This place has everything you need to start your culinary journey into Thai cooking. It's located in a busy area. Parking here is tough, there's meters but its not a nice neighborhood, lots of shady characters about. I went during the day & after going around a couple of times found a meter in front. They speak English & offer help if you tell them what you need. They don't want any photography inside, I think it's because they have a collection of every bootleg Thai movie covering one wall. But over all they carry fresh Thai items that are hard to find. I bought fresh Thai basil, galangal, chilies & lemongrass. I'm happy I found this place. Happy Yelping!

Amazing Khmer market with hard to find SE Asian ingredients like finger root and fresh mint.

The waiters and waitresses are very welcoming and inviting. They showed effort in wanting to get to know their guests and create a conversation to get comfortable. They offered explanations of the items menu and gave recommendations of their most popular ones. Because of them, we started off with the mango salad, which is a great start to the meal as a mango-fan. Everything else that we ordered, including the roasted duck, the sautéed eggplant and the baked amok was absolutely delicious. I would return to this restaurant again.

We were seated pretty quickly around this time and the waiters/waitresses were really kind and happy to give us recommendations. Ambience: inside of the restaurant itself is pretty elegant and is a on the more aesthetically dark side. Otherwise, not a very noisy restaurant at all and great for tableside conversation. Service: Also great as well! Our waitress (I couldn't catch her name) was amazing and knew the menu well to give us recommendations for the night with a good combination of different types of flavors to try out for the dinner. They had a very well staffed waiter-to-table ratio on a Friday evening for dinner. Food: I really liked the food a lot! I say this as someone who grew up in a Vietnamese household, with some Cambodian dishes from my close relatives. Some of the items that we ordered included: - The Green Mango Salad: which I really, really liked more than I was expecting. - The Phenom Penh Roast Duck: which was really soft and tender (probably the softest duck I've ever had) and was not chewy. One of the few places that I think have gotten duck to my preference. - The Baked Amok: which is a national Cambodian dish and is full of seafood. Also recommend ordering this. - Eggplant with Beef: also a great highlight; while the dish name features the eggplant as the main focus, I think the dish ended up more beef focused more than the eggplant. The only other comment that might be worth mentioning is that it might not have some of the authentic notes of Cambodian food (coming from my Cambodian father)--possibly because some of the authenticity factors are a very acquired taste that many American palates may not find favorable. But as it stands, it's a true Cambodian in America experience that captures the soul more than any place I've ever been. Overall, really great place that I'll be recommending some of my other friends to try out.

This place is incredibly easy to miss unless you're intentionally looking for it. I've gone past it…read moreso many times without a clue this establishment was even there. I loved the ambiance of the place, it was so cozy, warm and relaxing. The music they were playing matched perfectly with the vibe and aesthetics of the place, it was soft and romantic in a way. There are plenty of tables available for groups or solo dates. This is a perfect place to sit down and journal or get some work done. I literally only waited 10 minutes from start to finish to get my takeout, I sat down on one of the available tables and immediately started reading my Bible app, truly relaxing. Half of the tablets were occupied but everyone appeared to be relaxed and just enjoying their meals so the noise level was low. If you're waiting for takeout they give you a ticket and then bring your takeout to the table you're at. If you ordered in advance for a pick up you just walk to the counter and they hand over your food. The staff were friendly and graceful. While I was ordering my food at the counter, I was able to see the staff handling some of the food. They were plating, and I was pleasantly surprised with the fact that all of them were wearing gloves even while they were taking the prepared food to the tables. You get 5% off your bill if you pay with cash. There are no atms inside. Now let's talk about the actual food, the star of the show. I ordered the claypot braised pork belly and I was notttt disappointed! This meal was such a unique experience. I am used to eating very flavorful and well seasoned dishes overall so I've tasted plenty of dishes that had more flavor than this. However, I have never enjoyed a dish that was so intentional with all of its textures and tastes. The rice was soft and light, and the vegetables had the perfect amount of crunch and spice, while the pork had a mild sweetness to it. The egg was a perfect add on to put it all together. This is the kind of plate that you have to truly eat everything it's served with to fully enjoy all of the different textures and flavors that it brings. If any of the spices or flavors would've been overwhelming, it would take away from the other flavors every item on the plate has to offer. I put a little of everything with each bite, yummm. The only flaw with the dish unfortunately is that the larger portions of the pork were chewy and a bit dry, which based on other reviews seems to be a thing. The smaller pieces were very tender and delicious. I will definitely order again from here. I'm excited to try their homemade soda, coffees and their summer/spring roles Happy yelping and enjoy

