It's got just the right mix of bounce, density, and butteriness, without being too greasy. Big, fresh blueberries (not the shriveled kind). Plenty of crumbly streusel on top for extra taste and texture. Their mixed berry has multiple fruit presence and more of it, minus the streusel. Also very good. Sometimes the muffins are warm. Sometimes a little long in the tooth. -- Cakes: That's their claim to fame, and for good reason. They're more expensive than most, but so dense, rich, and heavy that a small slice goes a long way. My favorite is the chocolate raspberry decadence (pool of raspberry atop a deep, dark chocolate frosting). Or maybe the strawberry snowflake, which is like the best strawberry shortcake you ever had. -- Cupcakes: These often feature some of the same ingredients as the cakes, such as that killer chocolate ganache. Great for the toppings and fillings, though the cake part (especially if chocolate base) is often dry. -- Cookies: Noticeably less impressive, EXCEPT for the Linzer heart. Great flavor and texture in the raspberry and shortbread. -- Coffee: Good stuff. Not elite, but good, in heavy mugs with good feel. Service is a little lacking. Stopped by Bean Counter Bakery Cafe the other day for a caffeine fix and got an Iced Matcha Latte, Cheesecake Cup Oreo, and a Croissant. Nothing extraordinary but still good. The matcha was a bit too milky than expected, the cheesecake was delicious and the croissant was alright (wish it was warmed up). My favorite part was the space, the cafe has a decent work-friendly space separate from the main lobby making it perfect to get things. I drove by here so many times and finally was able to drop in. Line moved fairly quickly for a morning rush on Christmas Eve. We dropped in for a quick pickup for cookies for Santa. He'll surely enjoy the cookies tonight. We bought Not Your Grandma's (chocolate chip) and Oatmeal raisin cookies.. Not Your grandmaster's was packed with chocolate with also a hint of salt giving that sweet and savory taste. So tasty. With the holiday rush, the parking was still reasonably pleasant. I pre ordered and pre paid for a cake, and when I went to pick it up I was told I had to get in the line with everyone else ordering coffees, breakfast sandwiches, etc (with attitude). it took me over 20 minutes to finally get my cake that they had to just ask me the name of and grab it from the back. For a $70 6 inch cake pre paid all frosting cake, you would think they would prioritize those customers, especially since I'm going to a party afterwards that I'm now running behind for. Was told to pick it up from 12-2pm and came at 12:05. Last cake I'm getting from them. read more

We ordered a gender cake and I specifically went to the store to place the order because I didn't know the gender and it was on my patient portal. I kept being told to do it online and hand them an envelope with it. But in order to put the results in an envelope would involve me looking at it. I was shocked to not be able to place an order with the girl behind the counter and to do it online. I've worked at a bakery for 10 years previously and we weren't allowed to turn away orders so I was shocked. My second issue was $77 for a 6 inch cake that was all frosting. I didn't like how I couldn't get a smaller cake (since there were only 4 of us). The cake to frosting ratio was gross to me. We let the cake sit out for 3 hours which was recommended to soften and it cracked the top, the cake/frosting were still pretty solid. When I ordered a cake I expect there to be some cake and not all frosting and the frosting was pretty gross tasting (no other words to describe it) and the cake had no flavor. We were let down on this cake and for $77 for a 6 inch I regret this all together and will not be ordering again from them. read more

