Been here twice and it wasn't memorable at all. Had the apple cinnamon pecan pancakes and was disappointed by the prepackaged apples and syrup. Boyfriend had the omelet and he wasn't disappointed but not wow'ed either. We did finish our plates as we were very hungry. Boyfriend made his version of the pancakes at home that weekend and they were much better than the restaurant. On the other hand, the staff is very nice and the facility is very clean. Stick to eating breakfast here! I have tried to do dinner and each time it was just very disappointing. The soups are horrendous . I have tried 3 different kinds, and all I can say is chicken noodle is not supposed to taste like lemon, with an inch of grease on top. The service has always been fantastic. It can get a bit confusing when you are waited on by 2-3 different people. And the lady who usually rings you up, I understand you need to talk to customers but you don't need to hear their life stories when you have a line of people waiting to be rung up. I have joined the cult following of people enjoying seafood over grits. Not sure what our nickname is, but truly it's a good cult. We came here for breakfast and after seeing someone else get the Harbor Special I told my husband we can get pancakes, bacon and eggs anywhere in the Midwest, but we can't get that. If I order it will you help me eat it? The order is big and much more than any human can or should eat at one sitting. But oh my, what a memorable dish and I wasn't hungry come lunch time. Coming from the Midwest I've never liked grits, but I had a conversion experience here. Everything here looks good it's really hard to chose. It is all served very fast. There's so much to say so I guess I better start from the beginning. I moved to Charleston from Austin last May (so not quite a year yet) and had heard that Bear E Patch was hands down one of the best spots in Charleston. Awesome, this is great, i live literally up the street, I love trying new restaurants and finding new go-to spots la la la. Well my first stop there was with my roomie and i was hardly impressed. They were literally out of everything I asked for and ended up just getting breakfast. They had pictures of food on their menu that they don't even serve. Hmmm? K well shoot just wasn't the spot for me. Well my boyfriend had moved here as well and went on his own on a separate occasion also saying he had a mediocre experience and wouldn't recommend it or even go back. One day we decided to give it a try again - because really, it gets so much hype. I had an amazing experience (we both did) we went early for breakfast and it was hot and wonderful (i'm a huge hot chocolate drinker and theirs is delicious) the wait staff was great. Only downside was that it is a busy spot but we felt it was worth it. So sweet right? We're pumped because we think we have found a new restaurant to add to our go to spots. Wellllllll.... we don't go out too often so after maybe one or two more times eating there (that was 3 stars worthy) we hadn't gone back. My mom comes to town to visit Charleston for the first time so we planned a whole day. We went there for bfast and it was great, not even a super busy line or wait or anything. We loved the special for that night (turkey and mashed potatoes) so we went back for dinner. As the evening goes on and things are good, dinner is fabulous, our visit is great I asked for more water. As I take a drink I literally swallow hard and stop and just stare at my mom. I just drank bleach. I could smell it as I breathed and taste it, it was awful. So I immediately told the waitress that I just drank bleach and she needs to get the pitcher taken away so she doesn't take it to any other customers. Her response "oh ok" . uhhh so as I sit there my mom and I half expecting foam to start coming out of my mouth, a different waitress comes up and says "oh we wash our pitchers with bleach that one just didn't get rinsed very well. At least your insides are nice and clean!" then walks away. Are you joking me?? After that, a DIFFERENT waitress comes up to me and starts to apologize immensely. Then the entire staff seemed to switch- we got our meals for free, and they were so apologetic. They were lucky that we didn't do anything right then and there, and very lucky it was my mom and not my boyfriend I was with (he's a lot more 'stern' than i) Crazy- this isn't even what made me decide to write the review. I had a terrible last two weeks (besides the point) and had just been discharged from the hospital. I can't do anything for myself and asked my roommate to pick me up some food from bear e patch. (again, mind you- i live right up the street) well it's 8:25pm i call and they close at 9:00. After literally 5 minutes of waiting because she was talking to three other people i tell her i want to order a bowl of soup and fries for pickup. She interrupts me halfway and says her cook wants to know when I'd get there. Ummm i'm sorry, but I worked as a waitress all throughout high school and college and everywhere I worked I was taught that if someone comes in and sits down at 8:59pm we seat and serve them. So I was astounded that they were going to make sure I was there even. After telling her I was up the block and it'd be 5-10 minutes, she let me start again. I'm thinking soup and fries that should be easy typically the cooks have the soup warm all day and new batches coming of both soup and fries being made throughout the day so i didn't think this was a crazy request at all. After I order she says "k be here in 10" and hangs up. ha okkkkkk so my roommates leaves gets it and brings it back no problem. They did a great job providing napkins, ketchup and a spoon and crackers, but my soup was solid as a rock and ice cold. I already wasn't even a huge fan of bear e patch but this was the last straw for me. I felt i had poor service over the phone, and I couldn't believe they even felt it was okay to give me the soup. They get one star for that ONE good time. But they are on my never ever go list. read more

