I thoroughly enjoyed how much this place was a cozy dungeon vibe. It smelled of fireplace and charred wood which was an immediate turn-on for vibes. + a review said to grab a reservation, so we did. Unsure how much we needed to for a Sunday night. Our server was very knowledgeable and gave us a breakdown of practically everything on the menu (we were as familiar with the place). Her explanations were done well. + I would have liked her to check in on us more. At first bite, and then a little later. She came back to check in when we were practically ready for dessert and determined we needed some condiments for our meals -- they were almost finished. The food looks really good and lacks an element of seasoning. We are big pasta people so we enjoy robust flavors and richness. While it wasn't lacking in richness, we needed something else to tie everything in. My Shrimp pasta was spicy (as we were told) but it seemed like the spice was intended to carry the dish. The shaved Parmesan was a nice touch but lacked again in flavor profile. It might've been an oversight but my noodles were on the harder side most of the time bites. The Papperdelle as the same.. they might be leaning on the nuance and forgetting to bring in more boldness with the flavors. The Lemon ricotta ravioli looks like it's a fan fave so I plan to go back and try that and maybe the spumoni sundae. 10/10 for the tiramisu!

Loved our meal here! We sat at the bar since we got on the Yelp Waitlist a little too late for a table, but the bar service was great. We ordered some glasses of wine, a pasta entree, and a pizza. Ambiance is great for a date night! There's table options and plenty of bar seating. Plus you get to see the kitchen in action from your seat.

Went again. It's STILL a five! Service was impeccable. Not so loud because we were in the back, in a booth. Tried new things from the menu, and loved ALL of it.

Amazing spot for drinks, food, and atmosphere. Dark basement pub that feels modern and cozy. Our server was a gem -- always checking on us and giving great suggestions. Pizze was fired to perfection with ample toppings and sauce. Appetizers always on point. Definitely come for happy hour!

My husband discovered Basso's Happy Hour and couldn't wait to invite a group of friends. The $10 burger and fries is amazingly good. It is made with a higher grade of ground beef and garnished with giardeniera relish, fontina and crispy onions. Highly recommend. Others tried the meatballs and cannelloni dip. Then we decided to order desserts and share them around the table. Tiramisu, cannolis and the vanilla chiffon cake that has a coconut crème layers. Yum! The restaurant is located in the basement. Cozy and low lighting. Gas lanterns light the room. Service was great. We will be back for more of those burgers and fries!

Went for Happy Hour on a Wednesday late afternoon. People were already waiting outside for the opening. The basement setting has an upscale quality to its casual vibe. The menu for happy hour is small. The burger is the attraction for that menu. The other choices are small plates, and some wine, beer and cocktails. Might not want to skip dessert, especially the tiramisu! Was looking forward to a Sangiovese wine choice which was on the website happy hour menu, but not offered once we got there. Place fills up quickly and gets happy and loud.

First time here and was impressed overall with the cozy dark vibe and espresso martini. The martini was 10 out of 10 a true classic espresso martini. We went with a larger group so we could not be seated at a normal table, we were placed in the lounge area with couches and a coffee table to eat our meal. I was thankful they were able to accommodate our group same day, but it would've been more relaxed and enjoyable if we were actually at a table. The food was underwhelming, we got the gnocchi and pepperoni pizza, our group got the lemon ravioli and the emo cover band pizza and cesar salad. Nobody raved about the food, and according to part of our group who'd be there before, this night was a miss... our server was very nice and dealt with a larger group well, it was just extremely slow so we were able to get in a lot of conversation. Overall, would be back, with smaller group so we could actually enjoy the restaurant vibe.

This place is awesome!!! Angela was our server and took such good care of us and did an excellent wine service! We got the calamari, casa ensalada, and cauliflower to start and it was so fresh and delicious and we ate every last bite! The ambiance was cozy and intimate which made for a great spot for a talk with a good friend! The star of the show was the prosciutto and fig pizza which was a great mix of sweet, salty, and spicy???! AMAZING! I will for sure come back thank you for having us!

