Wow this is a legendary Afghan restaurant located in Kensington Brooklyn and from the mante, to the chicken kebab plate I can't tell you what's not amazing about this place. Good restaurant to come in with the family but also great for take out, and the quality and consistency is always top notch. The mante is seasoned so well and it's always fresh to order and one of my favorite dishes of all time. The food is very palatable as it's not spicy and you get a great value for your money. It's also halal and a great option in the area or if you're looking to explore and try some classic afghan food! read more

I had been to this Afghan restaurant once a good while ago, having gone there as part of a Yelp event where I loved the food. More recently, I hosted a meal here with a bunch of others, and there were enough glaring issues that I can't recommend this place anymore, regardless of the excellent quality. The place is casual, and the staff had to be asked for silverware, extra cups for water, spoons for serving, and other items. To drink, someone had a $5 Doogh, and I ordered one too, but it never arrived, though at least it wasn't on the bill. They gave us a simple salad to munch on prior to the meal, which worked well with the yogurt dressing on the table. The bread on everyone else's table was missing from ours, which turned out to be the first difference in our meal compared to most other tables. For appetizers, we got a couple that were both $8 and had the same type of sauce. My preference of the two was the Mantu, or steamed dumplings stuffed with ground beef. The dish came with six large dumplings that were plump, with a nice thin dumpling skin. There was also the Aushak, filled with leeks and scallions. In comparison, they were smaller and a bit thicker, with a more refreshing filling. The sauces on both dishes consisted of a mix of garlic mint yogurt and a lamb/tomato-based sauce, and they went well, adding some tang. Of the mains, my preference was the $15 Chapli Kabob, or sizzling pan-fried ground beef patties mixed with fresh vegetables. In comparison to the Pakistani version, they were more delicately spiced, but I didn't mind, as there still was a little pleasant kick. The meat, otherwise, was very tender, with the three patties easily broken apart with a spoon for sharing. The group favorite was surprisingly the Spicy Chicken Kabob, consisting of boneless chicken breast marinated with a blend of Afghan spices for $17. The chicken was very tender and juicy, with a mild kick. I found it better than the $18 Lamb Tikka Kabob, with the meat in the latter being tasty but a bit dry/overcooked. There was also the tasty $15 Borani Banjan, or fried eggplant seasoned with spices and topped with garlic mint yogurt. This is available as an appetizer, but we got it as a main. The eggplant had a light crisp and a similarly tasty sauce, similar to the appetizers, which made sense in retrospect. The most well-known dish here is the Uzbeki Qabuli Pulao for $23, or braised lamb shank served over a bed of rice and garnished with sweet raisins and carrots. The lamb fell off the bone and was wonderful overall, and I can see why this is the most popular option here. I would comment on the Qabuli Pulao, but they gave us standard brown rice. They eventually gave us a separate dish of raisins and carrots, but this was annoying at best, as a few other dishes were coming out with said mixture on other tables, and I doubt they had all ordered it prior. For dessert, we got a single order of Firnee for $6, a housemade custard made with sweet milk, cinnamon, rosewater, and cardamom, garnished with minced pistachios. The custard was light with a mild sweetness. Otherwise, there was a pleasant floral flavor. We had a $5 pot of green tea with that dessert, which had some cardamom and I think maybe a little bit of cinnamon as well, and it went well. Overall, it was good, though a few of us got dessert afterwards at the excellent Pakistani shop Narala nearby. If the food wasn't so good, I'd be docking this spot another point or two, as this was the first time in a very long time that it felt like we were getting a different experience, in terms of bread and especially the rice, for some rather obvious/unfortunate reasons. The fact that they charged us for this rice multiple times without giving us said pulao irks me as well, even if it's only $3 per dish. To be honest, I would prefer to go back to a pricier spot in Manhattan, such as Afghan Kabob House or Ariana, where the service is nicer and we get the same experience. read more

I stumbled upon this place on a random afternoon cycling in the rain to get a haircut nearby. You would miss it on busy Coney Island Avenue if you weren't looking for it -- the only reason I did was because I was checking for baking supplies at the nearby Ideal Supermarket. The only thing that betrays the hidden nature of Dunya Kabab House is the brilliant red sign. Upon closer inspection, you can see a warm dining area, glass partition to see "where the magic happens" in the kitchen behind, and the many articles plastered showing their unique take on Afghani food. I bookmarked the spot to come back to, and within the week, I came back and ordered takeout for the dish most fellow reviewers raved about -- the Uzbeki Qabuli Pulao. When I got home and opened the bag, I was pleasantly surprised to find a small side salad and the dish I recognised from a visit to another nearby restaurant specialising in Uzbeki food -- the plov! The rice was really well seasoned and the lamb shank was so tender it fell off the bone. Everything was really flavourful and well balanced, even for take-out. Unlike the other place, this plov was still sweet without being cloyingly so. I had such good impression that I'm excited to return in the future and try their other dishes, since I heard *everything* Dunya Kebab House does is impeccable. read more

