    Bifana Sandwich
    Simon C.

This cafe is located right next to Rossio train station, so if you are catching a morning commute like us going to Sintra castle to beat the crowd, it's a convenient place to grab something for breakfast. We didn't have much chance to try a lot of Bifana during this trip so decided to get one here. While it looks pretty legit, I felt like the pork could have added a bit more taste. The bun was also a bit too dry so as the pork - making the whole eating experience not the greatest. So if you are in a rush, this place is an okay place to grab breakfast - just don't expect anything fancy.

    Croquettes and bifana.

I love the location of this place which is right by the Lisbon train station. They have outdoor seating, the staff are courteous and friendly. They serve traditional Portuguese foods, we tried the bifanas which is a pork steak sandwich, cod fish croquettes and a simple garden salad, with a beer. Local people come here to buy their bifanas too! Food is basic but delicious and we paid less than €20 overall.

This is a great spot for a traditional fare. It is across from the beautiful Rossio train station. No glitz and glamour here but the food hits the mark. I recommend a cold octopus salad.

I loved it! Really nice alternative to a touristic restaurant! Really local in the city center of lisbone !

    Octopus rice

Very authentic Portuguese restaurant. Food is great, I highly recommend the Bifana (beef sandwich) as well as the Octopus Rice (Arroz de Polvo) You'll probably have to share a table but this makes the experience even more authentic.

We stayed at the Hotel Avenida Palace, which is across from the Beira Gare. We ate two late evening meals here and loved them both. The setting is casual and reasonably priced. Lots of locals, including a cycling club, eat here. Service is excellent and friendly. You must try the bifana (pork sandwich) and octopus salad and spicy meat Salgado. The Caldo verde (cabbage soup) is also delicious. We had lovely wine and beer. Such a wonderful local "diner" experience.

Every time I am in Lisbon I make it a point to stop here for lunch. The bifanas are heavenly! I could eat two one after the other. They are so good. The staff is so attentive as well. Don't bother sitting down, just take a stop at the counter, order your bifana and enjoy! The "salgados" are very good as well. I usually have 1 bifana with mustard and two croquetes with a freshly squeezed orange juice. Delicious! I cannot wait to be back!

We came here for lunch when we first arrived in Lisbon -- a very fast-paced spot where people were in and out very quickly! I ordered the cod sandwich and Mike ordered their octopus salad. My cod sandwich was okay -- a bit soggy for my taste but Mike's octopus salad was so delicious y'all. The octopus was cooked perfectly and mixed with citrus and herbs -- such a refreshing dish on a hot and humid day! Definitely a must in Lisbon!

Our server was very friendly. We ordered the rice pot with monkfish and shrimp which was very delicious! It was exactly what I was craving when wanting some good seafood! My boyfriend ordered sausage with an egg and fries. The fries were ok- but we have yet to experience really good fries on our trip (compared to American). The sausage was very good. This was one of the best seafood meals I have had in Lisbon!

Tasty but food handling is seriously questionable
    Annie H.

They are really fast and efficient serving you here especially if you eat at the counter. The bifana (pork) sandwiches are decent but I have a problem with the food handling. One person does all the cooking and making the sandwiches and plating. So he wears gloves which I'm fine with but he uses the same gloves to handle RAW meat and to make your sandwiches. And if you order croquettes he uses the same gloves to grab them and put them on a plate or in a box. That really grosses me out. Until they implement proper food handling measures I would steer clear.

Pretty good brunch place next to the train station. Tried the bifanas and it was sooo satisfying...almost had to get a glass of wine to wash it down.

    Love the good vibes here!

This is my first time visiting Lisbon and I've been to this little restaurant three times already, in four days (given the fact there are so many good restaurants to try here)! Food is delicious, lots of locals eating in this restaurant, especially during lunch time, you will see many men standing at the bar eating pork sandwich. I love the chill / casual / neighborhood vibes here. Staff is really friendly too. I had the codfish & shrimp rice, the pork bun, the octopus salad, and the Portuguese style sausage, loved them all.

