I'm so glad I stopped by Southland Hardware because you will not be finding me at a big box hardware store moving forward. They have just about anything for home improvement and projects. I was greeted at the front by a friendly lady who guided me to what I was looking for. She went above and beyond with explaining the different types of pesticides and her personal experiences and recommended methods of application (scatter the boric acid around instead of a straight line for roaches, which I didn't know!). It was a lot of fun browsing the store because there was so much to take in. The layout is like an antique store but for hardware, from plumbing to doorknobs to cleaning supplies, they had just about everything. I had an extremely great experience at Southland and will be back! And do not fret about parking, there is a large - by Montrose standards - parking lot in the back. read more

I grew up going to a local hardware store with my dad in Galveston where I grew up. In fact, that hardware is still around and it's called Chalmers. Ever watched The Jinx on HBO? It's where Robert Durst bought his tools to dismember that body. I digress. Anyway, local hardware stores are the heart of any city. On my way after a Yelp pick Up at Cosmic Juice across the street, I saw Southland Hardware and we decided to drop by. It was like going to the candy store for my husband. He was enthralled with all of the knick knacks that he was in one aisle for a long time while I chased around my three year old who was equally entertained by all of the parts such a store can have. They sold everything from small appliances to gardening items and anything you might need to help your home. I didn't know what anything was except for the snacks and they had a good and unique variety of those. Everyone was helpful and super chill. I appreciate the chill these days a lot more than I used to. What a great neighborhood find and yes things might seem a little bit more than say Amazon or another big box store but putting money into a community store helps save your community in the long run. You help the people who live there and put back into the place you live. read more

I've since changed my mind about this store, which I now consider to be a "neighborhood treasure". Where else can I can get answers about what I need?, certainly not the big boxes! They have since become much friendlier and easy to do business with. read more

The team has really cheered up and they are friendly and helpful. I love this classic hardware store vs the big box mega super corporate juggernaut massive home improvement store like Home Depot and Lowe's. The have 95%of everything you need and at good prices. Much better experience the the megas. Family owned and the way it should be. Go Southland read more

Customer service has gotten much better recently. Well done on what making those changes.

Southland hardware had great service! The staff was super friendly and went out of their way to help me.

I ordered an item online, the price was good, the product was good but the setup and staff at Southland Hardware was lacking and I will never purchase there again. I was told to pick up my order in the back near lumber.....nobody was there. I managed to find my way to the front and was told to go somewhere else in the store for pickups. when I reached the area (with no other customers in sight) two employees were yakking and although they noticed me they did not stop talking. I finally said loudly I am here for an online pickup. I was told just a second and they continued talking for another 30 seconds, then laughed and one of them turned and said Name ? they went to the rear of the store somewhere and brought my order. I didn't bother asking how to exit back to my car in the back. read more

Southland Hardware - Hardware Stores Near Me - Houston, Texas

There aren't many of these old fashioned neighborhood hardware stores around anymore, especially in in urban areas so try to support them when I can and in return they have gotten me out of a bind many times. They have a lot of harder to find little parts that big box stores consider low volume and don't carry, but they are very competitive on the higher volume stuff too and are deceptively big and it'd save you a trip to the big orange store. read more

This is an old-school hardware store with lots of parts for DIY and repair of small engines, electrical, plumbing, and so forth. If you cannot find it here, it's really a special order. Very low-key staff avoid embarrassing you if like me you often have no idea what you're talking about. read more

Friendly and helpful and you find everything you need at reasonable prices without the half hour drive to the big box store. We're regulars!