Basso is always a go-to spot for a nice Italian dinner with that cozy, darker vibe. I usually end up here for my birthday or a friend's, and it never disappoints. The menu has something for everyone, which is great since a lot of my friends can be picky eaters. I highly recommend giving Basso a try at least once. It's consistently a good experience and one of my go-to spots in the city. I also can't forget about the service. For my birthday, we came in a little close to closing, but the staff was super kind and never made us feel rushed. They even helped bring out my cake and cut it up for everyone, which made the night feel extra special. Plus, the photos came out amazing Definitely recommend checking Basso out at least once--it's a safe bet for good food, good vibes, and a great experience.

Have been wanting to come here for forever! Super glad I had the ability to come with a friend who was visiting from out of town. We got drinks, an appetizer, and two pastas! The service wasn't super quick but we were seated right away without a reservation on a Sunday night. Parking was easy to find too in the parking lot. It is in the basement and I'm not sure if they have an elevator. The food was all super good and the drinks were the best part. The dining room was a bit dark though.

YUUUUM! 1st time here, came for a friend's birthday, and had the best time. We had the cutest & coziest lounge seating, the friendliest server Alec, and all around fantastic food and drink. Very pleased with the drink selection, and even more pleased with the appetizers offered. Delicious bread, roasted veggies, and small plates. The mushrooms on the steak I ordered were phenomenal.

I was really excited about Basso and a little let down by our evening. The space is cool, it's like an underground bar located next to the Starbucks , it's a little dark and the flame / candle holder near us was not working and unfortunately making a zapping sound right above us all night Our server was sweet and helpful and the food didn't take too long to come out once we ordered . We had the Carpaccio , truffle fries, lemon ricotta ravioli and Mafalada. The carpaccio was good overall, a little hard to eat how it was presented. Everything else just didn't come out hot. Our fries were cold and kinda tasted stale or old, we asked for hot fries and they brought out more and unfortunately they still didn't taste all that good, I wonder if they make their own fries? Our pasta was also not hot. It was made well, the sauce on both was good. The Mafalda had good flavor and the Ravioli was very lemony, but it was all too luke warm. A disappointing night....

That's the vibe. We started on the front patio on a Friday night and quickly realized we'd made a mistake. The doors to the interior were open and the music -- a rock-forward playlist that night -- was loud enough that we considered bailing. Our server, was unbothered when we asked to move up to the rooftop. Where we met with a new bartender and server, London, who rolled with it, got us resettled, and from that point on the night was great. London was clearly handling the bar and most of the rooftop tables, but she was attentive throughout, and made eye contact, which seems a near miracle from many 20-something these days. Bumping the score up just for the flexibility on the table move alone. The food: crab cakes were genuinely good, not life-changing, but well above the weak-crab-cake bar that exists in most of the world, served simply with capers and a small salad. I went off-script and ordered the wagyu burger medium rare with fontina (London mentioned cheddar is the more common pick, but the Fontina offerd a great alternative). The burger was deeply flavorful and cooked exactly right, but here's my one real note for the kitchen: toast the brioche bun. Wagyu medium-rare puts out a lot of juice, and an untoasted bun loses its structural integrity about three bites in. A quick toast would let the bun keep some additional integrate and keep up with the perfectly cooked beef. The pom buff were great, the best elevated patato tots you may come by. Beyond what we ordered, the Greek salad is a longtime go-to -- chopped, with grape leaves and pita, available in a small or large, and easily dressed up into a light meal with or without adding some protein or can be share as a self-dress bruschetta appetizer for the group if you ask for extra bread. The cheese boards are also a reliable pick. The wine list is extensive (it's a wine bar, after all), but they don't sniff at cocktails -- I had a solid fine old fashioned, and my wife shared had a Malbec that paired well with everything. Lots of gluten-free options across the menu, too. What Sasha's gets right is that it has refused to become precious. "Wine bar" reads as pretentious to some people, but this place runs as a neighborhood spot. You'll see college kids dressed way down, couples on dates dressed way up, Hawaiian shirts, oversized sweaters, the full range. It's the kind of place where you can split a bottle with your girlfriends, meet a date for drinks and a quick bite without committing to a full dinner, or roll in for brunch on the weekend. Different times of day, different vibes -- always approachable. 4.7 stars. Loses a few tenths for the front-patio music situation and the weak burger bun, but more than makes up for it on flexibility, food, and overall hang factor.

