The people running Basso are fantastic. I went with a group of friends last Saturday evening assuming we would be able to get a table without a reservation. Unfortunately, it was a very busy night and they were booked through 10 p.m. We bought a round of drinks, and as we awkwardly contemplated a new location, a bartender overheard our disappointment/confusion. He was not only apologetic about the situation, but also alerted a manager. Before we'd finished our drinks, a gentleman named Dave kindly greeted our group and offered to set up table service in a cozy lounge area not normally used for dining. We accepted, and throughout our evening Dave and another manager, Alex, came by to make sure we were comfortable and enjoying things. They even gave us complimentary appetizers. We all felt like our visit was even better than if we'd reserved a standard table/booth. The food and drinks at Basso are great, but the service is truly remarkable ... I have been going to Basso for quite some time and unfortunately like many restaurants over time they have gotten lazy, sloppy in the quality of their ingredients, presentation, etc. The salad lacked in color and the components it was supposed to have, there were five Brussels sproutts served on a a saucer. I visited at 5PM on a Saturday (right after a show at the Fox). Six adults, seated in front of the wine room. We went family-style, which was NOT small plates, just shared dishes. It was all incredibly good, especially the creamy polenta. I was impressed by the friendly service and the unique ambiance and location. Potato Gnocchi: Yummy! Not chewy like the frozen stuff, but soft, made fresh (we were told). Creamy Polenta: To die for! Brussel Sprouts: I ate 2/3 of the dish. Not bitter at all. Margherita Pizza: Yummy gourmet-style pizza. Cacio e Pepe: Creamy, lovely linguine Crispy Chicken Milanese: The chicken was delightful. This cabbage salad was bitter - the only thing I didn't like in the whole dinner Lamb Meatballs We had other dishes, but I'm not a big meat eater, and I think they were meat dishes. The TVs were a bit strange for the ambiance, but I liked the experiment. I can see that it might get loud when crowded. This place is worth a try. read more

The atmosphere was great, and the food was delicious, although slightly overpriced for the small portions. The waitstaff was friendly and informative. Despite it being a busy Saturday night, there were several open booths when we arrived for our reservation. We were placed at a tiny table in the walkway between the bar and wall of booths. We asked three different employees (hostess and two waitstaff) if we could move to one of three empty booths nearby as the bar was fairly crowded. Each gave us a different answer, all saying in one way or another that we could not have those booths. Assuming that there were other larger parties coming in (there were only two of us), we shrugged it off. However, after seeing two of the three booths be filled with couples who came into the restaurant after us, we became frustrated. We even overheard a waiter tell one couple to sit in the booth and "just pretend someone told them to sit there." We were appalled! It is one thing to not have available tables, but for multiple employees to outright lie is completely unacceptable. The delicious food and drinks will not be enough to bring me back to Basso ever again. read more

The one star may be a slight misnomer, but really it was one of the staff that soured my whole experience and why I won't go back. Here's my experience, went there with friends for dinner, the food was good, the calamari is definitely worth getting, the pizza was good, not knock me down wow this is great, but not bad, Good Pie is much better. The service from our waitress was good seeing they just opened and were beyond packed. If the night ended there, I would be somewhat of a fan and come back, but it didn't. We moved to the bar, the service at the bar was painful and that's being nice. long waits for drinks, My first round I get a beer, I should have stayed with that. Everyone was talking about these signature cocktails on the menus, so I decide to order one. When I finally got a bartender's attention and ordered one of the featured, signature drinks, I was told "Can you order something simpler to make?" I was caught off guard and said "Excuse me?" The bartender repeated "Can you pick something simpler to make? We have a lot of people waiting for drinks" My response was "I've been patiently waiting for my drink , but no, never mind, I'm done" and started to walk away. The bartender started to walk up the bar saying "No, no, I'll make you something!" I just said "Don't worry about it and walked away." I understand they are a new bar, new staff but for the love of all things bar associated, if you have signature cocktails, make sure they are simple enough to make when you are slammed! That's the first cardinal rule of owning a bar and training your staff! It wasn't like I ordered some exotic drink I made up and was demanding, the staff in theory has been trained on how to make them and it shouldn't be a problem, otherwise why promote them? Also, I've been at bars when they've been slammed and been told, it will be a bit before I can get you your mixed drink, in which case I switch and order a beer. I've never been told "Pick something simpler to make." Instead of giving them my money, I took it with me and will spend it elsewhere, their loss is my gain. Hopefully they can improve their service otherwise they are going to have a rocky road ahead of them. read more

