Hearty and great for those times when you want home cooked comfort food in large amounts. I especially like their omelettes (usually tender/not overcooked) and hash browns (not underdone and crisped on the outside and soft on the inside). I also enjoy the corned beef hash (comes w 2 eggs). Update: I have eaten in the restaurant 3 times with family. They have friendly, very attentive servers and just good service all around. Kari/Carrie served us each time, and on the 3rd visit, she remembered everything extra we asked for the table on the last visits ! Benny is also gregarious and friendly. The rest of the time I have done takeout. Prices are lower in person or if you call in your order versus order on DoorDash. It is also nice that they are open Mondays. Excellent hangover breakfast delivery... ordered this morning for delivery via UberEats. Got the Western Omelette which comes with a side of toast and jam and choice of hash browns or grits. I got the former. Hearty and really just does the job. Omelette was packed with the fillings (did not skimp). Was a little overdone/gummy but good flavor. Hash browns were good. Listen, sometimes you just want a hearty breakfast and don't want to do the work yourself. Now, it seems silly to order breakfast to go. Eggs are pretty easy to cook, after all, but you know what isn't easy? Getting the perfect crisp on a skillet of hashbrowns, or flipping a pancake to get it the right golden brown while completely cooked and fluffy inside. Sometimes you just don't want to do it! And sometimes you don't want to do it AND stay in your PJs. And when that happens you can order a delicious delivery breakfast from Benny's. Portions are more than ample, everything is cooked perfectly and arrives via delivery in great condition. It can be hard to nail that but somehow they pull it off (no overcooked eggs, soggy potatoes, etc). We live a good 10 minutes away and somehow it makes it to our door like it was coming from just down the street. It's nothing fancy but for a solid diner breakfast? You can't go wrong. read more

Only one server for the entire place (doing her best, to be fair), but dishes get cleared banquet-hall style the moment they see you're 70% done. This was a great breakfast! The service was friendly and made me feel like it was a genuine home cooked meal. Our server was really good and I'm bummed I didn't catch her name. We ordered a bunch of food. The egg sandwich came out first. The bread was perfectly toasted. The egg and cheese were also cooked just right. I would definitely order this again. It wasn't complicated but it was delicious. The coffee cup stayed full of a house brew that was fantastic. The creamer was on the table in those small mini containers. The omelette came next. This is a great breakfast place on South State Street, near the Athletics Campus of UM. The dive where Michael Phelps ate all his training meals between workouts at the Michigan pool, before breaking Olympic records. Great food but nothing fancy. Always busy but worth the wait! Benny's is an old school family diner located in Ann Arbor, very close to the U of M. This was a solid 4/5 star experience for an afternoon lunch with great food and service. I ordered the fish and chips and modified the fries to come with chili. The cod fish was well cooked and perfectly crispy, perhaps a bit too greasy but that's to be expected of a joint like this. It's exactly what I wanted after a long day of exploring the campus for hours in the hot sun. The fries themselves were great and thick enough to sustain the chili without becoming soggy or falling apart. The chili was standard, again nothing crazy to write home about, but delicious nonetheless. The slaw was refreshing with just enough mayo. I also tried a bite of the spinach omelette which was flavorful and packed a good punch with the feta in my bite. 4/5 for food. 5/5 for customer service. 4/5 for ambiance. This is a great place for a quick, casual bite. It's nothing fancy, very homey and reliable for a warm plate of comfort food. read more

I got to try this place out for Sunday brunch, and they were super packed! My party had to wait around 20 minutes to be seated, which was perfectly fine since they were so busy. I ordered the corned beef hash with two over medium eggs and hash browns (this came with toast + jam) and a half order of chocolate chip pancakes. The food came out exceptionally fast despite Benny's being super packed. The corned beef hash and hash browns was good--just super classic. Their toast is not as crispy and toasty as other toasts I've tried at other diners. The chocolate chip pancakes were a little dry; I had to drench them in maple syrup to get them down my throat. My friend got their steak and eggs, and he said the steak wasn't fresh at all. I also saw that there were parts of the steak that were severely undercooked. I'm guessing people don't order that dish often, so they don't always have fresh steak. Overall, the food is average and like any other diner. Benny's service is super good though! Despite being super busy, our waitress was always easy to flag down, and she checked in on us multiple times throughout the meal to see how we were doing. I have been to this establishment a few times in the past, this was a staple for many high school afternoons and off campus lunches. Yesterday, my partner and I decided that we wanted to get some Bennys for my birthday breakfast. We got what we were anticipating to be an amazing breakfast until a few bites in we see a bug in one on the omelettes. We found a dead bug in an omelette. Being that this was supposed to be a birthday breakfast, I was quite irritated but was trying to be kind about the situation. My partner called Benny's to tell them we found a bug in our food, the service worker seemed to not think it was a big deal. She then proceeded to tell my partner the kitchen was closed and that there was nothing more to do until tomorrow. Mind you, this is at 2:20. On the establishment door, it says they are open including the kitchen until 3:30pm. We decide to drive up to Benny's, yet again. Once we got there, it seemed as if the service worker and cook were suggesting that the bug did not come from their establishment. She then proceeded to ask my partner 'what kind of bug is this?' as if we were supposed to be bug experts. They then proceeded to try to refund us only for one of the food items purchased and suggested that we should keep the other food. We lost our appetite and trust for this place. Needless to say, my birthday breakfast was absolutely disgusting. I will not be returning to Benny's. This was absolutely ridiculous and horrifying. read more

