I've come back 4 years later upon reflection and wanted everyone to be aware that back then, as a young woman, I still struggled with needing to be "nice" and felt really bad about leaving a less than 3 star review. I also struggled with the conditioning that everything was my fault when in fact, this was one of the most traumatic things that happened to me and it was completely out of line. After waiting ALL DAY for the mover and then to have him lose his shit on you on the phone when you're asking him to give you a specific time for when he comes, as in, he's hysterical and crying and screaming at you and wanting you to give him emotional support and hear about his stressful day is beyond ridiculous. Then, the get lied to about getting a discount and have to follow up and have the same person who offered you a discount say no they can't, is absurd. Not to mention, the mover who did come kept telling me "I gave you this for free and that for free so you need to tip me" something was very very off. And I was moving 3 blocks, I had very little furniture, I didn't even have a bed or couch, the whole move took 1 hour but they needed me to pay for 3 on top of a big tip as the mover kept angling for, is deceitful. Don't use these guys for a cross country move. After showing up 3 days late... They told me that they would let me know in advance if the hill I lived on was too steep for the moving truck in which case a smaller truck would be necessary along with a $150 charge. They didn't mention anything to me so the driver shows up with an 18 wheeler and refuses to drive up the hill. He says that he is one ticket away from having his license suspended and doesn't want to take the risk (what does that say about the driver? And the company who hired him?). Finally the 18 wheeler makes it up one of the steepest hills in Sf and is illegally parked in the middle of the intersection while the one moving helper hurriedly unloads my boxes in the middle of the street. Great. Further more, they shattered the glass desktop which they charged me extra to hand pack. Awesome. On the plus side they're relatively cheep in price (500 ft ^3 for 2300) but who cares when they are incapable? The one star is for the fact that they are cheap and that's about it. read more

DO NOT USE! LIED AND MISREPRESENTED! After receiving an email estimate from Eugene G. for three hours of work, Eugene refused to respond to our query of when we could book the start time for our move. Zvi M. spoke with us over the phone and increased the price by about $200, accusing us of not understanding the estimate. Zvi claimed we did not provide a list of items to be moved (even though we did) and claimed the estimate we were initially given was a "minimum" - despite that we have written confirmation it was an "estimate." He also said New York Law mandates that moving companies have to additionally charge for one hour travel time (half an hour to your first apartment and half an hour back from the new apartment). Yet when pressed for the Rule, he refused to provide it. Zvi was rude, condescending and self-important. DO NOT USE his other moving company, Manor Moving and Storage, either, unless you like being insulted and conned. read more

I can't fathom the poor reviews below. I had nothing but a positive experience with Better Move. I moved from the UES to Washington Heights in mid-March and used Better Move after seeing a Living Social deal for a free hour of moving. The movers were running late and called me to let me know, which most places won't do. They emptied my apartment in what felt like 5 minutes, working as quickly and efficiently as possible. All of my furniture was in pristine condition after the move and they didn't even complain (at least out loud) about my moving into a fifth floor walk-up. The movers were courteous and respectful and deserved every penny of the tip we gave them. All moving companies have a minimum requirement for hours to work, so the reviewer below would have the same complaint everywhere. I moved from a tiny apartment and didn't have much with me, but it still took 3-4 hours for the full move and I would pay them full price to move my things again. I moved on a hot and sticky day of july in Manhattan. These guys showed heart and determination as I have rarely seen. We are french people that happens to move a lot from countries to countries and our belongings are very important to us as they are the only things that remains with us through our moves. So I am always worried to put all of it in someone else's hands. Our furnitures are big, heavy and expensive ( king size bed, solid wood large dining table, huge bookshelves,...) and we have a tons of clothes and kitchen stuff. They walked up 2 flights of narrow stairs on a 100 degrees day and still manage to be friendly and nice. One of our bookshelf is incredibly heavy and was very tight in the stairs. It took them a lot of sweat and time to navigate it through but they didn't give up and made it. Nothing got broken and you could tell that they cared. I am so grateful to the team and to Eugene that helps us with the certificate of insurance and everything. read more

