I stumbled upon this place on a random afternoon cycling in the rain to get a haircut nearby. You would miss it on busy Coney Island Avenue if you weren't looking for it -- the only reason I did was because I was checking for baking supplies at the nearby Ideal Supermarket. The only thing that betrays the hidden nature of Dunya Kabab House is the brilliant red sign. Upon closer inspection, you can see a warm dining area, glass partition to see "where the magic happens" in the kitchen behind, and the many articles plastered showing their unique take on Afghani food. I bookmarked the spot to come back to, and within the week, I came back and ordered takeout for the dish most fellow reviewers raved about -- the Uzbeki Qabuli Pulao. When I got home and opened the bag, I was pleasantly surprised to find a small side salad and the dish I recognised from a visit to another nearby restaurant specialising in Uzbeki food -- the plov! The rice was really well seasoned and the lamb shank was so tender it fell off the bone. Everything was really flavourful and well balanced, even for take-out. Unlike the other place, this plov was still sweet without being cloyingly so. Wow this is a legendary Afghan restaurant located in Kensington Brooklyn and from the mante, to the chicken kebab plate I can't tell you what's not amazing about this place. Good restaurant to come in with the family but also great for take out, and the quality and consistency is always top notch. The mante is seasoned so well and it's always fresh to order and one of my favorite dishes of all time. The food is very palatable as it's not spicy and you get a great value for your money. I went on a Wednesday night with 3 friends, and the place was pretty empty except for a group of elderly Middle Eastern men. Smooth jazz was playing (which I thought was a bit incongruous), and the ambiance was calm, well lit and brightly colored. The food was fabulous: I got the Uzbeki Qabuli Pulao, and my friends got a variety of other dumplings, kabobs and platters. The meat was juicy and fall-off-the-bone tender, and the rice, carrots and sweet raisins were also well-seasoned and flavorful, instead of just being sides. So glad that this amazing spot is right around the corner from my apartment! It's absolutely delicious--I'm a big fan of the beef kofta kebab with the qabuli topping. I also highly recommend the firnee, a decadent custard with pistachios--could honestly eat it all day. The service was fast and excellent, and the restaurant has a wonderfully welcoming feel, with lovely decorative touches and striking wall art. Afghan is one of my favorite cuisines and Dunya is where I come back to whenever I am craving kababs, bolani, mantu, or any of the amazing dishes they serve here. Despite having several solid options for Afghan in Queens, I will absolutely give this establishment the nod as the best of the best and go out of my way to eat here. The food is very well made and each bite from the beginning to the end is worth savoring. The pumpkin bolani is one of my most favorite items on the menu and I can never get enough, and their mantu is very filling and delicious. Their kababs are very flavorful, succulent and tender, and the Uzbeki Qabuli Palau is a must! The food is filling but I would definitely save room for dessert and Afghan tea! The ferni, rice pudding, and baklava are all very good and worth sharing. The service here is wonderful and the staff work hard to make sure customers are provided for; it's not a white table cloth experience so you have to do your part and be understanding of the pace of things considering it can get very busy for them with diners and delivery orders piling up constantly. The space is casual but welcoming and I appreciate the homage paid to the beautiful landscape and culture of Afghanistan with various murals and decorations. Despite some heightened tensions, this restaurant provides very good food. It might be better for takeout though, which is a shame because I think this a cuisine that tastes great to eat indoors. Everything tasted great. The lamb shank is amazing. The meat just falls off the bone, and is tender and delicious. It comes with rice and salad, but for a little extra you can get a Qabuli Pulao, a pilaf rice with sweet raisins and julienned carrots. Do that. It is terrific. You get plenty of it as well. I also got a Lentil soup that was generous and delicious as well. The side salad is par for the course. The heightened tensions came in the form of a misunderstanding. I told them I wanted to stay in but they packed it up like I wanted takeout. I insisted I wanted dine-in; they relented and took the bag and plated everything up nicely. Then they gave me some free bread as an apology for the mixup. The bread is nothing great, unfortunately. I will dock a point or so for lack of a free water option. I hate that. I