I cannot possibly express how much we were OBSESSED with our wedding cake from Bean Counter!!!!! Alice was not only an expert in delicious cake and design, but friendly, helpful, and communicative. We have many allergies in our family to gluten and tree nuts including myself and most of our wedding party. Alice made us feel so safe in having our completely gluten and tree nut free cake for our wedding, along with our incredible cannolis and eclairs. My old school Italian family was RAVING about how delicious it all was! I barely wanted a wedding cake before going to our original cake tasting because I was convinced that there was no way that a gluten free wedding cake would be good. I was SO wrong! After eating the first bite, I was literally more excited about our cake than I have ever been about any dessert in my entire life (which, believe me, says a lot). We fell in love with not only our cake flavors (one layer lemon/raspberry, one layer apple pie filling, and one layer chocolate chip cannoli), but Alice worked with us to get the perfect design that we wanted. Our cake was GORGEOUS and we can't wait to get photos back from our photographer so we can keep reminiscing about our beautiful AND delicious cake! Sampled these cupcakes to determine if I might want them for wedding and my answer is a flat out most definitive NO. My mom and I went into the store and picked an assortment of four cupcakes to try. They were all disgusting and I will tell you why. The cake wasn't fresh, but it wasn't the worst cake ever. My issue laid in the frosting, which if you ask me is the best part of a cupcake. It had ZERO flavor and tasted very off. The worst cupcake was the cookies and cream cupcake. The frosting tasted like it had been frozen and thawed and basically just tasted like freezer burn. The oreo on top was soft too, which is NOT how an oreo should be. For the first time ever, I couldn't finish ANY of the cupcakes the frostings tasted so freezer burned and gross. I do not recommend getting ANY baked goods from this place. I also know someone who had them do a cake for their wedding and they were very upset and disappointed by the final outcome, both look and taste. Go elsewhere :) read more

My husband and I picked out wedding cake from the Bean Counter and it was amazing! Alice was truly great to work with and the cake was absolutely delicious (chocolate cake with mocha mousse filling, chocolate cake with chocolate mousse, and a vanilla cake with raspberry mousse). The best part was we got to enjoy our favorite flavor (chocolate/mocha) in our one year anniversary with a complimentary personal cake. Despite my last minute email, Alice easily agreed to making the cake just a week before our anniversary and I was able to send over a picture of our wedding cake which served as "payment". This is the coolest little bakery in Worcester, hands down. The breakfast options are all delicious from the breakfast sandwiches to the muffins. This place has two shining stars- the coffee and the desserts. You can get literally any coffee made expertly and served in an awesome teal mug or to go. If you want a "kick in the pants" with an extra shot of espresso, go for it! It may leave your hands shaking, but it's great for finals week. Admittedly, I'm not a vegan and one of my favorite desserts is the vegan whoopie pie. It's basically 2 oatmeal cookies with frosting in the middle. It's so good and large that i never finish it in 1 sitting. For $3 you cant beat it! The fruit tart is perhaps the prettiest option in the pastry case. It is so colorful and it is as good as it looks! Also- kudos to the owners. They display local art from different artists each month and they are up for sale. Gotta love being able to chill in a leather armchair and do homework while sipping a tea, listening to mainstream alternative, and people watching while stuffing your face in cupcakes. read more

Is it tacky to write a review as you sit in the very place you're reviewing? Well. Call me Cyndi Lauper then. I have been here once before and liked it enough, but the wifi was down! Blerg! This time, though, this time is a whole different animal. I am enjoying an iced Charlston Chew espresso beverage (it's got caramel, vanilla, banana...it's interesting) and a pretty tasty red velvet cupcake. HUGE assortment of goodies greet you at the counter and the indie music on low in the background is a nice touch. If I lived nearby, or went to WPI, I would be a regular here for sure. I really like The Bean Counter. There's a lot of things in this area and the parking is pretty terrible. I've gotten only a few things here- almond milk latte. This coffee shop has a lot going for it. It sits at a great location on Highland and is really close to WPI. There is plenty of seating, including one fun window seat and there is decent access to outlets. The coffee is what you would expect from a local place. My only issue with this place is that they don't inform you that there is a credit card minimum till after you order and they pour your coffee. Plenty of places have minimums and a simple handwritten sign at the register is a pretty standard way of communicating that. This was not the case here and it felt sneaky on their part. All in all I think this place is fine. Bean Counter is a local business and going there is better than helping a corporate overlord like Starbucks. read more

