I thought I'd treat myself to a brow service so I made an appointment to come to this brow bar conveniently located in the Macy's department store close to where I live. In addition to the regular waxing services they offer here they also do brow plucking as well. I am allergic to wax so I chose to have my brows plucked as an alternative to waxing. After a very short wait the person working on me showed me to a seat to sit in for the service and got started to work on me. She explained everything she was doing and also gave me some good tips for brow care. I recently started working downtown and have been needing to get my eyebrows done.The lady that I usually go to is in Dorchester and I commute to work by train. Knowing that my usual eyebrow lady is now out of the way due to my car remaining home while I take the T into the city, I start to panic. I get on Yelp, discovered The Brow Bar, and decided to go in on a leap of faith. After reading reviews I knew to ask for Meagan. I walked in confidently asking for Meagan only to find out that she wasn't working that day. I shared my anxiety with the staff who were so chill about. Leslie assured me that she would hook me. 3/30/17: Brow update! Because Meghan is nothing short of an artist! I can't begin to explain how much more even and full my brows are now after having been going to see Meghan exclusively for the past 6 months. I've resisted the urge to pluck and haven't even pulled a single hair myself and it's really paid off! --------------- I have definitely had bad eyebrow experiences in the past...and not bad as in half my brow was ripped off, but bad as in uneven, over plucked or not shaped well. As someone who is absurdly anal about their eyebrows, I never thought I could entrust these brows to anyone and that I was subject to a lifetime of sitting in front of magnifying mirror for approx an hour each month meticulously tweezing each hair myself. I was reluctant when a friend of mine suggested the Benefit Brow Bar, but she was so confident and her brows were pretty fleeky. So I called and made an appointment fo myself and another friend! The only ding against this place is that there isn't a whole lot of flexibility here. It's not their fault, they're just very busy and it's a small space. I was running about 5-10 minutes late and I called only to hear that if I didn't make it within the 5 minute grace period, I'd have to re-schedule...this wasn't an option since it was my birthday and I was NOT going to have mediocre Birthday Brows so I had to high tail it sprint into the store to make it in time. Thankfully, Meaghan understood the struggle and blocked out the empty time slot behind my friend and I so she wouldn't have to rush us. She walked us through every step of the process, complete with brow mapping and she was open to looking at pictures of our brow goals. By the end of the process, Meaghan had spent at least 30 minutes on each of us, making sure our eyebrows were perfect and not a hair was out of place! Indian girls. We're a hairy species. So I went to the Benefit Brow Bar after hearing good things about it on Yelp. I had Seana. The experience wasn't that good. Service leaves much to be desired. Lip and brow wax. Lip turned out fine. The brows...not so much. They came out a little uneven at the end, but the bigger issue was that for two weeks after, the area that had been waxed remained really, really shiny and the skin was reddish. You could clearly see the exact outline of where the wax had been. Two weeks. I'm not kidding. I've never had that happen before or after this experience. I don't know about Seana's ability to chat though. My eyebrows have a little dip naturally on the upper corners. It's something I inherited from my dad. So the convo goes: Seana: You know what's weird about your eyebrows? Me: (Umm...I didn't know anything was wrong with them...) Seana: They do this weird thing here. *pokes* Me: Yeah, my dad has that too. I get it from him. Seana: Well, the only way you can fix it is with brow filler. Me: (Umm...I didn't know it was something that needed to be fixed.) Uh, no that's fine thank you. Seana: *stare* Really? It would look a lot better if you filled it in. Me: I'm pretty low maintenance. I think I'm good. *some time later* Seana: You SURE you don't want me to fix it for you? *and later* Seana: Are you really SURE you don't want me to fill it in? Alright sister, I get it. You want to fill my brows in, then hawk the products on me. But seriously, no means no. Do you see what I'm wearing? I'm a 23-year old in a bright red high school band hoodie, my hair's in a ponytail, and I can't remember if I showered today. Do I really look like someone who plans on filling in their eyebrows every day? After that, they do the complementary service where they slather makeup on your face. Way way wayyyy too much makeup. It was like cake. Frankly, I was getting hungry looking at my reflection. Wait, that's disgusting. Anyway, in the end they try to get you to buy the makeup products. I use the same sentence that I basically don't wear makeup, but thanks all the same. I got plenty of frowns and the girl huffed and then went over to the register to ring up my bill. Then, she slammed down a little envelope for me to tip, apparently. Which I did, although I was annoyed as hell. So, it ended up being about 30 bucks or so. I haven't been back and doubt that I will be. Supposedly they won Best Brows in Boston from the Improper, but for me I think I'd rather stay bushy than fork over that much cash for that kind of service. read more