should never have to pay for water in a sit down restaurant. It is tacky. Even if they do not, a complementary tea would work too. It just seems this restaurant favors takeout, which again, is a shame considering I liked the food. The staff were friendly as well despite the mishap. I can't recommend Dunya enough if you're in or around Kensington. The mantu is a must, and if you have a group of at least 3-4, I recommend ordering multiple servings because everyone will gobble these dumplings up. They're so comforting and delicious, filled with ground beef and doused in lamb gravy and yogurt sauce (or you can get a vegetarian version). The Afghan salad, a refreshing lemony mix of tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions, is a great side dish to get your veggies in. For heftier entrees, it's impossible to go wrong with any of the kababs. I've had the salmon, the boneless chicken thigh, the boneless chicken breast, and the lamb. The meats are all perfectly seasoned and juicy. moist and juicy and flavorful meats, complemented by the rice and sweetness of carrots and raisins. I also recommend using a liberal amount of the sauces they provide. The cilantro chutney's my favorite, but the red sauce and yogurt sauce are also tasty. If you're in the mood for tea, $4 will yield a shareable teapot. I'm also partial to the doogh, a refreshing and savory yogurt drink. And on my most recent visit, our waiter was so nice and gave the four of us a complimentary firnee, a custard made with sweet milk, cinnamon, rose water, and cardamom. The vegetarian sampler is delicious. The rice is rich without feeling greasy. The eggplant is decadent, and the spinach is perfectly cooked. The okra is surprisingly flavorful. On this quiet stretch of urban sprawl that is Coney Island Avenue, tucked between tire shops and gas stations is this homey Afghan restaurant. It's filled at all hours of the day with families chowing down on hearty, delicious dishes made with soul and after both of my meals here I was already planning my next visit. I like to start my meal here with some bolani, a fried flatbread stuffed with pumpkin, leeks, or meat. They have an assorted platter filled with all of the above, and the exterior is crispy and goes really well with the yogurt sauce they offer on the side. Alternatively or as a complement to this dish it's nice to start with some of their thin skinned dumplings, called manti, which remind me of wontons except theirs are filled with ground lamb, beef, or chicken. Dumplings are present in so many different cuisines and as someone who grew up eating Chinese dumplings I love the familiarity and simultaneous newness of Afghan manti. For my main, I enjoy their salmon, cooked to perfection on a grill and arrives with a smoky char and impeccably cooked interior. It's served on a bed of their buttery, pillow Afghan rice (pulao), which has caramelized slivers of carrots and raisins, giving the rice a nice added sweetness. All the while I'm enjoying bites of their fresh salad, with diced cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, carrots, and aromatics. I also recommend their lentil soup, which is so soothing, full of flavor, and completely vegetarian. If you have a sweet tooth their firni is a rosewater rice pudding that doesn't feel too rich or heavy. The owner, Mo, is always on site and has so much passion for hospitality and telling a story through his food. Nothing special, the food was cooked well but nothing was seasoned. I've never had a meal with no flavor. Even the rice was unseasoned. Looks like brown long grained basmati, did not come with carrots and raisins like the picture. The garden salad was super fresh with fresh tomatoes and crisp cucumbers with a nice dressing. The chicken thigh kebabs were kind of dry to be honest, not moist as raved about in other reviews and very underseasoned as well. The meal was not worth the price at all. There are so many other great restaurants in Kensington, Brooklyn, this is the most expensive for its south central Asian cuisine for which there is an abundance of restaurants being at least 4 directly across the street such as Pakistani Mashalla Restaurant, Gyro Cafe and Jalsa east Indian down the block. Great Afghan restaurant! Brooklyn has some amazing food and it's only getting better. Dunya Kabab House has delicious food and generous portions; the people who work there are very polite and professional. The Afghan white sauce is amazing, wish they sold it by the bottle. The green sauce is delicious too and goes well with the kababs. I tried 1) The salmon kabab. Included nice large fish pieces and deliciously seasoned rice. 2) The Mantu dumplings, vegan option. It comes with lamb gravy but they also offer a vegan version. Tasty and filling. 3) A simple salad, but the white sauce really adds flavor. If you're tired of the same old salad, suggest trying it with their sauce. 