Inexpensive Thai food. Coming from California I have been spoilt on good east asian food, so I was not impressed by their food. It tasted bland, and that after I had specifically asked them to make it extra spicy. Thai places on the west coast will usually increase the spice if the customer says they can handle the spice. I can understand catering to the American palette but you need to learn to cater to your customer's preference. I'll try some other stuff and will probably point out the lack of spice the next time around, but until then can't really suggest this place. read more

Basil is very very excellent. It definitely has a much cleaner vibe than Ivy Noodle and unlike the downright angry staff there, the owners and waiters at Basil look genuinely happy to see you. Big fan of the curries and dumplings. Just a word to the jerk who went after Yalies, let me tell you that Yale students are like college students anywhere: we appreciate good food at low prices. I don't know how this got classified as Thai. There are a few Thai dishes, but the vast majority of the dishes are Chinese. The Thai dishes are American-Chinese-style, which means the same gross "stir fry" vegetables every take-out Chinese place has, soggy fried tofu, and tons of sugar and corn starch. Gross. The people here are very nice though. Yes, the prices are very cheap, but cheap food doesn't have to be bad food. Maybe I'm just spoiled though because I live in Queens, NY can can get absolutely fantastic authentic curry for nothing at several places in a mile radius. read more

Basil is great for what it is. This place serves cheap, tasty pan-Asian food. It's great for takeout, the staff is friendly, and the bill is always looooow. Terrible. I'd put zero stars if possible. Ordered Pad Thai via Uber Eats. There was no pad Thai sauce on the Pad Thai just raw noodles, some scrambled egg, and two pieces of pan fried broccoli. I called the restaurant to complain and they told me it's how they make their Pad Thai ... Okay, but that really needs to be communicated via menu. They told me they "couldn't" refund me and I needed to call Uber Eats for a refund. They also told me they would approve a refund when Uber Eats contacted them. Called Uber Eats and (of course) they told me to call the restaurant for a refund. When I finally got Uber Eats to investigate my claim they called Basil and Basil wouldn't approve my claim. Uber Eats went on to tell me I got the correct meal ... because apparently, they know. Anyways, Basil is terrible and Uber Eats is terrible. Would never order from either business again. Plus, had the Pad Thai had sauce it still would've been weak af - barely any vegetables at all. If you want good Thai food in New Haven go to Rice Pot, waaaaay better and amazing customer service. Surprisingly good. Curry dishes very full bodied without being overly spicy. Of all the many choices for asian of in New Haven, given the overall balance of quality of food/taste, service and very reasonable prices this might be one of the best in all of New Haven. I travel to the Boston area several times a year. Got caught in winter storm Falco and had to get off the road and wound up in New Haven for the night. Went to Basil at the suggestion of the hotel staff... Nothing fancy, but probably the best Chow Fun and steamed dumplings I've had outside of Chinatown San Francisco. Very reasonably priced as well! Looks like they have an extensive noodle menu too. I will have to take a "detour" on my next trip to try some of their noodle dishes! read more

This is a hidden gem in New Haven. After finding this restaurant, I no longer go to Ivy Noodles or the other nearby Asian restaurants. The best thing of this restaurant is that they don't seem to use MSG. At least I never feel thirsty after dinning there. And with the very reasonable price, I can afford to dine there almost everyday. The chef is the owner, and so the food quality can be maintained very well. The scallion pancakes, fried noodle (Singapore noodle, mee siam, pad thai etc), rice-on-top and specialty dishes are all authentic and delicious. The selection was good and decor comfortable and cozy. After eating there at least once a week for more than 8 months, I still have a crave for the food there. I will keep going back until the day I have to leave New Haven. read more

In my opinion, the best Chinese food near Yale Campus. (Although their Pho is substandard, as all of New Haven, sadly) At the time of this review, the place is fairly new after reopening (East Melange closed down.) As such, it's clean, but a little bare on interior decorations. But who cares about that? It's about the food and service. The service is pretty good. The food is pretty good too, considering it's (Non-Thai) Asian Food in New Haven. As Thai goes, I'd prefer elsewhere, but the Chinese here is nice. They have the base "sauce" that is lacking elsewhere. My one complaint is that the portions here are too small for a cheap Chinese splurge. read more

Not a terrific place to find Singaporean malaysian cuisine but definitely more decent than Bentara. It's a shabby quick eat sort of place, servings a range of asian food from south east asia. It's a place where I go to get a quick fix meal for thai, Singapore, malaysian food. But maybe because nothing tastes close to my home food it's not really for me. We went here on a Sunday night for dinner. We came here with my family of four and my parents, who are elderly and a little disabled. There is no handicap access. We arrived around 5:00 pm and found plenty of seating. For appetizers we ordered Roti Canai, Roast Pork Bun and Vegetable Spring Roll. All were delicious, but the Roast Pork Bun was exceptionally tasty. First time we ever had that. For our main meals, we ordered Seafood Udon, Chicken Lo Mein, Vegetable Rice Noodle and another chicken dish (which I can't remember the name). We asked the dishes to be slightly spicy, which the did. It all came out delicious! The only problem that we had (actually only my parents had this complaint) was that around 6:00 pm, a lot of patrons came in (probably college students since it's so close to Yale U.) The restaurant got very loud and the noise reverberated all around. I suggest that the restaurant put up some sound dampening material to absorb the loud sounds. Other than the volume, the restaurant was very clean, service was courteous and quick and the price was reasonable. read more