I went to Leeba for eyebrow waxing last time, and was not impressed, so I figured I'd walk over to Macy's and just see who the new Benefit eye brow person was since Alex left and see what they said when they saw my hot mess eyebrows. I have three weddings the next three weekends so I was a little nervous about going to a new person, but Kathie explained to me exactly what she was thinking and made sure I was OK with the plan. Benefit has brought space in Macy's at Downtown Crossing and they offer waxing services at their cosmetic counter. The experience is a bit different than the typical eye brow waxing process. First off, you are in the middle of Macy's and complete strangers are watching you. That said, they only offer facial waxing services for obvious reasons. Also, you are sitting upright on a stool. So, if you want privacy and a relaxing environment, this is not the place for you. The Brow Bar is set up like a hair salon, with individual stations for each aesthetician, although there was only one the day I went. The brow wax took about 15 minutes and they apply Benefit make up after wards so you don't walk around with red face. I'm extremely happy with the results - both brows look the same and have a nice clean shape and arch. The brow wax costs $18, but beware, they will try to sell you benefit products and you may end up spending more than you intended when you walk out. However, I'm a fan of bad girl lash and their lip glosses. They also gave me a free sample of their new facial wash. When you pay at the cash register, they'll give you and envelope to put your tip in and you definitely should! They seem to get busy on the weekends, so be prepared to wait. read more

I was so happy when Boston finally opened a Benefit Brow Bar. When I lived in California I went religiously to the Benefit Brow Bar for two years - they use the highest quality wax and are trained to create a perfect brow everytime. Plus, they will touch up your makeup afterwards. It's your choice whether to buy products or not - don't let them pressure you if you don't want to spend money. I stopped in today for the first time and have a pleasurable experience. First off, it had been at least a month since I did anything with brow upkeep. It was a sad state of affairs, and was a situation that was very overdue to be rectified. I walked in without an appointment and was seated right away with Ashley. She made sure I was okay with the general shape and what she was going to do, and she worked her brow magic. I like that she took the time to make sure to rip all the little fine, blond hairs out with the wax, because that's really why I go for eyebrow waxing. I can't get them all with a tweezer and they are annoying. She made sure my brows looked really good, and then touched up my make up as well, which was a mess because I'd walked from Somerville earlier in the day. This is where they get ya in hopes of you giving up all of your money. I was touched up with various delightful and expensive products, of which one I bought. I got a little eyebrow fixing set, because my eyebrows are half blond jerks, who look best when I put in powder to make them less blond. It wasn't cheap, but it was a nice product. $20 isn't bad for a brow wax (okay, it's DOUBLE that of my place in Union Square, but it looks good and everyone speaks english) so I don't mind the price. I'm so conflicted about this rating because as far as brows go, I would honestly give it a 5 star rating. They do a great job. Quick, efficient and they always come out looking amazing. AND for only $20? Yes please!! Sign me up. This is where my conflict comes to play. Five stars for brows... My lashes beg to differ. They hurt. The ones the haven't been yanked out, that is. Negative stars for the lashes. This weekend I went to get a set of lashes put on. I've had them done before at The Beauty Mark but didn't want to shell out $150. I'm kicking myself and (literally) crying in pain. They looked great but throughout the night I noticed that they were really irritating my lids. Kept poking me. Then I tried to sleep. Forget about it. So why not remove them, you ask? I've TRIED! I put Olive Oil, warm soap and water, baby oil and even scoured the streets of Boston for eye lash glue remover...They are so clumped on there with loads of black tar-like glue that it's impossible to get them off without ripping out my own lashes. (Which, by the way, is incredibly painful). If this is Karma for anything I've ever done, I'M SORRYYYYY! (Now please let the remaining 3 clumps fall out soon, k thanks). ::UPDATE:: They are out now. All of them. I probably lost 30 lashes and have a gash on my eye, not joking. If anyone wants to see pictures, ask me and I'll send on. read more

