My favorite dish is the beef chow fun! I have come to this restaurant several times and i would get that dish every time. I have tried the fried dumplings as well which was great. Next time i am looking to try the soup. read more

I ordered chicken and broccoli, which is pretty much as basic as you can get. The chicken was rubbery, absolutely disgusting, and inedible. I do have friends who eat here so perhaps their other menu items are decent...but stay away from the chicken!!! read more

If you are looking for an inexpensive and tasty place for lunch this is the place. Food is delicious, servers are friendly and knowledgeable, and the prices are great. Also, service was very quick. The steamed dumplings are delicious! read more

Cheap food and the tasteless the chicken broccoli wasn't good I don't think I will come back again The scallions pancake was so bad and hard read more

Just around the corner from the courtyard Marriott makes this place a convenient place for an exotic bite. What a nice surprise it turned out to be. Simple and understated set up with an impressive menu. Dinner for one, so I did not get to sample more than two dishes, but both were good. Had the spicy sesame wontons to start and a bowl of seafood rice noodle soup as my main. Tasty broth and good spice on both. The price was very reasonable as well. read more

It's a nice, Cosy place at the corner of Howe street that's easy to miss. I'm so glad I tried this. Now I'm a regular dining in or ordering via uber eats. The cook makes amazing Malaysian dishes. I'm especially in love with the Malaysian curry chicken and roti kanai. I'd definitely recommend this place for folks who like Asian fusion food read more

Wow, I've only been here twice and I've been extremely disappointed both times. I got pad Thai this time, and there was essentially zero flavor to the noodles. There wasn't even a trace of tamarind paste in the dish, which is the quintessential ingredient in pad Thai. I am shocked by the consistent awfulness of this restaurant and its continued existence. read more

Love this place for the great tasting foods and price to portion ratio. I really like their yellow curry and noodle dishes here. read more

Home cooked Asian food near Yale. Prices are reasonable to boot - mains cost than $10. If I was a student here I'll probably visit this place quite often. I had the Thai chicken red curry which had all sorts of vegetables inside. The curry was creamy and tasty, gave me a little reminder of home. read more

The food was really good and the waitress was very friendly and talkative. There is a lot of variety on the menu and the prices seem to be very reasonable. I had drunken noodles and although not spicy it was very flavorable. My colleague had red curry and pad thai. He thought it was very good. The red curry was spicy. read more

We were very pleasantly surprised by the authentic quality of the menu items. We discovered that the BBQ pork, soy sauce chicken and roast duck are all prepared by Basil's co-owner and chef himself. The variety of dishes is enormous. Prices are very attractive. Portions are generous. Basil is definitely a place to visit regularly fir a wide range of Asian dishes. read more

Great value for money, we enjoyed a meal for 4 with appetisers and mains for only $ 44. a rarity in this world of 15 dollar burgers (NYC take note) would definitely go again read more

My family and I were in New Haven for the day this past Saturday. Thanks to mobile Maps of local food availability we found Basil Restaurant. The waitress was patient, personable and sweet. Our supper arrived surprisingly quickly and was delicious. Prices were very reasonable, and dishes were visually appealing. I give this restaurant additional kudos for having Coke product v.s. Pepsi. Definitely a keeper! read more

I almost didn't go into the restaurant because it looked a bit run down from my car as I drove by. But I got over myself and went in and was very pleasantly surprised. I thought the woman serving was perfectly lovely - not sure why numerous reviewers have thought otherwise. She is personable and incredibly efficient managing everything in the front of the restaurant - take out, phone, and serving. The food was great. I had the roti canai, which is a fried bread with a nicely flavored dipping sauce. Not a good choice for those dieting but delicious. Then I had the vegetable Massaman curry. It had a nice flavor and the vegetables were cooked perfectly - still crisp and fresh with some crunch. I was very impressed especially when you take into account the great price and that it came out quickly. So you could linger with friends or just grab a quick meal. I wouldn't suggest it for date night or a special event - but it is perfect to visit frequently and become a regular. Clearly from the traffic, it is a great take-out option as well. If I lived locally, I would be here all the time. read more

This is my go to place in New Haven and I don't just mean for Asian food... They serve quality food and their prices are the best around. We go to dinner here very often because the service is great and you feel good after eating here. Much better and healthier alternative to your corner Chinese takeout restaurants. Must Try!! read more

Perhaps it's better in person. I ordered an assortment of items for takeout including both Chinese and Thai options. I loved the fact that they do both. I thought the General's chicken was great- some of the best I have had in terms of meat quality and flavor. The hot oil dumplings were decent but I have had better. The Thai items really fell short of expectations. Both the Pad Thai and Drunken Noodle were far less flavorful than I am used to and looked more like imposters compared to what I routinely get from many other local Thai restaurants. read more

