Scarlet's Wine Bar -- Wuthering Heights, But With Cocktails…read more Had Emily Brontë given Catherine and Heathcliff access to Scarlet's Wine Bar, Wuthering Heights might have been a significantly happier book. Forget wandering the moors crying out for your tortured lover. Get yourself to the patio, order a cocktail, and pull yourself together. Scarlet's is a hidden gem with just the right amount of romance and charm. It's perfect for a light lunch, a romantic dinner, or an afternoon spent dramatically staring into the distance while wondering why Heathcliff hasn't texted back. Start with the cocktails, which arrive mixed to perfection in beautiful, classic glassware. These are not drinks served in some unfortunate tumbler. These are the sort of glasses Catherine Earnshaw would have dramatically clutched while declaring, "I am Heathcliff!" before ordering another round. Then comes the food. The watermelon salad is out of this world--fresh, bright, and absolutely delicious. Frankly, there would have been considerably less misery at Thrushcross Grange had someone simply served everyone a proper salad. Follow it with the pear and prosciutto pizza. Sweet pear, salty prosciutto, crispy crust--layers of flavor almost as complicated as Catherine and Heathcliff's relationship, but with a much more satisfying ending. And then... The blueberry cheesecake. Light. Fluffy. Dreamy. As soft as the clouds drifting lazily above Scarlet's patio--and considerably less ominous than the clouds hanging over the Yorkshire moors. The staff is fantastic: warm, friendly, attentive, and thankfully no one appears to be harboring a decades-long revenge plot against another family. But the real star may be the patio. Sit outside. Order another cocktail. Let lunch stretch shamelessly into the afternoon. Watch the clouds roll by. Discuss lost loves. Curse the cruel hand of fate. Or just order another piece of cheesecake. Scarlet's Wine Bar is romantic, charming, delicious, and wonderfully relaxed. So forget Wuthering Heights. For one glorious afternoon, make it Wuthering Delights. Heathcliff! Heathcliff! ...I'll be on the patio.

Then I remembered that I had visited it during a festival (print bazaar, perhaps, or Cherokee Caravan?). It somewhat reminded me of a lovely bar in Rome (Astemio), though it is also quite different. Plenty of wine variety here, and staff know the list pretty well. I had orange wine for at least one of my drinks. Can't remember what the 2nd drink was... maybe it was the other orange wine? During a past visit, we had the opportunity to explore the upstairs area and spend some time chatting with the bartender. We also enjoyed the outdoor seating and came away thinking it offered a unique and inviting space. The wine selections deserve special recognition. Whether you're a wine enthusiast or just looking for the right glass to complement the occasion, Sasha's offers plenty of great options. We'd also be remiss if we didn't mention their sister property, Sasha's on Shaw, another excellent destination for wine lovers.

Versatile, knows…read morehow to treat yo' self, equally at home in yoga pants, ready for a backwoods adventure or dressed to the nines, and doesn't blink at any version of you that walks through the door. That's the vibe. We started on the front patio on a Friday night and quickly realized we'd made a mistake. The doors to the interior were open and the music -- a rock-forward playlist that night -- was loud enough that we considered bailing. Our server, was unbothered when we asked to move up to the rooftop. Where we met with a new bartender and server, London, who rolled with it, got us resettled, and from that point on the night was great. London was clearly handling the bar and most of the rooftop tables, but she was attentive throughout, and made eye contact, which seems a near miracle from many 20-something these days. Bumping the score up just for the flexibility on the table move alone. The food: crab cakes were genuinely good, not life-changing, but well above the weak-crab-cake bar that exists in most of the world, served simply with capers and a small salad. I went off-script and ordered the wagyu burger medium rare with fontina (London mentioned cheddar is the more common pick, but the Fontina offerd a great alternative). The burger was deeply flavorful and cooked exactly right, but here's my one real note for the kitchen: toast the brioche bun. Wagyu medium-rare puts out a lot of juice, and an untoasted bun loses its structural integrity about three bites in. A quick toast would let the bun keep some additional integrate and keep up with the perfectly cooked beef. The pom buff were great, the best elevated patato tots you may come by. Beyond what we ordered, the Greek salad is a longtime go-to -- chopped, with grape leaves and pita, available in a small or large, and easily dressed up into a light meal with or without adding some protein or can be share as a self-dress bruschetta appetizer for the group if you ask for extra bread. The cheese boards are also a reliable pick. The wine list is extensive (it's a wine bar, after all), but they don't sniff at cocktails -- I had a solid fine old fashioned, and my wife shared had a Malbec that paired well with everything. Lots of gluten-free options across the menu, too. What Sasha's gets right is that it has refused to become precious. "Wine bar" reads as pretentious to some people, but this place runs as a neighborhood spot. You'll see college kids dressed way down, couples on dates dressed way up, Hawaiian shirts, oversized sweaters, the full range. It's the kind of place where you can split a bottle with your girlfriends, meet a date for drinks and a quick bite without committing to a full dinner, or roll in for brunch on the weekend. Different times of day, different vibes -- always approachable. 4.7 stars. Loses a few tenths for the front-patio music situation and the weak burger bun, but more than makes up for it on flexibility, food, and overall hang factor.

The dining room only seats maybe 18-20 people. Despite the small size, it still felt cozy and welcoming. We had just eaten dinner a few hours ago, so we were just looking for small plates. After picking our server's brain on a few options, we decided on the Beef Tartare & the Charred Octopus. The chips & tartare were solid, but not the best I've ever had. The charred octopus, though, was a huge surprise. I went into this not having eaten octopus is YEARS, so I wasn't sure that I would even like it. But the tasteful sauce, the crunchy yet soft potato, & the chili just went so incredibly well together. We were both very surprised with how good it was. As for the wine, the selection is quite small but still very good. I wasn't sure what wine to order and our server was super helpful in making a choice that I was not disappointed with. If you don't drink wine or aren't open to drier wines, you may not find one you like. We didn't try any of the cocktails, but I heard a few people talking about how good they were. All that being said, Aperi really feels like one of those special little places with amazing food, incredible service, and a cozy, unique vibe. I would definitely recommend anyone who is on the fence to give Aperi a shot, you won't be disappointed!

We arrived right on time for our reservation, stood for quite a few minutes in a half-empty house before being seated, then waited a very long time between visits from our apparently over-stretched waitstaff. The first cocktail I chose wasn't available; nor was the first entree. I settled on the "red wine flight", and it arrived in three glasses. The server recited their names, but I didn't catch them. Food was middle of the road. A smoked sirloin sandwich was tasty, though rather well-done. And the order of "salmon cakes", which the menu says is made of "smoked salmon, roast corn, tomato, cucumber, creme fraiche, and capers" was in fact just one cake (not cakes!), smaller than a hockey puck (about 1/2" thick max) and seemed to be made of canned fish, not the bright orange of smoked salmon. It was accompanied by five thin slices of cucumber and three or four halved grape tomatoes. No corn, no capers. It was so boring, and an overpriced disappointment at $23. If this Bridge is actually closing and focusing on the event space, they've gone out with a whimper. And if they're actually continuing service, I hope they get the food a little closer to the menu descriptions. Our drinks and water glasses were empty for long stretches. Of course it didn't help that the kitchen was closed, so we had no food to go with it.
