor & they offered a taste and brought out a huge sample boat. Super cool. I got the cottage pie lunch portion, which is more than I could barely eat. It came with a boat of the sauce /and gravy and meat. Wife got the fish and chips... The fillet was longer than the plate and it came with a mountain of fries, both delicious. Daughter got the creamy vegetable soup and chips. She loved it but couldn't even finish half. All the portions were very generous, nobody finished their meal, too bad we couldn't have taken it back to our hotel. Server was great & funny. Love this place. read more
If you're in the area, The Old Mill Restaurant should be on your list. From the traditional decor to the delicious food, this seems to be a staple spot for an authentic Irish dining experience. Thankfully, when I arrived around 1, one table happened to be opened so no wait for me. A long queue did start soon after though so just be prepared for some wait depending on when you arrive. I ordered the Seafood Chowder and the Guinness Stew. Both were very tasty! The Seafood Chowder had a good amount of seafood and the flavor was hearty but not overly heavy. Same applies to the Guinness Stew. Very hearty with lots of beef chunks but I didn't feel too heavy after eating it. The stew is definitely much different in terms of flavor and the richness (the stew was a lot more rich) but having the contrast of both dishes was ideal. To top it off, dipping the provided soda bread in each of the dishes was an added bonus. The service is very prompt and the staff are friendly. There's a decent amount of tables so turnover shouldn't be too long for those waiting in the queue. Will definitely be back on my next visit to Dublin to try the other dishes! read more

Decently affordable prices and wide offerings of dishes in the heart of Temple Bar area. The stew was bursting with flavor and came in huge portion with mashed potatoes, and I appreciated the mini Irish breakfast option for 10 euros. read more

One of the best fish and chips that we ran across. Once you go up the stairs, you find a quaint, amazing ambience. Photos from years past which give it a wonderful feel and adds to the flavors of the food. Service was quick and friendly. read more

It's a tourist trap. Just know that going in. Pretty steep steps to go up but staff is efficient in getting you seated in a very cozy dining area. I loved the vibes. The staff was swift and friendly. The sides are extra so don't expect to get mash with your stew unless you order it. However, the brown bread was *chefs kiss*. Best I had during my trip. They do ask you to tip fyi. So know that while other local pubs do not. It does get busy but don't give up on it if you want to enjoy the space. read more
The restaurant is located upstairs of a building. It's a pretty small restaurant. The service was quick and friendly. It may have also helped that we came in right before the lunch rush. After we ordered, right before noon, it quickly filled up. Ordered the seafood chowder which was great! I would highly recommend it. Full of seafood and very comforting. The fish and chips were alright. The fried fish was under seasoned. The Irish breakfast was decent and had the classic flavors. read more

The Old Mill immediately feels authentic, boasting a genuine old world feel with its heavy dark wood, cozy lighting, and a real sense of history that makes the atmosphere alone worth the visit. The food here focuses on hearty, traditional Irish fare; I ordered the beef stew, and it was rich, flavorful, and served in a generous, truly satisfying portion--it's just really good, honest food, not gourmet. Service was excellent, as the staff were friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed without being intrusive. For a great blend of cozy ambiance and well-executed, filling meals. read more
Traditional Irish fare in the heart of Temple Bar area. This was our first meal after a long day of traveling and it gave us that comfort we needed so much! Had to start our trip with a traditional Cottage Pie -- with portions large enough to split amongst 2. Comes with a wonderful gravy on the side that really ties the dish together. Be prepared some very flavorful food! Washed it down with a pint of Smithwick's, as one does, and before you know it we were on our way to a pub for some live music. The restaurant is upstairs, with some decently steep stairs, so please be careful! Service was excellent, food was served quickly, and the atmosphere was great. We hear the place gets really packed for dinner service, but we walked right in on a Wednesday at 6:30pm. read more

I was in Dublin only for a few days and wanted to get some authentic Irish food. The old mill is a small spot on the second floor of a busy street. There is a line that goes up the stairs with folks waiting for a table. Luckily we only had about a 10 minute wait, but by the time we were seated the line went down the stairs and out of the door. For appetizers we got some wings and garlic bread which we enjoyed. I got the Guinness beef stew for my entree which was fantastic, and my hubby had the Irish stew which had lamb, and he enjoyed it. I can't remember what my daughter had off of the kids menu but she enjoyed it and it came with vanilla ice cream for her. Definitely a place I would come again while in Dublin! read more

What a charming spot in the Temple Bar area! Due to the location, I was afraid it would be a tourist trap, but honestly it was fabulous. We came in looking for traditional Irish food and landed on the Cottage Pie (like a Shepherd's Pie but with beef instead of lamb). Split between two hungry adults, this was more than enough! It was hearty and warmed our souls on a rainy February evening. The staff was polite and we left completely satisfied. Note the location is on the second level so you have to go up a significant number of steep steps. I wouldn't want to try going back down after more than a single pint! read more