The staff was helpful and knowledgeable . Southland had just about every item you could possibly need and more . Old school hardware store which is nice in this modern world read more

Thanks to your store carrying as much as you do, I was able to salvage a $100 belt with a $0.17 screw. When the western wear store told me they didn't carry replacement screws for the decorative silver pieces on their belts, I figured I would give y'all a shot since y'all have yet to let me down. You're still undefeated. I'm proud to support my local hardware store. As far as the customer service reviews that I've read, as long as you're not looking for a gluten-free cross-country underwater basket-weaving kit, they won't give you the side eye. Which if you were, I'd give you the side eye for them. When I went in looking for the screw, the young man helping me looked enthusiastic to assist me, maybe even considering it a challenge to take care of my oddball request. read more

Just step into yesteryear in this great little place and you will find things that you never knew you needed. What a great hardware store!!!! read more

Our very own slice of Tomball inside of Montrose. The staff is rude, they overcharge for just about everything, and the place is disorganized and ugly. I have always hated this place, despite really really wanting to like it. It's 5 mins from my house and I dislike it so much that I'm willing to drive 20 minutes to a big box hardware store. Every time I go in, I regret it in some way. Do not shop here. read more

The folks at Southland are as friendly as they come. Just walk through the doors, and instantly you have two - maybe even three or four - gentleman ready to lend a helping hand. Need to find something simple for a leaky faucet? Super glue? Skizzors? They'll help you out. Southland Hardware is 100% the Ma & Pa shop you grew up going to with your pappy (...or Mom in my case. She was Mrs. Fix it.). read more

Today I visited Southland Hardware for the first time. I was needing some machine screws and had bought the wrong length at Home Depot. Instead of going out of the loop, I tried this place. Selecting screws was a very different experience here versus a big box store. Someone immediately came to help me and I learned a lot in just a few minutes. A few days earlier I spent 10 minutes in the screw aisle at Home Depot, and never got any help even though I needed it. This place gave me very nostalgic 80's vibes from visiting hardware stores with my dad when I was a kid! This place is very cool! I only needed to screws today but I will continue to shop this place instead of the big box stores! read more

I have been coming to this store for more than 20 years and always had had a great service and found all what I need. Unfortunately today one of the employees on service was totally very harsh and very unpleasant with bad manners. Did not want to help even when is his job. I can see that he is racist. His angry manners even ruined part of my tool that I brought to be service. For that reason a do not recomend the place until this Melvin is removed from his place or teach good manners as well as be capable to work with clients. Another employee is helping me to fix what Melvin ruined. Maybe for that reason I don't want to said the store is not good is only this employee which need training to learn his place and how to treat clients with respect. read more

Southland Hardware - This is the place of work of Melvin - Hardware Stores Near Me - Houston, Texas

The first time I came here I had a terrible/annoying experience. This was disappointing because a lot of my favorite brands for gardening are sold here at a great price. However, I just recently visited this morning and had such a pleasant experience. The man who helped me was so kind I wish I asked for his name. I will be back! read more

This place is jam packed with stuff. At times it can be hard to find what you're after, but the staff are helpful and quick to your rescue when needed. Prices are usually inline or a little cheaper then the big hardware stores. Its just down the street from us too, which makes it an easy decision anytime I need to hit a hardware store. Like supporting local businesses, and will continue to frequent Southland, the store with almost everything. read more

I'm working on a woodworking project. A clamp slipped while my glue was drying and caused an annoying gap. Melvin directed me to a different glue and syringes which worked amazingly saving the day. Thank you Melvin!! read more

I understand with the recent cold snap we've had here in South Texas that plumbing department and certain hardware stores are very stressed and very pushed to the max. However when someone calls in to ask a question and they are treated by the plumbing department of this hardware store that rudely there is no excuse. When you call and complain to the manager and tell the young manager that there was trouble on the phone and that you were being screamed at by her plumbing representative and you were told well he is hard of hearing, excuse me that's not a reason to be rude to anyone. When I told the manager that I would be taking my business elsewhere I was told well do what you need to do I don't know how you stayed in business since 1935 treating people this way I wish you and your company the best of luck. read more

They removed my other negative review, so I'm re-posting it. This is hands down, the absolute WORST customer service of any business, ever. The surliest, most miserable group of employees I've ever seen. They sit in their chairs, annoyed if you ask a question, and if you're lucky, they'll point in the general direction of the store. Back to Lowe's I go. Or Amazon. At least the UPS driver makes eye contact. read more

