First of all, I have to give major props to the staff. We went on the day of the eclipse and got what I feel firmly was the last spot at 4:30 PM. You could tell they were already wiped but they were providing excellent service with smiles. The place has a very old world vibe, with dark wood and curtained booths. I dig it. They also allow dogs which is how we found ourselves there in the first place. Appreciate their pet friendly policy! I love that you can order their draft beers in 5 oz options and they have a flight of local beer. Sadly the food is pretty basic and only half well executed. My shrimp skewers and my daughters fish and chips turned out great but both my husbands beef sandwich and my other daughters burger came out with soggy buns from sitting on them too long in the back. However I'm taking into account the opinion of the family that we came to visit who absolutely adore this place. I think a lot of the soggy buns can be blamed on eclipse days exhaustion. read more

When I start this review by saying "we arrived in town late on a Sunday," you might infer that I'm implying this was our only dining & drinking option at the time. McDonald's and dominos pizza aside, you'd be correct. Geneva is a lovely town on the northern end of Seneca lake. Watkins glen is on the southern end. Geneva's economy appears based on colleges and tourism, plus wineries. Given it's thanksgiving week, and this region is not known for warm weather in November, many restaurants close early (7-8 pm) or aren't open Sunday/Monday. Let me tell ya: Beef & Brew turned out to be an oasis in the food desert! We walked in and were greeted by a friendly patron at the bar. He eventually made it known he wasn't an employee. Could've fooled me as he sounded quite "happy." We were seated near a lovely gas fireplace and good-sized model ship. The vibe is dark, woody, nautical. I liked it. Kevin came out and took our drink orders. The menu for drinks is HUGE. Tons of beer options of many categories: Normal lager (they had a couple drafts in the $2-4 range), IPA (because...everyone always has a million IPA's), stout, porter, non-alcoholic and low alcohol, etc. etc. Cider selections are good too if you're a celiac as my boo Nikki is. We didn't peruse the wine and spirits menu but they're definitely available. More on that in a minute. We both knew what we wanted coming in: beef on weck. It's a specialty from Buffalo which we'd never tried. We were very pleasantly surprised to find it on a menu this far east! They had gluten free rolls for a $2 up charge. I've definitely seen worse, $2 is really no worse than chick fil a. I ordered a 45 fathoms porter on draft, $6 for a 16 oz pour. SHHH, it would've cost me a couple more $ in NJ. The beer review places give it 92/100 and it earns every point of that! Highly recommend if you enjoy a dark beer with a reasonable 5.6% ABV. Nikki got a cider on draft that was good. She's asleep or else I'd ask her more about it. The cuisine was presented to us and it did not disappoint! The beef was juicy and warm, although not quite as rare as I like. To be fair, they advised it is typically medium rare. The amount of meat was nice. I cut my sandwich in half for dipping in the au jus and the horseradish spread. It really doesn't "need" either of those condiments as the flavor of the beef goes perfect with the salted caraway seeded roll. My side of fries were good. They're of the thicker steak fry variety. With some black pepper, dipping them in ketchup or horseradish was delectable. Nikki loved her mashed potatoes. If guy fieri ever put this in one of his eateries, he'd call it "GUY'S BANGIN BEEF" or something, and it would be worthy of such hyperbole. We ended the evening with a shot of their well vodka, which Kevin advised "really wasn't that bad." He was right - it was pretty good. They provided lemon and lime wedges on the side of the large shot glasses. I think this may have been a 2 oz pour? Bravo! Service was good. Kevin ensured the food was good, our drinks were full and even provided a new ketchup bottle. The star of the show wasn't the vodka shots, it was definitely the food. On our 4th visit we were seated outside in what I would decribe as a beer garden. Now that we know it is here, we will always request to sit here. It was beautifully decorated and it made it easy to converse with no loud music or packed dining room. There were several other diners outside as well, but it felt intimate and relaxing, like visiting friends in their back patio. Great stuff! Would love to see this open during the winter. Came in today for my wife's birthday. We've been before and never had an issue, and didn't really have an issue today, but more of a let down. All the main dishes we got were great. 