Yum. Tasty, cheap and plentiful. The local staff at the airport as well as cabbies and limo guys entirely agree with me it seems. I saw an assortment of them while I was getting my carryout. I had a super kafta sandwich (lamb) which has hummus and tabbouli on it. They added pickles for me and a bit of garlic sauce which is a must, a bit messyish but I was eating at home anywho. Total was under 5 bucks and it filled me up nicely. I thought the combo of flavors was very nice and the amount super generous. Not too far a drive and therefore handy. I'm going to make a blanket statement. Yelp does not work in Detroit. The foodies have nothing to compare against and it's not their fault. So if locals rate a place, I would dock it 1-2 stars. I read a few mixed reviews about Beirut so decided to give it a try. The Fattouch salad was great - very fresh greens but the fried pita chips were mixed. That was unexpected and not very good so I picked those out. I also got a side of lamb/chicken to top the salad and a side of hummus. All in all a great value because you get lots of food for the price but not all was worthy. Call me spoiled but the food in other more densely populated cities are good and it has to be given the competition out there. read more

I thought that the food was really good. The sandwiches were much larger than the usual schwarma. There was a lot of sauce inside, which was kinda nice too. The hummus was great, as was the bread. The service was a little lacking. She wasn't exactly the most friendly person I've ever met - but I have been on a Caribbean island where service is what one would call a joke. So, she was better than that, but walked past us w/o saying something like, "I'll be right with you". Meanwhile, there was only one other person in the restaurant - so she had the time. We thought the food was so good that we decided to order more for dinner that night. We ordered a large hummus, and when we got home realized that we got the same amount of bread that we had when we ordered the small version in the restaurant. I really hate it when restaurants do that kind of stuff. We are an hour away from the restaurant - it's not like I can go back and get more. Even if it were only 5 min away, it still would have been annoying. I just wish that people with restaurants would think, "how would I want this if I took it home?" - would make everyone a lot happier. So now I've got a TON of hummus, with no bread. Hmmm... Overall, this place had excellent food, average service, and weak take-out packaging. I'd definitely eat there again, just be a little careful about take-out and service expectations. read more

I have to say ... I've had my share of Mediterranean food in my day, but this place took the trophy. This place is located in the Hotel District next to the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and I looked on Yelp for dinner. I thought to myself, '[R]eally? Lebanese Food in the middle of American restaurants? Oh, why not?" From the outside, the menu was posted and I took a deep look at it ... 'chicken shawarma.' This place can't be as good as what's on Devon Avenue in Chicago. As I looked inside - there were a couple of patrons chowing down on 'Beirut Platter for 2' consisting of '1 Shish Kabob, 1 Shish Tawook, 2 Shish Kafta, 2 Fried KIbbee, 2 Falafel, and 2 Grape Leaves (with some other sides).' The waitress (I think one of the owners) presented the plate to two people who were about to eat it and their eyes were in shock, like mine, with the spread before them. I wanted to go over there and devour it with them. :) Nevertheless, I ordered: Sojouk (sautéed spicy sausage links with tomatoes, cilantro, garlic, & lemon juice), falafel, and chicken shawarma. I just have to say, the pictures that I took have no justice, but the flavors were amazing! The sojouk's flavors: the stewed tomatoes and the Mediterranean spices really took me back to my Navy days when I visited the Middle East. The hostesses were very kind to my voracious appetite and couldn't eat everything that was lain before me, but I ate it. They were very sweet and gave me some homemade baklava to snack on while I continue my work travels this week. I've had a lot of Mediterranean food but this place has the best hummus I have ever tasted. I ordered the half lamb, half chicken with hummus dish. I thought that the lamb and chicken were a little on the dry side. However, the hummus helped to give the dish justice. Went here for the first time (not the last) with my boyfriend when we arrived in MI from CA. A sweet young child/girl brought us waters while we waited for our server. There was pita on the table so my boyfriend dove in but when our server came over, she replaced it with new bags of pita- perhaps it was there from the last customers? Beirut Restaurant gets a solid 4-star rating. I'm a big fan of their 'super kofta' sandwhich, which features a choice of lamb, beef, or chicken, hummus, and tabbouli. The shawarma needs a bit of work, as the flavor tends to be a bit too acidic. Hummus and tabboili very fresh tasting. Fresh juice bar is nice-my favorite is the apple/carrot blend. Reasonable prices-for around $12 you can get two sandwiches and a fresh glass of juice. Service quick and friendly. read more

