Many years ago I purchased a small table lamp for my office desk that I have kept all of this time. Recently the twist on off switch broke and I took it to The Shade Tree for an estimate and possible repair. I didn't want to spend much money on it because of it's age and asked Shade Tree for just an estimate. A couple of days later they called me to say it was repaired. Before I could feel upset I was informed the total cost was just $3.82. Of course I was happy by that and returned later to pick it up, The folks there were friendly and I appreciated the low cost. This is a fine place to bring your lamp for repairs and of course they sell new ones too. The selection of light fixtures looked to be quite large. I would be happy to return. read more

I drove here to pick a new lampshade. No one helped or offered to help. Good selection. I picked two lampshades as I was not sure which color would work better, and they said of course I could return the one that didn't work. That was at about 4 pm on a Saturday -- store is closed Sundays and only open 10 - 5:30 weekdays. No price tags on the shades, BTW - surprised to see a $220 charge but oh well, I was returning one. Got home, picked the shade, and decided to return the other one. Not able to go during the week as I work and cannot make it all the way to that part of town, so decided to return the first available weekend - two weeks later. When I return it, they tell me gift card only as my return was more than 3 days after purchase and they consider 3 days very generous. Also, they tell me the gift card is only good for one year. Then they give me a gift card that doesn't even show the amount of the return. Sales person tells me that she keeps track of her money matters, to imply that if I lose the receipt and don't know amount or date of return, that is on me. I ask for the manager's name. They don't have one, just an owner. I ask for owner's name: William Smith. I ask for his phone number; he does not have one. I feel like I have been robbed. Product is nice but their business practices are not. No price tags, ridiculously restrictive return policy, no manager and absent owner with a name akin to John Doe? Never again. read more

We made a couple of trips recently to the Shade Tree in order to have a lamp fixed and to find a much nicer shade to go with it, having found the one which came with it to be pretty ugly as well as too darkening. To our delight, they were able to do a marvelous repair on our lamp and to fit us up with great shades, both for this lamp and for a newly polished pair of brass lamps. To our surprise, we found a fantastic frame shop located in the same premises and will likely go there in the future, especially for family portrait framing. The Shade Tree also has some great lamps and other fixtures there, as well as a generous selection of lamp finials, etc. I only wish they were closer to where we live! read more

It's so easy to order lamp shades from Amazon...but DON'T DO IT! We visited the Shade Tree yesterday and were treated wonderfully by Zandra. She's an expert and helped us tremendously as we brought in 4 lamps for shade replacement. She guided us through the selection process; we couldn't have done it without her. We ended up with 5 new shades and 5 beautiful finials - and at very reasonable prices! Four of the five shades were under $100; for quality shades, that's a very good price. Really disappointing customer service. We had to source 9 lamp shades for a client project (as an interior design business), and brought back the ones that did not work (only 2 out of the 9) within their 3 day return timeframe. They were still in their full & complete wrapping, and again, within the timeframe outlined on their receipt. They would not accept them back and refund us, and were unwilling to work with us at all. All around it was a really negative experience. I very rarely write reviews unless I really felt like the customer service was off. In which case, this was - and we won't be sourcing lamps or lampshades through in the future, nor recommending them to our client base or community. read more

Employees at both locations border on rude- they won't even acknowledge your presence until they have to. I confirm with the other reviewer that the prices are much higher for comparable lamp shades. Plus their return policy is ridiculous; you have to bring in the lamps to buy shades and only then are the shades returnable. If you don't bring in the lamp, you receive store credit only. My two word response, "Amazon Prime". I was willing to pay the high price for the shades - the fact is that as a brick and mortar retail, they had the product for me to see and touch. Those qualities in the store are worth the extra price. But the rudeness and return policy had me back on-line. read more

ITS HOT HOT HOT IN THIS PLACE!!!!! The temperature is wayyy too hot to enjoy shopping in this lovely place!!! Every year the temperature here is more miserably hot making a trip to purchase a shade a sweaty trip more comparable to a trip to "hot yoga!!" Why don't they have AC like other retail stores?? Cutting my shopping urge off here! No ONE enjoys feeling like your shopping in a hot flea market warehouse when your paying prices for an exclusive decor item. Friendly and very appoligetic staff cant make you sweat less while trying to soldier through a shopping venture here. I can't comment on Brian's review, however, I can comment on mine. When I lived in Houston, I shopped at the shade tree regularly. I always found their staff overly attentive and available to answer any question I needed. When it comes to price, I think the consumer should do their due diligence. I've gotten some extremely good buys there. I was recently back in town for business and actually stopped bye and purchased a lamp I took home with me. Not to mention the fact that they're definitely the best custom frame shop in Houston. I've had several pieces of art custom frame there and they've always done an excellent job. read more

Warning - The Shade Tree has a VERY SHORT return policy. Refund during first 3 days only, store credit from 3 to 10 days, no returns after 10 days. They have a large sign next to the check out counter that lists all sorts of rules around returns - BUT does not say anything about the 3 day return policy. They do have it stated at the bottom of your receipt. I had two lamps wired (and paid way too much to have them done there). I was in a hurry when I went to pick them up and didn't have a lot of time to shop for the shades. The salesperson talked me into going ahead and picking out the shades since it would "save me from making another trip". So I went ahead and bought shades and told her that I was taking these out of town to a country house. I asked if I could return them if they didn't work out, and she said "sure". She didn't mention anything about 3 days - I knew that I wouldn't be back in town in time so definitely would not have bought them if I had known. I got back in town and went the next day to return them (7 days). As I was getting out of the car, I noticed the policy on the bottom of the receipt. Too late - too bad. Store credit only, which I do not want to use. There are not many lamp shade stores in Houston. This place has been around forever and knows that you don't have many other options. They are overpriced and not very customer friendly. read more

This is a wonderful place for Lamps, Shades, Repairs and accessories. The best location is this , the Fountainview location, its the original. The owners are 2 sisters, one is Cinthia Smith, we did not meet the other sister. The lady that was so helpful for us was Xandra Cummings. There was also other employees Male & Female who were very helpful. Xandra knows the business (and the owners do). We bought 2 lovely Dale Tiffany lamps, they were special ordered for us and we were able to open these in the shop with Xandra & Cinthia present to make sure nothing was broken or damaged. We are very pleased with our purchase, the attention given to us by the owner and employees of the Fountainview location. They corrected the problem with had with the person working at the Memorial location. They made sure we were happy. We also purchased some Lamp Shade Brushes to clean our lamp shades with. Everyone took care to help us and make up for the bad service at the Memorial location. They certainly did help us and went out of their way to help us. Also several years ago we bought a lovely silk lampshade for one of our Art Deco lamps that was in their large inventory. We recommend their quality shades, they are not cheap but they are worth the price for the quality. You want a job done right with Lamps this is the place. I do not recommend the Memorial location, the lady who works there does not listen to the customer and was rude, certainly not the type of person we can deal with. I would also like to recommend the Framing Shop next door to the Fountainview location (named My Workshop Picture Framing) which is also owned by the Smith Sisters. Don't go here. They are way overpriced, 3-4x more expensive than other retailers for the products I purchased. Return policy is very difficult as well, even on a same-day return of a product that didn't function; they refused to take the defective product back and refund the cost. I was not able to find the shade that met my unique requirements, however, Zandra spent over 30 minutes trying, including 15 minutes on the phone with the original shade manufacturer in New York. She was knowledgeable, pleasant and professional. She discovered that my shades were not stock but had been special ordered about 30 years ago. I will definitely go back to seek her help should I need lamp shades in the future. read more
