Wonderful food. The steamed pork manju buns were lovely. The massaman curry had a wonderful flavor. It's was a trifle sweeter than usual. It had pineapple so I'm guessing they used the juice. The sauce was a little thinner than usual as well, however not to the detriment of the overall dish. Bubble tea was par for the course. The rice portion with the meal was a little short of what I needed. Service was marginal but they aren't English and I was reading a book so she might of assumed I wanted to be left alone. Solid food, I will most certainly eat here again. read more

Everything I got was really mediocre, edible but not enjoyable. Maybe I ordered the wrong stuff? My bubble tea had little flavor and the bubbles were kind of hard instead of squishy. The crispy noodles were ok, but I asked for vegetables on top which ended up being a million mushrooms, a few carrot slices, and like 3 bites of broccoli. I don't like mushrooms, so this really didn't leave me with much. The prices and atmosphere were good but the food was just blah. I don't think I would come here again. read more

I think it's really interesting, avant-garde even, how the appetizer never fails to come after everything else, especially given that they don't seem to be doing this on purpose. At least their boba slushies come out right after you order them, as if to make up for the difference. In any case, I really do like Basil--it's much more consistent than Great Wall in terms of quality, that quality being slightly above average. It's also very cheap for the variety of foodstuffs it offers (though sometimes I go and they don't offer certain veggies, wah) and all their dishes are quite authentic and happily non-Americanized/westernized. read more

I love basils!! Everything is always fresh and delicious. It is also very fast. I highly recommend the general tso chicken.

Went here tonight...the service was great...greeted at door by owner and felt like family....food was great ...especially the seafood...portions were also huge...I was not a big fan when first started going there...but have been won over read more

Came here with a group of friends, ordered family style (so lots of entrees with individual bowls of rice). Food: the yellow curry was great, very flavorful and nicely made. Duck was well prepared. The fish was also pretty nicely done. Overall, food was pretty good however portions are relatively small. Service: was great! read more

This place is great! If you call and have trouble getting through they are probably open. Claudia says they are having issues with their phone. Call 646 750 4389 read more

The Malaysian chicken is amazing !!! The service is quite prompt too. They should just include some desserts in the menu then would be perfect read more

Lots of tasty food for a cheap price plus it's really nice place to walk in with friendly service.

Slightly better than Ivy Noodle. Great Chinese fast food -- just like China.

Consistently tasty food at wonderfully low prices! I've always had great experiences here.

Basil is as good as it gets. The food is inexpensive, the menu is large and diverse and most importantly, the food is fresh and delicious!!! The customer service could be better but it's something I overlook because of the quality of the dishes. read more

I love this place. Their masulman??? curry is the best I've every had. Their steamed biscuits are good to. I have water here twice and when I come to new haven I always want to come back. read more

The massaman curry is simply amazing! Probably the best I have eaten all over the u.s. Has a very rich flavor with tons of vegetable etc. I frequent this place now. Service has also been excellent. The only downside is the ambiance. It is close quarters and can get Loud. Doesn't stop me from eating here though. read more

Udon noodles with roast pork was great! Looking forward to trying more dishes on their menu.

I suppose many of the good reviews are from college kids. There is nothing that really stands out here. Food was okay, not bad but not great either. Their sodas must be stored improperly. While they are not passed the expiration date, they all have some odd taste to them. Anyhow, not much to say. Service is good, but food is average at best, and you're best bringing your own drink. People seem to give any place 4 Stars or more when those should be reserved for places that really stand out. read more

Probably the fastest service I've ever seen at a restaurant. Been here multiple times and never disappoints. Pad Thai, drunken noodles and pork chops, all amazing. 1 extra star for the lady in the hat. read more

LOVE Basil. I just recently moved to New Haven and have already been to Basil two times. The food is great however the service isn't that great. I would of given 5 stars if the service could of been better. When they take your order it is very demanding, and when you need something no one is to be found. But I'll keep coming back because the food is great! read more

This is by far me and my girlfriends favorite restaurant in New Haven. We always try to come at least once a month, if not more. We always get the spring rolls, Vegetable Lo Mein, and Chicken Fried Rice. More than enough food and our absolute favorites. Staff is also very nice and the atmosphere is always great. read more

super good food. less good service. don't be daunted by the size of the menu, everything on it is prepared excellently and well. service was average, we came in on a Sunday and the hostess was playing the part of server as well as sous. but the food, my god, the food- I had the Japanese udon with roast pork. can't recommend it enough. read more

Basil Restaurant - Delicious late dinner. - Asian Fusion Near Me - New Haven, Connecticut

See all

The appetizers were ok , portions were very small. The meal was terrible . I was in the mood for Thai food, and the food was just a soy sauce mix. No taste and had a weird smell. Not happy on the food or service. read more

Summary: A fantastic, well-priced fusion restaurant with excellent Cantonese-style Chinese food and friendly service. Pros: -Authentic, fairly priced, Cantonese Chinese food. -Friendly service. -Takes credit and cash. Cons: -Slightly smaller portion sizes relative to Manhattan Chinatown standards on some of the dishes. Long version: My family ate dinner here, mostly from the Chinese side of the menu, with the exception of a roti canai, Satay chicken, and a Massaman curry, all of which were very good. As for the Chinese food, we ordered the following dishes, all of which were authentic Cantonese-style: wonton noodle soup, roast duck over rice, salt and pepper fried pork chops, the fish fillet with black pepper sauce over rice, and the chicken crispy noodles. We were especially surprised with how well the roast duck turned out: the portion size was admittedly smaller relative to Manhattan standards, but it tasted just as good. Basil also offers a variety of noodle options for their noodle soups: we had the Cantonese noodles and the flat rice noodles, both of which met our expectations very well. Some of the portions were perhaps slightly smaller than what would be served in Manhattan's Chinatown, but it was still enough to fill us up after a long day of walking. The waitress on duty was extremely friendly and helpful, and she also spoke Cantonese very well, despite her humble claims otherwise =) Fusion restaurants sometimes have a bad reputation for not doing anything particularly well, but Basil offers a very solid Cantonese menu. read more

