I love their chocolates! They offer a very unique selection of artfully crafted chocolates. An example of some of the more unique selections are the lavender truffle, the "haiku" (which is a sweet green tea ganache), root beer float, bacon caramel, and so many more. HORRIBLY RUDE and SHADY. I was so excited to hand select truffles and boxes for two of my good friends and went to Beacon Hill Chocolates. I was in the process of gladly paying the outrageous $45 for 2- small boxes (12 pcs total) when my boyfriend and I were asked if we wanted some hot chocolate while we waited. We happily said yes and I was very impressed with the nice holiday gesture UNTIL we got charged $3/pc for the tiny cups. There are no beverage prices posted anywhere in the store. When I mentioned, hey we thought this was complimentary? "We were told that we shouldn't ask for anything we don't want to pay for." Wow, talk about rude. I will not be returning to this shop employed by greedy, rude people. Just say no. read more

I walked in here, saw the prices and nearly walked back out. But, because my birthday as the next day, I stayed, I meandered, I became convinced that just this once, it was ok to spend half my life savings on chocolate, hey it was my birthday. Well....ok, maybe it wasn't really half my life savings and I guess it wasn't technically my birthday either, but, at these prices, unless you are very well off and don't walk out instantly after seeing the tariff, you will also find yourself staring longingly into the display cases at the gorgeous chocolates inside coming up with all sorts of far fetched reasons why it's ok....just this one time.... 24 dollars and 12 chocolates later, I can't say I regret this moment of weakness one iota. I love chocolate. I'm also very picky. Godiva doesn't have enough flavor for me and I always regret it after paying a slightly high price for a Godiva bar in a desperate moment. These chocolates are gorgeous. They look like little pieces of jewelry in a museum behind the glass case. The flavors sound trendy, which made me a little stand offish as well. How many times have I eaten a poorly executed hot pepper dark chocolate? But, I took my chances and had a lot of fun choosing from the many flavors. And then I tried them. Oh. My. God. I can honestly say that I haven't ever tasted anything like these chocolates, which is saying a lot, since I normally eat chocolate every day of my life(seriously). My favorites of the ones I tried were the curry coconut ball and the olive oil sea salt chocolate. The curry coconut one was white chocolate and curry in a small snowball shape coated with coconut. I wasn't sure this would be the best taste or consistency in the world, but wow. Wow. It was amazing. The sea salt olive olive one was just as mind blowing. It was a rich, dense dark chocolate with a sprinkling of sea salt. The most amazing thing about this hot chocolate was that despite the strong chocolate flavor, there was the prominent, concentrated taste of extra virgin olive oil. And somehow, the chocolate wasn't even oily or greasy. I had no idea this was possible and I was very impressed. Apparently, they have a website you can order off of. And honestly, if someone were getting married or had a baby or just got inaugurated as president of the United States I would. In fact, I plan to one day, because they are just that good. All that said however, the prices pain me. Also, if you want to add a fancier, though no larger, looking chocolate to your box, you will be charged almost two dollars extra....for that one piece. These chocolates may be as close to god as I'm ever getting, but at the end of the day, yes, it's still only chocolate. So, sadly, for this I have removed one star. read more

I've both been the bestower, and recipient, of these chocolates. First of all, the taste is unparalleled. I think there's no other place in Boston (even LA Burdick) that come close to the taste and presentation. However, you will pay for this luxury, and the staff is pretty stringent on how many pieces fit into a certain box. (If you get two or three big chocolates that take up a whole 4-piece box, they won't really help you out at all in getting that extra piece in there. Or they will, but will be grumpy about it). I think the 4-piece box was about $10 or $12. The Boston souvenir boxes are pretty, but sooo expensive (if I remember correctly, cost somewhere around $30). Service is hit or miss -- some ladies behind the counter are more friendly and patient than others. But, my family loves receiving (and the boyfriend gave me a huge box of these for my birthday, which gave him some serious brownie points). read more

I bought two boxes of chocolates here, one for our house sitter and one for us. Both boxes made it safely to Maine and then home to Chicago and tasted just as wonderful as the day we bought them. (I know because I decided to sneak a piece right after I purchased them.) The flavors are unique without being unappetizing. I really loved the lemon meringue and the lavender truffle. The root beer flavor wasn't to my favorite, but was still good. The saleswoman was friendly and helped me navigate the many choices they offered. Personally, I think they are a bit pricy. Adorable chocolate shop only blocks from the Charles/MGH T stop. While the chocolate lollipops are great quality (my nephew loved his!) the stuff in the glass case is not so hot. Same story goes for the pick-your-own candy selection. Actually, the more that I think about it, stick with the stuff that is NOT made in-store and you should be all set. Stay away from the miniature ducks and robin's eggs. Neither seem to be made with fantastic quality cacao. Extra points for good service and nice ambiance. It was a new website and I had so many choices, that I forgot to send a message with the gift. Within minutes of my order, I received a response to my E-mail. A very personal friendly reply to all my last minute requests. Paula even helped me select the perfect box, although I had already made the order, she allowed me time to make last minute decisions before shipment. Beautiful shop! Once again an adventure through Boston thanks to our GPS system. Beautiful shop out of a European village. One complaint the coffee was terrible; well it is a chocolate shop after all. I had envisioned a cup of rich and thick hot chocolate but when I saw the automated brew machine my heart sank. I opted for the coffee instead of the chocolate. Sad to say it was probably the worse cup of java I have had here since I arrived. I had a coupon for $20.00 worth of goodies and was treated very respectfully by the clerk. On the positive side, everything I had was good, and the clerk was polite and answered all of the questions that I had. But I can't say that I will be back. The prices are too high. The chocolates were good, but they were not the most amazing chocolates I have ever had. For my certificate, I was able to get 2 chocolate s'more marshmallows, 2 chocolate-covered oreos (those were the best!), 1 chocolate pretzel, and a Vosges Black Salt Caramel bar. I don't understand whether the people who said they had received poor customer service met the two nice, young ladies who were working at BHC when I came in, but I have to say that I feel like I received pretty exceptional customer service. I came in not at all knowing what direction I wanted to go in (in terms of which truffles I wanted), and the young woman who was helping me (auburn hair) came up with some great ideas within the parameters I gave her. On top of that, she was extremely friendly, and we had a nice, very brief back and forth chat while she was packing my boxes. I saw the way that the other young lady was interacting with the other customers, and I'm pretty sure that they also received the same level of respect and service. Maybe I am just spoiled because I have gone to many chocolate shops that make it on location but this place is essentially a middle man of which it's evident you're paying the markups. My friend and I went to a tasting and definitely didn't get our money's worth in chocolate especially since the caramel filled one tasted more like burnt sugar. I am not one to say no to chocolate but I was disappointed. The person leading he tasting didn't have much knowledge of the chocolate making process never mind the individuality of all the different suppliers. I am sure I could have found more things I enjoyed but he didn't have the knowledge to express what might be good for my palette. I don't think I would go back because there are so many other small shops that can cater better to what I am looking for with more insight into the products they sell. read more

