Reviewing the hotel and the Stonecutter's restaurant. Hotel: Positives: close proximity to Geneva, especially if you are seeing a show at the Smith Opera House. Beautiful grounds if the weather is good. On Seneca Lake....gorgeous. Wine spigot in the hotel hallway ( limited to one glass per person). We received a coupon for the wine tasting with 10% off of alcohol purchases in the store. The Continental breakfast had a nice assortment of drinks and cold items. Negatives: one word comes to mind...dated. Our room was small with a very limited lake view. The windows haven't been cleaned in a very long time. The television is tiny, like a computer monitor. The spring rod to the curtains kept springing off every time I tried to open or close the drape. The shower is tiny and you can barely turn around. There are few outlets, the only ones I was able to access that worked were in the bathroom ( only one of the double outlet was functional). The carpet in our room appeared to be about thirty years old and worn. This room, called the clay room was advertised on the website to have a queen bed and a refurbished bathroom. The bathroom has not been touched in years and the queen bed turned out to be a full-size bed. Stonecutters: wonderful waitress, who kept our beverages filled and was attentive. My broccoli cheddar soup had negligible cheddar or broccoli. My salad with grilled shrimp was okay. My husband's Cuban sandwich arrived on a stale roll and he thought the fries (weirdly shaped) were reheated. His chili arrived lukewarm. Not a good experience overall. The reviews here are surprisingly bad, but don't let them fool you or keep you from visiting this gorgeous spot if you're anywhere near the Finger Lakes; and ESPECIALLY if you're looking for a great Wedding venue. Bottom line about 99% of the bad reviews, is that the people writing them mostly seem annoyed at (a) the castle being antiquated, and/or (b) the wine at the Winery being a bit too sweet / not that stellar. ...these same people are surprised that a CASTLE built in the 1800s isn't ultra-modernized, and that Belhurst Winery serves FLX-style wine - which is known to be quite sweet on average. Make of that what you will. We've been to this spot at least 5-6 times over the last year, as we've toured Seneca lake and Geneva for special occasions. And we've had a great time, every visit. The castle itself is gorgeous from all angles, but especially from the lawn right by the lake. And you can rent suites (with genuine history) for nightly stays INSIDE the castle itself, and get a gorgeous view of the grounds and the lake depending on the room you select. Pretty awesome bonus and not very common in the United States. We've found the staff here to always be insanely sweet, kind and professional. From the wine tasting experts to the front desk team, to the superb Wedding Planners and special roles that are constantly kept busy at a venue this gorgeous. It's also situated in a great spot - close enough to Geneva to get downtown within 2-5 minutes, but far out enough to not feel crowded and still have that exclusive, somewhat secluded feel to it. The kicker for us though, is that after trying to work with 15-20 different Wedding venues along the East Coast last year, we finally found a place that was genuinely willing to tell us what kind of wedding we could have, with the specific budget we had in mind. 99% of other places will outright lie or exaggerate in order to get your business - and then charge you extra the second you confirm with them. Belhurst was the ONLY location that was willing to work with our budget and make reasonable suggestions / give us a genuine breakdown of what the costs would be, before we ever signed up with them in the first place. So whether you're just visiting or planning the day of your dreams, this is a terrific option to check out; we just stopped by for our 1st anniversary recently and loved it, can't wait to come back again. read more

