    Day After Thanksgiving sandwich
    Nicholas P.

Like most else on Daniel Island, Mpishi is quite charming. I came here on a Friday morning with my fiancee, my dad, and my sister. We were struck by the cute interior and the welcoming staff. To eat, my fiancee had the breakfast quesadilla. I had the two egg breakfast (scrambled, please). My dad and sister had the Day After Thanksgiving sandwich. Sourdough slices packed full of turkey, stuffing, and cranberries and accompanied with gravy, the thing looked absolutely delicious. My sister liked it so much she refused to share. Of the four of us, can you guess which two were the winners? The menu is seasonal, so while you may miss out on the chance for this Thanksgiving sandwich, that also means there's always something new on the menu to enjoy. Check out Mpishi for a casual breakfast, a weekend brunch, or a quick lunchtime bite to eat.

    Omelette and sour dough toast

Came here for breakfast today. Coffee could have been hotter. We tried to order the Greek scramble which was listed on their website but not the menu that we were given. They said due to staff shortages, certain items had been taken off the menu until next week. I had the breakfast quesadilla. It was excellent, a ton of flavor and very filling. They did not skimp on the ingredients. It also came with a side of sour cream and pico de Gallo, which is always nice. My husband created his own omelette and had sour dough toast with it of which he enjoyed. Service was ok. Everytime I've been here, service is mediocre, management should work on that, it's an easy fix that could make a big difference to a lot of people.

Found this place kinda on accident: new to area and was looking for something for lunch... this place hardly shows up on searches and I don't know why!!! AMAZING! The food is absolutely delicious! Prices may seem a tad high for lunch for some, but I promise: you get what you pay for...! Bartender was telling me about their blond bloody mix, which I tried - is a local Charleston creation - and so yummy!!! The bloody was delish and the salt on the rim flavorful.... And to appeal to my girly side, a little edible gold glitter ! The salad portion was HUGE! Got the small, expecting half that size, so I would be afraid to see how large the large is! The dressing was perfect with goat cheese and beets... but other than that, a pretty standard goat cheese salad. Then ordered the chicken, avocado, pimento sando with their Mac salad.... Was torn on what to order as many of their items sounded delish and fun (leftover Turkey dinner sando?!) but I am so glad I chose this! Well balanced flavor and the chicken is well seasoned and moist... definitely do not skimp on fillings...! Also, I ordered the macaroni salad thinking it was probably be over dressed and bland and quite the opposite!!! Fresh and light! This place is amazing and I will be back for sure!!! My only complaint: they are only open 8-2!!! Lol! Other than that, solid 9.5/10

For a truly beautiful, hand made, artisanal breakfast this is a find. Not inexpensive but for the quality you get- a decent value. Best gluten-free bread(made in house) crests a cravable breakfast sandwich that will likely carry you until dinner. 2 sausage patties, bacon, cheese, and egg atop that hearty bread that has been grilled until golden. Comes with home fries. Real grits are served here- they are a split at a steep $5 for a side. But still I have a hard time resisting. Plus for you gluten eating individuals- they have a fantastic pastry selection made in house as well. Cute casual interior. Support local and give them a try.

Below is an edited email I sent to Mpishi owners re: disastrous lunch: Dear Andy & Allie: Rather than write a Yelp review I thought I'd contact you personally.[Note: I reversed my initial decision after owner failed to respond to my second email.] Saturday Oct. 19th around 1 p.m. a friend and I dined at your restaurant. Todd was our server; Christy manager. Order #2008:1. I ordered "Mediteranean Seared Tuna Salad with Arugula, and Pine Nuts, Served with green basil dressing. Small $7.50." She ordered "Breakfast Quesadilla with Scrambled Eggs, Sausage, Bacon, Potatoes, Black Beans, Peppers, and Cheddar Cheese, served with salsa and sour cream $11.50." My salad was flavorless. Limp greens. Only a few pine nuts. Watery dressing tasteless. One inch-square hunk of tough tuna with fat still attached and not "seared " Friend was dismayed after pulling apart the quesadillas and finding no eggs. Barely any black beans. I should have taken photos. We are both experienced and refined diners. She wanted to try your restaurant. Had I wanted a great tuna salad I would have gone to Laura Alberts where a half-order of exquisite Sesame Crusted Tuna Salad (three large slices of tuna) is 50 cents more and divinely delicious.[Note: I attached a photo of Laura Alberts Sesame Crusted Tuna Salad.] Todd asked. I answered. Salad was the worst I've ever had. Why? I did not wish to go into it. I did ask him to comp our order. I've only done that one other time in decades. No dice. Christy came over and asked how me how my food was. I charitably said, "Mediocre." $8.25 total bill for a salad that was nearly inedible. I ate it anyway. If I had been Todd and Christy, I would have offered to comp the two orders. Kind regards, Marty Davis Daniel Island The reply: Good morning Marty, I appreciate you letting me know about your experience, and am sorry to hear that it was a negative one. We are always open to constructive criticism as it allows us to continue to improve the restaurant. We will take this review seriously, and hope you are inclined to to give Mpishi another try in the future.  Thanks again for you candor, Allie Clay My reply: Thanks for your response, Allison. My email was intended to alert you to a serious issue affecting your reputation. Perhaps you might consider a gratis dining experience for my friend and me. Then I will reconsider returning.  Kind regards, Marty Davis No response. You be the judge. Order Mpishi's Mediterranean salad. Compare it with Laura Alberts for 50 cents more. (See LA screenshot.) If I were Mpishi owners I would have comped the bill on the spot. I was in the restaurant business years ago. I gave Allie another opportunity to give me a reason to return by asking her to offer us a "gratis dining experience. Customer service and community goodwill are critical in growing a successful business. I asked for an incentive to give Mpishi another shot. I didn't get it.