This is a great little chocolate shop with a huge selection of artisan chocolates imported from all around the world. They offered a much smaller selection of local chocolates, which is what I was mostly looking for. I ended up picking out a small selection of loose truffles/bonbons from their candy case and grabbed a couple Yes! Chocolate Bars. Although everything was delicious, the Caramel Marshmallow Sushi and Gianduja & Caramel Truffles were my favorites. The prices are a bit high, at about $2.50 - $3 a truffle, but with the price you get an exceptionally high quality product. read more

I agree with an earlier reviewer and wish I had heeded their warning. This place should be called snooty asshole chocolates. I ordered a box of chocolates and a gift card for a friends birthday. They prepared the gift like it was a Christmas gift. When I called to bring this to their attention the women from Beacon Hill Chocolates said in a totally rude tone "I am glad she got her chocolates, what do you want me to do?". I replied "fix it". It was obvious to me that they did not want to correct their mistake so I hung up. I will not be calling back or placing any future orders. read more

These chocolates are amazing, yet spendy. The salted caramel and ice cream cone were my favorites. The woman working wasn't friendliest. When I asked what she recommended she gave me the line about how different people have different taste (no kidding?), but I'm just going to overlook that. I loved these chocolates. This is my first review but I just received a basket sent from this boutique as a gift and it is just lovely. I received it safely packed away in a box lined with ice-packs to ensure that none of the pieces were melted or damaged in anyway. The actual basket is gorgeous and the chocolate is to die for. I am in love with the caramel sushi and cannot wait to get to Boston so that I can see this shop for myself. French Macarons: they were a little chewy and sticky to the teeth. The egg shell like crust was perfect but the inner layer was not light and airy enough. The filling/ganache in the center was a bit too sweet but very smooth and was true to the intended flavor. I walked into this store for the first time yesterday and it was the most unique chocolatier experience I've witnessed in Boston thus far!! The employees are incredibly kind, patient, and willing to answer all your chocolate questions. They have choices between beautiful, standard gift boxes, and more memorable keepsake chocolate boxes that have a unique Victorian theme to them and are based on postcards preserved by the Boston Public Library that the store has exclusive rights to that you cannot get anywhere else! The designs are absolutely wonderful, charming, and for any occasion. The chocolates alone that you can choose from to go in the boxes are too pretty to eat. They are handpicked by the owner from places in France and Belgium. The price is worth it! This would make a wonderful gift to a loved one and would support a truly unique Boston business that deserves all the praise they can get. read more

My grandson, and I were walking a long Charles street last Saturday, and I saw this tasteful chocolates store. We danced my way in, and was greeted by a short dark haired girl with beautiful big earrings. She was very nice, and she was very helpful. She had all these suggestion for chocolate ( which was great because there is so many tasty ones to choose from). Another thing that was great, was that my grandson and I were speaking Swedish to one another, and the girl knew what we were saying! So disappointed. I hadn't been to BHC in about 2 years, but once back in Boston I couldn't wait to get some of their world-famous chocolate/caramel/marshmallow "sushi rolls". Unfortunately, they were no where near as good as I remembered. The rolls looked sloppy and tasted stale. They were crooked, different sizes, and the marshmallow was broken/crackled on top -- just unappetizing -- looked like a child made them. We stopped by this chocolate shop the week prior to Easter, because we wanted to mail both of our daughters who are away at college, some cute little baskets to celebrate the holiday. So glad we saw the many positive reviews, and bought a couple of their handmade boxes with beautifully painted pieces of chocolate! We went with a variety of types, including their Energizer Bunny, adorable chick, the lemon and raspberry ladybugs, and dragon fly, along with the old faves, like the cappuccino cup, Italia espresso, haiku sweet green tea, caramel sushi, and port wine fig. We ended up getting 12 pieces per box, and spent well over $100, only because we also bought a couple of long-eared bunnies and assorted chocolate bars to round out the goodie baskets. Despite it being pretty darn expensive, our girls said that the presentation and taste was unbelievably impressive! They tried their best to savor each bite, by just allowing themselves two pieces per serving, but their good intentions went right out the window, once they sampled the first piece. I think they finished their boxes within a day or two, and had no regrets in doing so! Beacon Hill Chocolates is the place to go, when you want to make a great impression, and show someone you really care.