This is a wonderful hardware store with knowledgeable and helpful staff. I was having trouble opening my car key fob to replace the battery and went in to get a small Phillips head screwdriver. The gentleman at the checkout opened the fob cover and replaced the battery himself. I purchased the battery but he didn't make me buy the screwdriver, which I may not ever need again. Very kind to take the time to help me out! read more

Will never shop here again after 25 years of patronage. I carry a cross body handbag that they would not allow me to keep with me as I shop. THIS IS MY PURSE! You seriously need to reevaluate your "bag" policy. My "bag" is smaller than a full size purse!! Counter lady was rude about it too. Buh-bye! read more

This is a quick place to get urgent needed supplies. However, customer service is lacking. I've gone here several time, because I needed something asap. Today I had to get a can of foam. To check out the clerk just looked at me. Never said anything. He checked me out with out a word. I said thank you, his response, you're welcome. I just paid for an over priced can of foam. Do not buy keys here. I've had to return every key I've made a copy of. We can all do better. read more

This place is great. Do not let christi and Ana review distract you. Christi - welcome to Houston. We have crime here. Do not blame the business for protecting themselves. Instead, why not be understanding, Of why they have to take these precautions. Ana - if you shop there for 25 years, then he would have built a relationship with the people in there. You would also understand that with every company, and every cashier/helper/worker, there's going to be a few bad apples. Should've just taken your experience with a grain of salt, and told the manager about your experience. No need to blast over the Internet on something so small. Ugh. read more

It's hard to Find Businesses like this anymore. They are staffed with people who really know their stuff and have been at it for years. Not at all like Lowe's or Home Depot. I was so confused after going to both hardware stores, I brought everything I had in a huge box. They deciphered everything I had and ended up not selling me anything because they saw that I already had what I needed. They also pointed out all the unnecessary and wrong items that the hardware stores sold me. So I saved money and gained a lot of knowledge. Who does that anymore? They are a little out-of-the-way for me but I am going to do my very best to use them for every hardware need I have. read more

Enjoy free popcorn on Saturdays and stroll leisurely through the store and you will find a wide array of tools and gadgets designed to make your home projects flow with ease. The helpful staff are a far cry from the chain-store crap you get at the Home Despot or at Lowe's - these guys and gals know what they're doing and they don't shrug you off with that chain-store "I dunno" shrug. If they don't know, they get someone who DOES know. Also, they have the array of DiY doo-dads at the cashier register - like mini-screwdrivers and the like. Not to mention cool pocket manuals for measurement conversions, hardware needs, etc. If you can't find it here, I hate to say it, but you are royally screwed. read more

The store has a LOT of fixtures, hardware, and every repair tool for every room and situation and a lumber shop to cut wood in special sizes. The line tends to run short and fast. read more

We're done Southland Hardware. After 2 and a half decades of "well, I hate to go to Southland because they're so rude, but it's just around the corner", I am throwing in the towel. You'll never learn how to behave, and I have options. I'm out. So long sourpusses!!!!!! read more

Got there just before closing and needed propane tank exchange and painter's drapes for the impending freeze. Staff very helpful and friendly despite my shoeing up 5 minutes before closing. These guys have everything - including customer service. Looking for a special wrench or hinge for a special project? They have it. Need your hatchets or chain saws sharpened? They can do that. Cabinet hardware. Duct stuff, saw blades, knives to cut any surface, cable, chain cutters, adhesives, reflective tapes and signs, cleaners, garbage cans, fans...if you need it, they likely have it. Seriously. How often do you just wander around a big box store looking for whatever it is you need - including customer service? And half the time when you can find someone who works at the big box store they aren't much help. This place is packed to the brim with do dads and handy things. And everyone who works there knows exactly where they keep it. It's not much more expensive than your discount stores. Knowing I'm getting what I actually need the 1st time is worth the extra couple bucks. read more