Everything was tasty - the bacon was cooked to perfection and the sunny side up egg was done just right. French toast had a cinnamon taste that added to the flavor. The egg white turkey omelette was bland, but shame on me. That was just bad ordering. It tasted how it should have tasted :( The walls are decorated with photos of athletes. Benny's seems like one of those Ann Arbor places everyone knows about and everyone raves about! I can see why. It's a pretty great diner and despite living near it for 6 years, I never went in there until recently! My husband and I came for breakfast one Sunday and it was great! The menu is pretty standard diner food, so we split an omelette and also a Belgium waffle with strawberries. The service was super friendly, the food came out in a timely manner and was delicious and met our expectations! I don't know if I'd say it's the best diner food I've had, but I know I'll be back because it's close to my house, fare prices and it's delicious! read more

Needless to say all was fine until the older waitress was walking away and made the joke "I wouldn't order it as we don't have the original box before we cooked it...so we don't know for sure the ingredients...you wouldn't want to be dead would you? I've been here twice. Once for breakfast and once for lunch. Both times were great experiences. I have to share how amazing their lamb gyro is. The cuts of lamb are cut just perfect and the meat is cooked so it is moist, but has a nice crust. All of the onions, tomatoes, and lettuce were fresh and had a nice crisp to them. The sauce was also amazing. The folks are really friendly on top of that. Given the current capacity restrictions, there can be a wait because the place is rightfully popular. The last place that I would like to be on a chilly Saturday morning would be a wet, crowded parking lot. A warm bed, wrapped up in blankets, sounds like a far superior experience than being slowly drizzled upon by Mother Nature, as fighting off the cold in an asphalt field is never an enjoyable experience. But that realization would only occur to me hours after indulging myself in a bountiful meal at Benny's Family Dining, which in retrospect, is surely the only reward worth frozen hands and soaked shoes. Upon first entering the establishment, I had only wished to have been born a salmon, as I now knew first-hand what it felt like to be a sardine. Packed close with my sardine brethren, I meandered my way up to the counter to place my name with the host, and was assured that in no longer than 25 minutes I will be seated, not any further from a hot cup of coffee than at arm's length. I acknowledged the good news with reserved glee, and returned to the sardine-packed waiting area. After only a couple moments, I realized my patience would be tested less by the cold outdoors than the close confines of other patrons. After a short 25 minutes, my wish was granted by a jean-wearing-genie, and my party of 4 was seated, comfortably sheltered from the persisting cold that is often accompanied with the change of seasons. A mind-reading wait staff was only one of the reality-shattering features of Benny's Family Dining. My mystical waitress not only knew my desire for coffee was deep-seeded in my psyche, but that half and half was the unspoken yin to my breakfast experience yang. But her talents did not stop there, as even as I was guzzling coffee faster than the speed of light, I could never reach the bottom of my mug. As an owl in the night, she was ever vigilant, and ever determined, to keep my coffee hot and my mug full. That is something not taught, but a gift given at birth. Bravo. Although far from the Wild West, the Western omelette somehow saddled up and made its way onto my plate, along with a hefty portion of hash browns to go along with. After drowning both in Frank's RedHot Sauce, my attention was shifted towards my freshly warmed wheat toast, which begged to be smothered in Smucker's Strawberry Jam. It didn't take long for me to be seeing my own reflection in my freshly-cleaned plate, and my only regret was not ordering more food. Nevertheless, I was able to unwind and satisfy my tastebuds with the aforementioned endless supply of coffee. Benny's Family Dining was unforgettable, but I am unsure as to why. Perhaps the juxtaposition of physically draining weather and nourishing food made this experience one to remember. Or could it have been the straight-forward banter between the host and myself that made this visit hard to forget. I was out on a long walk, and as it started to snow, I thought I would pop into a nearby Cafe to grab lunch and get out of the weather. Immediately upon entering, I was greeted by a friendly server. I sat at a table and was immediately asked what I wanted to drink. Keeping the story short, the server was incredible. The Chicken Gyro was delicious, as was the Lemon Chicken soup and fries.