Now I know that I have sang the praises for the threading spa for my eyebrows, however they have let me down. I am learning slowly that you have to pay a little bit more for better quality, my reason spending 20 dollars on my eyebrows...expensive right? But it's worth it. You are able to do a mini consultation with the girl who will be doing your eyebrows. You can explain how you like your eyebrows and any problem areas you may have. Also I appreciate the fact that they offer to fill them in for you. Perfect if you need to clean up and look sharp and natural before you continue your night out. Each lady I dealt with was wonderful and they consistently do a good job. So my 20 dollars here beats my 8 to 12 dollars anywhere else! read more

I like this place, they tame my brows (or more accurately put: my brow) and chat you up. It'd be awesome not to be persuaded so heavily to purchase their make up line, but the stuff is good, they'll use it on you when you leave so it doesn't look like you've been punched in the forehead, and I get why they do it. Ultimately however, get some under-armour: say no when you don't want to purchase more makeup you likely don't need. I'm saying this to no one in particular, or as a means to warn everyone out there. Time of visit: 6pm on a Weds. evening. Wait Time: None, I didn't have to wait at all. Atmosphere: Everyone is friendly, and I was welcomed right away. The space is open-it's on the first floor of Macys-so if you're not comfortable getting waxed in front of people this isn't the place for you. The waxing chairs are close together, and you can get a little clumsy if you have a bunch of bags. Price: $27 for eyebrows and upper lip, plus tip. Experience: I sat down in a chair, where a technician began applying makeup to my face. She explained what she was using (pore skin smoother, foundation, and blush) and the correct way to use the products. I was then transferred to another chair where another technician (Alex) did my waxing. What I liked: Everyone is polite and friendly. Alex is a a decent waxer, she was quick and it was virtually painless. They used pre and post waxing products that reduce redness and get rid of that post-wax look. Getting the makeup done before hand was a nice extra, but I do wish I had the option to skip it. Alex did listen to what I wanted (a more full shape), and didn't make my eyebrows super skinny. What I didn't like: Alex was a little messy when it came to creating polished eyebrows. The ends weren't done correctly, and I had to finish them at home. At the end the person who rang me up automatically gave me a small envelope to place my tip in, which I thought was rude. Instead of automatically handing me an envelope they could have had a bunch at the counter so I could take one if I wanted to. The pushing makeup thing: My first technician told me about the products she was using, and (politely) asked if I was interested in them. I said I would "think about it", and she got the hint. The Brow Bar is run by Benefit Cosmetics, so mixing the makeup with the eyebrows is to be expected (Sephora does something similar). Personally I didn't buy the products because I'm poor and I felt like the products didn't match my skintone (I'm Indian). Final Judgement: Come here if you need to tame your brows ASAP, have some extra time on a lunch break, or don't want to schlep out to Newbury St. read more

I honestly used to love, love, love this place, but it's seriously gone downhill recently. The most recent (and definitely last) time I went, a friend came with me and browsed around while I had my eyebrow appointment with Danielle. Even from a distance of at least 3 yards, my friend could clearly see that this stylist's roughness was making me cry. Was the pain worth it? No. Instead of a classic, elegant arch, I was left with fuzzy, uneven caterpillars above my eyes, painted with dark brown eyebrow makeup (literally an insult to injury!). Look, I get it. Full brows are on trend. Guess what? Not everyone wants them. Danielle neither listened to my preferences nor shaped my brows with any kind of gentleness (which is kind of key when you're dealing with that sensitive part of the face.) read more

