Mango juice was fine, but had to skip dessert options because we were watching our sugar intake. Decor is beautiful. The booth near the store front is a bit drafty. I came here for the first time with a few friends as a group of 4 on a Sunday evening and it was surprisingly packed for a restaurant that seemed to be tucked away on a quiet street. The ambiance felt very homey and family styled upon coming in. Now I don't know much about Afghan food so I can't speak to the authenticity of the food but I sure did enjoy it! My friend always talked highly about this place and he'd compare this to halal if you're looking for meat, rice and that white sauce! I ordered the combination #3 rice platter that had chicken breast, lamb chops and kofta. It also came with a small salad as an appetizer (not really a fan as there was no dressing, just some plain greens) However, the rice platter was pretty fantastic. I enjoyed the flavors and the tenderness of all the meat. The white sauce gave flavor to the rice so it wasn't too dry. Considering that I was very hungry that day, I could've ate more so I wish they put a little more meat on the plate but overall I was very satisfied. Choopan is always a hit or miss depending on the day you go. I used to come here when I was younger and the food and service was great. As I got older, I felt like the service deteriorated as did the food. The last few times I've gotten choopan, my chicken had been undercooked. This happened with every take out order- chicken would be undercooked. Sometimes when I would go and eat in person it would be amazing. Most times not. Their bolani (potato) is a must get and their white sauce is on point. Their red sauce used to be amazing but they changed the recipe and now it's whatever. I hate when I'm ordering take out and ask for red sauce, because their response is that "they don't have small sides of red sauce" when in actuality, you need to purchase the small (or large) containers of the sauce. If I'm paying for a meal I should be allowed to get the sauces that are on the table, in my bag. Like I said it's a hit or miss. read more

I ordered a huge order from here for the first time and boy was I left satisfied. I ordered a family meal pack for 8, and I swear within 25 minutes everything was ready and more!! I called ahead to the owner (I believe), and he kindly too my order and let me know the total price ahead of time! Once I got their I was kindly greeted. They have a huge plastic wall between them and the customer which is super safe, also the entire staff was wearing gloves and masks! He asked me my name and even made small talk! He was super kind. I paid l, and he even gave me an extra free order of appetizer which was so sweet! Prices are sooo reasonable for the amount of food you get. As for the quality and taste of the food itself, it was amazing. The rice was so perfectly food and seasoned right (its a big portion)! The lamb tikka kebab was cooked for perfect and nice and spicy! The beef kofta was ok, a bit on the drier side, but the white sauce is so delish and tangy that I didnt even mind at all! Love this place and cannot wait t order takeout again! Amazing food! The meat is delicately cooked so the chicken came out perfectly tender. Even the rice tastes great, even by itself. Mina, who was our waiter was phenomenal. We were indecisive about what to order and she took authority and recommended dishes and to share them. I have 3 main issues. 1. I ordered Kidney Beans Lobiya. These are straight up pinto beans. Who are they kidding???! 2. I originally was going to order online but decided to order in store because I was already so close to the location. I ordered and compared prices on their restaurant's website and it was a difference of $5. I showed the guy and he said prices go up and the their website needs to be updated. I said okay fine and paid cash. The guy then says okay okay I give you $2 back extra change because he just wanted to round out the amount. ***what??!!!