Very tasty desserts, but on the expensive side. I bought two desserts for $10 total and one of them was the white chocolate chip cookie dough bar. This thing was heavy and dense. The cookie dough layer was so good and had a perfect mushy texture. The taste of the white chocolate layer on top did not fit well with the cookie dough. It also came off completely as one piece after I took the first bite, would be better if it was molded into the cookie dough layer itself. Then I got their vegan oatmeal cream pie cookie - it was fantastic! It had a similar feeling to Little Debbie's oatmeal cream pies but obviously less of that fake taste. Normally I have a positive experience here but I recently purchased a fruit tart that had mold on it. I came back to get a replacement and the owner immediately asked me if I had left it in my car while scrutinizing my photo and seemed overall upset and did not apologize. All I asked for was a replacement. He even tried to act like it wasn't mold and said it couldn't be. I'm new to the area so when I needed a cake for my husband I googled a bakery near me and Bean Counter was the closest. I was super impressed with their line up of cupcakes, cakes and other pastries. Their cupcakes are huge! Their cheesecake cups are the right amount of cheesecake for one serving or to share. I liked the ambience of the bakery and the line up of products. The employees were helpful, but not super friendly. They also have a coffee menu. It seems like a good well rounded bakery to come for as a daily coffee shop or as a bakery for any celebration need. It's a little dessert haven. I walked in on a Friday afternoon just after 4PM. The clean white walls and the smell of fresh coffee still lingered. At the entrance and around the corner from the counter, there's a hidden seating area with tables lined up. Behind the glass, they have different croissants, crumbs and cupcakes. I got the cannoli cupcake and a raspberry crumb to go. The server at the register was so helpful and patient as I made my selection. The ingredients in both desserts were fresh, especially the cream on the cupcake and the raspberry in the crumb. They weren't too sweet either! The only downside was that although they were considerably sized, most options were made from plain vanilla and chocolate as the base with the regular dessert toppings so there wasn't much of a difference in the flavor options. Also the cupcake was slightly overpriced at around $6, considering it was more cream than cake. Nonetheless, I'll definitely visit again and hopefully try the award winning coffee! read more

The vibes are just right for a visit to a local cafe. This is the second location (the more newer one) in Worcester right off of Grove St. Parking is ample. The vibes are pretty nice too, the music is already Christmas themed and there are plenty of counter space if you need space to lay out your notes and laptop and what not. So overall ambience gets a 5/5 The service was great. The barista was lovely enough to offer her recommendations and also explained the flavoring of the drinks. I tried the Friendly Toast the first time, which has cinnamon honey and vanilla. It was a hot drink that felt comforting and toasty to start those cold mornings. Now, the second item on the menu was the oh so crispy croissant and gooey cheese and bacon. this sandwich was the creme del la creme of breakfast sandwiches. Two eggs cooped inside a buttery croissant with slices of bacon which still makes my mouth water. Only complaint would be that there would be more bacon! Bring on the bacon! You can go for to-go or dine in. I was able to get a spot both times a was here so I favor dining in and having the food while everything is hot. Definitely a chill place and knock some things off your checklist while experiencing delicious foods and coffees. read more

I am reviewing the Bean Counter Bakery Cafe on Highland Street in Worcester which I can't find on here for some reason - only this Grove location comes up. I googled cool coffee shops before I arrived in Worcester because I wanted somewhere fun to hang out. This cafe had a large selection of great-looking baked goods and a large menu of drinks. It was a sparse space with bare walls and tables. Streamlined and cold. I waited in line to place an order and a woman wound up going ahead of me but I waited silently and patiently. There was a second employee who was sweeping in the back who came out to take my order. I asked her about a certain drink on the menu and then I ordered. They weren't closing for over two more hours yet she had such an attitude when I politely ordered. I don't get it. She was really unpleasant. read more

I just love independent bakery shops!!! It's 'our thing' to visit as many as we can and find all the best ones!!!! We don't eat any sweets usually so every weekend we go to a bakery (or ice cream shop in the summer) to buy a sweet treat. The famous Crown Bakery in Worcester used to be one of our favorites to get Swedish pastries and desserts until they retired and sold (that's a whole other story). We were so sad that we wouldn't be able to get anymore of their delicious coffee rings, Semla buns and other yummy treats. Until.... the original owners of Crown Bakery came out of retirement to share their legacy with Bean Counter Bakery!!!! Yay!!!! All the deliciousness of Crown is available there now! I ordered Semla buns the day before I planned on getting them because it is a little bit of a drive for me to get to Bean Counter, thankfully I did because they were out of them by the time we got there. This is a really nice new bakery. They have a lot of cupcakes, pastries, cookies and one separate case of gluten free desserts. They also have a large coffee selection and an area to sit and enjoy your selections. read more

My son & I came to the new Worcester location to pick out cupcakes for my birthday. There were so many flavors it was hard to choose! We settled on oreo, cookie dough, chocolate chip cannoli, and birthday confetti. The cupcakes are massive, I usually cut them in half and enjoy two servings. The new space in Worcester is larger than the Shrewsbury location. It was somewhat sterile with limited seating and decorations, likely due to being new and having covid seating restrictions. It did appear this location had a break-in the night before, the front window was smashed and boarded. Mean people suck. This is a fantastic local bakery that deserves local support. read more