Really steaming after dinner tonight. They called us and confirmed our 6:30 reservation but tactlessly informed us that we needed to be done with dinner by 8:30 for the next set of diners. We have eaten at many restaurants and have never had someone mention that to us. The waitress at 7:00 again informed us again we needed to be finished at 8:30. We were celebrating a 60th birthday and found this rude and nerve racking that we had to be on time to be done with dinner. I am a doctor and don't tell my patients beforehand that I have 30 mins with you and you need to tell me all your concerns and needs within 30 mins. How rude and downright unprofessional!!!!! We were done at 8:30 with no parties waiting! The food was tasteless and they only had one salad on the menu. I will never go back here again. read more

Well, I saw that this place had opened for dinner and was very excited about the menu, the decor. Made reservations for myself and a friend. Valet the car, get inside to the hosts stand, told them we had reservations, and were getting seated at a table. The hostess, takes us to a high-top table, which I'm not a fan of really, but was really wobbly, which it's a new restaurant so I was a bit confused. We asked, is it possible to have a booth or lower table, which there were at least six. She proceeded to get an attitude and said, "Well, those are only for reservations." I told her we did have reservations. Oh, well I mean for parties bigger than just two. Needless to say, it rubbed us the wrong way. We left, went upstairs to The Restaurant at the Cheshire. Definitely GO THERE!! Much nicer decor, took us without reservation right away, no attitude, and the food was awesome!! Sorry, Basso, employee revues need to happen already. read more

My girlfriends and I went here one night out of the blue. We could not stop raving about the delicious pasta. The textures are amazing and the flavors are mouthwatering. My friend could not stop reaching over and taking my pasta right out of the bowl. We are currently still talking about it. We had to ban the topic from our conversation because we could not stop! we are already having trouble deciding what we will get in the future because it is all so tasty. Very friendly staff and seriously delicious food. The vibe of the restaurant is impressive. You walk down the stairs into a cozy, classy, casual room filled with amazing aromas. A fun open kitchen with a brick pizza oven allows you to watch the chefs in action. A large bar with TVs is perfect for the single diner (such as myself), but lots of room for couples and groups as well. The FOOD IS OUTSTANDING. I can't even begin to recommend one item over another - just go with an open mind and an empty stomach. I will say that the finishing touches (such as the fancy crunchy salt bits in the caprese salad) are what put this place over the top. read more