When we were finally seated, we were placed in direct sun. I asked if we could move to a shaded table in the corner and was told it was only for parties of three. After explaining we'd just be there briefly for a drink, we were allowed to sit there, but the interaction felt dismissive. From that point on, the experience felt rushed. We were pushed to order quickly, our menus were taken right away, and the check came almost immediately. It made what should have been a relaxed stop feel uncomfortable and transactional. I understand how busy restaurants can get, especially on nice days, but a little more consideration and courtesy would have gone a long way.

Both the apple dish and soup were really good. It's street parking but there's lots of spots in the area. The bathroom is super nice with hairspray and mints if needed. Nice place for a good meal.

I asked for ketchup with my burger, and it didn't arrive until after I had already finished eating. Overall, the service was very poor. Unfortunately, the food was also extremely salty -- and we're people who normally enjoy salt. I had the Farmhouse Burger with Brussels sprouts and mac and cheese, while my wife ordered the steak and fries cooked medium well. The steak came out medium rare, and both her fries and my burger and Brussels sprouts were overly salted. The one bright spot was the mac and cheese, which we took to go. My daughter tried some and said it was the best she'd ever had. To top it off, our bill came to an even $100 with tip, and all we had were waters and the items mentioned above. We had been wanting to try Retreat for quite a while, so this experience was very disappointing. Between the poor service and underwhelming food, we probably won't be coming back.

I got the 4-way appetizers and my favorites were the Onion Jam and Fava Goat Cheese and the Liver Corn cookie. They were definitely the stars of the night. I tried almost all the options for the courses. My recommendation would be White Asparagus Soup, Lamb and Garlic, Fresh Cheese Dumplings, Roast Chicken and Lemon Semifreddo. The vibe here is nice. Perfect for date nights. I knocked off a star because I wasn't blown away by some of the dishes.

A small plates restaurant that felt a little Italian. We make reservations and show up to this place that looks like a neighborhood pub. Quaint, in the corner, inviting light shining through medium sized windows. Inside, the vibes were a hybrid of someone's very nice dining room and an old western saloon. I know that's almost nonsensical, but the vibes were good. We felt right at home. Service was spot on. The server was very nice and new the menu pretty well. The food came out tapas style, so when something was ready, it just came right out. I like that. I like the periods where there are so many plates on the table at one time that it's overwhelming. What's what eating is all about. As for the food itself, it was good. I'll give a little blurb on each thing, as not to wear out your eyeballs. Crispy Artichokes (sauce au vert​). These were fun and nice and crispy. Don't see artichokes like these very often. The sauce was a little weak, though. Didn't exactly go well with these fried little morsels. 'Nduja Croquetas (bomba rice, spicy prosciutto, fontina, grenada pepper aioli). Wow, now these little flavor bombs cannot be missed. Spicy sausage arancinis with a nice peppery aioli to dip. An intensely flavorful little dish that I loved. Can't find it on the menu, maybe it was seasonal, maybe it was a special, but we had a bone marrow French onion soup that was nice. The soup was good good. Very well developed flavors. The marrow bone was a little sloppy, though, and we got a transverse cut of bone, leaving very little marrow to access. Next were the Mussels (green garlic broth, Spanish vermouth, pickled peppers, spring onions, grilled LF bread). Very well cooked mussels, sitting in a lovely broth to dip your bread in. Ask for extra bread. But do not ask for extra of that sauce. That was really bad sauce. Sauce work seems to be this place's only weak point. Probably the biggest dish of the night, the Bolognese Bianco (Newman Farms pork & mushroom bolognese, bucatini, gremolata, parmigiano reggiano). This was a really nice pasta dish! Love those big, thicc bucatini noodles. Flavorful bolognese, great texture from the gremolata, and just cheesy enough to make this probably the most complete dish of the night. Then finally the Sea Scallops (ramp soubise, morel mushrooms, house-cured pancetta). Scallops were scored and cooked to look like fine art. Light scallops paired with nice umami from the morels and the pancetta, all tied together by that nice soubise. You don't see that very often either. We ended the meal with a Sticky Toffee Pudding (apple & date cake, apple brandy toffee, crème chantilly, marcona almond tuile). Chef's kiss. Such a delicate sponge with a nice date flavor. Then boom, the sweet boozy toffee, the creamy chantilly, the texture from the tuile. Every element helped make this a great dessert to end a great meal. Overall, another very pleasant surprise. This was a very good dinner, and I'll definitely come back if I'm ever in St. Louis again.