Service here seems a bit slow. First time I visited on a Sunday morning and took a while before I placed my order even though there was no one really in the cafe. I ordered a hot chocolate which was very plain and not sweet at all, so wouldn't order that again. I also ordered something similar to a turnover which was pretty good. I got a white raspberry cupcake for a friend and the cupcakes are huge--a little too big for my taste. Anyways, I decided to pay them a visit again and this time there was absolutely no one in the shop. One employee was on the phone, another was wiping down tables and the owner, I'm assuming walked away from the counter as I was looking at different options. I know they close at seven pm, but it was an hour before close and not one person greeted me or asked if I needed any help. The girl wiping down tables stared at me for a good minute, but proceeded to continue cleaning tables. I have a theory for why I was ignored, but this is poor customer service. Incredible bakery...some pros..some cons, but you have that anywhere when you work through the menu and find the things you like or like better! LOVE the lemon tart..though seems pricy, but maybe that's just the city for ya! cookies are wonderful especially cute offering seasonal changes. One of our MUST STOPS each time we are there. The young woman at the counter that afternoon acted like a stereotypical teenager (even though she was in her 20s), with lots of subtle heavy sighs and looks that screamed "Can you, like, make up your mind already?" Staff was INCREDIBLY RUDE and took my order with such an attitude that it was almost like I was an inconvenience trying to buy something. I never leave reviews and this is actually the first I've ever made but the way I was treated was insane; me and my sister walked in and when we were trying to decide on what to get from the bakery all we got from the store was glaring looks from the staff (mind you we were the only ones in there and they were doing nothing but standing there when we walked in so there was nothing to be inconveniencing about). When I did order I got a chai and that's a whole other story, however when it was time to pay the other girl who didn't take my order was doing the register and she flipped the system over and backed up and just leaned on the back counter it was like she didn't want to have to "deal with me" was the attitude I was getting and WORSE than that the other staff member saw that and she came up to me and said "I'll just take you", like excuse me?? The other girl was 12inches behind her and just STARING AT HER CLOSE ME OUT... NOT DOING ANYTHING! I've never been treated so rudely. I work at a well known cafe and I am a barista and let me tell you I have never treated anyone like that or have seen someone be treated like that. Now to the chai... they put cinnamon in it and filled the cup with so much milk it tasted like I was drinking cinnamon flavored milk. A thick layer of cinnamon settled in my drink. There was no chai and the color looked like straight milk. Chai is my favorite drink and as a BARISTA who makes chai literally everyday, I think I would know that chai does not have cinnamon in it and it doesn't look like milk. We ordered a vegan strawberry snowflake cake for a birthday. On the way home, the cake crumbled. Like the structure of the cake just fell apart. We called the store and within 10 minutes, the owner of the store called us back and made it right. She had a new cake made (albeit a different flavor) and had it delivered to our house in time for the party. Absolutely top notch customer service. She even threw in some vegan cookies. Despite the strawberry snowflake cake crumbling, the taste was amazing. Probably the best tasting vegan cake we've ever had. Nothing says Sunday like a coffee shop - full of busy bees typing up term papers, the smell of fresh ground coffee, and displays of pastries. In terms of aesthetic, Bean Counter is no exception to cozy coffee shop. On this particular Sunday, it was full of people quietly nestled in chairs and working away on laptops. We came in for a quick coffee break after disappointingly driving to a Starbucks that is now out of business. I wish our visit here hadn't been as disappointing. We bought two coffees (an iced salty sailor and a cappuccino) and a fruit tart. The coffees were good but not great. Though I obviously didn't expect it black, the salty sailor ended up being mostly milk and sugar. So I didn't finish it. The fruit tart was the real disappointment. Though stunning and colorful in this photo, it was over after the first bite. It was completely frozen - like couldn't even bite through the strawberries kind of frozen. A fruit tart isn't something one can really warm up in a microwave, so we just had to let it thaw but that's not really on par with a "quick coffee break". Had the tart not been frozen, I'd even have given Bean Counter 4 stars. Seems like a great place to study and hole up with a warm latte. But I couldn't look past that frozen fruit. Ambience: A nice neighborhood bakery and cafe with so many selections of sweets to choose from.
