Restaurants like the Bay Leaf Cafe are the reason why I love supporting and frequenting local family owned businesses. I came to Bay Leaf on a rainy Wednesday morning before my Doctor's appointment. I almost never get an opportunity to have a nice breakfast during the week because like most other people, I work an 8 to 5 shift during the day. When I scheduled my appointment for 10:30 am, I had to take advantage of the extra time that I had available. I decided to treat myself to breakfast. I've had this place bookmarked for a while, and I decided to try it out since it was right down the street from my new Doctor's office. I found a great parking spot right across the street from the restaurant. When I arrived, I was greeted promptly by Zakia, the business Owner. She was very sweet and courteous and she immediately asked me if I wanted a cup of coffee. I don't drink coffee so I refused, but I glanced over the menus that she gave me for a few minutes before I decided on what I would order. They offer breakfast and lunch and I found myself looking over the entire menu out of curiosity. They have a pretty extensive breakfast menu for such a cozy little place, but what I was excited about was the $7 weekday breakfast specials. Go ahead... call me a penny pincher. But, I LOVE being able to have a nice meal at a discounted price. They have about 5 different $7 weekday breakfast specials to choose from that range from egg dishes to pancakes and French toast. I was craving for carbs, so I decided to go with the French toast special which comes with a slice of French toast, 2 eggs any style, and a side of sausage or bacon (I chose the bacon this time). While I waited for my meal to arrive, I looked around and scoped out the facility. I felt so comfortable there, like I was sitting at the dinner table in someone's home. The whole design and setup makes you feel at ease. This place has a homey type of feel to it and the decor is definitely indicative of that. Before I knew it, my breakfast was ready! I asked Zakia to bring my glass of milk with my meal, which she did accordingly. This is such a small detail, but I was so happy to have a large glass of milk! You wouldn't believe how many breakfast places skimp on this but then have the nerve to charge upwards of $3 for it. I started eating my breakfast and I was pleasantly surprised. The French toast was hot and fluffy, eggs were cooked just right, and the bacon was nice and crispy. I think it took me all of 10 minutes to finish this meal. I was hungry and it was so good, so I scarfed that bad boy down with no regard. I struck up a nice conversation with Zakia when I was finished. I thanked her for the meal and for the fantastic customer service! When I was ready to pay, she brought over a portable debit card machine and I was thoroughly impressed! Not a lot of small businesses are on par with today's new technology... especially when it comes to payment machines. I'm often surprised at how many restaurants are still operating as cash only. When I was leaving, I noticed that a few more people had come in and sat down to eat breakfast. I missed the morning rush, which was great for me because I had an appointment to get to. I can't wait to try Bay Leaf out for lunch one day! This place has been opened since 1999, so you know that they are doing something right! The person who served us has a big time attitude problem. I asked her if they had turkey bacon, she started laughing, what the heck is so funny. Then when we asked her for spinach on the side we had to repeat ourselves over and over. Going on to the food, the three people who were with me enjoyed the food where as I had ordered tuna sandwich and potato salad. The tuna was really bad, it did not taste good. I ate it coz we paid for it, but it was not good. Worst tuna sandwich I have eaten. Iam giving you a five star because I know stars mean alot on Yelp and can hurt a business. I love this place for breakfast. My favorite is Joe's Special. I always stop here after appointments downtown, and any other excuse. They have had outdoor seating for quite a few years, it's nice to sit outside enjoying the sun, but protected by trees, very peaceful. Patty was my favorite server, attentive, kind. I was really taken aback by her sudden passing. I will miss her presence a lot. One day, I came by an hour before closing (beginning of Covid), the cooks had been sent home, and they closed early because it was so slow(things were unstable then, everywhere). Patty was ready to go cook the breakfast for me herself, but the grill had been shut down. She said she felt so bad because I was a regular customer. I had ordered the Bacon, Avocado, spinach omelet with Whole-wheat toast. It was quite a decent sized omelet served with either Hash browns or potatoes. I chose the hash browns and needles to say I was full and could barely finish everything on the plate. The people are nice here and perfect place to grab a quick breakfast or lunch. Food was cooked and packed ready to go, and a gentleman walks by and tells the cashier that he incorrectly charged me, and needs to charge me two dollars for the strawberries on the waffles and cheese on the eggs. So I charge my card for an additional two dollars for the cheese on the eggs and strawberries. ( ridiculous right). That told me a lot about how they operate. (There's a guy running around ensuring that the customer(s) are being charged correctly). That's right, two freaking dollars. Anyways, the food was delicious. And fulfilling. I will return. Today, however, DH and I were looking for a new spot for breakfast and decided to give Bay Leaf a try. Pleasant atmosphere. The outdoor seating features black wrought iron furniture, a bright orange umbrella, and some planter boxes full of colorful flowers. Very inviting. However, we chose to sit inside. Better decor than I expected. A cut above the diner type of restaurant. The breakfast specials were well priced. I had two scrambled eggs, a slice of french toast, and a slice of ham. DH opted for two eggs, hash browns, ham, and toast. The hash browns looked golden, not burned. And his very dark, dry toast came as ordered. Coffee was okay. It would have been better if real cream and not dairy creamer was offered. Service was friendly, but a tad slow. Perhaps that was to be expected as the restaurant was busy on a mid-morning weekday. I knew that my mom and her lady friends have been meeting here for breakfast Saturday mornings* so, naturally, I decided to infiltrate. After all, this restaurant is walking distance from our house but I had never been. They have lots of breakfast/brunch options but I decided to keep it simple with the "traditional breakfast" which include two eggs (I went with sunny side up), toast (I asked for dry wheat), hash browns (I subbed fruit) and a meat of your choice (bacon!). For $8, it was a generous amount of food. (I ended up taking half the toast and most of fruit, plus my mom's extra bacon, home to my honey.) The food was also all cooked perfectly. For the fruit, I was expecting the all-too-standard, slighty-sad fruit salad but I was pleased that the fruit was super fresh and closer to its whole form (i.e., big slices of honeydew, cantaloupe, and orange). Really nice older place. It was quite crowded when we went. It was seat yourself. The waitress brought menus and tgen kinda disappeared. It was understandable because it was only 2 of them. A different lady came to take our drink orders. Thwy brought my mother in law oj but never brought my ice tea. The firat waitress took our food order. The wait timw for food was thw downfall.