I went on a Wednesday night with 3 friends, and the place was pretty empty except for a group of elderly Middle Eastern men. Smooth jazz was playing (which I thought was a bit incongruous), and the ambiance was calm, well lit and brightly colored. The food was fabulous: I got the Uzbeki Qabuli Pulao, and my friends got a variety of other dumplings, kabobs and platters. The meat was juicy and fall-off-the-bone tender, and the rice, carrots and sweet raisins were also well-seasoned and flavorful, instead of just being sides. Afterwards, they comped the two teas that we got, which was such a gracious move. This place is out of the way for me, but I would certainly go again! read more

Best lentil soup in Brooklyn. I also like the lamb kebab and the yogurt sauce they give you with the rice.

So glad that this amazing spot is right around the corner from my apartment! It's absolutely delicious--I'm a big fan of the beef kofta kebab with the qabuli topping. I also highly recommend the firnee, a decadent custard with pistachios--could honestly eat it all day. The service was fast and excellent, and the restaurant has a wonderfully welcoming feel, with lovely decorative touches and striking wall art. It's also super affordable for the quality and portion size--this is definitely going to become a go-to for lunch and dinner in the neighborhood for me. Don't miss it! read more

Afghan is one of my favorite cuisines and Dunya is where I come back to whenever I am craving kababs, bolani, mantu, or any of the amazing dishes they serve here. Despite having several solid options for Afghan in Queens, I will absolutely give this establishment the nod as the best of the best and go out of my way to eat here. The food is very well made and each bite from the beginning to the end is worth savoring. The pumpkin bolani is one of my most favorite items on the menu and I can never get enough, and their mantu is very filling and delicious. Their kababs are very flavorful, succulent and tender, and the Uzbeki Qabuli Palau is a must! The food is filling but I would definitely save room for dessert and Afghan tea! The ferni, rice pudding, and baklava are all very good and worth sharing. The service here is wonderful and the staff work hard to make sure customers are provided for; it's not a white table cloth experience so you have to do your part and be understanding of the pace of things considering it can get very busy for them with diners and delivery orders piling up constantly. The space is casual but welcoming and I appreciate the homage paid to the beautiful landscape and culture of Afghanistan with various murals and decorations. The land, people, and food of Afghanistan are very beautiful and it's a privilege to share in the love this establishment espouses. read more

Despite some heightened tensions, this restaurant provides very good food. It might be better for takeout though, which is a shame because I think this a cuisine that tastes great to eat indoors. Everything tasted great. The lamb shank is amazing. The meat just falls off the bone, and is tender and delicious. It comes with rice and salad, but for a little extra you can get a Qabuli Pulao, a pilaf rice with sweet raisins and julienned carrots. Do that. It is terrific. You get plenty of it as well. I also got a Lentil soup that was generous and delicious as well. The side salad is par for the course. The heightened tensions came in the form of a misunderstanding. I told them I wanted to stay in but they packed it up like I wanted takeout. I insisted I wanted dine-in; they relented and took the bag and plated everything up nicely. Then they gave me some free bread as an apology for the mixup. The bread is nothing great, unfortunately. I will dock a point or so for lack of a free water option. I hate that. I should never have to pay for water in a sit down restaurant. It is tacky. Even if they do not, a complementary tea would work too. It just seems this restaurant favors takeout, which again, is a shame considering I liked the food. The staff were friendly as well despite the mishap. I cannot say whether I will be back, but I can say that the food is good and worth stopping in for if you want a hearty meal. read more

I can't recommend Dunya enough if you're in or around Kensington. The mantu is a must, and if you have a group of at least 3-4, I recommend ordering multiple servings because everyone will gobble these dumplings up. They're so comforting and delicious, filled with ground beef and doused in lamb gravy and yogurt sauce (or you can get a vegetarian version). The Afghan salad, a refreshing lemony mix of tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions, is a great side dish to get your veggies in. For heftier entrees, it's impossible to go wrong with any of the kababs. I've had the salmon, the boneless chicken thigh, the boneless chicken breast, and the lamb. The meats are all perfectly seasoned and juicy. moist and juicy and flavorful meats, complemented by the rice and sweetness of carrots and raisins. I also recommend using a liberal amount of the sauces they provide. The cilantro chutney's my favorite, but the red sauce and yogurt sauce are also tasty. If you're in the mood for tea, $4 will yield a shareable teapot. I'm also partial to the doogh, a refreshing and savory yogurt drink. And on my most recent visit, our waiter was so nice and gave the four of us a complimentary firnee, a custard made with sweet milk, cinnamon, rose water, and cardamom. It was delicious, creamy with a gingery zing. Even though our bellies were full to the brim, we couldn't let this go to waste. read more