Had been twice to Basso, enjoyed the food very much. Since we live across the street, husband and I decided to take the kids over for dinner. We arrived super early, so our 17, 16 , 12 and 10 year old wouldn't put a buzzkill on the bar scene, ( right before 5pm). No one else was in the room, but the server told us the tables were all booked up. Told us the only place for us was at the bar where they make the salads. Fine. I figured it would be interesting. Of course it was impossible to talk with a line of stools, and we definitely could feel the chilly attitude, but whatever. When we left right after 6, the tables were still completely empty. I was there this past weekend for a bachelorette party and needless to say, I was glad I had the company of my own friends because the staff and manager were less than accommodating, especially considering we had a reservation made weeks ago and then it was somehow "lost" a week before the event. Food is good/average but portions are slim for the price. I don't mind spending money on good food but this was disappointing. Not to mention I am pregnant and was not able to enjoy any cocktails, it took me 30 minutes to get a water. Wife and I dined at Basso for the first time last night. We made reservations for two to insure seating. We then phoned back and clarified the request. We arrived at 6:25 and was promptly greeted by the hostess. She took us to our "table" which was a high top bar table. We noticed all the booths and some availability for those types of seating. I asked for the booth and was told they were reserved for parties of four. Odd that the majority had two people in them. We were told we could wit in a lounge area to see if anything opens but there was no guarantee as to when we might be seated. We decided to leave and she didn't seem to concerned with our decision. The manager got wind of what was happening, stepped in, and got us a booth. He certainly was interested in keeping us in his restaurant! We sat and was greeted by our waited, Greg. We ordered the usual Vodka/tonic. Drinks came and my drink did not contain tonic. I informed Greg and he took care of this immediately with a fresh cocktail. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer along with the margarita pizza and muflada pasta dish. All dishes were served hot and very tasty. We found the muflada pasta to be a little slim on the meat sauce. Greg once again took care of the situation and got us additional sauce, We also ordered the zepoli for dessert! Again, everything was very tasty! I found this place to be very customer oriented aside from the hostess. It is evident this young lady needs additional training as she certainly does not know how to speak with or handle customers. The food is on the expensive side for the portions delivered, but again, the food was very good! Our food bill alone was $50.00. The place was pretty loud and full by the time we left but we never saw anyone waiting for a table. There were some empty seats at the bars as well. We are glad we tried the place and thank Blasé for getting us a proper table. Greg was fantastic and we too thank him. We will probably try this place again but we have certainly learned our lesson about being specific with a reservation request on the seating. I would have given them five stars but the hostess situation reduced the grading. read more

First I pulled up to the Valet stop sign didn't see any one there, so I hopped out of my vehicle and then was asked to moved it about 30 feet forward by a valet that came out of nowhere. I thought the point of valet was so that I can pull up and walk away from it while they parked it?? I also thought that the point of valet was that I could pull up to the door and walk in...not here, here the valet is all the way at the end of the building when the door is in the middle of the building. I had an 8pm reservation and arrived on time but wasn't seated till after 8:15, annoying but I could deal. Our waitress, brought us 2 different glasses of red wine and got them mixed up when handing them to us. we figured it out after the first sip. the Food was OK for the cost but I thought their menu could use a few more steak options. our service left a lot to be desired. won't be going back and won't be recommending them either. read more

This is next to my hotel, but is expensive for what you get. I ordered pasta with heirloom tomatoes. I paid $5 extra for shrimp, which meant I got five small shrimp in my small bowl of pasta. It was nothing but the bowl of pasta - no bread or anything, and with the shrimp totaled $20. If I had had a car, I would have gone someplace else. read more

Had to checkout the 'award winning' happy hour and though there are some decent offerings, nothing mind blowing or worthy of any awards IMO. We did get a pretty good mushroom pizza (~10" for $7) but didn't really see more than maybe 4 mushrooms. The fries were actually pretty darn good though. The con's are: 1) I just can't get over this place being in a dark/dingy basement including having a weird smell like musty and old smoke 2) happy hour's should include some good drink specials and though there are some it's really only super select craft beers and/or $10+ cocktails 3) I still don't like being in a basement! ... So until there is an imminent threat of a tornado, I'll stick with the upper Cheshire part for eats considering they have a good sized bar area anyhow. On the plus side, Basso has a huge bar too, a pretty neat fireplace/seating area (by the bathroom though which is next to the open kitchen which also kinda rubs me the wrong way) and lots of TV's if that's your thing. And don't worry, it's plenty dark to see the TV's well lit up! This place is actually deep underground, I think they were originally planning to build NORAD here. To call it an award winning happy hour is a stretch though unless they won the 'meh' award. I'd get over the dungeon feel if they beefed up their happy hour drinks and if it were me, I'd change the layout a bit. Make sure you don't mind a few steps btw. read more