My parents work nights so their treat is this place every Tuesday. After visiting a few times myself I can see why! It's a local's diner favorite. They serve a full breakfast menu all day everyday except for Sunday (because their closed-don't see that much anymore even in old school Charleston).It's a seat yourself place wen it's slow and wait to be seat when it's packed during the peak and either way the staff is prompt to greet. The daily specials are on the quaint chalkboard covered wall, with items like red velvet or Carmel-pecan pancakes or toast amongst other lunch and dinner platters (which I rarely order as I'm a breakfast lover). Most everything is made in house by the owners so be sure to enjoy the amazingly fresh, thickly sliced baked breads an biscuits with your grits, BLT or country fried steak because not too many, even in Charleston, make their own. As for price-it's no Waffle House or IHOP but it's worth the 20$ for 2 to eat and be fat and happy. As a newly found regular, my favorite picks are: Sausage gravy biscuits, any of the breakfast specials and any of the skillets. When we travel I like to eat at non chain restaurants or cafes. This one was good, & not fancy. Breakfast was served all day. Lots of choices. Many sandwich choices, wraps, quesadillas, soups, and. Daily specials. The bread for the sandwiches are homemade. Desserts were hersheys ice creams, cake and pies. When ordering a sandwich or burger you have a choice of 1 side (Lots to choose from).I had a grilled Monte Christo on Sourdough bread, rather than the light rye bread it was listed with( very good). Also had sweet potato fries, which was very good. The staff was very friendly, checking back often. We were there at 3 pm on a Monday, so it wasn't crowded. Met my friend for breakfast. There didn't appear to be anyone in charge. No one watching the line of guests, while 4-5 tables are empty. Not sure why we couldn't be seated to at least get a drink...just tell us it'll be a few minutes...or offer us coffee while we stand in line!! Okay, I did go back, and my first experience there was a fluke. While I do think it's true that their rushes are extremely under staffed, I've now been there twice outside of rush and the experience has been very pleasant. The food is good, the service is fine, and my coffee cup was never empty for long. Not that this place even needs my review, seeing its large amount of other phenomenal reviews, but I've just got to say that this place was incredibly amazing. We went for a late breakfast, which they serve between 7am and 9pm during the week, and could not have been more impressed. The yummy looking lunches being served to nearby tables, and the home-made pies that they serve definitely mean we will have to be back to try lunch sometime. When you walk into this family owned restaurant, you are immediately taken back to a simpler time in history and feel at ease with the world. This diner style is quite clean and refreshing with ample seating space and parking. Each staff member was pleasant and kind, especially our waitress who never let our drinks get low. The food was brought to us fresh way before we anticipated, and not only was it some of the best breakfast I've had in Charleston, but it was such a large quantity that I had to take half of it home (which was just as delicious later on). The pancakes were perfectly cooked (Sue's special includes eggs, choice of meat, and option of grits or potatoes), and my date's skillet (Farmer's skillet of sausage, peppers, onions and potatoes covered with sausage gravy and a side of eggs, grits and choice of biscuit or toast) was full of flavour southern. Browse the on-line menu and you'll see that there's something for everyone and the prices are more than fair! The food and customer service will definitely keep bringing us back! The wait might be awhile if going during their busiest time, but it's worth the wait! We popped into this place while we were visiting Charleston on the way to be tourists and check out one of the plantations in the area. The biggest downfall to this place was trying to narrow down the huge menu! I got a half order of the French toast and a biscuit sandwich (so hard to find good biscuits in the North!). The bread for the toast was fresh and the biscuit was nothing less than what I'd expect in the South. My husband ordered some sort of seafood plate with grits (but he subbed out the grits for potatoes), which he really enjoyed. I went on a saturday morning, and the line was wrapping around the outside of the building. My girlfriend and I decided to come back later. We came back around 11:30 a.m. and the line wasn't quite so bad, so we decided to wait. Once we were seated we got paid no attention at all. I would like to say that the service was just slow, but there was no service at all. We sat there exactly one hour before we even got our food. All the waiting aside, the food was delicious. I had the James Island omelet, and my girlfriend had the Farmer's Skillet. Both were excellent. If I return to the Bear E Patch Cafe it will only be on a weekday. This is your typical greasy spoon joint. The waitresses (not "servers") call you "honey" and you never have to worry about asking for more coffee. I worked down the street at the TV station and would stop here for breakfast. Can't comment on the other meals. Typical diner-style menu. Family friendly. I have been to this restaurant several times. I used to live West Ashley but now I live in Goose Creek so I don't get to come here often. I had the Peach Pancakes and some smoked sausage links. The pancakes were really big and the peaches were fresh made not the crap you get out of the can. Really Yummy. The smoked sausage was cooked perfect. It was split down the middle and some was burnt and some was not... PERFECT!! My son had the Berry Pancakes and they were the same but with with a Blueberry, Raspberry and Strawberry compote. I am not a Raspberry fan but it was still tasty! Great place for breakfast.... I dont think I have ever eaten there for lunch... Hmmm I guess i will have to try it. read more
