Batch bakehouse has so many wonderful pastry and other baked good options! I got the almond chocolate croissant, which was so delicious. The almond icing on the top makes it a much sweeter pastry, but I am generally never one to say "no" to more sugar, so it worked for me. And, the almond chocolate croissant was the same price as the regular chocolate one ($3.25). Overall, the croissant was a great mix of flaky on the outside and soft on the inside... yum!! The bakery is in an adorable area, has friendly staff and nice, bright lighting! A great place to stop in for a treat or meet a friend to enjoy some delicious Madison sweets. read more

I always wondered where Batch Bakehouse was located on Willy Street, and after it moved opposite of Ha Long Bay and right next to ace hardware, I finally visited it! Such a convenient location!! Very simple storefront and you can see all the hardworking employees making fresh bread at the back! Love the focaccia and bacon cheddar biscuits!!! And DON'T miss out the shortbreads in the fridge. If you, like me, have to bring in a treat for your coworkers on your birthday, swing by Batch. I always have this notion that I'll make something spectacular myself, but then the weather turns to ice storm or some other sh*t (because Wisconsin in February), and I'm too annoyed to bake. I had no plan other than to grab a coffee today, then I had an aha! moment. Pies, cakes, coffee cakes, cupcakes, cookies, just sitting there waiting to hop in my car and go to work with me and impress the heck out of the great people I work with. For $28 I got an amazing chocolate bourbon pecan pie that was meticulously crafted and delicious. Zero effort or mess for me. The storefront is easy to miss because it looks like part of the window repair shop (?) next door, but we all know that this is the one place on Willy Street that you do NOT want to pass over! To these folks, baking is an art form - one that they have mastered beautifully. I grabbed a ham&gruyere croissant and a scone (lemon-ginger, I think). I chose the croissant per the recommendation of the girl behind the counter. She mentioned that the head baker had trained in Paris, and since she led with that...I kinda HAD to try a croissant. The croissant is a good effort, but still a far cry from the ones I fell in love with in Paris. The flakiness of the baked dough isn't quite there, but the ham&gruyere filling is a nice touch. Of the two treats that I picked up, the scone was the clear winner. The candied ginger pieces provided a nice overtone and really complemented the citrus-y flavor of the pastry (it is actually filled with a citrus jam - a nice surprise when I cut the scone open!).The ginger also helped to cut the overall sweetness of the scone with a spicy zing. A wonderful, wonderful combination! :9 Batch is truly a must-visit if you are on the east side of town! I can't wait to sample more of their goodies!! I love Batch and appreciate their efforts to facilitate online ordering during the pandemic. Can you make it clearer during the ordering process that online orders can be called in for curbside pickup at the moment of pick up? I waited in line outside for 20 minutes just to pick up a cake I'd ordered. I don't think it is clear enough to people that you can call in to have your pre ordered items taken out to you. Best pastries in Madison by far. They run out of items within an hour after opening so you need to hurry. This happens pretty consistently during the weekend so I don't know why they don't just make more. Minus one star for the lack of customer service by the woman who works at the counter/picks up the phone Saturday mornings. She's pretty unfriendly and consistently has attitude when you try to place a hold order. She left me on hold for over 10 mins and clearly forgot about me until I hung up and had to call back, with no remorse. I get that you're busy but no need to throw customer service out the window when your customers aren't there in-person. read more

