Similarly to the impacts on other cultural narratives, the cuisines of Sephardic Jews from the Middle East are often overlooked as a consequence of Israel's unrelenting Eurocentric nationalism. As a result, many American Jews were until recently unfamiliar with the malawach, one of the prides of the Yemenite Jewish kitchen. The dish has started to appear on more menus in New York, and Batata's rendition in a secluded corner of Windsor Terrace is a beautifully crispy, caramelized take. The fillings are a bit untraditional, served with scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese, but paired with the tomato chutney often seen with jachnun. Hopefully we will eventually see more Sephardic cuisine in the city, beyond just Kubeh and an occasional malawach cameo.

Wow! I've never had sweet potato falafel but it might be my new obsession now that I've been introduced to it. It's got a more earthy and sweet taste than the regular chickpea falafels. We got: Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich 10/10 Sweet Potato Falafel Sandwich 10/10 I'm actually quite surprised as I've always thought Falafel Tanami would be my favorite falafel sandwich place but this place is pretty comparable. Their sandwiches have different fillings and they have more options here. They are very generous with the portion size and definitely fill up the sandwich even for a take out order. I love the beets in the sweet potato falafel. If you want meat the chicken schnitzel is delicious and unique option. Definitely give their sweet potato falafel a try!

Israeli food is one of my favorites-- the fresh salads and seared proteins all seasoned to perfection with spices and high quality olive oil are the stuff of gods. It's one of the cuisines correlated with the longest life span so maybe there really is something to it and if eating falafel is treating my body like a temple then give me a lifetime supply of it. This is a casual cafe where you order and pay at the register and bus your own table. There's plenty of indoor seating but it was a nice day so we sat at one of their outdoor tables, which was great for people watching along busy Fort Hamilton Parkway. I always have high hopes for falafel but good falafel where not only is it crispy, the interior is full of good flavor. Thankfully Batata's was of the good variety, each bite pairing deliciously with their tahini and hot sauce. The schnitzel and waffle was a great take on a chicken and waffle, with pillowy, fresh waffles and syrup. They have some amazing looking breakfast sandwiches, salads, and sandwiches so I'm bound to find myself here again soon.

The waffle was great, as was the honey butter. The chicken schnitzel was the thinnest chicken I have ever encountered. No chicken flavor at all. It was like I was eating breading. I'd rather have just ordered the waffle alone. The cashier was super sweet though!

A good spot for brunch, or to pick up a smoothie. The smoothies were healthy and refreshing, and I had no complaints about the food either. The egg and cheese malawich was definitely the highlight, and we got a plate of hummus which was smooth and flavorful, paired with freshly made pita. Small quaint Israeli cafe good for breakfast and brunch. We ordered a mix of the hummuses, falafel salad, and falafel pitas. All we're tasty and fresh. The falafel pitas did fall apart easily so we just ate them with forks. Service was good, very friendly staff. Food and drinks came out fast, and overall we had a nice brunch.

Batata is Hebrew/Arabic for sweet potato, so try their signature sweet potato falafel. At $8 for a whole wheat pita (sandwich), it's a satisfying vegetarian meal for a good price. The eggplant pita is also delicious. The menu is a bit confusing to figure out because the key info on the left is blocked by the drink fridge. Basically you choose your main filling in the top row, the type of packing (pita/salad/plate) in the lower rows. It's not just pita/salad/plate, they also each have their own variations. Maybe I'm the only one but I'm never sure exactly what I've ordered until it arrives... They have soup in the winter but you have to get there early before it runs out. They offer Turkish coffee but it's really what Israelis call (Turkish coffee mixed with hot water and served in a glass, not "cooked" in an ibrik). They also have a wide selection of flavored kombucha. There's WiFi but you have to ask for the password, it's not posted anywhere. That just means more interaction with the friendly employees! Gender neutral restroom is up a few stairs, so it's not accessible. They open up the front in the summer so you can sit outside/inside, and the outdoor furniture stays there through the winter, so you can enjoy those short sunny days.