Movers can be a nightmare, and it's hard to get a good mover recommendation. So, take it from me: Go with Better Move. Professional, reliable, and half the price of other quotes we got. The sales office is experienced and have a great can-do attitude. The crew we got on our two moves (Patrick, Richie, and the guys) showed up early, were flexible, worked quickly, and were great to work with. However Patrick and his team were nothing but professional and even comforting during this very hectic day. I'm just going to state the facts and avoid color commentary. They marked up my walls and put a bad scratch in my floor that is about 12" long. They were more concerned with time than being careful. Oh, and they won't do anything about it.. And this was a referral from a broker who's company uses them often! Sooooo, I guess the lucky people above me didn't have their apartment damaged by them. My best move experience yet in NY. AL's crew was punctual, thoughtful, so pleasant to be around and really good at moving! They emptied my apartment so quick and moved right onto the next apartment. My move was for 3 stops (my place, my new roommates place and the our new place together) and they seemed like it was nothing. When they actually came the move was fast, however I would not use them again. They were not communicative and had very poor scheduling. I was moving from Spanish Harlem to Crown Heights. 6th floor walkup to a 4th floor walkup. I got a quote for a flat rate consistent with other movers. I used them because a friend had a good experience. The confirmation email said I would be called two days prior to my move (which was a Monday) to confirm everything. They never called on Saturday. I called them myself on Sunday, they confirmed it was still happening and said I would receive a call mid-day to know when to expect the movers, but they would most likely be there 3-4pm. Here's the timeline for Monday: 2pm: Midday had come and gone with no call, so I called the Dispatch office and was told the rain was slowing everything down but they should be there around 4pm 4pm: Received a call saying the rain was really slowing everything down and to expect them around 5pm. Tried to be understanding but was starting to get annoyed. I hired movers to relieve stress, not add to it. 5:30pm: No movers yet AND no call, so I called them. The man I'd been speaking with was not in the office, the woman who answered said he'd left and was on his way to my place (he did not update me himself about this) to start the move as no trucks were yet available- but she would contact him and have him call me. He called me back a short time later to confirm he was on his way as the delay was unacceptable. 6pm: The coordinator and another man show up and start moving my stuff down the stairs. A short time later a few more guys and the truck show up- the driver mentions an hourly rate. I'd had three extra hours to prep so everything was ready to go down the stairs- all they had to do was wrap my furniture in blankets and carry it down. All I had to move was the contents of my bedroom and a few misc items, so by 8:30 or 9 everything was in my new place. As it was so fast I asked that I could have the hourly rate instead. It would've been half the cost of my quote, and a nice gesture after all the scheduling snafus. The driver said he would speak to the office, but ultimately said they couldn't. I asked why and he gave some bull answer about then having to factor in materials...what, the tape they used to keep the blankets on my furniture? I guess they already had my card info and the fact that I'd agreed to the price quoted. Needless to say I will not be using them again. Even if the scheduling had gone well, a moving company needs better communication. read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! I never post reviews but this situation was too awful not to share. I want to save someone else the trouble that I had to deal with. I paid to keep several of my items in storage with them for years and when I finally got them out I found them to be terribly damaged! When I tried to speak to someone about the damage they gave me the run around and would not let me speak to someone in customer service. When someone from customer service finally called me they were extremely rude. Please save yourself the trouble and do NOT use this company. read more

I just used Better Move last week for a third time. As for this recent move, I was moving from Manhattan to Brooklyn. I was moving from a studio to a one bedroom. I wasn't able to finalize my new location until two weeks before the move. Despite the move occurring in the midst of the busy season, Zvi was accommodating as possible up until the last minute. He was able to squeeze me into a highly busy morning slot. His crew was on time, extremely professional and efficient. I did most of the packing but there was some packing that Better Move had to do. None of my items were broken or damaged and there was no damage to my old or new building. There's a complaint below about the final cost being higher than the initial estimate. My actual cost was higher than the estimate too, but that was because additional packing and time was required that wasn't accounted for in the estimate. Estimating a move is not an exact science and I suspect it would've occurred with any moving company. All said, the job took 7 hours (including travel time) instead of 6. In the past, when I've had an issue, Better Move was responsive and very fair in resolving it. I would definitely use them again. read more

Firstly I must say, I hate moving and have rarely had a good experience with movers (for the most part they remind me of car sales people trying to nickel and dime you on everything). At least that had been my experience prior to Better Move. Secondly I have rarely written a review as the service must be either exceptional or terrible for me to do it. Moved my things from a storage unit in Jersey City to NYC and used them based on a recommendation from my Realtor to Assa (the operations guy) who then passed me on to Eugene (the person who provided the quote). First off there were some issues with the number of hours/cost/discount based on the referral that Eugene provided, but that was clarified quickly by the owner (they gave me a smaller discount because my move was not very large). Although I was temped to cancel the service because of the change, I decided not to. They took care of all the paperwork and more importantly for me were reachable by email when I needed to. My move was on a Friday after the last snow storm, and they called me earlier in the week to make sure I wanted to move that day considering the weather (I really couldn't change the timing). On Friday they came in two hours late (but that worked out well because the storage location was snowed in and it took them that long to clear out). The supervisor explained the driver was new and had lost his way multiple times & he had already made (during the two hours I was able to reach their office and get them have the driver call me, so they were on the road and not just goofing off). As agreed, there was a three man crew - a supervisor and two day/part timers (I think). The truck was huge - i think I barely filled up half of the truck. The supervisor was exceptional - he knew how to keep everything safe, wrap the furniture correctly and make sure the other two guys were really doing their work (they were frankly a little lazy I think). He was also careful about everything and made sure if I had any questions, I got answers. The move into my apartments was basically done by the supervisor and one of the guys (while the driver sat in the truck for the most part). The total move took 6 hrs + 1 hr travel time and probably one of my least painful move and I am glad I used them. The only reason for the 4 stars - the discount change in the beginning (which at the end wasn't huge) and the two hour wait for them to come. That was offset up the professional supervisor and the exact number of hours to make the move. read more

Just did a huge move from a 3 bedroom apartment in NYC to a house in SI with Al and his crew. They had a great attitude throughout the move. They were efficient and packed my vintage and antique items with great care. This was my first big move and I did not know what to expect. I just experienced my third move (this year!) with Better Move. I found them very efficient to book and responsive to last-minute alterations in my plans. I had to make changes to the delivery location and then ended up needing to have my things put in storage for a few months. They were very accommodating on all counts.