I have to be honest with you. I didn't know anything about St. Louis before I visited here for a…read morefew days. I certainly wasn't expecting the food scene to be so excellent. I had my first dinner of my stay at Olive + Oak, and it blew me away from the moment I laid my eyes on it. From the unsuspecting street outside, the giant windows glow with the warm, sparkling light from within. An elegant dining room with a beautiful bar and a good amount of hustle and bustle. I felt like I was at an upscale New Orleans joint. Very cozy. Service was just as beautiful. Our server was extremely nice, new the menu backwards and forwards, and rattled off the nightly specials without hesitation. And on top of all of that, when we were getting some stuff to-go, she threw in more bread for us! You can't train that level of service. That's just a good person. Onto the food. We started off with the Blue Crab Gratin (calabrian chili, celery + pretzel bread). This was ooey, gooey, cheesy, delicious, had a fair amount of crab in it, had a nice little kick, and the sliced, crunchy pretzel bread dippers were exquisite. Something seasonal that isn't on their menu anymore, we ordered an Okonomiyaki, which is a savory Japanese pancake, basically, covered in sauce. Wow, this thing was done well. Very reminiscent of the authentic thing I've had in Japan. Very nice. Another dish that isn't on the menu anymore, the Catfish dish. It was slightly Asian and on top of some sort of risotto rice. I can't remember exactly, but I do remember that it was very well cooked, had a nice char. An eclectic dish that came together very nicely. I also got to try some of the Rabbit Crepe (port wine braised rabbit, blueberry, fennel, arugula + kenny's bleu gouda crepe). Some people might shudder at the idea of eating rabbit. Those people need to grow up. Rabbit is one of the most succulent, delicious meats out there, and in this wonderful flavor combination, in a crepe. This chef is genius. I could have downed two of these things. We finished off the night with the recommended Cloud Cake (vanilla chiffon cake, coconut pastry cream, coconut + whipped cream icing). This thing was de-ca-dent. A nice, thicc sponge, a very coconuty cream, and a whipped icing with lots of coconut pulp in it. So heavenly. Overall, my socks were blown off. Not only does St. Louis have good food, this was a better meal than I had in Nashville and Kansas City. Who would have guessed. I would love to come back.

Mains were oversalted and the crust on the burger tasted more burnt than anything. Brussel side was meh. Asparagus was ok. Rabbit main was oversalted and I bit into a bone fragment. Now I know why reservations are booked so far out, they can't turn over tables in a reasonable time because the service is so slow.

I was taught by brother that you should book your first dinner reservation as after flying all day, one is tired, and not able to make good decisions...hence eating at a TGI Fridays in New Orleans on our first night. I have heard about that since. Charlie's had the perfect vibe going as it has a great reputation. Wendy was also simply amazing and shared may stories of St Louis and was just a tremendous server. The only thing that tricked us was the Toasted Ravioli. It has meat in it, and my wife is vegetarian. The Arancini was terrific and the table bread was also quite tasty. My wife had the Manicotti and I had the Chicken Lemonata. So great. The bottle of the house Gitto's Red was the perfect wine as well. A great experience at a restaurant that is a legend in St. Louis and I am glad it was our first meal in the city.

The vibe inside was warm, cozy, and sophisticated. There is also a small patio area that seemed to have a much different vibe. We were seated in a busy area of the restaurant, so there was frequent traffic passing by our table, which took away from the vibe a bit. It didn't bother us but I can see how it could bother others. Everyone we interacted with from the hostess to our waiter Brian and the other servers passing by our table, was friendly and welcoming. The manager even stopped to chat with us while we waited for our Uber. Now for the food, we started with the toasted ravioli we had heard so much about and it was good. For the main dish, we went with the lobster spaghetti which was one of the day's specials. The portion size was generous making it the perfect dish to share with my son. The dish was filled with lobster, shrimp, and other seafood, all tossed in a rich buttery sauce. We both really enjoyed it. Even though we were full from dinner, we didn't want to leave without trying dessert so we took a slice of carrot cake back to the hotel. It made a great late night snack. The cake was moist and the cream cheese icing was delicious. Overall, this is a nice spot for an Italian dinner.
