Both were very flavorful and of course, I smothered it with the almighty white sauce. Disclaimer: my review is based off of takeout orders.. My book club ordered the Family platter and honestly, we were all blown away! Since then, I've been ordering from Uber eats. Don't judge me... I ordered the chicken over rice. It came up to about $11-12 with card. I was surprised how heavy the tray of food was. A comparable platter at Shah's Halal is way lighter. They definitely pack the tray with a lot of rice and chicken. However, quantity does not mean quality. And I think they failed with executing this dish. The chicken was very dry and had 0 flavor. Chicken over rice platters are usually prepared using chicken thigh, which is naturally juicier and more flavorful. But they totally used the chicken breast tikka kebab and chopped it up. The rice was fine. Signature afghan brown rice. Salad comes with lettuce, pickled, red onions (Salty), cucumbers and tomatoes. The food on it's own is FLAVORLESS. Pouring white sauce is the only way to eat this and to add some moisture to the food, which is VERY DRY. I must say their white sauce is very good. Better than Shah's. This place caught my attention while watching a couple feature this restaurant on a YouTube short.(DevourpowerTV) The owner Hash is such an Awesome gentleman, he was very patient in explaining all the differences and nuances between the kababs. We had a delightful culinary afghan experience that offered a rich tapestry of spices, flavors and textures. One standout dish is the mantoo dumplings, filled with seasoned chicken meat and topped with a savory garlic white yogurt and a tomato-based sauce with chick peas. We ordered the chicken and beef kofta platters and the 3 chapli platter. The food has a mix of savory and mild spices making it a perfect dish for all palate types. Hash said If you want it spicy they definitely can light your taste buds on fire. They have a private lot so parking is not an issue. There is no server to take your order. Just place your order at the counter and find a table, they will bring it over. When you're finished, clean up after yourself and throw out your trash in the designated area. NOTE: There is a 20% service charge added to your bill when dining in with a party of 3 or more people. It's posted on the front cover of the menu. I know times are tough, but a little steep when there really is not a server taking care of you as we know it. It's definitely worth the hype and the price. I really like this spot for a more casual Afghan dining experience. While I think the kebabs and main entrees are tasty, they remind me of halal cart like food and didn't have the subtlety of afghan meat seasoning. They had a very tasty mantoo though and it was vegetarian friendly which is tough to find with such a meat-heavy food culture. Theirs used squash instead of meat and was slightly sweet from the squash which contrasted nicely with the tangy yogurt. Would definitely go back and try more dishes! read more

