I'll be the first to admit that after many years of traveling for consulting work, hotel restaurants are not my favorite. With that said, Beatrix is one of the better (albeit casual) restaurants I've been to in a hotel. I've stopped by for brunch, lunch, and now dinner - I will have to visit again for their 8 pm "clear the case" deal sometime. On a Friday night, it was bustling - lots of families. Our party of 5 did have a reservation, otherwise it may have been a little wait for a table. To start, I tried one of their mocktails called Say Less, which was very good but a little overpriced. For dinner, I got the mushroom quinoa burger, which was tasty just slightly dry. I would pass on the fries next time and opt for a different side. Overall, service was pretty good and everything came out in a reasonable time. I generally enjoy that Beatrix is very versatile and has good variety on their menus including healthier choices. read more

Not the biggest fan of Caesar salads to be totally honest, but this was actually amazing. Not the biggest critic when it comes to salads, but I've had some great salads in my day. For ordering an actual Caesar salad, I loved the flavor here. Lemony, tangy, I added a little salt and pepper that made it delicious. Adding the chicken was a good choice, and our waiter brought our food almost right after we ordered it. The worst part about this location as of writing this review is the hostess pictured, she needs some serious rework in proper hospitality and hostess training. Very rude, not accommodating, holding tables for no reason on a waiting list of 11+ parties while 1/3 of the indoor area of the restaurant is seemingly closed with no explanation, at least three tables indoors were available at the time of speaking to her, and another five tables at least available outside. Didn't even bother asking if we preferred inside or outside seating, just a repeated response about the wait being about 45 minutes. How come another host showed up (Indian ethnicity, I hope I'm correct and I don't offend him here) and he immediately took care of all 12 parties in a row that were on this hostess' waiting list? Also, hostess, don't fight over math when someone tells you they are a party of two adults with a stroller, that doesn't mean three, it means if you process what you're being told correctly, that you need to place the party at a table where a stroller needs to be parked next to the table and not blocking pedestrian traffic - it doesn't mean it's an opportunity to argue with guests about "so that means three people not two people for your waitlist number." If this hostess thinks she works at some high-class Beverly Hills, California restaurant, then she should look at a map and go work where she thinks she belongs. Actually, they probably wouldn't hire her over there because she has other qualities that don't fit most likely. It was absolutely frustrating to deal with this hostess and as out-of-town tourists visiting this location for the first time, she's already the reason we probably won't come back. People like her, on first contact with a guest, are the easy way to your restaurant losing repeat customers quickly. Just get rid of her, seriously. There is no need in any restaurant to have people waiting for no reason, it does nothing - the idea of having people wait outside for people passing by to think "oh look at the wait there it must be worth it" is a silly idea, it doesn't work. It just means people will see the wait outside and keep walking, and you won't have first time nor repeat customers anyway if they always see the same scene going on. TLDR: food is usually great but service can be a hit or miss Beatrix has become such a classic Chicago staple for when you don't know what you want to eat or when you just want a quick bite for lunch. Need something to grab on the go with your coffee? Beatrix's coffeeshop & restaurant offers pastries and sweet treats, too. Honestly, River North just doesn't have a lot in terms of casual dining that isn't Portillo's or McDonald's but isn't RPM-Fancy, so Beatrix is just the perfect go-to for that reason. And they have a lot of healthy options (and also non-healthy options!) for those who are trying to eat better before their upcoming annual physical--obviously, I'm not talking about myself. Obviously. The vibe is trendy-casual and totally adorable. People love this place for their brunch, but I think lunch and dinner items are the best. Their salads and mains are almost always spot on. The only thing I've had that was just NOT GREAT was the Wild Mushroom Teriyaki Bowl. It was super salty and sour, but I didn't send it back because we had a pretty inattentive waiter, and it took forever to get our food in the first place. Don't get me wrong, the many other times I've been here, I've had excellent service and everything else I've had here like the Straight "A" salad, Baja Chopped Salad, Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice, Korean Chicken Meatballs, Whipped Feta, Hot Honey Brussels Sprouts, Slow Cooked Short Rib were ALL tasty! Great brunch spot! They have a really good variety of coffee/espresso drinks as well as a lengthy brunch menu that was super reasonably priced. I was going to between the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich and the ham and cheese croissant. I went with the croissant and am so glad I did. It wasn't just a simple sandwich as I expected but a croissant loaded with ham and cheese inside as well as topped with additional cheese. It was really, really good, as was the cinnamon sugar latte l, and the croissant even came with a little arugula salad. I'm not usually an arugula person but had a really good flavor and littler peppers or something in it that it was really a true salad. This is one of my go to restaurants when I'm in Chicago. As a solo diner, the bar area is very welcoming and the bartenders are terrific. Several times I've ordered the green chicken enchiladas and they never disappoint. . I accompanied my dinner with a mango gin and tonic and it is one of the best drinks I've had this summer. Stopped here for brunch with 2 friends when we were visiting Chicago. We arrived at 11 and were informed that the kitchen closes between 11-11:30 so we'd have to wait a bit. We considered heading somewhere else but by then it was close to 11:30 anyway so we decided to grab coffee and wait. At the coffee bar I tried the banana bread cold brew. I liked it but it had more of a straight banana flavor than banana bread. At the restaurant, we tried these items from the lunch menu: - Kennebec fries - these were delicious. Crispy, salted well, and the lemons/chilis complemented them perfectly. - Korean chicken meatballs - also delicious. They were moist and the caramel gochujang sauce was incredible. - Turkey smashburger - I wanted to try this because turkey burgers are often too dry and dense, and a smashburger version sounded like it would solve those issues, which it did. The turkey patties were moist and flavorful, which is something I never thought I'd say about a turkey burger. The portion size was huge so unfortunately I was only able to eat half before I got full, but I enjoyed every bite. Service was great at both the coffee bar and the restaurant, and I really liked the combination of both spaces. One of my friends actually spent the day working in the coffee shop seating area after our meal, and she really enjoyed it. Highly highly recommend this place if you're looking for good fusion food, especially if you don't eat red meat like myself or are vegetarian. I rarely see so many entrees I can eat, especially at places with small menus like this, so that was really awesome. And it also makes a great WFH space. read more