I was really sad when East Melange closed. The new restaurant in its place is Basil Restaurant. I tried it today with a friend. We ordered Tom Yom (sp?) noodles. Nothing really special. We also shared some Shanghai dumplings. Not very good. I've been to York St Noodle and I like their food better. The only really positive comments I can make about Basil Restaurant are that the food is really cheap and the decor is nice. Caveat: I am Asian-American, and non-Asians may have different opinions. read more

Ahhhh, is it sad that I absolutely love this place? It should be just another Asian Food restaurant but they do some things remarkably good here. First of all, they have *amazing* udon. Their drunken noodles and tom yum noodle soups are also very good. In the wintertime, you can even ask for hot tea for free. I usually order my Tom yum seafood noodle soup with rice noodles and it's the bomb dot com! They also have some great rice dishes if you are not into soups. This is my absolute favorite place. I have nothing but praises for this place. I'm originally from Malaysia and even though this place is not advertised as a Malaysian restaurant, you can find lots of really good Malaysian food here. It feels like home eating here. I have yet to find any other place like this any where else. My favorites are the tom yum soup noodles, pepper and salt pork chop which my boyfriend loves, chow kueh tiao (fried flat noodles) and the fried glass noodles. They have this special chilli with shrimp paste (belacan) for those who like spicy food. You cant go wrong with this place. And most importantly, the food here are super reasonably priced! Where else can you find amazingly delicious food at a cheap price. Love love love this place. read more

Came here with a group of friends, ordered family style (so lots of entrees with individual bowls of rice). Food: the yellow curry was great, very flavorful and nicely made. Duck was well prepared. Basil is always a safe place to go for a fairly satisfying Chinese meal. I usually order the Chinese dishes and have been pretty satisfied. I recommend the casserole dishes - hot and delicious! I've only ordered from their Thai selections once - and for good reason. If you're craving Thai food, I'd go to an actual Thai restaurant. Thai restaurants in New Haven actually offer decent bubble tea too - better than Basil's bubble tea. The prices are comparable to other Chinese restaurants in the area, but I wish the dishes were a little bigger. Basil is a good alternative to the nearby Ivy Noodle. Basil's service and casual atmosphere is better and brighter than the dingier Elm St. joint. read more

Wonderful food. The steamed pork manju buns were lovely. The massaman curry had a wonderful flavor. It's was a trifle sweeter than usual. It had pineapple so I'm guessing they used the juice. The sauce was a little thinner than usual as well, however not to the detriment of the overall dish. Bubble tea was par for the course. The rice portion with the meal was a little short of what I needed. Service was marginal but they aren't English and I was reading a book so she might of assumed I wanted to be left alone. This is fantastic restaurant. Its a better version of york street noddle. Its unbelievably cheap, take out chinese costs more. Their thai iced tea is only $1.95. (york st noddle is $1.75). the decor is beautiful, its the reason why i didnt go there at first, it was so nice that i thought that it was going to be an expensive restaurant. The noddle soups are delicious, more flavorly and less broth than york st. It was not greasy at all. I have also tried the mango chicken over rice, which I really liked. Its just a longer walk for me than york st noddle, otherwise I'd go twice weekly. Much better hours, open until 11pm, impt since so many new haven restaurants close super early. they have take out too, which I have not done. read more

I love this place. It is pretty cheap and the food is always good. More importantly all of the servers are unbelievably friendly and helpful. I always pay with my debit card and after a few visits they started greeting me by name. The beef rendang casserole is amazing. I also really love the wonton noodle soup. Chow fun (wide rice) noodles are the best. Finally they always split the check when I go with a group of people. They do it automatically and it makes things much easier. The only negative thing that I can say is that food doesn't seem to come out in any sort of understandable pattern. Sometimes apps come after entrees. Sometimes one person is left waiting while everyone else has food. As long as you are ok with that, this place rocks your face off. read more

I have never had anything at Basil that I didn't like! Their scallion pancakes, in particular, are the best I've ever had (very thick and a bit crunchy--yum!). New Haven is filled with Thai food, and every place I've gone to has been good, including Basil. While the food is mostly the same, Basil sets itself apart by being slightly less expensive. The interior is smaller and less fancy than other places, but I don't really see that as a problem as long as you are not looking for a formal dinner. The waiters are friendly and the food comes out fast. As a college student, that's about all you need from a restaurant. Basil doesn't have as large of a menu as some of the other Thai places in town, but they certainly cover all of their bases. For instance, they offer three types of curry (yellow, red, and Massman) with four choices of protein (vegetable, chicken, beef, shrimp). The price? $6-7. What's nice about Basil is that they also offer Chinese food, which I haven't really noticed at other Thai restaurants. It's also a great place for take out. For food, I'd give Basil 3 stars. It's not the best Thai food in New Haven but it's definitely good. Because of the low prices and friendly service, I added another star. Food is actually pretty dece. Chipotle style place without competitive price or flavor. They upcharge you for brown rice, onions & peppers, sour cream, salsa, and of course guacamole. I paid $12 for a bowl that I get for $9 at Chipotle and wasn't half as satisfied. They got my business cause they're open past 10 but having a Chipotle a half mile away can't be good for their longevity. read more