This place never disappoints me! They have the most wonderful croissants-so crusty on the surface and so soft in the inside. No master which flavor you pick, you never go wrong with it. The sweets are also very good. The shortbread cookies are sweet and special. I also like the dark chocolate cake with espresso syrup. It's super moisture inside, and the texture is so soft. I was a doubter but the morning bun and gruyere croissant made me believe. This bakery simply does everything right. Displays are gorgeous. Staff is friendly. Savory treats are filling (the gruyere goes so well with the flakiness of the croissant) and the sweet treats are done just right (not too sweet and some delicious glazed pecans in the morning bun). The sweet tooth craving struck again and off we went in search of another dangerously good sin maker :). Batch Bakehouse has a very low key appearance (blink and you'll miss kinds) but don't let that fool you coz the goods they have on offer are anything but subtle!! So after fighting with my inner self from not taking EVERYTHING on there, we decided to "settle" for a few Apple Pies, a Strawberry and Creme buttercake and a Black Bottom cupcake. The single serving apple pies are perfect if you wanna avoid the hassle of portioning a big one. The crust was delightfully buttery with the base holding up very well. The filling had bits of apple instead of chucks or slices and that works for a "mini" pie such as itself. The flavors and sweetness levels were spot on! The buttercake felt like a upmarket cousin to a muffin :). Silky with the cream cheese melting in your mouth and the tartness from the berry hitting your taste buds every once in a while..Niceeeeee Lastly the black bottom cupcake which if you look at it is their take on molten lava cake. And who doesn't like that!!! I did appreciate the fact that the chocolate, though dark, wasn't too bitter and outer crust wasn't overly dry. All delish, all the time. We get either the Scali or Cracked wheat loaves every week for sandwiches, etc. Since I'm there, I usually pick up a treat or two as well. Have to say they are all good, but their croissant-type dough (also shows up in the morning buns and I think the orange rolls) is amazing. Buttery, flaky and light. Delicious both in sweets and in the savory stuffed croissants. The last time I had the ham and cheese croissant, the ham was rolled quite thick, which made for a bit unbalanced flavor, but that was easily fixed. When I need some serious chocolate, the salted chocolate brownie is the way to go. And the service! Counter staff is friendly and cheerful. It was my first time visiting Batch Bakehouse. As every business strives to make efforts to prevent the spread of Covid-19, Batch Bakehouse is particularly well organized and feels like they have taken the appropriate safety measures. The staff was patient and friendly and took time to explain the pastry selection and speak to what some of the local favorites were. I ended up getting a chocolate chip croissant. It was incredibly savory with an excellent combination of the buttery, flaky roll with the sweetness of the chocolate chips. I grabbed a cup of iced coffee from a nearby shop. Anyone who knows me would say that I'm a donut fanatic, but I would choose batch Bakehouse pastries over most donuts. One note: Because of quality the prices of the pastries are a bit higher than your average donut shop, but I personally think they make an excellent splurge-worthy treat. read more

If you can believe it, I lived in Madison for almost a year before trying Batch and now I am deeply regretful of all that time I wasted. But seriously.. The Gruyere croissants? What is even better is they have partnered with Square Harvest, and I get this yummy goodness delivered straight to my door! What could be better than that?! It is beautiful gift when you are invited to dinner at friend's house. Their sweets are divine. Little sandwich cookies that are just plain beautiful and slices of apple cake. Their chocolate chip cookies are excellent. Scones and brownies call your name and you pace wanting to pick just the right thing. Oh dear Batch. It's such a good thing you are on the complete opposite side of town from me. Otherwise I would be one enormous unhealthy person. Everything here is ridiculously delicious. And I agree with the other reviewers-the various croissants are the closest thing I've come to outside of Paris (and I've tried my fair share across the USA!). Their latest creation, the cini-mini is absurdly good and I'm not even much of a cinnamon sugar treat fan. The Gruyere croissant is easily one of the best things I've ever eaten and while Batch may be far from the far west side, this delectable treat is available at the West Towne Metcalfe's (weekends only and you better go early!) as well as Willy Street West. Yummmmm. The olive fougasse (sp?) is also super delicious. But why bother saying that cuz everything here is super delicious. There is always a wide variety of sweet and savory, various fruit flavors (oh the mini sunny lemon, oh yes! The mini sunny lemon) as well as chocolate and non-chocolate delights. All this plus bread, filled rolls, great coffee and a small refrigerated case near the register with mini-key lime pies and the prettiest little cookie sandwiches I've ever seen. Oh yeah, and the people who work there are extremely patient as I stare and drool and try to decide what not to purchase this time. That's right, what NOT to buy. Cuz if left up to me and no one was looking, I'd eat one (or two) of everything in the case. And that's saying something cuz the selection is huge (as long as you go before 10ish on the weekends!). Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the doughnuts from Greenbush, the morning buns from Manna (and before that from Oven of Brittany) and cupcakes from Bloom. But I never had a place to go to get a wide variety of consistently delicious sweet and savory baked goods until Batch Bakehouse swept me off my feet. Things I love: * the vanilla swirl croissant a.k.a. the pastry orgasm. One bite into the flaky exterior and your eyes will roll back into your head and the satisfied moans of contentment commence. * the salted caramel brownie (see vanilla swirl description) * the passion of the staff members: I'm always warmly greeted when I walk into the store. At the old location, they always gave my daughter a free pasty if we showed up around closing time. Several of my favorite baking classes at Orange Tree Imports were taught by Batch employees. (If you want to seriously improve your game as a bread baker, sign up for these classes ASAP, don't delay!) These folks love what they do and it shines through with every item you see in the display. * the freakishly incredible variety of pastries. Check out the website for a list of what they sell. Just have a napkin ready to sop up the inevitable drooling that will commence once you start reading that list. Things I don't: * OK, the only thing I can come up with is that I would become more ginormous than Jabba the Hutt if I ate everything that looked good every time I shopped at Batch. You know what's better than carbs and fats? Nothing. This is what you do on a lazy Sunday afternoon after a long drive. Stop at Batch, pick up some baked goodness, eat, then wander around in the sun (attempting) to work off all that you inhaled. I had the plain croissant as well as a pain au fromage. Delicious. Perfectly baked. Perfectly flakey yet soft. The croissant had the right amount of "bite" to it. I have no negative comments about taste, staff, decor. I am glad they were able to move into a bigger location in the same neighborhood, though I do miss the smaller more intimate feel as now it has more of a mass-market kitchen feel to it. We were greeted when we walked in and quickly asked how they could help us. Help me? The only way one can help me in a bakery is by kindly pointing me in the direction of the door so I don't inhale the entire place. read more

