This place has a little bit of everything. A one stop shop. It is an extensive hardware store with a coffee shop, chocolate bar, kids stuff, greeting card section, kitchenware, unique spices and sauces, and much much more! Kid friendly and they have a shopping cart toddler-sized. They have a bird named Chainsaw and he will even say hello. Everyone in the store is friendly and happy. A warm and welcoming environment. It is a litle pricey for some of the stuff, so it is good to browse and purchase some things elsewhere. There are some unique things in there, which are worth it. Love the selection of baby gifts. I used to go to Tanglewood Pharmacy and Gifts for baby shower gifts but they no longer have a regular store. Bering's is my new go to place! The baby selection is good with items of varying cost. There are toys, clothes, and other beautiful keepsake gifts. The gift wrapping is a big reason why I'll use them every time! The gift wrap is beautiful and they do it fast! I've also been here several times for other reasons such as getting keys made or picking up a quick lawn item. It's not the cheapest place, but for baby gifts, it'll be where I shop every time. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with this store. The customer service is absolutely horrific but the gifting items are great. However today I came in to exchange a baby gift I received with a gift receipt, all tags attached and within a week of the gift of being purchased. When I came in, the guy at checkout told me I cannot exchange and I cannot get store credit, but he can refund the person who purchased the gift. He essentially told me everything was final sale only for me but not for the person who made the initial purchased. I'm pretty sure that defeats the purpose of a gift with a gift receipt? So if you purchase something here just know it's a final sale and their internal system is completely worthless. I ended up leaving the gift on the counter with zero resolution as I was short on time and extremely frustrated. So... Bering's, the gift is on me... enjoy your free baby onesie, booties, and hat that you can now sell again and essentially double profit from. I will not be back and will advise my friends to shop elsewhere. read more

As a place to register for a wedding or buy wedding gifts, my experience (which I wrote about on 3/29/11 below) tells me to stay away. But in the four years since I've gotten married, I've had a child and found that Bering's is actually a great place to buy really nice baby clothes for special occasions. Unlike other high-end baby stores (such as Doodles in Rice Village), you can actually exchange or return the clothes and other kids gifts you buy at Bering's, which is really important, especially if you buy them before a baby is born and aren't sure exactly how big he or she will be when the baby has to wear it. They also have a lot of nice, if somewhat pricey, gifts for kids and young children. 3/29/2011: After registering here for my wedding, it's hard for me to understand why people consider Bering's the gold standard for customer service. I could write two pages worth of problems, including: 1. the women in the stationery department ignoring my mother and I while they gossiped about who knows what 2. the staff at the Bissonnet store telling my mom's good friend that we weren't registered there when in fact we were 3. the gifts that arrived without cards indicating who they were from -- and the staff who, when I called, couldn't tell me who sent the gift because the computers at the two stores and the website aren't integrated 4. the way they poorly wrapped our dishes 5. the three months it took to actually get our dishes because they didn't carry them in the store and, my personal favorite, 6. after we'd gotten all of our dishes -- after months and months of wrangling -- and paid for them, we discovered that we never received five of our bowls, even though we'd paid for them. Most of this is due to shoddy 1950s record-keeping. I could go on, but I'll leave it at that. We registered here and stayed registered here because the only other place that sells the dishes we wanted is a website, and we wanted to make sure guests had an option that also had a store. But if I could do it all over, I would've just registered on that other website. So, if you're considering registering here for your wedding -- don't. Planning a wedding is stressful enough. The places you register should make your life easier (especially when they're getting thousands of dollars of purchases off your registry), not create problems for you and your guests. read more

Berings is a very interesting "hardware" store, but don't go to Berings if you need hardware. It is a hardware store for people who do not really do hardware type work. Berings has a great selection of crystal, china, stationary, and kitchen gadgets. And you can bet it will be the best of the best; Waterford, Simon Pearce, Wedgewood, LeCreuset, and more. They have a great customer service and will find you the product you need. Sometimes I feel that I have to dress up to go into the store. The employees will tend to look down on you if you are not their typical River Oaks/Memorial buyer. So if you look fabulous, check out Berings for probably the best time you can have in a hardware store. read more