This place is a welcome delicious addition to the lunch scene in Kensington. Super fresh Israeli platters, solid smoothies, and welcoming for tots. Favorites are the egg and cheese malawa, chicken shwarma, and falafel. Plus the people are really polite and warm. read more

Quaint and yummy. I had a mint lemonade and quinoa arugula salad. My friend had the chicken shwarma sandwich. I'd eat here all the time if I lived in the neighborhood. Any interest in opening another in north Slope? Great spot all around. read more

I love this place! I cannot recommend this little neighborhood gem enough! The food is delicious, the staff are warm and professional and the ambience is spot-on and completely wonderful. And its super well-priced. You can tell they care deeply about every dish that's served and use only the freshest, highest quality ingredients. Everything is delicious! I've had the falafel sandwich over a dozen times and its consistently good - the texture and flavors are just perfect. They're so original in the sweet potato falafel so def give that a try. And also try the add-ons and don't miss the schug (spicy) and amba (think "umami") which just add depth of flavor so each time is is different. I heard they just got a new chef and this guy has literally transformed something that was already really good into great! read more

I'm so glad we decided to try Batata, especially as it's right down the block from us. We ordered the shawarma, a falafel sandwich, and the babaganouche with honey toast; too much food for the two of us. The falafel sandwich was delicious, and I'm not the biggest fan. They are usually too dry but this one was really good and moist. Chicken was well seasoned, with delicious yogurt dip. All in all, I would definitely go back. The young woman who took our order and brought the food was very pleasant. read more

I have tried this place 3x's because I truly believe a restaurant can have off days. I'm also very confused by 4/5 stars. Friends/family the lines would be out the door? I live within walkin distance and sadly it's always empty. I had the falafel it was over cooked to the point of the chickpeas were non-existent. The Shepard salad had no flavor what so ever. The Baba Ghanoush was so awful I had to recheck what I ordered. I also had a chicken dish that was so shredded and over seasoned. The only item that had flavor was the cabbage salad. I noticed that the owners who are very nice have not been present and different cooks/mangers? This could be the reason for the inconsistency. Sorry. read more

Want to wait for 25 minutes, have them being out the wrong order, then yell at you? Then please go here. This has happened twice. Considering they have 4 people in the kitchen, half the food is cold salad, you get your own silverware, and they are never full, you'd think service would be better. They are slow, rude, and don't even clean the tables. I really have no idea how they stay open. The food is good, but the atmosphere ruins it every time. read more

The portion sizes here are so comical that my girlfriend and I thought we were being punked. We called to alert the staff we were served kids meals - and they were of no assistance. This place is an absolute ripoff. Do yourself a favor and go to gyro cafe on Coney Island avenue, which has better food and much larger potions, at half the price. read more

I had high hopes for Batata - it looked so promising given I love veggie and Israeli cuisine. Unfortunately the service and food we're disappointing. We ordered take-out and when we called we we're told it would be 25 minutes because there we're people ahead of us. That seemed like a weird thing to say but no problem. When we picked up the food they asked if we wanted pita for $1 extra, we said yes and when we got home there was no pita and the food was ice cold. So we had to go back in the freezing cold to get the pita and they didn't offer us any extra for the inconvenience even though we tipped 15% on a take out order. Also, shouldn't a $10/$12 falafel/chicken platter come with pita anyway? It wasn't even worth the trip because it is just crappy store-bought pita, not handmade and had no flavor. The food was ok but the whole thing was over-shadowed by the crappy service. Sorry Batata, it wasn't worth the $34 and we won't be back. read more

I like this place. It has healthier middle eastern type food you can get delivered or eat in. Ive only had delivery so far and it's been very high quality and delicious. I am a vegetarian so I've had the eggplant sandwich, a falafel platter (sweet potato falafel) and the Brussels sprouts. Everything ive had is great but it is a tad on the pricey side. The delivery person was also very nice. read more

There's something about Batata that doesn't feel so inviting, and wish I could put my finger on it. The lentil barley soup was delicious but it took a long time. I was getting a bit impatient, under the impression the soup was already made and ready to go (it was snowing out) and the woman behind the register was snobby and defensive. I said thank you, it was delicious and she didn't even reply. I wish I could say I love this place. I would recommend it to someone needing a falafel on the go, but not for a unique, warm, atmosphere. There's just something a bit off. If they could just speed things up a bit and provide happier, warmer service, this would be my go to place. But for now, I probably won't be going back. read more

