Bento craving satisfied. At the corner of Truxton and Oak is this obscure little Bento place that has good food. This place is true to its name...It is a Japanese diner that serves quick Japanese meals. Bento and Sushi appear to be the specialties. I had the Chicken and Salmon Teriyaki Lunch Bento. It came with a small salad, miso soup, California rolls, vegetable and shrimp tempura, and steamed rice. My husband opted for just the Teriyaki Chicken and Tempura bento. We really enjoyed the tempura. Flavor and texture was just right. The teriyaki chicken and California rolls were average. Just enough to satisfy. We ordered the dynamite roll on the side. For cooked sushi, it was a little heavy but delicious. Would be okay as a meal by itself. The ambience was little "divey." Their glass door had foil to block the sunlight. The furniture and decor looked dated. If you want a quick and yummy Japanese meal, this is definitely worth checking out. read more

I've passed this little gem soo many times since my family moved to Bakersfield in '07, and finally got to try Bento Express for the first time last weekend. I have been sleeping on them! I noticed Bakersfield ain't iinto fresh fish out here, they're all into the usual chicken/beef teriyaki.. but if you want some quality, reasonably priced fresh sushi check out this little gem, y'all know you been curious about waiting on the 4way stop of Truxtun and Oak!! We got to talk to one of the owners, "J", he only gets premium Toro and Uni, and sadly they just ran out. My partner and I got 2 rolls, Orange Blossom and Spicy Tiger, and also tried their yellowtail, albacore, and mackerel.. ALL quality! read more

Wow! I can't believe I've been driving by this place for over 5 years! I work a block away and live a mile away. I had a veggie roll and seaweed salad for lunch today. It was delightful, and they actually added chopsticks to my bag without my needing to ask for them (good, because I always forget). I even got enough horse radish paste to make it to the end of my veggie roll. I was very happy with the way my salad was made. It was delish! This place is such a hidden gem. Nice people. Nice clean place. And friendly atmosphere. Reasonable prices. I wish their meat quality was a little better. The teriyaki chicken flavor had a low quality taste to me. In other words not the highest quality fresh flavor. I tried to mask it at home with rice vinegar, sriracha and green onion but I couldn't . The flavor still came through. I did not try their beef but I imagine it is the same. In order to have these good prices it probably requires sourcing meats from lower priced options. The sushi was ok. The sashimi was ok. They weren't exceptional but I would eat the sashimi again! I know the chef trained in Japan. They seemed to put a lot of attention in the detail of the sushi. Thank you! read more

Sushi quality is amazing it's the best in Bakersfield, by far (if you want bang for your buck)!! If you want something other than sushi go for the teriyaki or tempura. Pro tip: ask for the tempura to be fried a tad bit longer for that extra crunch. Or do what I do and always go with what Jay recommends (tell him Yessica sent you). read more

I placed a takeout order for the sushi bento and it was ready for pickup in ten minutes! The portions are huge, service was excellent, and the interior was cute! Good food. Friendly service. Curry chicken is awesome and my usual go to food here. I've also had the unagi bowl which is pretty tasty as well. I've taken my mother here who is first generation Japanese and she says it's pretty good as well (which says a lot since she can't stand most "Japanese" eateries here lol). The only thing is it's a small restaurant and if you want a seat you need to go early or go right at opening otherwise the place fills up pretty quick. Of course this was pre-pandemic and maybe it's even harder to get seats now. It's a great place to get take out though and I love supporting good local businesses like these. By far one of the best japanese restaurants in Bakersfield, the customer service was amazing, the atmosphere is nice and cozy. I ordered a bento box, wife had tempura sushi, and we loved it all!!!! Went here the day after they opened to the public. The service was good., staff very friendly and helpful. We didnt get spoons for the soup and one of the orders were wrong but overall the service was good. The food was very good. I love that you can choose steamed or fried goyza as Im not a fan of the fried ones. Overall the food was very good. We were given miso soup which most of the time I dont like, but here it was very good as was the edamame which I normally do not like at all. The one thing I did not like was the mussels, they came with a spicy (mildly) mayo sauce and we cannot eat spicy foods. I would definitely go again, and recommend to others read more

Went back again for the food cuz it is great, but the service still wasn't good. I was denied sides of sauce, I even offered to pay extra and he rudely said no. He told me they were too expensive. I understand things are expensive, but if you own a restaurant and want the customers to keep coming back shouldn't you do anything you can? I know I do when I work. Trying to decide where to go for dinner is a pretty difficult decision for me, especially if I am trying to decide which sushi place to go to. It was between Ichiban on Oswell and Bento. I had never been to either places so I decided to give Bento a try after hearing my best friend talk it up. Boy, did it fall short of my expectations. Although the owner and the few staff members they had on the floor were very nice, the whole experience was hit or miss, it was also EXTREMELY overpriced for the quality of the food. We started off with plum wine, a bottle of Asahi Super Dry, and an order of fried Gyoza. Our server also brought out complimentary miso soup and edamame, which was awesome. The Gyoza was piping hot and had great flavor. Everything was great until we got to the entrees. My best friend order a vegetable tempura roll and a bowl of spicy ramen. I ordered a shrimp tempura roll and curry rice. I was super excited to see that a place in Bakersfield had Japanese style curry on their menu because it is one of my all time favorite foods. I was extremely disappointed when I actually tasted my curry. I noticed when it came out that it looked very gooey and almost congealed. It tasted and smelled EXACTLY like the Golden brand curry that you can buy from the store. All you have to do is heat it up and add whatever meat you want. I cannot say for sure that this is what I was served but that is what it tasted like. Although the curry was hot the rice was lukewarm and seemed old. My sushi was okay. Nothing special. The eel sauce on top was sort of congealed just like the curry. The tempura inside was not warm which was a bit disappointing. My best friend's sushi was a vegetable tempura roll and it was ten times better than mine. The tempura was still warm, too! I was a bit jealous. His ramen was just regular ramen with some kind of spicy seasoning served on the side that he could add himself. Since it ended up being super spicy (he added a ton of seasoning) and my curry was hot, we needed some water. When I asked the owner for water, she only brought one. We had to share it. Our dinner ended up being around $50. Too expensive for what we received. Overall I'm not sure if I will come back here. I would rather pay the same price for better food and service elsewhere. read more