    Really delicious pork

Best Bifana. For true experience order and eat it at the bar and watch the servers in action. Caldo Verde is also good.

The codfish dumpling fusion was a pleasant surprise, creamy on the inside and a nice chewy gyoza wrapper. The octopus rice was good too. A decent amount of octopus with rice in a smoked bell pepper sauce. I was disappointed by the seafood pasta soup though. I liked the mussels, but the shrimp and the clams weren't the freshest. The clams were a little mushy. It had a nice seafood stock flavor, but definitely could have used more salt and seasoning. We had mixed service from one of the female servers.

We started with a glass of wine and a specialty cocktail with gin and cherry liqueur as a base. Perfect balance of herbal and tart and sweet. We each ordered a glass of 20 year port to celebrate my birthday and the staff overheard and brought a complimentary rich chocolate dessert. Very enjoyable meal all the way around.

It's rotisserie chicken doused with a spicy hot sauce so what's not to like? I knew it was a Portuguese-originated dish, so I looked for a place famous for it. Here on a Sunday evening, there was quite a queue extending up the cobblestone alley, so I realized this must be the place. Although it was at least thirty people deep, it didn't take more than twenty minutes for Jamie W and me to secure a table upstairs. It was a homestyle dining room set-up that hovered between cozy and crowded depending on the fluctuating volume level. Interestingly all the servers were male, and while ours was the most junior, he consciously followed the behavior of his veteran brethren. There was no question about our main course, the 13,5€ Frango Assado No Espeto (Roast Chicken on the Spit) (Photo 7). It was tender and succulent enough albeit a bit under seasoned, all the more reason to pour a liberal dose of the piri piri sauce (Photo 8). Our sides were simple but shareable, the 3,2€ Batata Fritta (French Fries) (Photo 9) and the 4,3€ Salada Mista (Mixed Salad) (Photo 10). Both were fine, though we really wanted to try their Cream Spinach. They were already out of it in the kitchen. We were quite satisfied nonetheless, and their service pretty much worked like clockwork. Jamie and I agreed we'd definitely come back if the passion for poultry strikes us on a return trip to Lisbon. In the meanwhile, I'll just do a run to Costco, buy a rotisserie chicken, and dream of Portugal. A small line of one or two groups at a time formed throughout the night. We were seated outside and there was a street performer with an acoustic guitar - def added some great vibes to the night. It was a chilly December night but the heater provided *just enough* warmth. We ordered the codfish cakes which were alright - nothing too special. Since it was a little cold out, I also ordered the chicken broth. It was bland, but good in its own way. There was some rice and chicken bits in it that tasted really good. The rotisserie chicken that they are known for was EXTREMELY salty. We were a group of 6 and ordered 2.5 rotisserie chicken (so 5 pieces) but this was actually way too much. It's a little better (but still salty) if you don't eat the skin, but that's the best part given how crispy it was! I tried to drown out the saltiness by using the piri piri sauce and it helped a little bit... but biting into the chicken meant biting into the undissolved salt bits. Given how salty it was, we could not finish it at all and left behind 3 pieces. Service itself was meh. They made sure to inform us that the tip was not included in the bill.

I aspire, as an American, to learn from and look up to other cultures. I feel very honored to have dined in a restaurant managed by him on our trip to Portugal. I'm going to recommend to our travel coordinator to add this restaurant to the Google map recommendations list because more people need to go to this place - they need more tables, more space, because I'm convinced this is such a hidden gem that should be exposed to the masses to enjoy! We visited several wineries and this restaurant had the best wine - bar none! The fish, a fish I hadn't tried before, was deliciously seasoned, falls apart with the fork, the creamy rice was just divine. I normally will never eat little cherry/grape tomatoes - ever - but the perfect bite of fish, creamy rice, and a tomato was... perfection. The menu is deeply curated; flavors - textures - wines that make sense. You can tell Frederico what you normally like and he 100% knows what wines he has that you will love. The tomato, orange, ham, salad, was absolutely balanced and delicious. I'm so grateful that our first trip to Portugal we got to meet Frederico and dine with these wonderful people who love food and wine as much as us. I'll never forget it as long as I live.
