On the side was refried beans with cheese and some delicious fried potatoes, I should've taken a picture. It was a little pricey, but definitely enough for two unless you have a really big appetite. I'm writing this review because I don't understand why the reviews are not better for this place. The food is so good! Pink salmon was now a brownish color and a not appealing texture. And potatoes were still not crispy. Frustrating experience.

This spot came up, and although my wife and I have driven past it many times, we've never stopped in. Today, I decided to finally give it a try. After looking through the Google photos, I changed my mind and ordered a breakfast plate instead of a sandwich. Parking was a little challenging. I arrived around 11:00 a.m. and had to circle the block a few times before finding a spot directly in front of the diner. When I walked in, I wasn't sure whether I should seat myself or wait to be seated. All of the waitresses appeared busy, so I stood near the entrance. Once she was available, Marianna greeted me. Initially, I wasn't a fan of being asked whether I was picking up food rather than whether I was dining in or taking out, but I quickly realized they may be accustomed to regular customers who already know the process. Since it was my first visit, I explained that I wasn't sure if I should seat myself. Personally, I think a sign near the entrance would be helpful for first-time guests. Since I was dining alone, I chose a seat at the counter and ordered the Sugar Plum Special with cheese grits and sourdough toast. While waiting for my food, I noticed something that concerned me. The staff did not appear to be wearing gloves, and I observed food being handled after touching various surfaces, including condiments, plates, glasses, and trash areas. While I understand that food service relies heavily on proper handwashing practices, I personally felt uncomfortable watching bread being handled directly by hand. I requested that my toast be handled with a utensil instead, and my request was accommodated without issue. When my food arrived, my eggs were cooked exactly as requested--scrambled hard--and the bacon was perfectly crispy. The bacon was a little saltier than I personally prefer, but that's more about my taste than the preparation. Overall, both items were flavorful. Now, let's talk about the grits. I come from a strong Southern background, and we take our grits seriously. The presentation was fantastic. The butter melting on top and the cheese looked absolutely perfect. Unfortunately, the texture wasn't there on the first serving. The grits were noticeably gritty and undercooked. After a couple of bites, I sent them back and requested they be cooked a bit longer. One of the waitresses explained that customers typically need to request the grits "well done." That was surprising to me because I've always believed grits should naturally be cooked until smooth and creamy. In my opinion, that's how they're meant to be served. Thankfully, the second batch was much better. While they still could have been stirred a bit more, the texture improved significantly and was much closer to what I expected. I also want to recognize Marianna for her excellent service. She was accommodating, attentive, and handled my concerns professionally throughout the meal. Overall, I would return. The restaurant has a warm, family-oriented atmosphere and an old-school diner feel that is becoming harder to find these days. It reminded me of the kind of place you'd visit after church on a Sunday morning or somewhere you'd go with your grandparents for a comforting home-cooked meal. While there were a few areas that could be improved, the welcoming environment and friendly service left a positive impression on me.

I think to make your CFS taste great, the gravy has to match that energy, and it did! There is sausage in the gravy, but its like bits of sausage smashed down to the perfect bits of sausage with gravy ratio frls. Overall: 10/10 I think if they continue to make their gravy perfectly and the portions enough to make you perfectly full, this place is going to be better than great. We will be coming here and we will be trying everything on their menu.