4) Firnee for dessert. This sweet yet light custard with cinnamon, rose water and cardamom is one of my favorites. I've tried many different versions over the years and this has to be one of the best yet. It was very filling, I had it with some tea. I'm glad I chose this instead of the usual baklava, although I'm sure that's great too. I enjoyed the food so much that I called the restaurant to thank them! Giving a five star review is easy. I attended a Yelp event a while back and that's how I learn about this restaurant. Their food was so good that I decided to go back to check them out on my own. By far their food tasted much better then the first time. I ended up ordering their lamb chop kabab over afghan rice and it was fantastic. The plate also comes with a side order of salad so that was refreshing. My lamb was cooked to profession. The meat was flavorful and moist. Every bite complimented well with the rice and I especially enjoy the sweetness of the raison that have a hint of cardamom. Service wise, everyone was friendly. I love the open kitchen so you can see inside. This shows confident from a restaurant owner because they have nothing to hide. The restaurant was pretty crowded and I do hope they gain even more popularity. Their food was a treat and I definitely look to coming back as I don't live too far from them. read more

I travelled from California to New York last week and went to Dunya Kabob House for some authentic Afghan Food. It is the most amazing afghan food I've had! We ordered a bunch of things from the menu to try like the Lamb Chop, Lamb Shank, Chabli Kabob, Kabli Palow, and Bulanee. The food was excellent!! The sauces on the side were tasty too. The restaurant has a great atmosphere. It's so clean on the inside and feels like home. The prices are reasonable with the perfect portions. And the service was outstanding!! We were able to meet the owner who was so genuine and nice. High quality food and high quality service! I can't wait to go to New York again to eat here. I first ate here through a Yelp Elite event and after trying a variety of wonderfully delicious Afghani dishes, I KNEW I had to return. Less than two weeks later, I kept my word and came back. I brought my partner with me this time, so that he could experience everything he missed out on. Ordering as a self-proclaimed "pro" (it was his first time having Afghan food), I got us the following: Bolani Gandana ($6.99) - omg these are basically Chinese-style scallion pancakes. A bit crispier and dipped in a white sauce, they are heavenly and addicting. He inhaled 3 pieces (there are 6 total) while I was still on my first. Mantu ($6.99) - reminiscent of Chinese-style wontons (shape and texture) but probably tastes more like beef ravioli. This blend of cultures is *chef's kiss* Mixed Afghan Kabab w/ Qabuli ($22.99) - to try a variety of kababs: chicken, lamb and beef. All very tasty ESPECIALLY with the qabuli aka Afghan rice. Absolutely a must-get here; highly recommend upgrading your platter to include the qabuli. We didn't finish this one, but we're sooo excited about the leftovers we get to enjoy at home this week. Uzbeki Qabuli Pulao ($20.99) - just WOW. Blew me away the first time, and again the second time. This dish is like the above, but instead of the kababs you get a huuuge lamb shank that is so incredibly tender. Fall off the bone to the point where it's difficult to even pick up the meat with a fork. No gaminess at all and just pure deliciousness. Even more amazing with the white sauce. Having stopped in once before, I knew Mohammed at the front counter would be friendly and welcoming and that the restaurant would be spotlessly clean. I ordered meat mantu dumplings to bring home. When I got home they were still warm and and absolutely delicious with a thin skin, a nice balance of seasonings in the filling and a savory sauce. Then for dessert their I had their firni (rice pudding) that was smooth, not overly sweet with a hint of rose water. I have been to several Afghani restaurants in NYC and this was one of the best. Got two appetizers (the meat dumplings and the scallion ones) the salad and lamb kebab. It was just enough for two. Everything was great. My guess from reading reviews is you can't really go wrong. The meat dumplings were more delicate than expected and had a great mix of flavors, the lamb was simple but more tender than average, like they gave it a nice marinade. Oh yea this place is amazing. Location right on Coney Island Ave is unfortunate, since if it was located anywhere else I'm sure business would be booming. But seems they get by just fine ;) The food is fantastic and the service very kind. We did the "we have kids" dinner seating at 5pm, so it was pretty empty when we went, so can't speak to vibe / ambiance. But the food is why you're here. Hummus is amazing.