I love Basil and eat here a couple times a week. The staff is very kind. Their food is ready fast. Best of all, they make their Pad Thai without ketchup. read more

Best Asian fusion in New Haven!!! Food is delicious and fresh, prices are so reasonable, and the staff is so sweet. Also amazing vegetarian options--general tsos tofo is the best. read more

We stayed at the courtyard marriott around the corner and didnt feel like walking too far, so we stoped by for a quick dinner. Got great quality for the money we spent. Their menugives you many choices and they seem to make everything on there fresh. We had some noodles that were recommended to us and chicken teriyaki. They also steamed some vegetables for our baby. Everything was very tasty and service was good. Cant eat better for under $ 10. read more

I used to think this was an okay place to eat. The food is okay-- I've had more authentic and cheaper, but it's decent for average, americanized Chinese food. However, tonight when I went with my friend, I found a strand of black hair wrapped around the meat and veggies in my dish. When I pointed it out to the hostess, she became extremely defensive and denied that it could possibly be from any worker in the restaurant, and that it was from me (I have dark brown hair). Then she went on to say that it was too thin to be her own, and that her hair was so thick that she had to gel it, and on and on... She made my friend and me extremely uncomfortable and would not let the topic be. We were yelled at for a good 5 minutes straight before she walked away. Oh yeah, and they took forever to give us our pork buns. In fact, they came after we asked for the check. In summary, average place with average food and slow service, with waitstaff and cooks who do not wear hair nets. And if you point out there's hair in your food, they blame it on you. I think I'll go to Ivy Noodle instead. read more

The curry was amazing, but the pad Thai was terrible. It was overly sweet and lacked flavor, and the beef was way too starchy.

I'm worried that once more people find out about this place, it will be impossible to get in. Here it is- this is the best value in a restaurant in Connecticut. Awesome food, usually great service, and the price is 1/3 to 1/2 of others where the food isn't even as good. Best scallion pancakes around. Curry excellent. Don't forget to feed the meter- New Haven parking is bad. read more

The curry chicken was phenomenal. It's a different take on the classic dish where it's not liquid.

It's a nice place with yummy filling food for a good price. We ordered chicken teriyaki buns, chicken drunken noodles, chicken fried rice & cappuccino boba....we loved the place & will definitely visit again soon. Service was also good . Great place.... read more

An order for Pho ("Vietnamese style beef soup") and a taro bubble tea was placed without hassle via telephone. Parking at Basil being nonexistent, my car was left in a rather seedy area of New Haven, no surprises there, really. A short walk around the corner and up the stairs leads our hero to his destination, greeted by several smiles and hellos. The woman at the counter peered deeply into my soul before I could even open my mouth; she knew exactly why I had come. My bubble tea was taken out of the fridge and handed to me (First one ever, actually. Everyone: You were right. Fantastic.) and my order appeared before my eyes. Credit card accepted, I continued back to my car, confronted only once by a conspicuous fellow with an itchy neck who may or may not have been under the influence of bath salts but definitely did want spare change and did not eat my face. The food was bangin and I cannot wait until I have my next reason (hangover?) to get Pho, or just to hang out with friends and eat quality food served by an enlightened staff in a harmonious location. Thank you for existing, Basil. read more

Excellent. Definitely recommend! Soup Dumplings were amazing. Fresh vegetables, great broth, huge soap bowls, and generous with the meat all for an affordable price. read more

I never ever write bad reviews for restaurants being an restaurant owner in the past, but I need to say something. The staff was not ready for the crowd to come in. Ordered the food at 5:51pm and got the food at 7:43pm. I understand if the food takes long to cook and prepare. The problem was that the food was sitting on the counter. Many people who ordered before took their food. Food was cold and noodles all stuck together. Food is good, but not when you get the wrong order for your takeout. Please please please be prepared and be a little more organized. Average takeout should take 10-15min, maximum 30-40min on a busy day like today. Do not ever let your customer wait for 2 hours for disappointment. Thank you. read more

This is my place if I want some nice comfort food. Dumplings, noodle bowl, etc. My favorite is the Chicken Curry Noodle Soup - delicious!! And the prices are great too! My go-to if I'm under the weather, just not having a good day, or feeling the pinch. read more

Basil is probably THE best Chinese food restaurant at its price range in New Haven. Their beef noodle soup is always generous, with actual chunks of meet as opposed to tiny little slivers at Dee Dee's Kitchen downtown. The place is very clean and neat, with a staff that is incredibly friendly and warm (kind of like the aunties in Joy Luck Club), unlike every other Chinese restaurant in town. Honestly though, you cannot go wrong with any of the item on their menu. My only critique would be that some of their stir-frys are too greasy, but then again so is every other Chinese restaurant in New Haven... read more

good for kids and students and people with not a lot of time....very helpful with our kids....

I like Basil compared its peers (hint, Ivy Noodle). The servers are sweet, attentive, and actually refill your water without asking! I think the food is good considering that Basil isn't trying to be high end and the prices certainly are easy on the wallet. I like that it's a simple, no nonsense kind of place. read more