This is our go-to coffee shop when we are visiting Worcester, MA. Our favorite part, besides the latte art, are the amazing vegan whoopie pies. They have a great environment for visiting with friends, or bring your laptop. It is a little loud so I probably would not get much reading done there. Hit or a miss. Quality has dropped and staff isn't the best lately. This place was once the spot. Unfortunately this past year hasn't been good. The lattes have been a hit or a miss also way to much foam about half a cups worth which is way to much.The chai has become a cup of cinnamon. Best case just get a plain cup of black coffee. The staff is nice but it varies on who you get. The pastries they serve are sometimes stale but when they're not they rock. She was so mad I was even there at 7 am and made it so extremely apparent. Unfortunately never returning. The male barista with glasses this morning was EXTREMELY rude. I've been here twice before and had great experiences both times. But I brought my sister and her husband here today for some breakfast and coffee and could not have been more appalled at the way this man behaved towards us. Not sure if he was having a bad day prior to us arriving but still it's completely inappropriate to take it out on customers. This place is fantastic. Great exotic blends of coffee, (although sometimes they are a bit sweet). The cakes are amazing, espically the one with strawberrys and chocolate lace like pieces. It's very un-worcester, which is definately a plus, if you are looking for a place to take people that give them a higher opinion of worcester. There is one big problem, the owner. She is absoultly horrible to her employees in fact I've seen her be so rude to them, I've almost left. The people who work there are just fine and very sweet, the owner however seems a parnoid, and very anti-social. However, she isn't always there, so it's not a problem and she's never rude to a customer, infact if it wasnt for her, I would give this place 5 stars. The coffee is great, but the pastries often leave a lot lacking. Muffins are frequently over or undercooked, and there is just not a good selection for breakfast pastry. For baked goods, I'm surprised to see good reviews. The cupcakes are just not good--dry with mediocre frosting and the cookies are just ok. If you're looking for a nice place to hang out and have a decent cup of coffee, they're great. But for baked goods, you're better off going some other place. read more

I really hate reviewing places that I'm not a fan or indifferent to, but I feel I need to give my 2 cents here. The space is a great place to grab a cup with a friend, go over business plans, study, what have you. I spent a day here working on my thesis and had a reasonably good experience. There is a great selection of baked goods, though I haven't had any yet. The coffee is OK -- maybe a little bit under OK. Actually, to be frank, I've spent more time and money at Starbucks than here and that saddens me. First off, the drip coffee is meh. I've tasted better from instant coffee and that's being nice. I haven't tried the other drinks, but I wasn't inclined to shell out more money to someone who can't get drip right. Maybe that's why they offer the sweets... Second, there is no discount for bringing your own mug. I've never spent more than $2 on a cup of coffee -- much less a small cup -- and much of that has to do with the mug discount. I think it's a psychological thing, but dishing out more than two George Washingtons for a cup of coffee makes me feel dirty inside. Third, there is no discount on refills. Full price on the second cup. And third. Not that the coffee is so great that I'd want another, but sometimes you just need something to keep your mouth busy. And no discount for reusing your mug! I might as well just pocket the mug and ask for a new cup at this rate. Fourth, no frequent buyer's program. One free cup every 10th, for example. At least give me the illusion that my business is appreciated. A transient customer is treated no differently than a regular; loyalty is not highly regarded at this establishment. Not cool. Especially if the coffee itself is meh, which brings me to my last point. It's just not worth it. If I were just a 1-cup kinda guy with loose change to spare, maybe I can eek out an existence as a regular here. However, seeing as I could go down the road to Starbucks and stay reasonably caffeinated all day without rotting the innards of my mouth for under $2, there needs to be some changes made at the Bean Counter before I'll be making my next visit. read more

This place has decent coffee, free WiFi and the pastry looks delicious however, there are a few negatives. No parking, rude counter girls and they only take cash which is very inconvenient. It does have potential Update 6/28/13 I revisited this place last week when a friend was in town and had a very nice experience, thankfully because the pastry is very good. They redecorated and its very nice inside now. They accept debit cards although there is a $5 minimum. And this time the guy behind the counter was very friendly which is very important to me. My only complaint for this visit was the lack of toilet paper in the not very clean bathroom and the lack of parking on highland street. read more