Second time in Dublin and we've avoided Temple Bar area restaurants and pubs prior bc it's a touristy area and prices are higher. However, I really wanted shepherds pie and they received rave reviews. Headed upstairs to the restaurant and we were immediately seated. We each ordered shepherds pie. It arrived hot and plentiful. We probably could have split 1 but as greedy Americans, we each had our own. It was very good. The sauce was more like a dark and thick gravy. I make shepherds pie at home with carrots and peas with whipped potato topper and love mine and so in comparing mine versus Old Mills, I actually like mine better. Theirs had an addl vege I wasn't expecting and now don't recall what it was. I would still recommend Old Mills. While seated, we had the pleasure of chatting w/2 sets of patrons, both American. It's fascinating how friendly Americans are when out of the country but not so much when at home. We loved the decor and historical pieces decorating the walls, esp the Mandela newspaper article. read more

When we arrived there was a slight wait. We were able to grab a Guinness at the bar and the bartender was very quick. We got seated about 10 minutes later, the food wait time was also fast, and our server was able to get us in and out of there. Our meals were wonderful. The cheesy garlic toast was a great appetizer too. By the time we left there was a line down the stairs. I would suggest going early! Good portions and tasty dishes. read more
If you are in the Temple Bar area, you must check out The Old Mill. It serves the traditional Irish dishes that are hearty and good. My fish & chips were better than most fish & chips that I had in Ireland. My wife's mussel & soup were fresh and tasty. The staff was friendly but overwhelmed during this particular dinner time. They are always busy. Therefore, make sure to make a reservation before you go. read more

Despite being in probably the most touristy area of Dublin, this place offers authentic Irish food with a high quality and excellent flavor. We ordered the Braised Beef & Guinness Stew with a side of mashed potatoes, the Dubliner Grilled Beef Burger that comes with a pepper gravy that I still have dreams about, so so good if you, like me, love pepper! Dunk your chips in it and thank me later, and the Cottage Pie. Everything was absolutely delicious and very well served. We had a feast paired with a pint of Guinness beer of course! We ended super full but since we were visiting we couldn't let the opportunity to try their Irish Bailey's Cheesecake pass... and it was a great decision, it was so so good! Staff very friendly and attentive. Place clean, comfortable, and with a cozy atmosphere. If you are visiting Dublin, don't let the long line outside this fabulous restaurant in a second floor in the heart of Temple Bar discourage you from trying it, you won't regret it! The wait is not crazy and it's worth it. read more

Absolutely loved dining at the Old Mill Restaurant while visiting Dublin. On a Wednesday night we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table but it was well worth it. The food was spectacular especially the Guinness Irish beef stew. The live music set a classic and lighthearted Irish pub atmosphere. Highly recommend for the Temple Bar region! read more
Went to Dublin a few months ago and on my first day I arrived hungry and wanting proper Irish food and walking around all the templer bars I found this place thanks to Yelp and it did not disappoint!!! It was super packed and it's not large but it fits a good amount of people who were all enjoying time with family so the vibe is friendly and fun and we got lucky to get seats right away and wow we were blown away at the food especially having theee best fish and chips I've had and it was in Ireland not England lol Service was great too the server was nice and helped out when needed! I will go back here if I ever get back to Dublin read more

Great little whole in the wall Irish restaurant.. The cottage pie is killer, staff is attentive and quick. Lunch special had Guinness at $5.50. Heck yeah, potion size is generous, very good. Walk up the stairs and have a pint and cottage pie. Cheers! read more

Unfortunately, I have to say that The Old Mill is highly overrated and arguably not worth the wait time. After hearing/seeing many great things about this place, I felt obligated to try it out (plus, as a first time visitor to Dublin, I naturally found myself in Temple Bar already). They don't take reservations, so everyone has to wait in line by the entrance to get a spot. Granted we were there at prime dinner time on a weekend, but we ended up standing there waiting for over half an hour to get in. After getting in, we realized this is because the restaurant is actually really small, plus the fact that it's just a popular spot. The interior does have a cozy vibe though with lots of old Irish and Dublin-related memorabilia and decor, which are pretty cool. I felt like I had to go with a classic to really test out this place so ordered the Traditional Fish and Chips (19.95 EUR). I have to say, I was kind of disappointed. It was honestly kind of like fast food quality, as the fish did not have much flavor - the only real flavor just came from the fried coating. The fries were very average. I also tried the Braised Beef and Guinness Stew (19.95 EUR). I think this was better than the fish and chips but still did not stand out to me that much. The staff are pretty friendly and helpful. The service speed was pretty quick (once we got a table). Overall, if you can manage to get in here without much of a wait and are already exploring Temple Bar, then I could see this being a reasonable choice. Otherwise, if there is a long line, I think you might be better off saving your time and looking elsewhere. read more
Amazing traditional Irish restaurant near the river. Our first meal after arriving in Dublin and it was hearty portions of traditional Irish staples served during the lunch hour. I can't explain how good the food in this place is, it's a must try. I will admit that at first I thought it was going to be a tourist trap because of its convenient location but it turned out to be one of the best meals we had while in Dublin. We ordered buffalo wings for an appetizer and they were amazing, we also had ciders to drink them out with and they were great. For our emails my boyfriend got the pie and it was so good. The best mashed potatoes you can think of on top, super hot and delicious under the bed of mashed potatoes. I ordered the stew with butter bread and wow, that stew was absolutely incredible and the bread was fresh and warm. The service was quick and the servers were kind, they gave us candy when we paid. It does get super packed of tourists and the tables are almost on top of each other (that's how close you are to other people eating there) but for delicious food it was worth it in my opinion and if I find myself back in the area I'm for sure coming back to try more things! read more