Tandoori chicken lettuce and tomato sandwich ("TCLT") with sides of potato salad, cole slaw, and rice salad. None of it very good.
    Anna K.

The one thing this place has going for it is that it's open for lunch on Sunday, which is not the case for many places on Daniel Island. However, there wasn't much in the way of a lunch menu - mostly just brunch items. They had 2 specials though which were sandwiches. I had the "TCLT" (tandoori chicken lettuce and tomato sandwich) which came with potato salad, cole slaw, and rice salad. The sandwich had great toasted bread but was otherwise very bland except for the sriracha that I added. None of the sides were very good either. I would have been much happier with a side of nice chips and a pickle spear instead of 3 below-average salads. The breakfast food that I saw other people ordering looked pretty good, so maybe that's the way to go here. If you're looking for lunch food, you'll be much better off with a Publix sub.

I got the almond sour (delicious) and my friends were pleasantly surprised they serve decaffeinated espresso martinis. My sister got a spritz, which she also enjoyed. I was also touched that the culinary team was kind enough to sign a birthday card for me. Our table also received complimentary cacio e pepe popcorn to snack on--yum! For appetizers, we got the tuna tar tar (Crudo di Tonno), the strawberry caprese salad, and some shrimp--all so delicious, that they FLEW off the plate! For mains, I got the Rotolo al Forno, which was VERY tasty. My friends got the chicken milanese, the Sorelle spaghetti, and the sworfish. For side dishes, we also got the meatball with polenta and some potatoes. For dessert, I got a complimentary birthday cannoli with a candle and the Limone (a berry and cream-filled dessert in the form of a lemon!) What. A. Meal!!! The food and the locale are just stunning. But of course, not cheap. As a whole, we paid a whopping $399.75 without tip! Was it worth it for a feast of glamour? I'd say so--but definitely not an every day treat unless you have the budget! I wasn't exactly sure what to expect other than 8 courses and a 3 hour dining experience. Every detail had to be meticulously labored over. From the named place cards with your menu for the evening tucked inside sealed by a wax stamp (very nice touch) to the hand crafted mocktails (we went non alcoholic) there was not a single detail left out. Dinner started promptly at 7 and prior to every dish the chef came out of the kitchen and explained what is in the dish, where the ingredients were sourced from, how they were cooked and plated. Followed by the sommelier explaining the wine pairing, the region the grapes were grown in, what to expect while tasting the wine, and why it pairs nicely with the dish. Honeysuckle rose also catered to my food allergy and substituted my dish with something exceptional while my wife had what was initially planned (the quail). We have been to other multi course restaurants only to feel rushed so they could get another table opened. With Honeysuckle Rose everything is timed, we all get our plates at the same time, and the experience finishes at the same time. The evening closed out with the staff talking about how grateful they are of eachother and for all of their guests. This is a very quaint place, seating only about 20 people and it is only 1 service per night. The setting is very intimate and the music choice playing in the background was given much thought, very tasteful and appropriate. This is also a prepurchase meal and gratuity is included, I offered additional gratuity and was politely refused. There was not a single plate of food or drink that we did not thoroughly enjoy. Quite honestly the $500 price tag on this dinner was an easy price to pay for all you get. We got the chef's experience (seating at the bar top overlooking the kitchen). We were able to interact with chef River And chef Sky. I would strongly suggest getting the chef's experience, it's the same price wether sitting in the dining room or at the bar area (only 4seats). If you're looking for an exceptional dining experience, where every detail has been meticulously dialed in, and the food is second to none I would suggest honeysuckle rose. We enjoyed our time there so much we will definitely be back very soon. Job well done HR!!