3 of us ordered the pot roast sandwich, and one the Cavatappi Mac and cheese. Again, food was great. But my issue is this. When we first sat, we mentioned it was my wife's birthday and the waitress said happy birthday. At the end of the dinner, the waitress asked my wife if she'd like a dessert to go. We opted for carrot cake and she brought it out and even included a candle for us for her birthday. But she never mentioned that she was charging us the $8 for the "slice" of cake. We all thought it was one of those free dessert for your birthday types of things. Nope. We already had dessert plans for after dinner, so we didn't need the cake, but if it was free then why not? Also, the size of the slice was so small. My wallet for scale which is a normal size mens wallet. I guess it's more the fact that she slid this abysmal looking slice into our bill for an extra 8 bucks. If it was a decent sized slice, I wouldn't feel so bad. It's like it was $4 for the cake and $4 for the candle. Just left a sour taste in our mouth on the way of an otherwise pleasant dinner. We were in need of some lunch on our drive home after a night away in the Finger Lakes. It happened to be Father's Day so we didn't want to get caught in a big crowd or have to wait. Delicious, tender and flavorful beef on a soft yet crisp exterior kimmelweck. The apple sauce was fresh, not too sweet and had the right amount of cinnamon. Shall I pivot to a travelogue about Geneva, now up to #28 on my all-time favorites list? There's just the right mix of quaintness and industrial edginess, and a grand lakefront steps from downtown. In my second Beef & Brew trip, the beef on weck remained just as perfect, as did the gravy, the horseradish sauce and the applesauce. And though I switched to takeout, the service was still superb. Excellent choice for beer drinkers and beef eaters. The other members of my group LOVED the beer tastings. Some of them tasted multiple rounds of beer and cider. The other members of my group loved the food, as well. They are all meat eaters. The name of the restaurant is Beef and Brew for a reason. I enjoyed the interesting decor. and being seated in the interesting booth with the curtain. The menu does make an effort to have multiple vegetarian offerings, but none of them excited me. I settled for the Beyond Burger which reminds me so much of a beef burger that I don't look forward to it. I much prefer home made black bean or veggie burgers. We had a solid first experience at Beef & Brew in those crazy, drowsy, confused days between Xmas and the New Year, when you are still trying to digest the mountains of cookies and sleep off the one-too-many tipples... We had been looking for a centrally-located and still-open-for-in-house-dining place to meet with friends, all of whom have been staying isolated just so we could get together and exchange gifts, and we found Beef & Brew in Geneva. We arrived just as they opened, and were seated in the bigger (and completely empty) dining room right next to the roaring fireplace. Our server was appropriately masked, friendly, bubbly, helpful and efficient. She apprised us of specials on tap, and left menus for us to review. There were 4 of us in total, and we actually skipped the drinks and just had waters and iced teas....but the real story here is the food: - two people started with bowls of the soup of the day, which I believe was like a cheddar and beer soup. There was not much talking while they consumed their bowls, so I am pretty sure the soup was delicious...but I have no other details... For entrees: - one person got the hickory smoked brisket salad - the portion was huge, easily enough for 2 people to share if each were eating it as a meal, or for 4 people to share if you just wanted a side salad. There were several large pieces of perfectly cooked brisket on top of a bed of mixed spring greens, with grilled veggies and a chimichurri sauce - it looked beautiful, and my friend thought it was a good low-carb option. - one person got the beef and stilton pie, which was essentially a bowl full of stewed beef (and I mean FULL) with melted stilton cheese throughout, and a piece of puffed pastry on top to make the 'pie'. It didn't look like a very large portion, but it was really rich and satisfying, and the puff pastry crust was just enough carb to add depth and texture. He would definitely get this again. - one person got the beef and bleu sandwich, which was also full of meat and a good size portion, served with steak fries. The fries were also really good, though our friend was not a fan (he prefers shoe-string fries), so the rest of us ate the fries instead! - and lastly, I had....CHICKEN! I know, what was I thinking at a place with 'beef' in the name, but the chicken pot pie was calling my name, especially after numerous days of overeating rich meat dishes at home. And I was not disappointed in the least. The chicken pot pie was full of big chunks of chicken, plus some veggies, and a relatively light though flavorful gravy, topped with a piece of puff pastry. I ate every bite and was not too full. I would definitely get this again. Now, the experience we had was made even better by the lack of other diners, which allowed us to hear each other talk, and to consume our food unmasked without feeling too anxious...even though we know this has to be agonizingly tough on the restaurant not being filled to capacity. That said, as long as they continue to be able to serve food inside, I would definitely recommend heading out there for a meal. It's worth the 45 min drive from Rochester just to be waited on and have access to foods we don't normally cook ourselves, especially since they have such a great menu and great execution. Found this little gem on the trip back from visiting a state park. Heading into Geneva and I asked hubby to check Yelp for a good lunch spot. This was one of the top rated places and it looked exactly like the type of place we would both love. And we did. We were greeted and taken to our seats quickly, even though they were very busy. We started with the fried calamari appetizer; then I went with a burger and my better half went with beef on weck. Everything was very tasty and we were very happy. The Calamari was crispy and seasoned well, and the sauces both complemented it perfectly. My burger was juicy and not overcooked, and hubby raved about the roast beef. If you're in the area I would highly recommend stopping in for a bite (or two). read more