We have always really enjoyed our experiences at basso! We brought a group of friends that were in town excited to share the vegan pizza with our friends. My girlfriend is vegan and loved that basso had vegan pizza. Well no vegan pizza anymore! Being we are both in the industry we kind of understand if it was not selling you have to ditch it although with vegan gaining popularity in saint louis you have to add options. We decided to stay and make it work like we do at most places, once we ordered and had a nice meal we were once again caught off guard that they charged us extra for veggies in the pasta. So let me get this straight you have no vegan options then you charge me for veggies after we remove almost everything else that is not vegan. I personally love basso and the food, but being my girlfriend is vegan and they have no options I will not get the chance to enjoy it. Have to keep her happy and her belly full! Thanks! read more

We went here for my 26th birthday. I wanted a place that was unique and trendy because my family was driving quite a ways so I wanted to make it worth it. The online reviews and the fact that it was "underground" made it sound really cool. When we pulled up I was a little disappointed. It's underneath the Cheshire which isn't really a good looking place and there was no where to park! Once we actually got inside it was very nice though. Dark lighting, trendy furnishings, different mix of people. The menu was lackluster. It was small and we had to ask the waitress what most of the items were. My sister tried the duck ravioli and it was very good. My boyfriend and mother tried the burger and it was DELICIOUS. I had some sort of pasta with orange in it and it was so-so. Would I come here again? Yes. It was a nice cute place to take pictures in because it was so trendy inside but I wouldn't go here strictly for the food. The menu looks good but most of what we ordered was mediocre at best. We did not order pizza and maybe that would have been the way to go. I ordered the mussels which turned out to be quite bland. The broth was nearly flavorless- the opposite of how mussels usually are done where the mussels themselves are simply an excuse to get a delicious broth. The accompanying bread dissolved when I tried to use it to soak up some broth. Ambiance-wise the room is very loud. Everywhere you look there are TVs. Not our kind of place at all so definitely will not return. read more

My girlfriends and I decided to get drinks at Basso last night. We waited for 20mins at the bar and the bartenders didn't even acknowledge that we were there. I used to bartend and that is unacceptable. Instead of keep looking down at the floor, LOOK UP!!! Your customers aren't down there! Lol these nice gentleman had to scream across the bar to get their attention for us. After 30 mins of waiting, we got a table, which is fine because they were busy. The hostess sat us down and said she will come back with menus. As soon as we sat down, our server Laura S. came up and said "hey, you guys can't sit here with out a hostess sitting you". We proceeded to say a hostess just sat us. She responded with an attitude and has this non believing look on her face saying "it doesn't look like it because you don't have a menu". Needless to say, we waited for another 30mins to order, another 30 to get our drinks, and she never checked back with us to see how our drinks were nor did she have a smile on her face when she talked to us. And the best part was when she snatched our checks off the table while we were still signing and talking. That's just rude! read more

The whole-wheat linguini with shrimp and pine nuts was pretty good but the portion size was small for the price. Was not satisfying. I rated 4 stars because the restaurant is beautiful with an awesome atmosphere. Loud music but not too loud so you can still hear your friends. The Peter Rabbit and Critically Endangered cocktails were good, although not sweet enough for my taste. Long Island iced teas were delicious but not consistently tasting the same which was actually more interesting. And the tiramisu for dessert was to die for! He was no help and had a rotten attitude! He said "well the 30 min. is only an estimate" - o.k., I get that but 2 hours, come on!! We ended up eating appetizers on our laps on the sofa!! Excellent service - held a going away party for some friends recently there. They have a very reasonable policy that allows you to bring one bottle of your own wine with no corking fee - definitely going to encourage us to make this a more regular restaurant despite not being located in our neighborhood. Food was great - good for couples, but also great for sharing - in particular the pizzas, the selection of which changes regularly. Looking forward to our next visit. read more