I work nearby and it's my go-to place for a treat outside of the office. The food is fresh and the service is awesome. The molasses milk is the best, though they haven't had it the last few times I've ordered. Just beware when schools are closed because this place gets packed with families for breakfast, lunch, snack, early dinner, etc. read more

We are so lucky to have this new addition to our neighborhood! I happened upon Batata walking the baby the other day and a neighbor said, well if you are thinking about eating here it's delicious...so I went in, I got the Fallafel with Beets and Pickles and Red Cabbage on Whole Wheat Pita...the first bite was warm with crispy perfectly cooked falafel and the cool pickles all crispy I think I sighed! I immediately messaged my best friend from Israel and told her we had a new winner in our neighborhood, I had a shake with it. Yesterday my daughter and I had the Chicken Shnitzel, OMG SO delicious and HUGE with the Arugula salad with feta and almonds, what can I say, I may never cook again, especially in this weather...such nice cozy food to curl up with the family and eat...so fresh and so lovingly cooked, and the staff...so helpful and eager to serve...everything wonderful in a new restaurant THANK YOU Batata restaurant for taking a chance on our neighborhood...I hope we all support you and your efforts! See you a bunch for sure! Ft Hamilton Pkwy has turned into quite the restaurant block, hasn't it!!?! The plates and sandwiches are always very good. Most often we have either the chicken or falafel, I wouldn't get the chicken sandwich without the feta but that's just me. Smoothies are good too, the fries are kinda soggy and the rest of the sides are nothing special but overall it's a solid place to eat in or get delivery. read more

Thank you TODA for existing! For years I've been looking for authentic israeli food and I am so happy it's in my hood. Amazing kol hakavod (respect) to the owners for opening! So far only had the hummus, labane and shnitzel but it's all so delicious, fresh and you would never know you're not eating it in Tel Aviv. How come other restaurants can't get pita right but you can?? Thank you!! read more

Great new spot in the neighborhood. I've had sandwiches to take away twice and they've been fantastic both times. I had the falafel and the labne eggplant, which were both great, but my partner had the chicken schnitzel and says it's his fave sandwich in the neighborhood (even above Joe's which is sacrilege!). Anyway, a superb addition to our local food options. read more

Love this place. As mentioned before, the sweet potato falafel is incredible. I would dare say this is much more a cafe, than a restaurant. Small and lovely space, and you're definitely able to dine alone without feeling awkward. The service is fast and friendly. I really dig the local advertising board too. read more

Batata is a great little restaurant that serves nourishing and affordable Israeli comfort food. I've loved pretty much every single thing I've ever ordered from this place: avocado on toast, tuna on toast, scrambled egg and cheese malawach, quinoa and arugula salad, cheesecake, and semolina cake, to name a few. (I have yet to try their falafel sandwiches, which I've heard are excellent.) On top of being healthy and delicious, their food is remarkably affordable in light of their obviously high quality ingredients and generous portions. Highly recommend. read more

I would have probably rated it 3.5 stars, but the German roach running around pained me to see and stole my appetite. I'd want to say I'd come back and try one of those delicious sounding breakfast sandwiches, but roaches are a hard sell for me.

I've been here a number of times because I'll be in the neighborhood. This is definitely one of my favorite bodegas around. My favorite part being how personable and friendly the family who runs it. They've now become a familiar face. Overall, a recommend for if you happen to be passing by. It's conveniently located by the F/G subway stop, so it's hard to miss.

A manager approached us and informed us that outside food was not permitted, even though purchases had been made. We were then asked to leave and eat outside in the hot weather. I understand that businesses have policies regarding outside food, and I respect the need to enforce them. However, I believe this situation could have been handled with greater compassion and understanding, given that the group consisted of individuals with disabilities who rely on packed lunches due to financial limitations. As someone who has consistently supported your establishment, I was disappointed by the lack of flexibility and empathy shown. Unfortunately, because of this experience, I will no longer be bringing my business or the individuals I support to your establishment. I stumbled on the place from Instagram and always thought the food looked so good so felt I needed to see what it was all about. LET ME TELL YOU! The food was out of this world!