The vegetarian sampler is delicious. The rice is rich without feeling greasy. The eggplant is decadent, and the spinach is perfectly cooked. The okra is surprisingly flavorful. Without being spicy (hot) or overly salted, this is a meal that tastes as amazing as it smells. Eat here with kindly, attentive service, or order to go. This is mostly a meat restaurant, but it's still worth it for vegetarians. Oh, and leave some room for the rice pudding! read more

Place feels very authentic and service was ok. We got a few apps, the naan and 2 kabab meals. The hummus was pretty bland, though worked well with the hot sauce provided. The afghan naan was super hot, but hardened very quickly and after 5-10 minutes it was like a very dry toast The mandu was delightful, the best bite of the night. The dark chicken kababs were OK, nothing special, and the lamb kababs were a bit on the tough side. And hard to eat as no knives are provided For us was decent but def not worth the hype the other reviews seem to imply read more

Tl;dr: What an exceptional meal! So much flavor and depth in the food. Dunya is certainly a restaurant that you should put high on your to-try list. Long Winded Version: Food: 10/5 The food is amazing. All the dishes bring bold flavors and pleasing hints of spices to your mouth for all your tastebuds to enjoy. Dunya really opened my eyes (and stomach) to how delicious and comforting Afghan food is. I've tried the lamb shank and definitely recommend this as a must have. The mixed meats plate is also solid. Location: 2.5/5 It's on the automotive services side of Coney Island. Less scenic, more industrial. But that's good. For me. I live close and love that I get to enjoy it. Alas, if you're commuting there, there's a bus but not much more. I'd opt to drive there if you're not in walking distance. In closing, the location is meh, but the journey is so well worth it. Atmosphere / Ambiance: 3.5/5 It's humble, chill and casual. No thrills would be the best short description but the restaurant is clean, bright and provides an atmosphere you can be relaxed in and enjoy some great food. Dress comfortable and enjoy breaking bread amongst peoples from varying ethnicities. Quality: 5/5 The food is fresh and delivered to the table nice and hot. You can taste the quality in the meats and sauces. Value: 5/5 A meal here won't break the bank. The portions are generous and you'll leave extremely satisfied. Special Shout Out to fellow Yelper!, foodie extraordinaire and just all around dope human being Danesh I. for treating my partner and I to dinner her. We ordered from here beforehand and it was amazing - dinning in and your company was even better! read more

On this quiet stretch of urban sprawl that is Coney Island Avenue, tucked between tire shops and gas stations is this homey Afghan restaurant. It's filled at all hours of the day with families chowing down on hearty, delicious dishes made with soul and after both of my meals here I was already planning my next visit. I like to start my meal here with some bolani, a fried flatbread stuffed with pumpkin, leeks, or meat. They have an assorted platter filled with all of the above, and the exterior is crispy and goes really well with the yogurt sauce they offer on the side. Alternatively or as a complement to this dish it's nice to start with some of their thin skinned dumplings, called manti, which remind me of wontons except theirs are filled with ground lamb, beef, or chicken. Dumplings are present in so many different cuisines and as someone who grew up eating Chinese dumplings I love the familiarity and simultaneous newness of Afghan manti. For my main, I enjoy their salmon, cooked to perfection on a grill and arrives with a smoky char and impeccably cooked interior. It's served on a bed of their buttery, pillow Afghan rice (pulao), which has caramelized slivers of carrots and raisins, giving the rice a nice added sweetness. All the while I'm enjoying bites of their fresh salad, with diced cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, carrots, and aromatics. I also recommend their lentil soup, which is so soothing, full of flavor, and completely vegetarian. If you have a sweet tooth their firni is a rosewater rice pudding that doesn't feel too rich or heavy. The owner, Mo, is always on site and has so much passion for hospitality and telling a story through his food. Please support this local business so they can continue to host so many diners with love, care, and food that feels like home. read more

