We ordered a vegan strawberry snowflake cake for a birthday. On the way home, the cake crumbled. Like the structure of the cake just fell apart. We called the store and within 10 minutes, the owner of the store called us back and made it right. She had a new cake made (albeit a different flavor) and had it delivered to our house in time for the party. Absolutely top notch customer service. She even threw in some vegan cookies. Despite the strawberry snowflake cake crumbling, the taste was amazing. Probably the best tasting vegan cake we've ever had. Nothing says Sunday like a coffee shop - full of busy bees typing up term papers, the smell of fresh ground coffee, and displays of pastries. In terms of aesthetic, Bean Counter is no exception to cozy coffee shop. On this particular Sunday, it was full of people quietly nestled in chairs and working away on laptops. We came in for a quick coffee break after disappointingly driving to a Starbucks that is now out of business. I wish our visit here hadn't been as disappointing. We bought two coffees (an iced salty sailor and a cappuccino) and a fruit tart. The coffees were good but not great. Though I obviously didn't expect it black, the salty sailor ended up being mostly milk and sugar. So I didn't finish it. The fruit tart was the real disappointment. Though stunning and colorful in this photo, it was over after the first bite. It was completely frozen - like couldn't even bite through the strawberries kind of frozen. A fruit tart isn't something one can really warm up in a microwave, so we just had to let it thaw but that's not really on par with a "quick coffee break". Had the tart not been frozen, I'd even have given Bean Counter 4 stars. Seems like a great place to study and hole up with a warm latte. But I couldn't look past that frozen fruit. Ambience: A nice neighborhood bakery and cafe with so many selections of sweets to choose from. Surrounded by a bunch of restaurants, this place is a decent sized coffee shop. I felt like a kid looking at the variety of pastries they offer. I got a regular latte and a molten lava a cake. The molten lava cake is in the refrigerator area. I guess they microwave it before serving. Coffee was good...I am not a coffee person. So, all lattes are the same for me. Lava cake was good. Due to my odd work schedule, many decent local coffee places are closed prior to my overnight shifts. I'm always on the hunt for a decent coffee shop other than the typical chains like DD. So glad I was able to find this cute little shop that's open until 10 pm! That's even later than the Starbucks in the area. It surprisingly is still pretty lively at that time of hour especially since closing time was approaching. Staff super friendly, I'm always asking for recommendations. The barista was able to make awesome recommendations the last two times I've been based on my preference. I got the spring mix which is no longer on their menu - but basically a combination of caramel, coconut and chocolate coffee. I throughly enjoyed their strong brew coffee. Pretty similar to Starbucks quality. Their bakery items look amazing and I definitely want to try in the future! One of my new local hot spots for a late night coffee! read more

Clean, bright, and charming! Lots of treats- everything from big, beautifully decorated cupcakes, to individual tiramisu. A few vegan options, but no pie which was what my heart was set on. SALTY UNDERCOOKED CAKE - Ordered a gluten free cake with special football logo for my sons birthday. Prepaid and upon pick up was quickly shown a wrinkled fondant image. They offered to redo it which I appreciated. Upon check out the owner Alice said the color bled because of untrained associates who didn't know how to properly wrap up and refrigerate the cake. once home when we cut into the cake we realized the cake was UNDERCOOKED and SALTY!!! what a disaster! Unfortunately I can no longer use this bakery nor recommend it. At one time they were great and for a while now I have been disappointed but a SALTY UNDERCOOKED cake is not acceptable and therefore i can no longer be a customer after 13 years. read more

