It probably sounds weird to say that I love this place, but I do. We no longer have to do the onerous task of shredding our own documents. You know those pesky credit card offers you get in the mail, the bills that have your name and account info on them, and etc.! Every couple of months or so, we'll drop off our shred pile, see them get shredded right before our eyes, and less than a couple of minutes later, we're outta there! So fast and convenient! A "box" of stuff costs $7. The staff member responsible for putting your stuff in their industrial shredder will let you know the equivalence of your stuff in boxes. We usually have at least a box or so. My pile today was equal to a box and a half, so I paid $10.50. We found out about this place through the sign on their building. I'd always see it when we're driving on I-80 (between the University Ave and Gilman exit). They can also destroy disc drives for you if needed. If you're like us, and need someone to shred your important documents securely, then this place is perfect for you! read more

I have spent the last month packing up my office and turning it into a nursery, which left me with a box of papers that I didn't want going in the recycling bin. After declining my mother-in-law's offer to shred it for me at home (15 years of love letters, no thank you!) I started to look for a shredding service. I found services that would come to your home, pick up your gazillion boxes, and charge you $75 per visit plus a fee per box. What I needed was The Shredder Store, alternately known as Automatic Response Systems in Berkeley. They are visible from the freeway, on Eastshore. Drive around to their side entrance, and they will unload your box(es) for you. They let you watch as they run all your stuff through a machine that looks like a cross between a TSA baggage screening machine and a wood chipper, and charge you $10 per box. Easy peasy. They sell shredders and give you bins to keep in your home and stuff, but all I needed was one box shredded, and they were perfect for that! read more

This place is miles better than Shred Works - just drive in park next to the shredder - nice gentleman working the shredder - acknowledges every person in there regardless of how busy he is - great guy I hope he makes a lot of money for the work he does - if not then this is a note to the owner - he is a great front door to your company! The people who pick up the bins (and who sometimes answer the phones) are professional, friendly, and prompt. I really couldn't ask for anything more. another very RARE 5star experience.... only cause I've had sooo many old bill and other useless papers that were building up and was becoming a fire hazard. I have a shredder, but it's sooo time consuming and LOUD. I figured that there had to be a better way. I lucked out and found this place...loaded up my BIG garbage bag (yea I had that much) and drove right up, they unloaded the bag AND I sat there and watched the paper shred within a matter of seconds....all for $10!! I drove my car in, and the gentleman took the three boxes out of my trunk and spilled the papers onto the shredder belt. The whole thing was fast and efficient and reasonably priced. I didn't even get a chance to use this service due to its unsatisfactory/non-existent responses to both emails and voicemail messages. I did speak with someone twice, the first time a young lady told me the company could deliver a bin to my home but when I called to schedule the delivery she told me they aren't delivering them. Asked when they would resume delivering and she said check back. I asked when I should check back and she didn't know. I then asked if she had any idea when they would resume delivery but she didn't know that either. Very frustrating but I'm sure I can find another shredding service. DUDE seriously. This place is rad. Loved the entire experience. Pull up (nice guy helps). Walk in (nice guy puts the boxes on the conveyer and the stuff shreds in a dramatic and fantastic way). Follow obvious path to cashier (pass a beverage fridge with yummy stuff, grab one). Pay totally reasonable price (super nice guy engages with me about the typewriter collection). Only bummer was a gal (one of the owners, managers?) who got fired up when I asked a question about partnerships with businesses that offer digitizing services - as in 'hey, they'll digitize that vhs tape and then you'll destroy it'. In my mind, cool idea! She got very defensive and it got awkward. My husband later was like, Uh hey, it makes sense, they don't want you to think they have a way to digitize all the stuff you are trying to destroy. Oh. Right. So! Five stars it is. read more

Two years ago I took a laptop to Berkeley Shreds and asked them to remove and destroy the hard drive. I watched the tech open the laptop, remove the hard drive, and take it to a large "shredder" a few fee behind where I stood. He dropped it in, turned it on, and the very loud racket of the grinding destruction lasted, it seemed 15 seconds or so. The other day I took a PC hard drive there for destruction. Because of Covid restrictions, I could not enter beyond the main door. The tech said, "Ten dollars." I gave it to him, and he said "I'll do this right now for you." After creating my receipt, he took the drive to the machine back where I remember seeing it before, near the office. He turned on a switch, I heard a humming, he dropped the drive in the hopper, and all I heard was the same humming, not the loud grinding I'd heard before, which I'm sure would have been very easy to hear even from where I was standing. After a few seconds he turned off the switch, and came back to give me my receipt. I said that it didn't sound as though anything had been ground up. I said I had been there before and this was not what I'd experienced before. He said, maybe it didn't go through. I'll go check for you. He went and got a step-ladder and looked down into the hopper, and gave me a thumbs up. I was uneasy when I left. I phoned a half hour later and spoke with a woman about my concern at not having heard the machine grind anything up. What could she say, but the tech has been destroying hard drives all day; of course it was destroyed. I have been increasingly uneasy since then. read more

I tried to drop off a computer here, thinking it was eWaste Collective next door. You can actually recycle computers here, but there's a small fee, depending on the kind of machine, because they don't donate them anywhere; they only recycle. When we realized that I had mixed up Berkeley Shreds with eWaste Collective, the Berkeley Shreds guy directed me to them, and even let me borrow one of his carts to take my stuff over there. Very nice! I haven't used their shredding system, but I appreciated the help, and at least I know a place to go if I ever do need a computer hard drive destroyed. read more