*** why couldn't you just honor your online prices and make sure to change your website after me??? Just like most other afghan food places they start you off with a plate of salad. One of the waitresses came around fairly quickly giving us enough time to glance at the menu and decide what we wanted which I really appreciated because sometimes waitresses in other places don't come back till 20 mins after seating you. The food unfortunately took a long time to come (755ish) which was definitely not an acceptable time, I wish she told us earlier that something had gone wrong with the ordered and they had to redo it (minus half a star) but they did make up for it by giving us samosas on the house which were delicious. Their chicken breasts stole the show for me it was cooked to perfection juicy and flavorful. The lamb was average. The server was extremely nice and patient when it came to us picking what wanted to eat. Since we were a kind of a large party we order the party of 6 with lamb and chicken, it also came with rice. Their portions are huge, the party of 6 fed our party of 6 twice. We also split an appetizer, I don't remember the name, however it was a chicken dumpling, yum. The reason for the 5 stars is because the parking was decent, there was no wait for a party of 6, the service was great, the food was amazing, and the price was affordable. I previously gave Kabab King (Hicksville) a 4 star rating purely on the quality of its food and ignoring the terrible service. If that is my standard for Afghan restaurants, then Choopan needs 6 or 7 stars. The food was fantastic. Better than Kabab King (which I'll use as a base). The rice was tasty and not oily (as KK's is), and the actual kebabs were succulent and well cooked. The only caveat I'll add is that you need to tell the waiter that you want your lamb chops cooked medium if you want medium. The default seems to be well done. It is a small, suitably lit, nicely decorated and family-owned Afghani restaurant.Upon arrival do not park in the adjacent parking lot or you will be towed.There is a large municipal lot across the street which should have many spaces available. Park there instead. Upon arrival, I was greeted,seated promptly and supplied with a pitcher of water. The restaurant was empty as it had just opened at 11;30 p.m., too early for many to lunch but not me since I skipped breakfast in anticipation of this meal. After a cursory glance at the menu, I ordered quickly : the Qabuli Palow ($13.00--Lamb Shank buried under Afghani Brown Rice with Carrots and Raisins) based on praise for this dish by other Yelpers. While I was waiting a very short time for my order, the personable owner and I made small talk. He had his son take a photo of the two of us in front of two of the restaurant's nice plaques.The photo will never see the light of day since I'm unshaven and a little too casually dressed. My salad arrived quickly. It had fresh lettuce and cucumbers and was the perfect size for the massive entree which appeared shortly thereafter.While some commented upon the saltiness of the white sauce dressing, it was in my wheelhouse and I enjoyed both the salad and the dressing. My entree was humongous.The amply sized lamb shank was completely buried and hidden beneath a massive mound of Afghani Brown Rice(Basmati......not the leaden tasteless fiber-rich stuff that the health nuts insist upon).Both the lamb and the rice were very moist. The shank was very mildly-spiced but delicious. The lamb meat was perfectly cooked to a falling off the bone consistency.Since I have only eaten Afghan food sporadically, except for the many luscious brownies I consumed in college, I cannot say whether mild spicing is characteristic of the chef or Afghani cuisine in general but the spice level did not detract from how much I enjoyed my entree. I had mango juice ($2.00) to wash down the lamb and rice. The juice was nice and refreshing. After I finished my meal, the owner, in an allusion to the authenticity of the restaurant's food, said that he saved me the expense of a ticket to Afghanistan. Since I did not observe any Taliban while I was at Choopan Grill, I'd say he was right. A note to social drinkers and buzz seekers: Choopan Grill neither serves alcohol or permits BYOB. No concern to me because the great meal I had on 2/6 is reason enough to return to this restaurant. Absolutely delicious! I came for lunch at about 11:20 and the person at the counter seemed surprised to see me. I said that i thought they opened for lunch at 11 and he said that they were "running a bit late". I was the only customer for quite a while. My initial concerns were quickly set aside when i tasted the pumpkin Bolani! To die for - crispy, hot, with a very tasty pumpkin filling. There were two pieces and i could have eaten two more. I ordered the beef kabobs with rice and salad. The rice was moist snd flavorful as were the kabobs. I ate every morsel! I spoke with the host about people i knew from Afghanistan and their wonderful hospitality and how much I enjoyed the food. Along with my bill, he brought me a complimentary dessert -custard with coconut and ground pistachios. It, too, was very delicious. Food quality/quantity has gone down especially the chicken within the past 5 years. The menu is still affordable ranging from $10-$16 for grill combo entrees.
