I am building an outdoor kitchen and i was looking to buy a grill and other items. I stopped today at the tempe store where i was still having doubts on what to get. I was helped mainly by JT, He was knowledgable, patient and courteous. I ended up buying an Alfresco grill, JT made it very easy for me to make the decision. They also had cooked some beef ribs and they gave me some, it was delicious. I need to go back there to buy more items i need. read more

I was not happy with my experience in this store at all. My first thought was WOW, over priced! But then, for a small specialty/niche store higher prices are not unexpected. And, as a novice BBQer, I really wanted to check this store out to see what they had. Or, is this a place that could help me develop a new hobby/passion? My answer after 10 minutes or so was NO. Again, I thought they were highly over priced-on everything. From rubs to your smallest accessories, I thought they were really milking it-and that I would go to other stores to buy such products. I mean really, in this economy, who has money to burn (no pun intended in a BBQ shop)? But it was my interaction with the senior most appearing member of the shop that really turned me off. My wife and I were in around closing time, and with a few minutes before closing, this older looking guy walks up very close to us with a look like, "CAN I HELP YOU-NOW?" My wife guessed he was noticing it was close to closing and greeted him. I explained my place in the market-trying to use a gas grill to experiment with smoking. He poo-pooed everything I had to say and gave me the impression that if you weren't there to spend over 500 dollars, the most you were going to get was "smoke flavor." Isn't that what smoking was all about? His behavior IMHO was dismissive and gave me the impression "It's closing time!" So we left-thinking they don't need our money and we don't want to go back. read more

on 2/3/14 I came in to get some expert advice on the Memphis Pros vs Mak Generals pellet grills. However, I spent an entire hour in there with no help at all trying to figure out things for myself. Somebody was working on a built-in grill so I asked him if I could see a Mak 2 star, but he said simply, "We dont have any of those now". Ok, that is fine. So when are you going to get some in? Can't you place one on backorder? If I am interested in buying, wouldn't the owner of this company want someone to be proactively helping me? Anyways, he didnt do any of this and went back to working on one of the grills. The other rep on the floor seemed mostly interested in sharing BBQ stories with someone that came in to just talk. I patiently waited with my son for that client to finish buying his rub. Then someone else started hanging out and just chatting with the sales rep again. All I needed was basic customer service; someone to ask what I wanted and that they would be with me in "x" minutes. The last thing you want to do as a customer is pull teeth to get someone to help you that never made any effort to help you from the start. They do have a great selection, and some incredible grills that you can't see anywhere else in the city. However, within that 1 hour, I could've been informed and bought the pellet grill of my choice. I will bring my business somewhere else where I dont have to waste my time read more

Possibly the best place in the Phoenix area where you can by virtually all level of smokers, pellet grills, high end BBQ island components, fireplace components and accessories. I've found Mike, the owner, and his team to be very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. I just purchased a Pellet Grill from them, late in the day on Sunday. Steve, the manager, made sure that the grill was delivered to my home the same day. Great service! Absolute customer service nightmare with employees who think they don't need coaching to do their jobs. Constantly following up with them to find out if they will do something. I KNOW most of these positive reviews are fake just like a few other users commented. The attitudes of the employees are self righteous, rude and quick to temper when things get out of THEIR control. I ordered the bull 7 grill WITH integrated smoker box Part Number: 28369 online ($4200.00 and some change after delivery); the smoker box is in the third item listed in the product details list on their own website. I took screen shots in case they go back and try to "fix" it later. Two weeks later I'm still waiting for the delivery and I check their website and it says "in stock", so I called the store and they said they would call me back after they had a chance to look into it. Later that day they called me back to say oh my its scheduled for delivery tomorrow how about that huh!? Yeah how about that, what a coincidence. They deliver the box and I signed for it with a delivery driver who didn't care to pull this thing out of the street until I asked him to, yeah he was going to dump it off in the street. When I opened up the box in my back yard the next day, and started assembling it, that is when I noticed; no integrated smoker box. I call the office but the person who handles internet orders is out of office until Monday so I leave my number for a call back to me. Monday comes and I got a voicemail explaining to me about the delivery drivers name and that I signed for the delivery. That got me upset, they are already blaming me. I called later that day to speak to this person and the first thing out of her mouth is "but you signed for it." That is what made me blow up and I asked her if she was blaming me? She said no I'm just thinking out loud. How was I supposed to know what is in the box until I open it? She replied you'd know because the description is on the side of the box. Well Ms. you should not think out loud like that to a customer so this is coaching for you. "I DO NOT NEED COACHING TO DO MY JOB! I'll have my manager call you back and deal with this, I'm done!" CLICK. Yup. A teen walking into a Porsche dealership asking to test drive a 911 is the exact treatment you'll receive as soon as they make a mistake. All I want is for them to give me the correct unit I thought I was ordering. At this time I'm still waiting for the "manager" to call me back, I wonder if they will make this right or is it all out war over an integrated smoker box mix-up? Finding a store that knows the difference between "barbecuing" and "grilling" is hard enough, but finding one that can talk intelligently about both is a rare find indeed. BBQ Island is one of those stores. Customer service can be occasionally spotty, but usually the staff is very helpful and friendly and always knowledgeable. They have a wide range of products, most of which you can normally only find online. An especially good resource for wood pellets. Overall, a great store and good people. read more

Not only do they have the most amazing selection of BBQ rubs, sauces, tools, grills and smokers but the staff is very knowledgeable and willing to help in any way. Please be careful when buying products from this company. They sell products that have been discontinued for over a year and after 5 years you can no longer get the parts for the grill. Also when they sell Built in Grills they give you a rubber hose to hook up the grill to the propane tank. My hose melted through and caused a major fire which they tried blaming everyone from me to the installer of the grill. They would not replace the grill or talk with Bull and let them know what caused the problem. I spoke with Bull directly and they replaced the grill in a matter of weeks. We went 3 months without a grill because they were dragging their feet and giving Bull incorrect information. PLEASE BEWARE! read more

I noticed BBQ Island on my last trip to Phoenix. I am going to make it a required stop from now on. They have the knowledge and the store is well stocked with supplies. I can't say I'm too impressed with this place. They have a great selection and I would say their prices are comparable to other specialty bbq stores, non of which are cheap. I had visited their website first shopping for an outdoor refrigerator. I found one on their site for about $350. They had the same one in the store just with a different style door handle. It didn't have a price on it so I asked the gentleman at the counter. Without looking at it he said it was $1000. Puzzled I told him that I think we're talking about two different units, since the one next to the one I was looking at was marked at $1000. When I pointed out the one out I was looking at he said, yeah it's $1000 since its stainless. When I showed him the one I was looking at on their website from my phone, which was the same model with just a different door handle, he suggested I just buy it online. Well I did buy it elsewhere, but it wasn't online or at their store. This store may be for some people, but their customer service lacks in my opinion. They lost a possible sale that day and a potential future customer. read more