It is a fun place to walk around and browse since there are a variety of unique items...I recently was on the search for a guestbook and when to 3 other stores before thinking about going here...They had the perfect guestbook for my occasion which was much classier than options at other places...If you are looking for a gift for that person who has everything this may be a good place to find a speciality gift for them or anyone. read more

Have you ever needed to go to Bed Bath and Beyond, Ace Hardwear Store, Kids R Us, Godiva and Papyrus/Paper Source at the same time? Well if you do this is the place to go! Its also a great place to go with a man. He can be entertained in the hardware area and you can go to the stationary, china, kitchen wear and adorable children's clothes area. They have everything Bed Bath and Beyond has which includes all sorts of small kitchen appliances and gadgets, luggage, designer brands of course including Vera Bradley. Then there is the chocolate and coffee area. They also have fancy sauces and salsas. Then there is a whole area for china and crystal. Then there is the children's area. Great place to get baptismal gowns and fancy presents for babies. There are also adorable tutus for little girls and suits for little boys. Then there is the HUGE stationary section with print yourself invites and custom order stationary. Lots of wrapping paper and decorative bows. The hardware section has tools, fireplaces, door knobs, screws, nails, cute yard stuff, grills including big green eggs. There is also dog beds and toys. You can also find the store's parrot in this area. Whistle at him, he may whistle back. The workers are always helpful and friendly. Parking is great! Lots of spots in their huge lot. Out front they also have lots of rocking chairs for purchase or just trying out. They do have a wedding registry and if most of my guests were from Houston I would have registered here instead of BBB. But the Berrings web site is a little archaic so I went with BBB. I love getting lost in this store. I can't wait to have money to buy wedding presents from here. They do have reasonably priced presents but I want to get the sparkly things. read more

I love wastelands (and I mean that in the best possible way). Bering's is one such store. They have everything from aprons and potholders to knives, plates, blenders and kitchen aid mixers. The staff at this place are super friendly and will always have an answer to any question. They have a coffee selection thats pretty extensive, different kinds of food and candies/chocolates. So this is an odd store to explain. It's sort of like a Target/Walmart in compact version ... although there aren't any clothes or personal items. There are, however, a ton of household items such as kitchen utensils, garden supplies, stationary, dishware, coffee/candy, etc. I liked my Saturday morning there, but I felt as if I would more often than not choose to go to a Target/Walmart instead. For the higher end gifts I would choose a cute store like Kuhl LInscomb. I really did enjoy the store, but I felt it wasn't the first place I would stop for my gifts or households needs. It was quite busy and is clearly a loved store so I might need to give it another try. read more

I've loved coming to Bering's for years. They have a fantastic selection of goods from cookware to hammers. There's never a shortage of helpful employees to guide you directly to what you need. Today reminded me of just how great this place really is. I came in to have six key blanks cut for my new Keyport and the employee assisting me couldn't be more helpful! He kept trying even though one of them was giving him a hard time. At the end of it, he even let me take them free of charge since I hadn't purchased the blanks from them. Helpful and courteous isn't a trait commonly found in shops around Houston but it is definitely here! read more