I have now been to this restaurant 3x since the summer and have not been disappointed. They have a covered deck that there are quite a few tables at, and they even keep it heated when the weather turns chilly. We were actually able to bring our pups with us and sit on the deck. The inside is a nice mix of restaurant and bar and not too loud. And speaking of the bar they have about 50 beers on tap, which include some local choices. They do prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays and let me tell you it's the biggest piece of prime rib I've ever had and so delicious, but better to come on Friday as they could run out for Saturday. The decor of Beef & Brew is beautiful and artsy and dine-in is currently available with limited capacity. The staff was friendly and served everything quickly. We did a take out order via phone and food was ready in 20 minutes. We had their signature Beef & Brew Stew and seasonal seafood special fried scallops (10 pieces) with a reasonable price of $35 and the portion was really great. The fried scallops was decent and fresh but not really special. Their beef stew was the best beef stew I have ever had in NY so far, it was braised flavorful, super tender and juicy. I'm so pleased that I can finally say "straight, no chaser" to describe a restaurant. It's a compliment, as this is the perfect example of a standard-style restaurant that has managed to well-occupy exactly the area they claim. Perhaps they could call themselves "Beef, Brew, & Cheese", as that's exactly what they did right. It's a style of restaurant that seems hard to find anymore, a sort of old-school beef pub eatery, designed to appeal to English sailors on leave. That theme is repeated everywhere. There are dozens of beers on tap, in several styles and sizes. There is seafarer decor everywhere. The seating is designed to feel comfortable and cozy with that sagging swank of leather and dark-toned wood at tables, classic bar, or secluded booth, all showing the wear of perhaps decades of love. And the menu is wall-to-wall beef, and sometimes cheese. We ordered the beef'n'stilton pie, the beer cheese soup, and the chimichurri brisket sandwich. I won't say that these were sophisticated or high-class. Instead, just well-executed in exactly the spot they needed to be. The pie was essentially pot roast soup with crumbles of stilton, topped with a square of puff pastry. It was a perfect flavor combo! The brisket was perfectly smoked and slow-roasted. The beer cheese soup was a mountain of cheese. I could take points away for being simple, but I won't because it wasn't claimed to be complicated and gourmet. And it was simply very tasty. No dessert. It's just not in their wheelhouse, so they don't do it. It doesn't match the theme. It's a joy to find one of these places still around; for the most part they've all died off. This place was wonderful! Funny enough we found it by mistake but I'm glad we did. The ambiance is cute, it's rustic and plesant, not too loud and easy to talk. The main dining area is smaller and fairly intimate, wonderful for a small gathering! The service was wonderful here. Our waiter was polite and attentive. He was just the right amount of social, and super pleasant throughout the meal. He made a point to take dishes only when people were done, and always asked unlike some places I've been. We head a great dinner at this classic looking pub. The beer cheese soup is good - but I couldn't actually tell it ha beer in it, and the consistency was odd. I ate the whole cup, however. We had a reservation and after a 30 min wait at our table with not even a drink order placed, we walked out. Over heard that they were short staffed. Then I switched beers and guess what they were out of the blue moon, so I went with another local beer which was good. I had a pot pie which was hot and spicy. I loved it. I never order a pot pie. We stopped here for lunch on our way to Niagara Falls, on a Monday around 11:30. The restaurant didn't have many people and they accommodated us easily. We sat on the patio outside. It's enclosed in ivy and had a nice breeze. It was decorated with lights and had a nice feel. For the drinks: they have a ton of beers, including a nice variety of ciders. I don't know if they have flights, but they do offer drafts in 5, 10, 16 (and more) ounces. We got two ciders in 5 oz glasses which was nice for a quick drink. My husband had dry cider and I had a sweet, local one. Both were super tasty. For the food: I had one of their brisket sandwiches with coleslaw on a GF bun. The food was good. I added horseradish to the coleslaw which made it even tastier. My husband had the shepherd's pie and ate it all up. Our waitress was pleasant and the bathrooms were clean.