Nothing special, the food was cooked well but nothing was seasoned. I've never had a meal with no flavor. Even the rice was unseasoned. Looks like brown long grained basmati, did not come with carrots and raisins like the picture. The garden salad was super fresh with fresh tomatoes and crisp cucumbers with a nice dressing. The chicken thigh kebabs were kind of dry to be honest, not moist as raved about in other reviews and very underseasoned as well. The meal was not worth the price at all. There are so many other great restaurants in Kensington, Brooklyn, this is the most expensive for its south central Asian cuisine for which there is an abundance of restaurants being at least 4 directly across the street such as Pakistani Mashalla Restaurant, Gyro Cafe and Jalsa east Indian down the block. I grew up right around the corner and this is the 1st and last time I waste money there. Way too many tastier and reasonably priced eats over here. We even have a Tibetan restaurant. read more

Great Afghan restaurant! Brooklyn has some amazing food and it's only getting better. Dunya Kabab House has delicious food and generous portions; the people who work there are very polite and professional. The Afghan white sauce is amazing, wish they sold it by the bottle. The green sauce is delicious too and goes well with the kababs. I tried 1) The salmon kabab. Included nice large fish pieces and deliciously seasoned rice. 2) The Mantu dumplings, vegan option. It comes with lamb gravy but they also offer a vegan version. Tasty and filling. 3) A simple salad, but the white sauce really adds flavor. If you're tired of the same old salad, suggest trying it with their sauce. 4) Firnee for dessert. This sweet yet light custard with cinnamon, rose water and cardamom is one of my favorites. I've tried many different versions over the years and this has to be one of the best yet. It was very filling, I had it with some tea. I'm glad I chose this instead of the usual baklava, although I'm sure that's great too. I enjoyed the food so much that I called the restaurant to thank them! Giving a five star review is easy. Happy I found it, thanks to Yelp & the other reviewers here. read more

I attended a Yelp event a while back and that's how I learn about this restaurant. Their food was so good that I decided to go back to check them out on my own. By far their food tasted much better then the first time. I ended up ordering their lamb chop kabab over afghan rice and it was fantastic. The plate also comes with a side order of salad so that was refreshing. My lamb was cooked to profession. The meat was flavorful and moist. Every bite complimented well with the rice and I especially enjoy the sweetness of the raison that have a hint of cardamom. Service wise, everyone was friendly. I love the open kitchen so you can see inside. This shows confident from a restaurant owner because they have nothing to hide. The restaurant was pretty crowded and I do hope they gain even more popularity. Their food was a treat and I definitely look to coming back as I don't live too far from them. read more

Great spot! Worth the trip! Clean, inviting interior. Simple decor and nice art on wall. Kind and helpful server. Very interesting and wide ranging menu. Sides of sauces were fresh, flavorful and zesty. The salad was crisp, cold and ever so lightly dressed with herbs. Even the lemon I asked for to accompany my water was a generous portion of half a lemon, thinly sliced. Nice! Not wanting to miss out and not really knowing what I wanted I ordered the mixed kabob. Pieces of lamb, chicken and beef kefta. Wonderful meal. Just a bit on pricey side but worth it. Great spot to get to. Come out to Brooklyn! read more

I first ate here through a Yelp Elite event and after trying a variety of wonderfully delicious Afghani dishes, I KNEW I had to return. Less than two weeks later, I kept my word and came back. I brought my partner with me this time, so that he could experience everything he missed out on. Ordering as a self-proclaimed "pro" (it was his first time having Afghan food), I got us the following: Bolani Gandana ($6.99) - omg these are basically Chinese-style scallion pancakes. A bit crispier and dipped in a white sauce, they are heavenly and addicting. He inhaled 3 pieces (there are 6 total) while I was still on my first. Mantu ($6.99) - reminiscent of Chinese-style wontons (shape and texture) but probably tastes more like beef ravioli. This blend of cultures is *chef's kiss* Mixed Afghan Kabab w/ Qabuli ($22.99) - to try a variety of kababs: chicken, lamb and beef. All very tasty ESPECIALLY with the qabuli aka Afghan rice. Absolutely a must-get here; highly recommend upgrading your platter to include the qabuli. We didn't finish this one, but we're sooo excited about the leftovers we get to enjoy at home this week. Uzbeki Qabuli Pulao ($20.99) - just WOW. Blew me away the first time, and again the second time. This dish is like the above, but instead of the kababs you get a huuuge lamb shank that is so incredibly tender. Fall off the bone to the point where it's difficult to even pick up the meat with a fork. No gaminess at all and just pure deliciousness. Even more amazing with the white sauce. The quality of food here is A+ and the prices are very reasonable. My partner was thoroughly impressed as well and this will definitely become one of our go-to spots. read more

Having stopped in once before, I knew Mohammed at the front counter would be friendly and welcoming and that the restaurant would be spotlessly clean. I ordered meat mantu dumplings to bring home. When I got home they were still warm and and absolutely delicious with a thin skin, a nice balance of seasonings in the filling and a savory sauce.