Coffee is awful. Baked goods are acceptable. Carrot cake cupcake is quite good. Low review is mainly for the staff. Almost all of them seem very cold or disinterested. And they routinely lock up or shut down the register 15-30 mins before closing. If it says you close at 10, can't you stay open until 10? read more

Ok, so here's my experience. Previously I have had a cake from Bean Counter at work and loved it, so I went online and found a birthday cake for my 6 year old. I called and asked how much it would be for the cake for my daughter's birthday party. 14 kids, Frozen themed. I was informed I should get the 10 inch round cake, and that the price did not include the little frozen toys at the top of the cake. I would have to purchase them. The quote was $122.00. I was in shock. Whooaa! So I said thank you and went down to Cullpeppers bakery where I ordered a Frozen themed 1/4 sheet personalized cake with the frozen toys on top included for $23.95 total after tax. Though the Bean Counter cakes taste pretty good, their price for a child's birthday party cake just takes the cake!!!!! read more

BCCBB : Single-handedly attempting to turn around Worcester's reputation. Am I in trendy Sommerville? What is this tomfoolery??!! This coffee bar is a divine escape: dashingly European chic. Marvelously tempting bakery items and a mouth-watering latte selection. Black Diamond Coffees are new to me, but I think we'll be fast friends. My Snicker latte (small 4$, certainly European chic prices) was delicious but a bit too sweet/syrupy. Tea totters - no fear! A marvelous selection of teas are on hand (the beau got a Vanilla Bean which I was jealous of). The service was marvelous (it's always nice see genuinely happy people providing a quality product). There were two sections of seating; one was a little quieter than the other, but both would serve well for reading solo, chatting with friends, or collaborating on projects. Metered parking isn't difficult to secure, but keep an eye out for the entrance (it's a bit camouflaged in its Worcester landscape). read more

It's always nice to be able to support a local business instead of a chain, and this tiny shop was a perfect air conditioned respite from the heat. They were out of cold brew coffee, and the staff knew very very little about coffee in general, but was very sweet even when she had a line of people. I really like the coffee and pastries at the Bean Counter. In fact, everything I have ever eaten there has been super-delicious! The art is usually pretty interesting too. There are a couple negatives about it, though. 1) Parking can really suck. If you don't score an on-street spot right in front of the cafe, you are kind of out of luck. You will probably end up driving through a maze of one way streets and end up back where you started without having found a parking spot at all. 2) Some of the girls/women that work there can be a little snotty. They aren't happy to be working there, and they let you know it. Some, on the other hand, are perfectly helpful. 3) The seats in the cafe are remarkably uncomfortable, so don't plan on staying for long unless you bring a cushion. If you are in the area it is worth a try. Like I said, the coffee is good and the pastries are delicious, but don't expect much else. read more

I am a regular at the Bean. It's such a comfortable place to be, with the casual setting, familiar faces, and wonderful aroma in the air. Since I was a barista for 6 years, I know what coffee drinks should taste like. I am usually not disapointed at the Bean. The only problem I have occasionally is getting my drink too hot, even when I have requested it at 140 degrees. But, normally when that happens it's with a barista who is just learning the ropes, so it's understandable. Learning to make drinks can take some time. I should know. The chai is outstanding. It's the best tasting chai I have ever had. They also have some specialty drinks, such as the Milky Way that I am also a fan of. The Mighty Leaf teas that they sell are wonderful on a cold day. Try the African Nectar or the Chamamile Citrus. Being a vegetarian/vegan, I love that they offer soy milk (unlike so many other cafes). They also offer tofuti for bagels. On top of that, they have some vegan desserts, such as their cookies. They are fantastic, especially when they are just out of the oven. They also offer special order vegan cakes. I have not tried the vanilla yet, but the chocolate is wonderful. It's thicker than normal cake, similar to a brownie. I highly suggest that you try the Bean. They have so much to offer. read more

Coffee is either great or burnt, and there's a real crap shoot as to how your service is going to be depending on who is working. The staff is often stressed or overworked and that hurts the business. Sometimes owners try to save a nickel and end up losing dollars. The vegan whoopsie pie is out of this world, and I'm not even a vegan. Iced coffee is better than hot and this is the kind of place that makes you out in your own cream and sugar.
