Delightful, a surprisingly good find... after my son's appt at the Morgan Stanley Children Hospital... we grabbed dinner here. Although it looked really dark.. and a bit sketchy... once you're seated, not bad. The bathroom is clean. Service is nice & friendly. The online outfit got my address wrong. The delivery took at least an hour. When the food arrived the noodles were all congealed and I had to throw most of them out. I was recommended this place by a fellow grad student in my lab. It's a small cozy restaurant and has friendly staff. They have a lunch special where you can get a spring roll or soup along with an entree. I chose to get a spring roll and chicken pad thai. The spring roll was lukewarm when it was brought to me, I wish it was piping hot from the fryer, but it was still good. To me, the pad thai looked browner in color than pad thai that I'm used to eating. I feel like the pad thai I've had before was less brown and more orange idk. Also I initially felt like the portion size was small, however I was sorely mistaken because I was FULL after finishing this. Very heavy, I was very happy and full from eating the small bowl of pad thai. Overall, solid lunch place near my workplace so I can't complain. But as soon as any white person would be ordering at the same time as me their whole demeanor would change. We have been coming to rain over the span of about 6 months now and I must say it's a neighborhood gem. For one they have a killer happy hour, drinks are typically $6-$8 depending. I would recommend the rum punch or the mojito. The chicken dishes are delicious but the star of the show here is the duck. Get the crispy roasted duck which comes in a coconut pineapple curry tasting sauce. The wife always gets the bangcock fried chicken which comes with fried rice. She ordered the salmon mango once which she wasn't too fond of and since then she sticks with the Bangkok fried chicken lol. Definitely not my favorite Thai place in the area. Their prices are higher than surrounding Thai places for the same dishes, especially the lunch specials. I've gotten their drunken noodle before and it's good but nothing outstanding that's worth paying extra bucks for. Most recently I got the grilled pork chop lunch. The pork was on the drier side. But the side sauce helped with that a little. I did appreciate all the veggies that came with it though. The shrimp soup was pretty good, and well seasoned. OK. So I tried this place based on suggestions form locals that I was working with. I asked for Thai and Rain was the first place they mentioned. I was super excited to try it. I called and placed my order. The lady on the phone was super nice. They delivered to my job which was a major plus. I ordered Tofu Drunken noodle and since it was lunch time, it came with 2 spring rolls and I also ordered the grilled eggplant. I asked for Thai iced tea, but they were out. So the drunken noodle was ok at best. I wasn't really impressed at all. I was a little on the greasy side and could have had more flavor. The eggplant was not was I was expecting, but I liked it a lot. The serving size was small compared to the price. Overall, my experience with Rain was just ok. Nothing more, nothing less. Not impressed with this basic Thai. I decided to grab lunch at Rain II based on the number of positive reviews because I was doing field work this morning in Washington Heights. Starved after last night's disaster at Bunz Harlem, I walked the two blocks from the clinic I'm working in, over to Rain II. I ordered at the bar (which didn't appear to have alcohol, just water glasses) and waited approximately 15 minutes for a Shrimp Clay Pot and Shrimp/Chicken shumai to go. Shumai were so...meh. Incredibly bland, the dipping sauce added no additional flavor, and there were only four pieces in this $6 order. Clay pot filled with glass noodles and four jumbo shrimp. The shrimp were just boiled, zero seasoning and the glass noodles were mixed with fresh ginger-a nice touch, but there was little else to win me over here. The ambience was really nice inside, but I certainly wouldn't return after spending a total of $23.95 and throwing most of it in the trash. I lie--I fed my work wife. read more

You wouldn't expect to find this hidden gem amongst the Dominican jungle of Washington Heights. At first glance, from the outside it appears to be a lounge or night spot. Upon entering you are amazed by the glamours decor of wooden panels and glass chandeliers. It's a cozy and intimate setting. The servers are friendly and served us water and handed us the menu immediately upon entering. We ordered calamari as an appetizer which was deliciously crunchy and came with sweet and spicy gingery sauce (for those who don't like marinara sauce). For our entrees I ordered Pad Prik King with shrimp. I usually order shrimp pad Thai, but wanted to try something different- I am very glad that I did, because my meal was delicious. The string beans and carrots were crisp and the shrimp was warm and succulent. The sauce was spicy. My boyfriend ordered the shrimp clay pot. His meal came with fresh steamed vegetables, ginger noddles and shrimp. For dessert we ordered coconut fried ice cream with raspberry drizzle. This was my first time visiting the establishment. A couple of nights ago I stopped in for dinner with two other guests and we were not disappointed! We arrived around the beginning of their dinner rush when it was pretty empty and were seated right away as you would expect. The interior was nice and had a relaxed, chill vibe. My fiancée and I have ordered from them in the past and it is quite good, so I wasn't surprised to see six orders go out before our entrees even showed up. Our server was hustling, and it looks like he was serving, staging food orders, and helping the kitchen. Nice job! Nice touch on the Rain t-shirt, always good to see staff rocking the brand. For appetizers we had tamarind wings and calamari. The wings were delicious, crispy, and the sauce was tasty and spicy. Calamari was on point, cooked perfectly and tasted fresh. I had the roasted duck and it was crispy and delicious. The sauce was excellent and goes nicely with some rice. My lady had a shrimp dish with flat noodles; I QCd a few bites and it was flavorful with a nice texture on the noodles. I tried a side of sticky rice and it was STICKY! One interesting tidbit: I was a little sad when I looked through the menu and didn't see booze (though I don't hold it against a place for not serving alcohol). However, I found out after the fact that it is BYOB! BYOB is something I gotta do more of and I will definitely return and BMOB. :D We will be coming back and will be continuing to order delivery as well, keep up the great work. read more

I was thrilled to see another Thai restaurant open up in Washington Heights. Finally, my palate can expand past burgers, deli sandwiches and maduros selections. Aside from the fact that I love Thai food, I was most drawn to visiting Rain II because they offered BYOB with no corking fee! A rare treat in NYC! For the meal, we enjoyed Chicken Satay, Spicy Basil and Green Curry. Apparently, their mom is the one cooking in the kitchen, but breaking her heart won't keep me from an honest review. The Chicken Satay was standard. The Spicy Basil left more to be desired. It was a tad too salty and not spicy enough, although we requested it to be spicy and the server warned that it would be. The Green Curry was the winner of the night! It packed heat and flavor! I will definitely return for this dish. I would also return for the friendly and attentive waitstaff. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place if you're in the area. Beautiful inside, with lovely chandeliers and a nice fountain. Great place for a date. For delivery, it's also great. Great, inexpensive Thai food. I had the basil udon, which was so good. The noodles were thick and extremely flavorful. My friend had the pad thai, which came with wide noodles and looked amazing. My only concern is that the dishes are not particularly healthy, as a lot of oil is used and practically no vegetables/meat are included. The appetizers are really small, but they make up for it in taste. The Tom Yum Soup appetizer was awesome. Ever so slightly sour, it took a lot of control for me not to slurp it all when my sister went to the restroom. I don't know what authentic laksa tastes like, but the version here is really, really good. The curry soup itself is creamy and a little sweet with a healthy dose of coconut milk. :) The decor here is dark and intimate, and on a Friday afternoon, there was almost no one there.