( https://www.instagram.com/p/DQF8Gzekcks/ ). It is a shame because, besides myself, I know a few people that aren't in the neighborhood that travel regularly to G&L. Also its surprising because every time I go the place is pretty packed and occasionally there is a wait. What's also a shame, for me, is that on my recent visit my friend ordered the Steamed Seafood in Lemongrass and this is perhaps the top, or one of the top dishes on the menu. The seafood flavors and balances the slightly spicy lemongrass broth making this a crave worthy bowl. I ordered something out of my wheelhouse - the Coconut Spicy Lemongrass Soup, which on online order menu states its a popular dish. I couldn't see why this dish is so popular because I find other items on the menu superior. They make a tasty pho (especially when paired with a marrow bone). Their sandwiches are well made - I enjoy the different fish ones. I think their Vietnamese coffee could use some work - it is blander than other versions I had tried. Don't be too sad and maybe feel a little optimistic because owner Petra Rickman has a great track record opening interesting, in demand restaurants (This one and Taco Azul have been longtime go-tos in Whitestone). Additionally G&L has a 2nd location with the same menu in Manhattan, which unfortunately for a Queens boy like myself is a bridge too far and a congestion pricing too high for me to make the trek.

I grew up eating here and over the decades, the food has been consistently delicious. The portion size and price didn't exactly remain the same, but I don't blame them with inflation. Here are a few dishes to try if it's your first time (or even if you already have a go-to but want to experiment): Fish dumpling noodle soup - Your choice of egg noodle or flat noodles. I like the egg noodle with it. The fish dumpling is most likely made in house since I've never seen these dumplings elsewhere, not even in other Chinese-Vietnamese restaurants. The dumpling isn't too fishy and the broth is addicting (think wonton mein broth but better). A few drops of sirarcha can really elevate it. Beef belly noodle soup - Again, your choice of noodles. The beef belly is tender but the best thing about this dish is the soup. It's kind of like borscht soup but more savory. It's tangy, tomato-y, and deeply flavorful. I don't usually order beef belly but whenever I'm craving this soup, I'll get it. You can also choose beef tendons instead of beef belly. Teochew duck - Although it's a fusion Chinese-Vietnamese eatery, there's a strong focus on Teochew cuisine here. Teochew is a type of regional Chinese food. The duck you'll find here tastes different from the roast duck at your regular schmegular Chinese restaurant. It's less crispy, meat is softer, and more dependent on the sauce that it comes with. Squid - The orange squid here is so delightfully chewy and seafoody. My family likes to get this to go as a side dish for dinner.

I went to this moderately fancy, pretty popular Pan-Asian spot with one of my groups a while back,…read morewhere, as usual, we split a lot of main dishes. They are a sister restaurant to the even fancier Chinese Tuxedo, with a menu that leans primarily towards ASEAN/Southeast Asian countries. The place was slightly loud and somewhat dim for photos, but thankfully, we were in a separate room, so the noise was muffled. The food was overall pretty good, though I prefer some other spots. This is especially given the price point, but it is nice to have solid representations of food from many different countries. To drink, I remember not being in the mood for a cocktail, so I went for the $14 Fiery Forge with Pathfinder hemp spirit, Lyre's Italian orange, pineapple, five spice, and pomelo soda. It had mild spices and a lot of citrus, and it was decent. The first dish that arrived happened to be the best, the $38 Crispy Lamb Ribs with a Cambodian sweet & sour sauce. The ribs were crispy on the outside while remaining very tender inside, with the fat properly cooked as well. I was also happy that they weren't overly sweet either. This was very tasty and one of our easy favorites. The Roasted Duck Breast for $32 with Chinese celery, Thai basil, dragon eye fruit, and plum dressing was also solid. The duck was cooked nicely, being tender with a mildly fatty texture, and the dressing was thankfully not overly sweet. I do wish there was a bit more dragon eye fruit/longan, but it was solid. Also tasty, but the most expensive, was the 'Crying Tiger' Grilled Sirloin Steak for $46 with aromatic herbs, spicy tamarind dressing, and toasted rice. I have had this dish, also known as Suea rong hai, in many Isan/northeastern Thai spots, and this was solid. The steak was cooked nicely, and the dressing had a mild kick, with some roasted chilis for those who want a bit more heat. My only complaint is that I wish this were also served, as per usual, with sticky rice, as it's already a pricey version of this dish, and even cheaper places serve this traditional accompaniment. The Newton Circus Sambal Stingray, for $28, with roasted skate and sambal belachan, was alright. It was comparable to most Malaysian and Singaporean spots serving this dish, though I preferred a slightly stronger sambal at some spots, and the fish was cooked better at others. The portion size was also daintier, although at least we didn't have to deal with the fish bones. For a better version at a reasonable price, I highly recommend Wok Wok nearby, on Mott Street near Confucius Square. Last and least was the Singaporean Chili Crab Fried Rice for $28 with hand-picked Jonah crab and lobster oil. This is famous here, and I don't really see it. I liked the fried rice's seasoning and crunch. However, the sweet chili sauce overpowered whatever little crab there was. For a similar price, I would recommend the nearby Phoenix Palace, which had more crab flavor and was more balanced. The food overall was good. If this were in another neighborhood, I would probably recommend it more, but there are other spots for ASEAN food that are a bit more reasonably priced and of better quality. It's still good, though, and certainly better than many other Pan-Asian places. This would be another 3.5, but that doesn't exist, so I'll round up.