I love Basil. The food is always great and the service is spectacular. I usually get the chow fun, and an appetizer of some sort. Their cold noodles are especially delicious. On an interesting note they are strangely inflexible with their menu options. I asked for noodles with a non-noodle special and our server (who is spectacular) looked at me as though I had committed a grave sin! How hard would it have been to replace the rice with noodles? Were there noodle police standing in the kitchen inspecting every order before it came out ? I really hope not! Bottom line: great food, great service, strangely rigid. read more

Perfect gem next to my hotel while in town for work. The spicy noodles were better than my favorite home town Thai place. It was a wonderful welcome while in town for business. The portion is for one and was only $6.95! The food was fresh, served hot and the service was great. I ate solo (which I do often while traveling) and felt comfortable. The place is BYO and I will certainly be back if back in town. read more

This is a great cheap place close to my home. My favorite dish here is the singapore noodles. You get a big portion for a relatively cheap price. Other dishes that I have tried which were good were pad thai, drunken noodle, and the wonton soup. I always do carry out but I am sure the dine in experience is nice. The staff that work there are very friendly and helpful. There is metered street parking outside. Definitely check it out. read more

Basil is a really good, solid area Asian fusion restaurant. I've been going there for years and recently went back for lunch, and nothing has changed. The staff is always friendly and happy to answer questions. One can order Thai, Malaysian, Chinese,, and Vietnamese dishes that are priced well and stay true to form. They have a large selection of bubble teas, a beer/wine license, menu selections, brown rice, and vegetarian offerings. Really, the only things that keep me from giving them a 5 is that often times service can be slow, as they seem understaffed, menu items have a tendency to come out at different times even for small groups, and the climate is always freezing in there. I've eaten with my coat on many times in there during the winter months, which just isn't comfortable. They are always happy to handle large groups and separate checks as well, which is a definite plus. I've never been disappointed in any food item or ha to send it back, even when I was out of my comfort zone. The seaweed salad and scallion pancakes are definitely a plus for appetizers, and the Mei Fun is my favorite entrée. read more

Ok, what you pay is what you get. Cheap food.....Opens late. What else do you want. It is cheaper than going to 7-eleven getting a freaking hot dog and a Big Gulp. If you feel hungry later in the evening, this is the place to go to. If you don't like a heavy meal. Try their pad thai. read more

Just absolutely terrible! Went there for lunch yesterday and got chicken with mixed vegetable over white rice. The chicken tasted like it was dipped in bleach and had a nasty texture and the sauce was gloppy. My friend got a soup and she said her chicken tasted the same way. I wouldn't feed this crap to my dog. Is that even chicken? Yuck, stay away!!!!!!! read more

Ohhh! Super affordable with more than decent sized portions! Being vegetarians, we decided to go with the Chef's special spicy garlic Eggplant and yellow curry. Both were more than satisfying both on wallet and pallet. Be sure to ask for the hot Thai tea while you are there! read more

The food is cheap, but unfortunately, it's not delicious. Flavor? no, there is not much flavor even in the heavy, traditional Chinese dishes. Variety? yes, the restaurant is pan-asian. However, of all the items I have tried so far (a good 15 items on the menu), the scallion pancake is the only memorable item to me. Service? The service is great. The staff is friendly and attentive. However, the restaurant is never full every time I have gone. Basil provides a quick fix for pan-asian craving, but not very special. read more

i was a regular at this place during law school-- probably ate (or ordered from) there at least once a week. it's delicious, simple, and cheap chinese food. i am chinese and it reminds me of my mom's cooking. the servers/owner there are great too. my roommate and i noticed that they bring chinese people warm water (as is the custom) and non-chinese iced water. it was particularly apparent when i went with my non-asian husband. but that just goes to show the level of detail and thought behind their service. a sidenote: they had a super creepy busboy when i was living in new haven. he tended to ogle women and make things super uncomfortable. im not sure if he's still there, but ladies, you've been warned! read more

This place has decent Chinese, not quite NYC or LA standard, but probably the best in New Haven. They have a wide selection of Asian food and service is pretty good too. It's definitely a hidden gem in New Haven. I wish they offer delivery. read more

I fell in love and this became officially the best place to go for me when I'm in the mood for Chinese food. Big portions, some of the best and freshest Asian food I've had. Great service too! The pad Thai was one of the worst I've ever had. Dry and no sauce. Basil is a fantastic casual asian-fusion restaurant. The food is delicious, the menu is diverse, the service is quick and courteous and the prices are great-- which in my book when taken in combination = 5 stars! I come here whenever I want a delicious, low-key, affordable meal (take-put is also an option, but I have always stayed because the service is good and the atmosphere is nice.) The interior is modern and minimalist, but clean and pleasant. I have had the soups and the stirfry so far, but truth be told I want to try pretty much the entire menu. In my opinion a lot of the other asian places in New Haven are either overrated, and not authentic, or over-priced- I don't want to pay $15 for weeknight takeout. Basil is the perfect option! read more

Basil is very very excellent. It definitely has a much cleaner vibe than Ivy Noodle and unlike the downright angry staff there, the owners and waiters at Basil look genuinely happy to see you.