UPDATE-After giving negative reviews and days of no response, I was finally contacted via email and informed they were refunding $75.00. That is LESS than 10% of our over $800.00 room charge. I recommend using their formula for gratuities when there. Imagine having a dinner bill of $200.00 and only tipping $20.00, apparently that is all the expect, or at least that is how they value their guests. Not worth the money SO DISAPPOINTED WE WILL NEVER GO BACK AND DO NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE. Service sucked! Mold in food, no porters for luggage, no valet parking. I'm sorry for $400+ a night I expect some services. You get better service and breakfast at a Holiday Inn Express!! Just spent 3 days/2 nights in Bellhurst Castle. My niece got married and between our family and his family we rented the ENTIRE castle. Every family suite, every chamber room, rehearsal dinner, wedding, reception. Obviously it cost a shit ton of money. We stayed in the 'Clay Chamber # 5 or 105' both numbers were on the door. GREAT ATMOSPHERE throughout entire castle. Here is the kicker- breakfast was prepackaged muffins, bagels, donuts and coffee. For $400 a night it was a huge disappointment. Everyone drove to town for breakfast. Worst food ever. We ordered from Stonecutters. The pickle with our sandwich looked like it was left out for a month from another persons plate & put on our plate. 84 degree day, no AC. Had to ask bartender to wipe the bar before we ordered. Not a busy day. Only 6 people at the bar. I ordered Vodka with soda water, I was about to the end & noticed my glass had black dirty spots on the bottom of the glass. I about threw up & needles to say, we won't ever be back. This is an older mansion and it is apportioned as such. It was fun and completely fine. It's not been updated and retrofitted to meet unreasonable expectations. The food was good and the service was fine. They have two restaurants operating at once. So slow down and prepare to wait a bit. The view is great and the grounds are kept in good order. We loved the giant tower suite. Sure it's not a high-end and modern accommodation. But the price is reasonable and the experience is unlike anything else I've found Seneca Lake. We were disappointed by our recent visit to Belhurst. We stayed one night in the manor house offsite. The good things were the beautiful setting on the lake, pretty house, and tasty cocktail in the lounge. And, for Valentine's Day, we were given a sweet bottle of wine, a small box of truffles, a free wine of beer tasting in the gift shop, and a 20% off coupon for one of the onsite restaurants. Unfortunately, the rest was subpar. The wine tasting was too sweet for my taste. The bed was very uncomfortable. And, we had a very unfortunate experience at the onsite Edgar's Restaurant where we ended up walking out after almost two hours without food (see my review for more details). I like the oldness of the hotel. We stayed in the Bamboo room, and it is charming and spacious, well-decorated, all you have to deal with is a squeaky bed. I liked the room a lot. We went to Stonecutters, and the service was terrible, not because the kitchen was "under-staffed" and the food took too long (bowl of chili and a spinach salad). The waitress walked past us with my glass of wine, and, as she said, was "looking all over" for who the wine was for. Hello? She took my order not 10 minutes earlier. Yes, and there's the 10 minutes for 1 glass of wine, and she had two other tables, hardly slammed to be that scattered. Our glasses of water came after another 5 minutes. She later walked past us to fill another tables waters, and never came back to fill ours, as we painfully waited for our simple dinner. When the salad arrived with dressing, and I had asked for no dressing, I asked for her to fix it. Not kidding- 15 minutes later I asked about it again and she said a new salad would be 5-10 minutes more. I then asked for the bill, as my friend was done her chili and I had lost my will to eat. Didn't trust the place to stay one minute more. Edgars was basically empty. The website makes it seem so fancy. Maya at Stonecutters was a delight to have as our waitress and Alicia made everything from check in to check out superb. If we had issues they were treated as a top priority and we felt very special. The winery was annoying because we had to stand the whole time, it felt kind of rushed. I will say the lady who poured our wine was such a sweetheart. We went to Belhurst Castle for a quick wine tasting, dinner at Edgar's, and to buy some wine to bring home. We had a large gift card which ended up causing some issues throughout the evening. The wine tasting was pleasant and the staff was knowledgeable about the wine. Pours were consistent as well. The Viognier was the best that we had, while the "Neptune" and "Red's Red" were both solid, semi-sweet table wines. At dinner, the service was friendly and once again knowledgeable. We had a shrimp cocktail, sauteed forest mushrooms with burgundy and herbs, a prime rib, and a Delmonico steak. There was also complimentary parmesan bread with a few compound butters, which were delicious. The shrimp came out quickly, and it was a generally good dish - the shrimp itself was slightly overcooked, but still very edible and the cocktail sauce was very good, with just enough horseradish kick. Unfortunately, after this things went south. The prime rib and Delmonico steak were both ordered medium rare, but came out medium well for the prime rib, and very well done for the steak. To their credit, the waitress did ask that we cut into our dishes and see if we were satisfied. Since it had been about 45 minutes since we placed our order, we decided to just eat what we we received rather than wait for a new dish. The flavor of the prime rib was quite mild, while the Delmonico still had a very good flavor, appropriate amount of seasoning, and a nice char on it. If it had been cooked even to medium or medium well, I'm sure it would have been an excellent steak, but ultimately it ended up being fairly dry and stringy in texture. Both meats came with creamy mashed potatoes, which were pretty good although they needed a bit of salt, and asparagus which needed a few more minutes of cooking as half of the stalks were nearly raw. The mushroom side was extremely bland, and in terms of texture, was a little overcooked. Logistically, it was a bit of a pain using a gift card. We used a large gift card to pay for the tasting, the dinner and the bottles purchased after dinner. Only one employee at the front desk is authorized to re-issue new gift cards with a reduced balance, so each time we paid for anything, we had to wait 10-15 minutes to get our new gift card back. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but, within a 2.5 hour visit, we spent 45 minutes waiting to receive gift cards back, so that was rough. We hoped to spend more time taking in the sights outside, but after the time wasted, could only spend a few minutes sightseeing before heading out. Kudos to the staff who were friendly, attentive and helpful in each case, but seemed to have their hands tied by a process that could be improved in the future. read more

