I'm so glad I stopped by Southland Hardware because you will not be finding me at a big box hardware store moving forward. They have just about anything for home improvement and projects. I was greeted at the front by a friendly lady who guided me to what I was looking for. She went above and beyond with explaining the different types of pesticides and her personal experiences and recommended methods of application (scatter the boric acid around instead of a straight line for roaches, which I didn't know!). It was a lot of fun browsing the store because there was so much to take in. The layout is like an antique store but for hardware, from plumbing to doorknobs to cleaning supplies, they had just about everything. I had an extremely great experience at Southland and will be back! And do not fret about parking, there is a large - by Montrose standards - parking lot in the back. read more

I grew up going to a local hardware store with my dad in Galveston where I grew up. In fact, that hardware is still around and it's called Chalmers. Ever watched The Jinx on HBO? It's where Robert Durst bought his tools to dismember that body. I digress. Anyway, local hardware stores are the heart of any city. On my way after a Yelp pick Up at Cosmic Juice across the street, I saw Southland Hardware and we decided to drop by. It was like going to the candy store for my husband. He was enthralled with all of the knick knacks that he was in one aisle for a long time while I chased around my three year old who was equally entertained by all of the parts such a store can have. They sold everything from small appliances to gardening items and anything you might need to help your home. I didn't know what anything was except for the snacks and they had a good and unique variety of those. Everyone was helpful and super chill. I appreciate the chill these days a lot more than I used to. What a great neighborhood find and yes things might seem a little bit more than say Amazon or another big box store but putting money into a community store helps save your community in the long run. You help the people who live there and put back into the place you live. read more

I ordered an item online, the price was good, the product was good but the setup and staff at Southland Hardware was lacking and I will never purchase there again. I was told to pick up my order in the back near lumber.....nobody was there. I managed to find my way to the front and was told to go somewhere else in the store for pickups. when I reached the area (with no other customers in sight) two employees were yakking and although they noticed me they did not stop talking. I finally said loudly I am here for an online pickup. I was told just a second and they continued talking for another 30 seconds, then laughed and one of them turned and said Name ? they went to the rear of the store somewhere and brought my order. I didn't bother asking how to exit back to my car in the back. read more

There aren't many of these old fashioned neighborhood hardware stores around anymore, especially in in urban areas so try to support them when I can and in return they have gotten me out of a bind many times. They have a lot of harder to find little parts that big box stores consider low volume and don't carry, but they are very competitive on the higher volume stuff too and are deceptively big and it'd save you a trip to the big orange store. read more

Thanks to your store carrying as much as you do, I was able to salvage a $100 belt with a $0.17 screw. When the western wear store told me they didn't carry replacement screws for the decorative silver pieces on their belts, I figured I would give y'all a shot since y'all have yet to let me down. You're still undefeated. I'm proud to support my local hardware store. As far as the customer service reviews that I've read, as long as you're not looking for a gluten-free cross-country underwater basket-weaving kit, they won't give you the side eye. Which if you were, I'd give you the side eye for them. I have always hated this place, despite really really wanting to like it. It's 5 mins from my house and I dislike it so much that I'm willing to drive 20 minutes to a big box hardware store. Today I visited Southland Hardware for the first time. I was needing some machine screws and had bought the wrong length at Home Depot. Instead of going out of the loop, I tried this place. Selecting screws was a very different experience here versus a big box store. Someone immediately came to help me and I learned a lot in just a few minutes. A few days earlier I spent 10 minutes in the screw aisle at Home Depot, and never got any help even though I needed it. This place gave me very nostalgic 80's vibes from visiting hardware stores with my dad when I was a kid! This place is very cool! I have been coming to this store for more than 20 years and always had had a great service and found all what I need. Unfortunately today one of the employees on service was totally very harsh and very unpleasant with bad manners. Did not want to help even when is his job. I can see that he is racist. His angry manners even ruined part of my tool that I brought to be service. For that reason a do not recomend the place until this Melvin is removed from his place or teach good manners as well as be capable to work with clients. Another employee is helping me to fix what Melvin ruined. Maybe for that reason I don't want to said the store is not good is only this employee which need training to learn his place and how to treat clients with respect. read more