The gluten-free cupcakes tested positive for gluten several times (more often than not), and a gluten-free birthday cake also tested positive for gluten, using a Nima sensor (see nimasensor.com for details). Just today (8/9/19) a cupcake tested positive for gluten. The owner seemed interested in decreasing the gluten content of the gluten-free baked goods, but it's hard to say whether she made any progress (maybe she'll make public the results of her efforts in a response to this review). Two stars because the owner seems to care. It's a nice enough place, honestly, I just can't give any place higher than two stars if I don't feel confident eating there. You could argue that the Nima sensor is too sensitive, as it can reliably detect gluten at levels below the FDA's standard of 20 parts per million (ppm) for "gluten-free" labeling (you could also argue that the FDA's cutoff is too high given that people with celiac disease can be sensitive to levels lower than 20 ppm). Unfortunately, the Nima sensor produces a binary "Gluten/No Gluten" result, so it's impossible to say whether something that tests positive for gluten contains 10 ppm or 1000 ppm, hence my weariness about Bean Counter's baked goods. read more

I don't normally give bad reviews for local businesses but this experience was outrageous. I visited the Bean Counter's sister location on Grove St and ordered a chai latte with almond milk and an espresso shot (commonly referred to as a "Dirty Chai"). I order dirty chais often as they are delicious and have plenty of caffeine. Upon ordering, the barista informed me that the order was $9. When I asked how the coffee could be so expensive she said "well espresso is an extra $3 because normally you wouldn't add it to the drink and almond milk is $1.25 extra." The extra $3 for an espresso shot baffled me because on the menu it explicitly says $0.95. The barista was nonchalant and unresponsive to my concern over a $9 beverage. (Even in San Francisco the dirty chais aren't nearly this expensive.) My recommendation is to grab coffee elsewhere. The service isn't great at the Grove street location and you're already close to a nearby Dunkin Donuts where a drink twice the size will cost half the price. read more

I used to frequent many small coffee shops in Chicago, and when I came across the Bean Counter, I felt like I was back home. Something better than the feeling of home though is the feeling of making a wonderful discovery. Music selection is superb and eclectic. One day, I walked in and Van Morrison's Astral Weeks album was playing, and another day there was some funky polka music going on. Pastry selection made me ecstatic as well. Upon closer inspection of the glass case, I noticed there were multiple gluten-free choices(I'm gluten intolerant), and most of the homemade GF things I've had are too grainy or they taste funny. I came here for a wedding cake tasting with my sister. I didn't want to come here at first- I've assisted as a day-of-wedding planner for years in Boston and didn't think that a "coffee shop" could possibly have good cake. I want the best for my sister and was thinking more along the lines of Jenny's Wedding Cakes, Icing on the Cake, Party Favors or the old standby Konditor Meister. Wow. I was soooooooo wrong- the cakes were delicious. My sister was able to select 3 flavors to sample and we met with the owner Alice for over an hour. Alice was a pleasure to deal with- you could tell she loves what she does and it showed. There were 4 cake albums to go through to get ideas for design and she seemed to remember each wedding cake, venue, and couple. We sampled the vanilla cake with lemon buttercream, carrot cake (the best I've ever had) and chocolate cake with raspberry. The pricing is by the cake size, not PP, so we knew exactly what we were paying for. We were given our own cake to sample and took home more than half. My sister placed her order on the spot! That's not all I took home though- I couldn't pass up the gorgeous huge cupcakes in the display so I left with a box full of cupcakes (carrot cake, red velvet, mudpie, peanut butter) and cookies. The store was crazy busy the entire time, I saw many people come in to pick up cakes. Before I left, I placed an order for my sister's bridal shower cake. Today I woke up craving a cupcake. So while still in bed, I went to my yelp app to resolve this issue. This is how I found the Bean Counter Coffee Bar and Bakery. I saw a user uploaded photo of what looked like some sort of apple pie cupcake, and was immediately sold. I ended up arriving at the cafe around 1 pm and was happily surprised that the place wasn't completely packed. This allowed me to enjoy a cappuccino while reading a book near the window in peace. The cafe had a very cozy vibe to it, and offered a serious selection of pastries to choose from. I ended up buying a carrot cake cupcake to go. I haven't been to the Bean since high school but I stopped in today for an on the go breakfast. I had a cold brew coffee (nitro) and it was different, I wouldn't get it again only because it wasn't my type of drink. I also had an EVERYTHING breakfast sandwich...that was a win.