It's like a middle eastern quesadilla. Beirut serves it with thick French fries, and a couple of packets of quartered pita breads. It's a lot of food. Plenty for lunch the next day. It was good, maybe a bit heavy. But unique and memorable. It was my 3rd time to this family owned restaurant in the vicinity of Detroit Metro airport, which is a relative wasteland for the traveler seeking a selection of fine dining. But an authentic, family-run, ethnic eatery is to be treasured in our age of bland, predictable chains or the faux authtenticiy of PF Changs, Taco Bells, etc. A lot has been said about their service, or lack thereof. If you are looking for a "Hi, my name is Brittany and I will be your server tonight," you will be out of luck at Beirut. It's more like the "Cheeseburger, cheeseburger" style of service. Get over it. Quality food + Airport aren't words that generally go in the same sentence. DTW is no different. It's got the typical McDonalds & Bob Evans nearby but if you're not feeling American's commercialized food, Beirut Restaurant could be the alternative you're looking for. It's just 3 MILES AWAY FROM THE AIRPORT & it's located in a small plaza with a pizza parlor, liquor store, Subway and Chinese fast food. The place is on the small side & you can dine-in (booths and tables) or take-out It's super cute with murals on both walls of scenic paintings of Lebanon. The menu is pretty typical for middle-eastern restaurants but one thing stood out to me: SEAFOOD SHAWARMAS!!! In similar restaurants, you have your choice of varietal meats and grape leaves or falafel for vegetarians but I've never seen salmon or shrimp as an option. I decided to go with the salmon wrap (to-go) and as I'm waiting for my food, I can't help but notice the floor could use a run-around with the broom & mop. Oh well. A little food on the floor never hurt anyone (or did it?). I also got a smoothie which tasted as I expected. I waited until I got home to eat my salmon wrap and cut it in half once I saw how gigantic it was. I also gave it a wipe down because it was smothered in WAY too much garlic butter (& I love garlic butter but your food is swimming, you've gone too far). I opened up the wrap to see what was inside and had to do some searching for the salmon. They should have called it a 'rice shawarma' because that's basically what it was. Rice & garlic butter. In the end, I did find a few small slivers of salmon and if I pieced them all together, I may have gotten a 1 inch x 1 inch piece but that's being generous. It's like the seafood was an afterthought. Or maybe it was on the same cutting board as another dish and accidentally got thrown in with the rice. I don't know but it was so greasy that I ended up just throwing it out. This place is great! They were so friendly, We had the chicken kebab, lentil soup, and as appetizers, the Beirut platter and the spinach pie. The food was amazing, and the servings were so generous. We live in Atlanta, but would definitely come back as often as we can. They gave us a free rice pudding, for the baby . In the beginning it was fairly empty, but near the end of our meal, it was packed with what seemed like regular patrons. Mo and Emna served us and they were exceptionally attentive! Based on my initial experience, quite good indeed. It's not fancy, but the food is quite good, it's clean, and service is fine. I started out with a bowl of their lamb vegetable soup, which made me happy, even if it was a bit of a smallish serving for $3.99. It's just not a very big bowl, for being a bowl. That being said, it's a nice, hearty soup, with decent lamb, and they do get this part *absolutely* right: their soups are served *BLAZING* hot. I mean that in the absolute best possible way. That makes every spoonful of soup that much better. I'd get it again. I followed up with the chicken tawook sandwich, adding onions. They forgot to put them on when they first served it, but before I could even discover it for myself, my server was coming back over and apologizing for serving it up without the asked-for onions, and they took it back and made it right. When it returned, pretty good, though not life-changing, sandwich. Nice char on the exterior pita, the chicken was pretty good, though some of it (not all) was a bit dry, and I enjoyed it. $4.99 and worth it. At this point, I was basically sated for under $10, and I had arrived very hungry. However, one of my baselines for Middle Eastern places is crushed lentil soup, and I asked if I could try a tiny sample of this soup. I should mention that all of their soups are made in-house. You can tell: this soup is fantastic. Once again, blazingly hot like the lamb vegetable, but with obvious different taste like crushed lentil should have. I can promise that I'll be returning for this soup for certain; it really is a thing of beauty, both to the eye and the mouth. It was very nicely balanced, spiced, and had a terrific texture. I honestly ate the most of it with a fork, not a spoon. Perhaps the best thing I had there tonight, but that's not a knock to the other items...it just says a heck of a lot about this soup. The place itself could use some updating and touches of paint and such. Still clean, but a bit run-down. Prices were moderate, and the servers/workers were very engaging folks making people feel welcome. I tipped well. It's nice to know that this place is right by the airport, giving me a good, healthier choice amongst the fast food that's prolific around the area. Food review: We loved the chicken shwarma...the chicken was very tender The crushed lentil soup was delicious. The almond rice was amazing, but was quite oily. Bread comes out with every order. Would be nice if they also brought out garlic sauce with the bread. The vegetarian grape leaves were among the better ones I've had. Asked for some garlic sauce with it and that was great. The shrimp scampi dish is more like a stew and has a lot of flavor. However, I could literally taste the butter. We had family flying in from all over the country for a wedding in Michigan. We opted to stop here, by the airport, to get some lunch before heading to our hotels. Their food and service was absolutely top-notch all the way. Portions were huge, food was freshly made, and everything was melt in your mouth delicious. The woman who waited our table had a great personality, was prompt with our service, and had a fun sense of humor.