I got my eyebrows done at this location this past weekend and had a great experience. I usually prefer to go to the Newbury Street Benefit Boutique because it's a bit easier for me to get to, but I had a $10 off brow wax coupon only valid at the Benefit Brow Bar inside of Macy's so I made an exception. I visited this Benefit at Macy's once in the past and saw Leslie, but I had a really average experience and so I didn't make it a point to come back. I took an Uber here because I was strapped for time and arrived at 6:04 p.m. for my 6:00 p.m. appointment since the traffic was so bad. They have a five minute grace period for your appointment so I was able to keep mine just in time. I saw Megan based on the Yelp recommendations and I was so pleased with this decision. She did a great job of mapping out my brows and cleaning up around where she had filled them in, which was great. She listened to my requests and was super patient, and I left with beautiful brows and a smile. I would definitely recommend Megan if you're looking to get your brows done here! Tip: MAKE AN APPOINTMENT! Call them and ask what's available. Otherwise, you might get appointment shamed like I did the first time I came here earlier this year (without an appointment) or like the girls walking by to ask about availability when I was here on Friday. read more

I was very happy to find this Brow Bar after having gone for a while in CA; it is so much more convenient than the usual nail salons and much higher quality service too. The new policy of doing your makeup beforehand is fun if you have the time. I had Kathy, a slightly older blonde lady. I'm not sure if she is new to the esthetician trade or what, but she seemed somewhat nervous and took FOREVER. I didn't want to hustle her because I thought I might mess her up. I consistently got my brows done there and it was fine, but I just booked an appt today at 540pm, I got stuck at work and called them as I was walking there (538pm), I arrived at 545 (within their ridiculous grace period) and they had already given my appt away.... All I needed was a quick brow trim and I told them I was on my way. They clearly have no respect for loyal customers and have subsequently lost my business and any recommendation I would share with friends. Got waxed here by Seana and she did a fabulous, if slightly dramatic (thin! pointy!) job. My brows are now perfectly matched, which is amazing considering the shape they were in when I walked in, and the fact that I was sitting upright for the waxing. I was warned about the hard sell for cosmetics by other reviews here, so I was expecting it and just told them right off I wasn't interested in the "service" of having them show me the new products (I am a Benefit junkie and have all that stuff anyway, plus they were making people over factory-style and I couldn't see how they were possibly sanitizing the brushes in between). I came for a brow wax and left slightly disappointed. My eyebrows are naturally slightly uneven, and I did ask Daniela to follow my natural brow line, which she did. This means, though, that my brows are currently noticeably uneven and would be difficult to fix with makeup. I would advise anyone coming here to be very specific about what they want and are expecting. It was also a very quick appointment; I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. I'll be going to a different brow waxing location tomorrow to fix my brows since I'm not too keen on having uneven eyebrows in my wedding photos. read more

I always get my brows done at Benefit - I'm totally obsessed with their stuff, so it's a great excuse to stop by and play with the make up. However, I'm not hugely impressed with the Boston Macy's location. You have to book ridiculously far in advance, especially for a weekend appointment. I've never been able to get a walk in appointment there, which all the other department store locations offer. Given how busy the location is, they work quickly. Even in the rush, they do a great job. It's clear the beauticians are trained really well. But at the end of it, you're still in a Macy's. read more

I have been meaning to write this for awhile now. I had an appointment with Megan and I was 9 minutes late due to the train. I called the instant I realized this was the case and I was told they would accommodate through 10 minutes. I think that's the policy, I understand that. The day prior to coming in I called and asked to make an appointment. But, they said "Oh, you could just drop in tomorrow" and made it seem it would be easy and no hassle. Well when I arrived, there was already a few people waiting and was told that I could come again in a few hours for another "drop in appointment" but that I couldn't make the appointment at that time. So, I eventually asked if there were any openings for later and just took one of those. A woman named Kathy did my brows. I never had them waxed before (just tweezed) and had let them grow out for 3 weeks. She was going to clean them up and help give them some definition. Well, I would say she minimally cleaned them and barely defined them. I reacted to the wax with red marks being left in the exact spots that the wax had been applied for over 24 hours later. Also, not all the hairs were removed and her tweeze clean up after the wax was done pretty poorly. Overall, I was not impressed with the job and would not go back again. read more