Food came out lukewarm and inedible after over a 2 hour wait, and no food was being served to anyone. I came with my family of 4 to this restaurant. It was an about 12pm when we got there so it was the end of the morning rush as they flipped tables. It took almost an hour to get seated which was not the time estimate given to us. We chose this place because it was the closest restaurant with burgers since a recent hernia surgery left a party member really wanting protein since eating much can be hard for a month or two after the surgery. BIG mistake to not walk the extra time to shake shack. We were sat by the kitchen and I was able to see in: dozens of people working in the kitchen running around. Washing dishes, transporting ice, so many staff in the back, and yet waiters coming out were only carrying napkins and silverware like the WHOLE time. It was like no food was being cooked. In the 30 minutes of being seated I watched ONE meal come out. I watched 2 other tables get frustrated too and leave after only ordering simple drinks. When the food came out over an hour of being seated, they forgot our fries and gave us lukewarm over night oats that tasted salty and bitter. It was supposed to be maple. The waitress was nice and reasonable and took it off our tab. I think she was the only person waiting on our particular room. She was fine no complaints it's not her fault the other half of the working establishment is paralyzed. It was almost three hours of sitting waiting and we ordered and got the tab as soon as we possibly could. So if you come here, expect sub par food and 3 hours of nothingness. read more

First time. Super crowded. Reservations are mandatory. This restaurant is within/next to a hotel. Visually appealing interior decorations that create a comfy "home" vibe. Friendly staff. First, the appetizers and burgers were cheaper for happy hour. We started with the fries and guac apps. We were both surprised at how much guac there was. I didn't try any but my friend enjoyed it. The fries were excellent. Served with sliced red hot peppers, some chili flakes, crispy sweet lemon slices, and aoili. The hot peppers were easy to avoid and the chili flakes were just the right amount of heat to add some interest to the fries without feeling spicy to me. I had dinner plans elsewhere which fell through. When we realized that we had extra time, my friend recommended the mushroom and quinoa burger. I hadn't tried a veggie burger in years because too many seem to be primarily rice or some other starch. These burgers were definitely the best vegetarian burgers I've had. Crispy with a highly satisfying charred crunch. The flavor of the mushrooms came through in a lovely umami way, but none of the sogginess of other mushroom burgers because the crisped quinoa provided the perfect texture. Pairing well with the mushrooms, the Swiss cheese augmented the flavors and added a creamy mouthfeel to the burger. Fries for the burgers didn't have any the fancy additions to the appetizer, but came with more aioli and ketchup. Four hours flew by in a heartbeat between old friends catching up, cozy atmosphere, comfy seats, a solid buzz, and too notch food. Can't wait to return!! read more

We stopped in on a Friday around 530pm after a movie at the AMC close by. We didn't know there was happy hour until 6 so we got kinda lucky. They have great deals on the happy hour menu! We started with the whipped feta and the Korean chicken meatballs. The meatballs were incredibly juicy and tender and the sauce was absolutely delicious (I used the leftover sauce with my fries from my meal--yumm). The feta was pretty good, but we didn't enjoy the seedy crackers it was served with. The texture makes sense in theory, but we didn't love it. For our meals my friend got the enchiladas and said they were very tasty. I had the burger and beverage from the happy hour menu ($15 for a house marg and the tavern burger--great value). The burger was great, but I do wish there was some sort of sauce. The fries were amazing. The house marg was just alright, but you can't beat the deal. The habanero pineapple marg was great! For appetizers, I tried the whipped feta and buffalo chicken meatballs. The meatballs came with 6 pieces and had tons of flavor. The mix of buffalo sauce and ranch was tasty with the meatballs. The whipped feta was fine as well. For main courses, I ordered the prime burger. It was kind of dry and did not have too much flavor, but the fries were actually very nice. Moreover, the salmon on the salad was very salty which made it difficult to enjoy. They also have a wide selection of coffees and pastries to choose from as well. We came here on my recent trip to Chicago. The appetizers were amazing. Best ones were the Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and the whipped feta. The chimichurri steak was pretty underwhelming but the fries were good. Others got the short ribs and they said they were amazing so I would opt for that instead next time! (Went in for a late breakfast before the One of a Kind show.) but it was totally fine, as my friend and I had a lot to catch up on! I had the egg white omelette, no cheese, and it was perfect. They always listen to your requests and always ask about food allergies. Small thing-- the bathrooms are attached to the hotel, but a lot of travels expect "auto flush" toilets, and these were not, and I won't go into more details.