Brace yourselves--this is going to be a long one, because this experience deserves every bit of it…read more We recently had the opportunity to do a chef's tasting at Honeysuckle Rose, and from the very first interaction, it was clear this wasn't going to be your average night out. We had a bit of a hiccup to start--we couldn't find our gift card (of course). I called and spoke with Kelleanne, and I have to say, this is truly where the experience began. She was warm, understanding, and genuinely funny, turning what could have been a stressful moment into something easy and even enjoyable. She handled everything with kindness and grace, and it set the tone for the evening ahead. A couple of days before our reservation, we received a confirmation call from James--but not the typical kind. He asked thoughtful, personal questions: who my guest would be, our water preferences (yes, really), allergies, absolute no-go foods, and even a song that held meaning to us. At that point, our curiosity was fully piqued. When we arrived, the space immediately stands out. It's very dark--blacked-out windows, black walls, black ceiling--and it's all completely intentional. Before the meal began, Kelleanne explained that the goal is to create an intimate dinner party atmosphere, where you forget the outside world and fully immerse yourself in the experience. And it works. It really works. At your seat, you're given what feels like an invitation--that's your menu for the evening. Each course is introduced by chef River and sommelier Mary Kate, adding a personal and thoughtful touch to every dish. I won't go course-by-course (we'd be here all night), but just know: every single one was worthy of praise. Chef River is absolutely crushing it. We were lucky enough to sit at the chef's counter, which I highly recommend if you can swing it. Watching chefs River, Ryan, and Trae work was like witnessing a perfectly choreographed performance. After each course, every surface was meticulously cleaned--counters wiped, stoves reset--everything returned to pristine condition before the next dish began. It was as impressive as the food itself. And it doesn't stop there. You notice Cody in the back, carefully polishing each glass and plate to perfection. Every single person on the team is fully invested in making this an extraordinary experience--and that's exactly what it is. What really sets this place apart is the attention to detail and the personal touches. Maybe you get an extra bite, a meaningful story from Mary Kate, or a surprise dessert to celebrate something special. There's an element of the unexpected that makes the evening feel uniquely yours. We left completely blown away. Not just by the food, but by the people. Kelleanne and Ryan are the kind of individuals you genuinely enjoy watching succeed--they bring something special to the entire experience. And a quick note for those who notice the details (like I do): even the bathroom is stunning--beautifully designed and just as intentional as everything else in the space. If you're looking for something truly different, immersive, and unforgettable--this is it. Don't think twice. Book the reservation. We'll absolutely be back, and we're already looking forward to exploring their other concepts.

On that visit, we all ordered the Dirty South pizza, a burger with fries, and the mini corn dogs, and everything was just as impressive. It came out hot, crispy, and fresh, with plenty of their amazing sauces. Honestly, we were blown away. That experience alone would've been enough, but going in person sealed it. We were greeted right away by a super friendly staff, and our server was incredibly helpful. We started with the fried dough dip plate and then got the chicken bacon ranch sandwich. When we came back, my wife ordered the burger and fries again and it was dynamite all over again. Consistency like that says a lot. Everything came out quickly, tasted incredible, and the whole team was so accommodating and genuinely welcoming, creating a really family-friendly atmosphere. The vibe is awesome too. Laid-back, great music, plenty of space, and a really cool rock-and-roll garage aesthetic. You can tell the staff enjoys being there, which makes a huge difference. And I have to mention the drinks. The dirty sodas, especially the vanilla Coke, are dangerously good. The kind of thing you could absolutely get hooked on. And somehow, on top of all that, the prices are more than fair. It's such a refreshing break from the overpriced downtown spots. From start to finish, this place has it all: great food, great service, great atmosphere, and great prices. Total package.

The steak was…read moreincredible, perfectly cooked and full of flavor, easily one of the better steaks I've had in Charleston. I know there's a lot of hype around Hall's, and the atmosphere there is definitely great, but in my opinion the food at Oak is better. It feels a touch more relaxed than Hall's while still being a really nice, upscale spot. If you're visiting Charleston and looking for a great steakhouse, I'd absolutely recommend Oak.

The restaurant itself is lovely in a historic setting with 3 floors and a lot of classic, traditional touches. First things first, the service was wonderful. We had a reservation and were immediately sat by the hostess and greeted by our server. He gave us recommendations and told us half orders of the sides were available since it was only my husband and I. We had a glass of rose and a glass of red, nothing special but what you expect and at a place like this you expect to pay $15/glass. We ordered the New York strip, half orders of Brussels and mushrooms and the steak frites with truffle fries and bernaise sauce. The steaks were cooked very well which was great (it is a steakhouse), but honestly just tasted like pepper. The bernaise sauce was watery, cold and flavorless. The Brussels had some flavor, but nothing to knock your socks off and pretty much the same with the mushrooms. Honestly, the star of the show were the truffle fries. Crispy, lots of flavor and hot. You obviously have higher expectations when coming into an establishment such as Oak and sadly it let me down. There's other fabulous restaurants in Charleston and honestly other steakhouses I'd recommend. I'm glad we tried it, but I won't be rushing back.