I don't know if its really a hardware store. It's a 'lifestyle' store as one of the people there said. In my opinion its expensive - but they certainly have a lot of different and unique "stuff". I placed an order for a shower present two weeks ago. It was processed right away. Today (nearly two weeks later) the order was finally shipped. Needless to say it will not arrive in time for the shower. The order was well over $100, yet they still charged $8 for shipping. Really? I am so so so full of regret for choosing to order from Berings. Never again will purchase anything from them. Never. Of course I already purchased another present for the shower. Oh gosh this store is nicely organized, fully staffed and pretty to browse. However, it's so incredibly expensive that I typically can't think of anything I would want to purchase there. They do offer some unique items. Nonetheless, most items are overpriced. I love that it feels like (what I imagine) an old school general store would be like. The staff always helps when you need it, but they don't pester you if you are browsing. The latter just makes me crazy in some stores where staff is always in your face. Like Michelle Cunningham's review on Google, Bering's is "...more than just a hardware store [...] but also a nice collection of specialty gifts and high end housewares." I found it handy from the hardware store aspect, and I also liked their candy department. (My dentist is cringing!) But my wife made a good point: they have all sorts of other items which she is interested in. It reminds me of the Ben Franklin's and other 'Five and Dimes' of my youth. It was just a cool place where you could get almost anything you want with a personal touch. I won't argue that the prices may be high. But for a quick fix -- especially in hardware -- they more than meet the need. All of you Do-It-Yourself'ers would be better of at Lowe's or Home Depot. But this store doesn't really cater to the handy man: it is more of a general store, which I like. read more

Bering's is a cute, clean little store with a small town feel, but incredibly pricey overall. Bering's sells nice small housewares and a limited selection of hardware items (as compared with Home Depot/Lowes, for example), as well as high-end wedding gifts and baby/children's clothes, although I'm not sure how the average person affords to purchase anything for those who have chosen to register here. I mostly frequent the store for their small but tasty selection of coffees, chocolates, tamales and other 'gourmet' food items. They even sell Cherchie's soups, condiments and dip mixes, so you don't have to wait all year for them to show up at The Nutcracker Market or pay for shipping from the Cherchie's website. Bering's has a very extensive invitation and stationery selection, probably among the best in Houston, including classic favorites like Crane & Co. Although I have purchased and continue to purchase note cards and stationery from Berings, I cannot recommend their wedding invitations. I intended to purchase my wedding invites here, but my mother and I were made to feel very insignificant by the head stationery salesperson. We were handed a big stack of books and left alone to look through them. Once we made our selection, which was a classic design and definitely inexpensive by Berings standards, we were rushed through the ordering process in about 15 minutes. The ordering process is very archaic and very paper-intensive. We had to hand write our order selection, including paper and envelope choice as well as details of the wedding - names, date, location, time, etc. - which the salesperson would later transpose into an online ordering system that she would send off to the paper co. The risk of user error (misspelling of name or wrong date or time) gave me anxiety. And, although we had selected very minimal extras and no froufrou, were shocked to learn upon checkout that 85 invitations was going to cost us around $1,200. Yikes. Our request to place our order on hold for a day seemed to annoy our salesperson. We went home and did some research and were actually able to purchase the exact same invitations directly from the paper company for under $400 and they were delivered to us quicker than if we had purchased through Bering's. So, in all I would say Bering's is a nice place to shop around if you're looking for a unique item and/or don't have time to head to a big box hardware store, but if I would probably not advise creating a wedding registry here unless your guests have deep pockets. read more

Today's visit to Bering's reminds me why I quit shopping there years ago. I received a gift that was a duplication and tried to exchange it. A sales lady named Robin in the Westheimer store's housewares/china spoke to me with such snobbery and disdain. I politely asked her to call a manager to discuss their no return on Christmas items (the platter has a Christmas tree on it) after Dec. 24. She spoke to a manager named Steve and one named Alfred as I stood there listening to her act like I was an idiot for receiving a gift from their store! Words to the wise: If you need hardware, go to Ace. If you need a gift or china, go to Robert's. Ace and Robert's fall over themselves to help their customers. Bering's acts as if you are bothering them. The poor stationery department is like that too! read more

I am very disappointed with Bering's today, 12/27. I received 1 Santa Stocking Holder for Christmas, and having absolutely no need for it, I thought I would exchange it for something I do need. The Manager of the gift department would not exchange it because all Christmas items had to be returned or exchanged by 12/24. As I said, I received it as a Christmas gift so I didn't open it until 12/25. I feel this policy is very unfair! I will be sure not to purchase any Christmas items, as gifts, at Bering' s! I think people should have the right to return any gift they do not need or like. read more