What's a trip to the Fingerlakes without a visit to Belhurst castle? It is gorgeous. I want to go back to visit the spa and stay in the hotel. The ghostlore is very intriguing. The wine tasting options offer something for everyone: wine and cheese, chocolate and cheese, or just plain old wine (sweet, dry, sparkling, red, white). I went with the cheese and wine pairing for 15 dollars. All of the cheeses were delicious, especially the herb garlic! We bought a couple bottles of the Gentlemen's red to enjoy back at our Air BnB. They have a huge gift shop with an amazing selection. The restaurant within the castle has happy hour from 4-6 on weekdays and the bar offers amazing lake views. read more

Dinner at Stonecutters (one of the restaurants on site) was fantastic and the happy hour prices a nice plus. The grounds and view of the lake was fantastic. Stopped by for a wine tasting. Ten dollars for a choice of five wines. I picked my wines as did my companions. The person pouring was young, and had little Knowledge, in my opinion, of wines. He started my tasting with a sparkling wine and then immediately jumped to the sweetest red wine. The sweetness of that wine prevented a true appreciation of the three other drier red wines I chose. It appeared that he just poured whatever he picked up first rather than following an order. I noticed a similar finishing note between two wines and asked what I might be tasting, based on the characteristics of the wines and he said he didn't know. At other venues, the pourers were able to suggest what might be the finishing notes. Overall, despite the gorgeous location, I wouldn't return. read more

While this hotel has plenty to offer, it could use some improving. The location is great for anyone exploring the Finger Lakes region as it's close to wineries, breweries, and restaurants, as well as easily accessible from the thruway. Very good amount of flat parking. Front desk staff could use some reorientation in hospitality. Every time I went to the desk for a question, I felt like I was interrupting the people working there, yet I was the only customer there. There was no staff offered to help guests with bags or luggage racks (there is a total of 3). The rooms have a good amount of space, but could use some updating. The hotel still uses metal keys. Even using physical key cards seems outdated in 2025 when there's plenty of apps out there. There are no USB ports in the room, and the closest ones to my bed were behind the bedside table, making it too far away for a standard phone, smartwatch, or headphones cord. My shower had two adjustable shower heads, neither of which were tall enough to be higher then my head (I'm 5'11") and one didn't stay upright with the adjustable knob that appeared to be wedged to even stay up at all. Water pressure was ok but nothing crazy. I liked that the rooms had fridges. The TVs were pretty small for modern standards and that they're a ways away from the bed in the room. I do want to highlight the two men on housekeeping staff during my stay as they always greeted other guests and myself in a very friendly and genuine manner, and always asked if we needed anything or how they could help. The salon employees were very organized, hospitable, and efficient. We very much enjoyed our experience and care there. Steve the bartender at the wedding I attended was wonderful. I heard from the wedding family that they loved the wedding organizing staff. Addendum: Just heard from a couple who also attended the wedding that the AC in their room was non functional. It was registering 84F in their room and I was a sweltering weekend. They drove home in the middle of the night. I dropped it from 3 stars to two because of this. Not sure about the low ratings - we really enjoyed. Stopped for a glass of wine and found friendly service and were able to wander the grounds which are beautiful. The hotel is set atop high cliffs that overlooks the water. We sat at the bar when we first arrived and the waitress offered a sample of two wines when I couldn't decide. Two people in the group wanted a glass of wine rather than a tasting. They were refused a glass of wine and told to purchase from the Stone Cutter bar. Very odd method of promoting sales at a winery. The server who presented the dry white flight had a fun personality and answered questions I had about the wine. The two who headed over to Stone Cutters placed our group on a wait list for a table. I remained inside and stood at the bar for a very long time waiting for someone to sell me a glass of wine. We finally ventured outside and enjoyed the stunning lake view while waiting for the hostess to call. For lunch we ordered a gouda dip with pita, loaded potato skin special and a beef of weck with fries. None of the entrees stood up unfortunately and the potato skins were comped off the bill. The pita was cold and lacked texture so it was difficult to dip. Beef on weck had almost no flavor just bland. Potato skins had a lot of pulled pork and a dollop of cream cheese inside charred potato skins. If we return it will be only for purchasing wine and enjoying the exterior gardens on the lake. read more

