He's worked there more than 20 years and had us thoroughly entranced with his personality and charms. Oh yes, there was food: a vegetarian boxtie and a corned beef boxtie. These were more like stews than a classic boxtie. We polished the plates off and finished with dessert. The toffee pudding was perfect; surprisingly the housemade ice cream sandwich had almost no flavor and was disappointing. The Boxty House is one of the few places I think about in my time in Ireland due to my great experience there. Yes, it may be a little pricey, but the Boxty House has tradition rooted in it, and is also a well-known place in Dublin to have traditional Irish cuisine. What we had: -Atlantic Seafood Chowder- comes with stout and treacle bread. There's a nice amount of vegetables (carrots and celery) and two mussels in there. The chowder consistency reminds me of a soup more than a thick chowder. -Gach Rud (Gok-Rudd): Irish lamb stew, Gaelic boxty, corn beef boxty dumplings, boxty bead, and boxty fries. If you want to try a little bit of everything, this is what you should get! I liked the corn beef boxty dumplings the most since it had a soft and chewy texture. -Turkey & Ham Wellington- small portion. -Sticky toffee pudding- The pudding was delicious but the ice cream was the most memorable part of the meal. One thing I noticed is that Khruangbin was playing throughout the restaurant the entire time we were there. No complaints. Whoever was on DJ is a person of taste and kept the good vibes going. Stopped by here on my way to The Temple Bar for some food and it did not disappoint! The chicken boxty had this incredible sauce (always get the sauce) that made the dish creamy and delicious and had some sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Tourist trap. Over priced. Small portions, especially given the price. No Guinness here bc they brew their own beer. We had reservations and were seated promptly but somehow people who were seated after us received table service before us. My husband went back to the hostess to ask who our server was so that we could start our dinner order. Needless to say our server was not so happy about that. We both started with the seafood chowder. It was ok tasting but 15€ for a cup!? We had had better seafood chowder at other restaurants for 10€ a bowl. My entree was the braised beef boxty. The meat and gravy was salty. The potato pancake was good. I did not finish it. Husband had the Shepard's pie. He said the pie was good. The tables were so packed into the restaurant we had stuff moving on our table each time someone passed. Very underwhelmed with the experience. Not so secret gem of a restaurant. We ate here four times during our stay in Dublin. First thing I got was a full Irish breakfast which comes with three different types of sausage including black pudding (blood sausage). The thing this place is known for as you could probably tell from the name of the restaurant is the boxty pancake. The boxty pancake is basically a pancake made out of potato. This is naturally gluten free and was popular back in the mid 18th century. It has made a resurgence as of late with the popularization of Irish culture. Another dish we ordered was the boxty sampler. Typically, you can only order this after 2pm I want to say however they were nice enough to make it for us I believe twice by request. It has boxty fries, boxty dumplings swimming in garlic and a sweet tangy sauce, two different boxty breads that have some really special fixings on them. We also got a side order of colcannon, which is kale, mashed potatoes, and a generous portion of butter mixed into the dish. Dessert here is nothing to sneeze at either, they have a delectable Bailey's Irish Cheesecake with blueberries on top. It tasted like they were generous with the Bailey's in it as well as I could definitely taste the alcohol, so maybe don't get it if you are on the wagon. I also have to mention one of the servers here is named Michael. He is great and gave us the recommendation to try Bar 1661 which was voted one of the top 10 best bars in the world. He gave me an introduction to what Poitin is and how it only became legal recently in Ireland, and also had a wealth of knowledge of all the Irish foods that people around the world should try when they visit. Super cute cozy setting in the Temple area. The Beer flight was a good way to try their beer made on site. For me, the lager & ipa were really good. Buffalo cauliflower to start really hit the spot- huge portion, great dipping sauce. The Gaelic sirloin boxty was the classic thing to try. The beef was shockingly tender, not tough. I was here in October of 2023 and stopped in again last week with my daughter.. My friends, who had been on the trip with me in 2023, told my daughter that this was the best place they had eaten in all of Ireland. I agreed and made reservations. My daughter loved it! We had a wonderful evening with great service, thank you Oogee. For drinks my daughter ordered Debbie Doesn't Like It, and I ordered a Summer Breeze. This place is unassuming and casual, but the quality of our meal was amazing for the price. Try the fixed price menu deal where you get a starter, main dish and dessert for 45 EUR. The wine selection by the glass is small, but fine. They serve cocktails and beer also. The food was fabulous! Unbelievably delicious beef medallion boxty in mushroom and pepper whiskey sauce with vine ripe broiled tomatoes. Our salad was wonderful with a maple syrup and mustard dressing, green pears and Cashel blue cheese with roasted walnuts and frisée. Really wonderful. The bread and butter pudding was good...a little on the plain side, but the rich ice cream and raisins made it solid. I may dream about the whiskey sauce tonight. It rocked! A rainy casual last day in Dublin with several pub stops. Stopped in and had dessert and a beverage. I had the cheesecake with a cup of tea and my husband had the bread plate with a coffee. I enjoyed the bailey's cheesecake. It tasted more like a mousse, very light and tasty w/a toes with chocolate sauce and berries. The bread plate had soda bread, beer bread and we don't recall the third. He wasn't a fan of the soda bread but said the beer bread was very good. Our