I got the chicken box and of the three available sides (salad, yellow rice, fries) chose the rice and sides. The most delicious garlic cream sauce is drizzled over everything, though you can get extra sauce for $1 if you want more than just a drizzle. You can also get some spicy sauce for the same price, which does not come standard with the box. I didn't try the spicy stuff, but I would next time. The rice and the crunchy, shoestring-style spiced fries were great, but of course the biggest star of the box was the ridiculously tender chicken. It reminded me of halal street meat, but it's maybe even juicier and more succulent. Minor notes: The chicken was slightly, just slightly, over salted. If you're walking past 14th Street-Union Square, you might come across this unassuming spot. Döner Haus is a German-style döner kebab stand serving halal chicken and beef. The logo looks like Porn Hub... I ordered the Munch Box, and for around $12, it looked small at first, but it was surprisingly filling and packed with a solid amount of protein. My food was ready in less than 10 minutes of ordering it. When I ordered, it wasn't busy. The quality of the meat stood out to me--it tasted fresh, well-seasoned, and overall pretty good for the price point. The fries, however, were forgettable. The portion felt small, though that didn't bother me as much as the flavor. They had a curry-turmeric style seasoning that just didn't land for me. I've visited twice so far with my German boyfriend, and according to him, this is the closest to the real deal that we've tried in NYC. Of course, that's not to say it's exactly authentic, but out of a collection of places we've visited, I agree this tasted the best. This Döner Haus location is not properly a restaurant but a takeout window with two rickety standing tables on the sidewalk in front of it. You can order on a touch screen or with the help of a cashier, and the food takes around 10 minutes to be ready, from my experience. On my first visit, I ordered the chicken döner sandwich. Like others have said, they really pack the bread with filling (which I like!) but the sauce can make it fall apart, so be sure to keep your fork handy. The second time we went, I ordered the beef on a platter over a mix of fries and salad, and I think I enjoyed that more than the sandwich because it was easier to eat. It was also a lot of food! I was excited to have leftovers the next day, but then my new roommate ate it, LOL. (I guess that alone proves it was good.) Döner Haus is insanely delicious. I got a chicken Döner Box with salad. The sauce that they put on it is beautifully garlicky, and the chicken is flavorful and cooked to perfection. I am going to Germany next week so I wanted to try this out to compare for my future trip. I showed my friend this and she already noticed many differences between this and authentic döner from Berlin. She told me they usually use lamb not beef and that the price here is double the price in Germany. I wanted to try it anyway even if it's not as authentic as what the store seems to portray it to be. The breading could hardly contain it. My friend told me the bread is thinner than she'd get. It seems everything is just cheaper in quality but more expensive in price here. The bread was way too oily too and some parts of it were kind of hard or too chewy. The meat tasted like the lamb/beef from halal carts. Honestly - WOW. I got a beef doner box and a chicken one (the owner's recommendation was the chicken). At first I was perturbed at the size considering the box already comes with fries. You look inside and there's a HEFTY amount of beef on top of thin cut fries and salad on the side. My first bite had beef with sauce and a fry too - wow. So freaking tasty!!! I love me a cream sauce, and it really makes the bite flavorful, especially with the spice blend they have. I think it's a paprika, so I'm glad I got the spicy instead of the non spicy. The chicken is just as good. The salad it comes with is pretty essential to take a break from the carby heavy goodness. This is a perfect drunchies OR hangover food, although I'd def have to share it with probably 1 other person lol. I have to remember to ask for more sauce!!! Doener Haus delivers on value first and flavor second. This is a great place to get a filling meal for under twenty bucks. The flavor was not quite on point as I recalled from my time in Germany, but it is far from flavorless. I had the chicken and beef box with a small salad and fries AND a coke for twenty bucks. They don't skimp on the onions or tomatoes. There is a dressing for the salad too. This is a take out place with a giant window facing the sidewalk, which must be rather chilly for those who work there. The bottom line is this is a to-go place and you would be advised to eat as soon as possible, which is more tenable when the weather warms and you can eat right there where they have a few standing tables on the sidewalk. The Doener sandwich wedge might even taste better, with more focus on the meat. That's worth a revisit. Three stars read more