Bless Batch. Their baguettes are the best in town (with options for baguette and demi baguette depending on how hungry you are). Everything from cookies to croissants are absolutely delicious and high quality. I gravitate mostly towards the sweets but the savory items like the quiche are and croissants are a good size for having one savory item and one sweet. The savory pastries, such as chorizo&cheese bread and gruyere croissants, are a little messy, but honestly, such is the nature of anything with these types of cheeses. Single serve monkey bread is an awesome idea--sometimes you just don't want to break out the Bundt pan but here they are in single servings. Seating is mostly on stools facing the window and you can also purchase coffee or bottled beverages. Batch is my #1 recommended bakery in town for nearly anything! read more

I am putting this out there: I feel like I am totally out of place by only rating them a 4/5. This could be because I have only tried two things...so far. I walk in to expect a super overwhelming, packed store. It was not. Point for Batch. I did not expect the amount of variety in absolutely everything. I read the reviews so I thought I was prepared. Man. I had to walk by about 5 times to officially decide and determine my order. I finally decided on the apple pie ($3.75) and the caramelized onion focaccia ($4?). I ate the pie in my car...I could not wait to take it home. The pie was full of cinnamon, a denser crust and lots of apples. It tasted ok. It tasted like a pie. I think I was so hyped that I expected the pie beyond pies. I am glad to know another place where I can get pie but it also makes it very tempting to try and perfect my own apple pie and save almost $4.00. Again, do not get me wrong, it is a good pie but was not OMG good. The focaccia was good. That one did make it home and the sig. other actually enjoyed it and he is picky. I like onions. I think a cheese on top would have made it Super Duper focaccia but at that point does that still mean it is focaccia or closer to a sandwich? Either way, it was good. I will for sure be going back to try the endless supply of goodies. I am still in search of my OMG pie but this pie would do for a good eat. read more

Items Selected: Carrot Cake Cupcake with Cream Cheese Frosting Bourbon Pecan and Salted Caramel Danish Strawberries and Cream Buttercake Monkey Bread Almond Croissant Located at 1402 Williamson Street and as such a logical follow-up to breakfast at Lazy Janes it was a short walk in the sun to Batch Bakehouse and with a selection of pastries even more sizable than the place I'd just been it was with much hemming-and-hawing that selections were made, another five pastries joining leftovers from Lazy Janes in a smorgasbord of sweets to be consumed throughout the course of the day. Trending far more artisan than its nearby neighbor with French techniques infusing classics from the American cookbook and the bakers themselves acting as servers it was only after several questions that I eventually settled on an order far smaller than I should have liked and beginning my tasting at the small countertop with a moist carrot cake topped in tangy cream cheese I knew right away that none of this one was leaving the store - a similar sentiment shared by later samples, though each was indeed eaten only in part with the rest saved for a later day snack. Moving from cupcake to the only item that would prove the least bit dull, suffice it to say that monkey bread is found better elsewhere, but moving on to arching layers not the least bit burdened by frangipane beneath a shattering shell I'd be really surprised if a better almond croissant can be found in town. Admittedly a bit sugar-saturated at this point it was onward to the dense butter cake that I progressed and, although enthusiasts from the Show Me State may claim the rounded muffin to be unauthentic, the creamy texture was divine - a similar superlative soon to be lavished on the buttery Danish with flavors both savory and sweet to spare, a light smokiness from the baked bourbon tickling the palate as candied pecans crunched with each bite. read more