waitress was very friendly and offered suggestions for ordering the bread plate. We sat by the sidewalk window and met the server, David, who provided his input on a few of the menu items. I chose the Beef & Stout Stew which was a hearty meal with a side of three types of bread. Great meal at The Boxty House, despite the level of tourist location. We did learn that reservations are recommended. We popped in and they were full. We were able to put our name in and return. The restaurant is pleasant, simply decorated, and a friendly vibe. Or server was great, friendly with just the right level of teasing attitude. Their cocktails as introduced us to Dingle Distillery gin (which led us to a tour later in our trip). I think this might be a tourist trap. I had this spot bookmarked because it had good reviews and the food looked good, which it was. However, it was kind of pricey for what it was, and it's probably because it's located right in Temple Bar. We stopped by for lunch on a Friday at around 2. Between me and my husband, we ordered 'An Gach Rud', which was a sampler platter, to share, since we wanted to try a little bit of everything. It came with the Gaelic Boxty (medallion of Irish beef), Gallagher's Lamb Stew, Corned Beef Boxty Dumplings, Carrot Puree & Black Pudding Crumb on Boxty Loaf, and Boxty fries. For those of you unfamiliar with boxty, it's a traditional Irish potato pancake made from a mixture of raw, grated potatoes and cooked, mashed potatoes. I read that it's supposed to be crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. This one was just soft and soggy all over, so I wasn't a huge fan. I actually preferred the lamb stew and the corned beef. The lamb in the stew was very tender, and didn't have any gamey lamb taste. The fries had a nice flavor but it was too oily and over-fried. I would say that we weren't really that full, but we weren't still hungry either. We could have eaten more, or just not ate, if that makes sense. Besides, I don't think either of us wanted any more of any of the dishes since they're pretty heavy. I don't think I would be able to finish any one of these dishes by myself, so if you can, come with a group of people so that you can try a little bit of everything. Came at a time where it wasn't too busy. Got seated quickly and the service was great. The server was kind and attentive. We ordered 3 items to share. Seared Scallop- this was really good. I've also never had scallops where, I assume, the roe was served with it. The scallop was sweet and the roe gave it a more savory flavor. The carrot putter and the blood pudding crumbles complimented it well providing another sweet and savory element. Beef and Stout Stew- the stew was comforting and hearty. It was pretty empty when we sat down, but it filled up by the time we were done. We have a celiac child and it was fantastic because their kids menu was celiac safe, including chicken nuggets! Also, our girls ordered lemonades and they brought them in fancy cocktail glasses, which of course the kids loved We did an Irish cheese and bread plate to begin with. I think there could've been a little bit more cheese. In my opinion and the Bread was just OK. They do make it in house, which is nice, but some of the textures were a little dry for my liking. I got the blue cheese dumplings and holy cannoli. If I could eat that sauce every day for the rest of my life, I would do so happily. Texture on the dumplings was great. Reminiscent of gnocchi, but not the same. And the sauce was decadent and silky, but not overwhelming My girlfriend got the Gaelic boxy. It was also phenomenal. Stopped into the Boxty House after seeing it on an episode of Somebody Feed Phil. I was really intrigued by the idea of a boxty and knew I needed to try it during my visit. It was easy to grab a reservation online but ultimately, I ended up sitting at the bar which was a great choice since all the staff members were incredibly friendly and welcoming. I ordered the Gaelic Boxty per my server's recommendation. This particular platter came with beef medallions, boxty pancakes, a cream sauce, tomato, and fried onions. It was really rich and savory. I think it actually could've used a bit of salt but ultimately, I enjoyed it. The cocktail list was surprisingly huge but I opted for a glass of red wine which paired well with the beef. I even got the sticky toffee pudding for dessert which was lovely. My only regret is not trying the boxty fries because they smelled and looked amazing! It's in a very touristy part of Dublin, but well worth it. It's like a crepe and pancake filled with corned beef goodness. The Boxty House was a Yelp recommendation for us so before we left the states I made a reservation for the day we were in Dublin, Ireland seeing the Book of Kells. After being seated we ordered the Irish stew and soda bread and the corned beef and cabbage to share. The service was prompt and helpful however it could have been a bit more friendly. Both meals were very good, although the honey really enjoyed the stew and I much preferred the corned beef. Boxtys are a must when visiting Ireland and Gallagher's Boxty House has mastered this potato pancake by turning them into dumplings, fries, pancakes and even making tacos with them. We went with a Chicken Boxty that had a fabulous sauce, think of chicken gravy with green onions and leeks over a Boxty that's filled with grilled chicken tenderloins. There was about a 15 minute wait, which wasn't bad. We were set at a high top table with stools. The waiter approached the table promptly and took our drink orders. I ordered a vodka drink. For food I decided on the fish and chips. Compared to the others I've tried while in Ireland, the portion size was very small. Although small it was pretty good. I came here for my last dinner while visiting Ireland and was not disappointed! I am a pescatarian with a gluten allergy which I mentioned to the host and she assured me I'd be safe here. My friend and I started with the Seasoned Fries which were probably some of the best fries I've ever had. For my main I ended up ordering the Salmon Boxty and although I didn't really understand what I ordered because I did not understood what Boxty is, I really liked it!