This place is jam packed with stuff. At times it can be hard to find what you're after, but the staff are helpful and quick to your rescue when needed. Prices are usually inline or a little cheaper then the big hardware stores. Its just down the street from us too, which makes it an easy decision anytime I need to hit a hardware store. I understand with the recent cold snap we've had here in South Texas that plumbing department and certain hardware stores are very stressed and very pushed to the max. However when someone calls in to ask a question and they are treated by the plumbing department of this hardware store that rudely there is no excuse. When you call and complain to the manager and tell the young manager that there was trouble on the phone and that you were being screamed at by her plumbing representative and you were told well he is hard of hearing, excuse me that's not a reason to be rude to anyone. When I told the manager that I would be taking my business elsewhere I was told well do what you need to do I don't know how you stayed in business since 1935 treating people this way I wish you and your company the best of luck. read more

This is a wonderful hardware store with knowledgeable and helpful staff. I was having trouble opening my car key fob to replace the battery and went in to get a small Phillips head screwdriver. The gentleman at the checkout opened the fob cover and replaced the battery himself. I purchased the battery but he didn't make me buy the screwdriver, which I may not ever need again. Very kind to take the time to help me out! read more

The surliest, most miserable group of employees I've ever seen. They sit in their chairs, annoyed if you ask a question, and if you're lucky, they'll point in the general direction of the store. This is a quick place to get urgent needed supplies. However, customer service is lacking. I've gone here several time, because I needed something asap. Today I had to get a can of foam. To check out the clerk just looked at me. Never said anything. He checked me out with out a word. I said thank you, his response, you're welcome. I just paid for an over priced can of foam. It's hard to Find Businesses like this anymore. They are staffed with people who really know their stuff and have been at it for years. Not at all like Lowe's or Home Depot. I was so confused after going to both hardware stores, I brought everything I had in a huge box. They deciphered everything I had and ended up not selling me anything because they saw that I already had what I needed. They also pointed out all the unnecessary and wrong items that the hardware stores sold me. So I saved money and gained a lot of knowledge. Who does that anymore? If you need the right paint for the job, they either have it or can mix it. Enjoy free popcorn on Saturdays and stroll leisurely through the store and you will find a wide array of tools and gadgets designed to make your home projects flow with ease. The helpful staff are a far cry from the chain-store crap you get at the Home Despot or at Lowe's - these guys and gals know what they're doing and they don't shrug you off with that chain-store "I dunno" shrug. If they don't know, they get someone who DOES know. Also, they have the array of DiY doo-dads at the cashier register - like mini-screwdrivers and the like. These guys have everything - including customer service. Looking for a special wrench or hinge for a special project? They have it. Need your hatchets or chain saws sharpened? They can do that. Cabinet hardware. Duct stuff, saw blades, knives to cut any surface, cable, chain cutters, adhesives, reflective tapes and signs, cleaners, garbage cans, fans...if you need it, they likely have it. Seriously. How often do you just wander around a big box store looking for whatever it is you need - including customer service? And half the time when you can find someone who works at the big box store they aren't much help. This place is packed to the brim with do dads and handy things. And everyone who works there knows exactly where they keep it. It's not much more expensive than your discount stores. Knowing I'm getting what I actually need the 1st time is worth the extra couple bucks. read more

As much as I was excited about a local hardware store bringing in a hometown feeling right in the middle of Houston, I've come to consider this place a last resort. They have a good selection but you'd think they would be A LOT friendlier for the markup you pay when shopping there. They do no let greet you, they aren't helpful or ask if you need help, and almost seem annoyed by my presence. I've even had one last pull the "I told you so" with me, when I came back in the store asking if there was someone working in the lot. She hadn't even said anything to me previous to that, a different cashier had checked me out and sold me the dirt and didn't say anything about no one being in the lot. Why would you sell dirt if it wasn't available to pick up? And WHY would you tell a customer "well I told you so" or ANYTHING other than "Well get someone right out there for you" I see the owner or someone that works for Southlands Hardware replies to the reviews here but seriously, nothing has changed in the years I've shopped there. Either you are ineffective in your training or you don't actually address the issues. I will pay more to support a mom and pop business but not if the people that manage it (cashiers included) can't treat customers with respect. There's one man that works there, I think his name is Robert, who is really helpful, but he's the only one that ever helped me or even asked if I needed help. The cashier that gave me trouble with the dirt has always been rude. Shes never greeted me when I came to the register, she never asks if I found what I needed nor has she thanked me for me business. read more