The Buildings , both inside and out are beautiful and well maintained. You are right on Seneca lake and there are benches and a fire pit if you want to enjoy the view. The staff were very polite and friendly during the check in/out, as well as the winery and the Stonecutters restaurant. There were unfortunately several downsides to the overnight. The room was too hot for us and possibly the Air-conditioning was turned off because it was winter. But it was an exceptionally warm day for the Area with the outdoor temperature at 70 degrees and our upstairs room was slightly above that. We were told that it takes several minutes to turn on when we reported it but it never did. In addition both the hot and cold faucets in the bathroom had warm water. The shower temperature was scalding except for a very tiny spot on the temperature control. Stonecutters served us a nice Turkey Panini and salad but it was a 45 minute wait for the food to come out. Belhurst used to have a great hot breakfast buffet but now has a self serve Continental breakfast with styrofoam coffee cups, tear off cereal bowls in thin plastic and premade packaged muffins like you'd find at a 7/11. While at Breakfast we heard several other guests express the same issues we had with the heat and water temperatures. read more

Our evening started at Stone Cutters for a pre dinner cocktail. Service was extremely slow. Dinner consisted of a party of ten in the castle. Service was absolutely pitiful. Drinks were served to nine of the ten guests. The missing drink was finally delivered fifteen minutes later despite multiple reminders. Said drink was a bottle of beer and served without a glass. Dinner service was performed by runners who had no knowledge of who ordered what and correct placement was performed via roll call. One guests order was in error and the correct plate was delivered over 20 minutes later, again after follow up. The food itself was extremely disappointing and frankly disgusting. Water refills only received after request. Server had to be located to obtain check and found socializing with other staff versus performing his job. The establishment was unkept and dirty. The overflow crowd which included us was seated in the Stonecutter's Lounge overlooking the lake. The ambiance sitting there by the stone fireplace was warm and inviting. Tables were spaced nicely observing Covid protocols. My husband ordered off the regular menu and his Delmonico steak, brussel sprouts and other sides were excellent. My prix fixe turkey dinner was terrible. The turkey seemed like deli meat, the mashed potatoes and stuffing were not hot, and both were bland as was the squash soup. Highlights of the meal were the hot loaf of bread topped with garlic served with 3 butters and the desserts : a chocolate raspberry cake and an apple dumpling with ice cream . The waitstaff was attentive in the best way and handled the food allergies at our table like a champ. We ended up sitting and talking after the meal and it got late, but we felt zero pressure around it, so didn't realize we were the only table left until someone went to the restroom and noticed it was late. Just finished a New Year's weekend at the Castle. Terrific stay. Beautiful 140 year old building, terrific location and great restaurants. We had a late dinner at the StoneCutter's on Friday. Friendly and fast service by a young lady and gentleman. The food was terrific, they even arranged some food for guests that arrived after the kitchen closed. Very thoughtful. Breakfast is small- coffee, bagels, fruit, etc. Dinner at Edgar's was excellent. It was a very busy night, but the waitress was terrific. Food was terrific, as was dessert. We stayed in the Otis room. Very nice. Good size and wine on tap. We look forward to returning. read more

What an amazing place this was! The grounds and the hotel as well as the castle were very beautiful. The tasting room was spacious and we were the first people there last Tuesday. My husband was happy that they had beer and I chose the truffles and wine flight. I love chocolate. A bit of truffle the a sip of wine. I was in heaven. Out of the 5 wines I loved 4 of them, but I loved all the truffles. We ended up with three bottles of wine. We learned the history of the castle and of Seneca lake. The chicken was extremely dry and the pasta was overcooked. Two of my friends got seafood dishes that were overpriced and overcooked. After waiting for almost a year for my reservation, I spent the night in this beautiful, somewhat mysterious castle located in Geneva, Ny.I am somewhat adventurous, enjoy scary tales and movies. There are three haunted hotels at Belhurst and I was determined to stay in one of the most active rooms. The tower suite I reserved was simply gorgeous, beautifully decorated and very spacious. The balcony off the suite had chairs where you could sit and enjoy the view. After experiencing some unexplained events, true to accounts of paranormal activity, the room did not disappoint. The castle is listed in the haunted history trail and you may want to read up on its history before making a reservation or you may find an unpaid guest in your room. read more