There were some new items I came across, so I had my work cut out to limit my newfound desires. Ultimately, we ordered a few appetizers and some entrees, although some served cross purposes! We started with some boneless Ancho BBQ wings, truffle fries, onion ring tower, cheese curds, and then moved on to chicken nachos, a couple of kids' pepperoni pizzas, a shiitake garlic noodles, a Gardein adult mac 'n' cheese, and a BBQ bacon burger. The apps are quite large here, more so than I expected, and the cheese curds were a favorite along with the wings. The onion rings disappeared as well, but the consensus was they weren't up to Red Robin quality; they were good, just different with the parmesan. The truffle fries were garlicky, which I loved, and shiitake garlic noodles, although listed as an app, were my entree, and they were amazing! Very tasty, with lots of mushrooms and a garlic presence that was not overpowering. Would definitely get it again! The Gardein mac 'n' cheese was large as well, with lots of Gardein chicken in almost every bite. But the nachos - they were enormous! So big that the guy who ordered them didn't even try his BBQ bacon burger; that went home for a later meal! And the kids' pepperoni pizzas were also large, and with fries, were easily an adult meal as well. And we took home almost a whole pizza! A gem in my backyard. This is good ol' homey food from locals of Concord, serving to the community. It's fun to go in here, especially on the weekends when its packed. All kinds of people go here...seniors, born and raised in Concord folks, adorable couples, families with their kids, the church crowd and even hipsters! I feel like I usually run into one random person I know that I never knew came here. My favorite is the delicious french toast, country potatoes and coffee with the Chronicle's datebook section next to me. But its also a toss up with the banana waffle, its a beligian waffle, thick and fluffy and I can never get enough! My husband loves the corned beef hash, he says its just the way the Irish would make it (he would know, he's Irish). PS. To Geneve (from below), what's she smokin'? No restaurant has their own personal butcher for you. "Everything look tasted store bought" -- well where else do you expect to get your food, hunny? Dear Bay Leaf Cafe, I LOVE YOU! After visiting this restaurant i fell in love, everything about it is good, and i was quite surprised at some of the bad reviews given here, in particular one.. i have been going to bay leaf for awhile now and have never been disappointed. Yes at times service may be slow on weekends, but very understandable since it is so small and packed, but i still enjoy it very much. the breakfast is very good, and very big in portions, i never finish a plate! they have a good range of food and fruit is always fresh, and coffee is always wonderful. the lunch is also very good, especially the fries, always crispy and delicious. if you are looking for a good breakfast or lunch place, please go here. there is no where else that will give you great food, and a good atmosphere, and service. don't pass up the chance. read more

During my recent visit to Bay Leaf, I experienced a significant disappointment. The waitress made an error by charging my credit card multiple times for a single transaction. After noticing the repeated charges, I promptly contacted the restaurant for assistance. Unfortunately, the person I spoke to initially stated that no help was available. Subsequently, she assured me that someone would return my call noting that she would take down my name and number, but unexpectedly hung up instead. This situation has led me to initiate a dispute for this transaction through my bank. The evident lack of accountability and attention to customer care displayed by the restaurant is simply unacceptable. Adding to my disappointment, the quality of the food was merely satisfactory, far from sufficient to justify the inconvenience I am now facing. read more

I am so glad to have found this restaurant,! I had the most tasty omelet that I have ever had, I am a super picky eater and my server let me know that I could put whatever I wanted in the omelet, and it was HUGE, I also got the fruit it was so fresh and yummy, also in a really big portion they even let me have a pancake instead of toast how cool is that! My husband ate the eggs benedict and had the hash browns he was also thoroughly impressed, this was the first visit but defiantly not the last I plan on coming here quite often now that I found it. On top of the food being fab. their service was also great my coffee was filled often and the girls that worked there were all super friendly. Only place in Concord and the surrounding towns you can get an amazingly good breakfast! I swear it's that good and the fact that it's not a chain is a definite plus. And hey, you can order whatever looks best and modify it to your taste. I have to add that everyone at the Bay Leaf tries so hard to make you happy, you can really tell that they care and are sincere. I agree that the service can get a bit slow on the weekends seeing as they get pretty packed at the peak hours but I also think the servers aren't drones...looks like they're trying their hardest. read more

My favorite breakfast spot in Concord! The service is always warm, friendly & accomadating. They get really busy on the weekends, but there's a reason why everyone goes there. It's a diamond in the rough! A small cafe with big flavors. The omlettes are the most amazing thing there next to their pancakes.