I am a native Houstonian with five generations of Houstonian women in my lineage. I have never been more disappointed by a customer service experience than I have been with Bering's with my wedding registry. I no longer live in Houston but registered there because of its reputation among the women in my family. I had items that were not shipped, items "credited" to my account that Bering's never ordered but made available to be registered for, and I have been told that if I want said items, I must not only special order them and wait months for them to arrive but also then pay for shipping on items that were gifted to me, but that Bering's did not actually have for sale. I cannot and will not recommend using Bering's for a wedding registry or any other purpose. It's just awful what has become of my hometown and the businesses that used to be run well that are located there. read more

My wife and I visited Bering's today to pick up a $10 piece for a door handle on our guest room. Royce helped us out and not only found us the part but completely fixed the handle for us. Royce also pointed us to every other item we needed in the store. It was a very pleasant shopping experience. We will be back. read more

I have been patronizing Bering's since 1986 when I moved into town from the FM 1960 area. I have never written a review for Bering's before today. I just went to the Bissonnet store to get a specialty fastener to complete installation of a battery maintainer in a car. Royce there helped me not only find the right size (it had to fit a hole drilled by when the car was manufactured) but also offered and provided a "house" socket wrench with an extension to take to the car in the parking lot to see if the fastener would fit in the hole. You won't get this type of service at the big box stores, which are certainly cheaper in most cases for bulk or generic items. At them, in my situation today, you'd have to guess at the size of the fastener buy a box of 20 or 50 fasteners, and then go back and forth in and out if the store until you determined the correct size - and remember to bring your own tools. The other message here is that if you're a homeowner or a do-it-your-selfer and see the long-term value of having a store that has items and service that others don't, you need to PATRONIZE that store. A lot of great efficiencies have happened since the advent of mega-retailers and on-line shopping, but certain things (and stores) cannot be easily replaced - Bering's is one of them. read more

The one thing I experienced that I had never experienced before was the service I received. It was remarkable. The sales associate helped me find EVERY single thing I needed, was knowledgable about what I needed to do and guided me all along the way. I love going to browse around this store, I rarely actually purchase my items from them because of the ridiculasly high prices they have. Its easier to check out the item you want and to purchase online somewhere. I want to thank Royce for the fantastic customer service he gave yesterday at the West U store. I came in looking for a special size of metric machine screw for a kitchen cabinet project. The store was out of stock so Royce called the Westheimer store but they were also out. Royce then took 12 (the amount I needed) longer screws and cut they to size in the back! Wow! What great initiative and customer service. My wife got her kitchen cabinet handles installed when she wanted them and Berings gained a loyal customer. Other store sometimes have the same products and sometimes at lower prices, but the knowledge and excellent service from Berings' staff, like Royce, will keep me coming back! read more

Bering's is a nice hardware store EXCEPT if you want to have keys made. We needed new keys made for our Camry 2010 and 4runner. In both cases, the keys were not useable. I don't think they calibrate their key machine often enough or else the person making the keys was inexperienced or maybe something else. In any event, big waste of time. read more

The store has alot of great things - whomeever is the shopper and designer definitely does their part. What sets it above the top, however, is the service. I've done special orders at Berings, shopped for China, shopped for invitations, and just came in for regular visits. I don't know if it's a race issue or just poor customer service, but in my experience Bering's fails to provide customer service to blacks. My friend, a black professional who lives in West U told me what she had been experiencing at Bering's, failure to get help from white salesmen. So we did our own test. My black friend walked into Bering's and a group of 3 white salesmen standing around talking looked at her and turned away as she walked by. I walked in after watching what happened from outside, and one of the white salesmen walked up to me and asked if I needed help. I looked at him, grabbed my friend and walked out. My black friend ended up going to Westheimer Plumbing and Hardware, and she told me they were very pleasant and helpful. I won't be shopping at Bering's again. read more