For dinner with the family I'm going to give this place four stars easily service was good. We got seated. Immediately. Tables were clean so we're the dishes and things we had two appetizers. One was some dumplings with yogurt sauce on top and the other was a pancake of fried pancake with a potato filling they were both excellent & came out quickly And then I had the chicken & beef kofta which came with rice and salad. Came here for date night for an early dinner. When we came in around 6p, there was plenty of seating, but within 30 minutes of sitting, the place was packed for dinner. The takeout counter was constantly busy with orders and we quickly found out why! This mom-n-pop Afghani restaurant in Hicksville, seasons and grills their meats to perfection. The bf and I were starving so we ordered the Mixed Kabab Platter which comes with 1 Chicken tikka, 1 Lamb tikka, 1 Chicken Kofta, 1 Beef Kofta and 2 lamb chops over a massive plate of rice. It was plenty for the two of us and even had some left over to go. The servers were very attentive and respectful. Saw this place on social media or newsday (I forget) and decided to give it a try. It did not disappoint; not so much a restaurant but more of a take out place with the option to sit down - there were 9-10 tables. The mantu were delicious as were the entrees - we had the lamb tikka and the beef kebab both with kubli. Portions were generous and prices very reasonable. This is the 4th time I have this place a try. The first 3 times was a year ago I stopped going because the food was not good. I decided to give it a try 2 days ago and it's actually worse than it was a year ago. The flavor is not there kabab's are over cooked and it gets extremely dry. You charge $17 but give 8 small pieces of meat. It felt like I was eating onion,lettuce and rice. I ordered chicken tenders and fries for my kids and tell me why it tasted rubbery. This is exteremely frustrating. I never leave bad reviews but you guys have to step it up. If I am spending $80 for 2 adults and 1 kids and food tastes like garbage it should either have amazing taste or should have quantity. You didn't have neither. The family combos are primarily good for those who want more chicken but the lamb and beef is where its at so we ordered a bunch of separate dishes and had them put it all in one tray. Chicken Kebab: 4/5 Beef Kofta: 4;5 Chicken Kofta: 2/5, overly salty and overcooked Kabuli Pulao: 5/5 Mantu: 4/5 Bolani: 1/5, insanely overpriced for the amount they give with barely a teaspoon worth of potato Overall the entree kebabs and pulao were good, would definitely come back here for those. I tried this place when it first opened 3 yrs ago and it wasn't that good. Unfortunately, not much has changed. The food was better, but just ok. The chicken was rubbery and bland. The beef kofta had a wierd taste to it, almost as if it meat had gone bad b4 it was cooked. I brought leftovers for my mom and she said the same. It was only edible doused with lots of sauce. Even the sauces, the red and green, were bland, not spicy and flavorful. The salad on top was not fresh. I have been to really good afghan restaurants b4, like Samis in astoria. I've been going to Balkh in astoria for 2 decades now, and this place doesn't compare. There's also numerous afghan places in Hicksville that are much better quality. Oh and guess how much this one platter ended costing me, one person? 30 bucks. 16ish for the platter, 3 for kabuli topping (ridiculous), about 2 dollars for tax, a secret service charge, and then 15% tip, all came to 28 something dollars. For that price, I could've dined at a much fancier place with better quality food. I feel ripped off. read more

My brother and I have been coming to Kandahar Grill for many years now we are practically a regular. The food and the correlation of my frequent visits speaks for its self. The food is very very flavourful and good. I have tried many other afghani food all over nyc and the island but this place brings me back every time. The staff is great, moheed who has been our server for sometime is a delight and a wonderful server. Not worth it. Don't recommend. Quality of food was not that good. Poor service and they charge 18% service fees. I wouldn't go back.

I'm kind of confused about the other ratings here. We ordered some takeout in the early evening; everything was delicious and the staff was super friendly. The mantu was well spiced and super comforting and the lamb pulao was so tender. I'm normally not a fan of chapli kebab but I actually enjoyed their version of it. I went a few days after the grand opening. The interior was nicely decorated and very clean. When looking at the menu, the food was reasonably priced. I got beef kabab over rice and also chicken and beef over rice. Food was delicious. The beef kabab melts in your mouth. I've been coming here since they've opened and have had great service, a clean environment, and more importantly great food every time. I made a catering order the day before an event, for 50+ people, and they were very accommodating. The food was freshly made and they even added some desserts as a kind gesture! The chicken tikka is amazing, its my go-to at this place. Also HIGHLY recommend getting the mantoo; its the best kept secret here. Only critique I can think of: hot sauce is sweeter than I'm used to. First off I never write reviews, although the service was fine, but the issue is the quality of the food didn't match its ridiculous price. I for one wanted to try the this place despite all the negative reviews about this resturant. Me and my friend both ordered wings as a appetizer and lamb chops. Our initial reaction to food we were really disappointed because it was nearly burnt and very dry. There was nothing special about the dish at all it was below average at best. And when it came time to pay they had charged us 20 dollars over our bill. For the amount of food we got it was around 67 dollars but we were charged 86 dollars. And spending this much money for a meal we didn't enjoy. Just seems like a giant waste of time, there are much better Afghan Resturants in the area I probably would never eat here again. read more

The rice seemed okay but the meats were not properly cooked. They should make reasonable prices if their food is not giving full potential.
