So we should have gotten great food and excellent service! My date ordered Chicken Pad Thai , What happened here, I can make a tastier dish than this. It was very plain,no sauce at all, not flavorful, barely any chicken and they tossed in chunks of tofu? We ordered CHICKEN....maybe they ran out and thought we wouldn't notice?...sigh... My order was interesting, Chicken with Brown Rice and Yellow Curry. The yellow curry sauce was decent and flavorful, thank goodness, and there was a good amount of chicken and fair amount of rice to add to the bowl.. However, there was TOO much Curry sauce , it was more like a soup and it had a random mix of vegetables and fruits and things floating in it...Let me explain, There was a few mushroom, bell peppers slices,( sounds normal so far right?).... 1 Random NOODLE!,....2 cubed chunks of pineapple??! ONE wedge of a TOMATO?! and Broccoli.. Very strange! It's like they collected things at random in the kitchen and tossed them in my bowl. The service was not very attentive like others have said. Wow, I've only been here twice and I've been extremely disappointed both times. I got pad Thai this time, and there was essentially zero flavor to the noodles. There wasn't even a trace of tamarind paste in the dish, which is the quintessential ingredient in pad Thai. I'm being generous with 2 stars. Don't expect any kind of customer service from the snappy woman owner (I assumed). The restaurant wasn't even busy so I wonder what she's snappy about? The food was tasted ok by Asian standard. We ordered three soup noodles, one BBQ buns, one shumei, and a Singapore meifin. The ingredients were average, nothing high quality but the taste was fine. Just around the corner from the courtyard Marriott makes this place a convenient place for an exotic bite. What a nice surprise it turned out to be. Simple and understated set up with an impressive menu. Dinner for one, so I did not get to sample more than two dishes, but both were good. I almost didn't go into the restaurant because it looked a bit run down from my car as I drove by. But I got over myself and went in and was very pleasantly surprised. I thought the woman serving was perfectly lovely - not sure why numerous reviewers have thought otherwise. She is personable and incredibly efficient managing everything in the front of the restaurant - take out, phone, and serving. The food was great. I had the roti canai, which is a fried bread with a nicely flavored dipping sauce. Not a good choice for those dieting but delicious. Then I had the vegetable Massaman curry. It had a nice flavor and the vegetables were cooked perfectly - still crisp and fresh with some crunch. I was very impressed especially when you take into account the great price and that it came out quickly. So you could linger with friends or just grab a quick meal. I wouldn't suggest it for date night or a special event - but it is perfect to visit frequently and become a regular. Clearly from the traffic, it is a great take-out option as well. I thought the General's chicken was great- some of the best I have had in terms of meat quality and flavor. The hot oil dumplings were decent but I have had better. The Thai items really fell short of expectations. I love Basil. The food is always great and the service is spectacular. I usually get the chow fun, and an appetizer of some sort. Their cold noodles are especially delicious. On an interesting note they are strangely inflexible with their menu options. I asked for noodles with a non-noodle special and our server (who is spectacular) looked at me as though I had committed a grave sin! How hard would it have been to replace the rice with noodles? This is a great cheap place close to my home. My favorite dish here is the singapore noodles. You get a big portion for a relatively cheap price. Other dishes that I have tried which were good were pad thai, drunken noodle, and the wonton soup. I always do carry out but I am sure the dine in experience is nice. The chicken tasted like it was dipped in bleach and had a nasty texture and the sauce was gloppy. My friend got a soup and she said her chicken tasted the same way. Basil is a really good, solid area Asian fusion restaurant. I've been going there for years and recently went back for lunch, and nothing has changed. The staff is always friendly and happy to answer questions. One can order Thai, Malaysian, Chinese,, and Vietnamese dishes that are priced well and stay true to form. They have a large selection of bubble teas, a beer/wine license, menu selections, brown rice, and vegetarian offerings. Really, the only things that keep me from giving them a 5 is that often times service can be slow, as they seem understaffed, menu items have a tendency to come out at different times even for small groups, and the climate is always freezing in there. I've eaten with my coat on many times in there during the winter months, which just isn't comfortable. They are always happy to handle large groups and separate checks as well, which is a definite plus. I've never been disappointed in any food item or ha to send it back, even when I was out of my comfort zone. The seaweed salad and scallion pancakes are definitely a plus for appetizers, and the Mei Fun is my favorite entrée. read more

However, of all the items I have tried so far (a good 15 items on the menu), the scallion pancake is the only memorable item to me. Service? The service is great. The staff is friendly and attentive. i was a regular at this place during law school-- probably ate (or ordered from) there at least once a week. it's delicious, simple, and cheap chinese food. i am chinese and it reminds me of my mom's cooking. the servers/owner there are great too. my roommate and i noticed that they bring chinese people warm water (as is the custom) and non-chinese iced water. it was particularly apparent when i went with my non-asian husband. but that just goes to show the level of detail and thought behind their service. a sidenote: they had a super creepy busboy when i was living in new haven. he tended to ogle women and make things super uncomfortable. im not sure if he's still there, but ladies, you've been warned! read more

Basil is a fantastic casual asian-fusion restaurant. The food is delicious, the menu is diverse, the service is quick and courteous and the prices are great-- which in my book when taken in combination = 5 stars! I come here whenever I want a delicious, low-key, affordable meal (take-put is also an option, but I have always stayed because the service is good and the atmosphere is nice.) The interior is modern and minimalist, but clean and pleasant. I have had the soups and the stirfry so far, but truth be told I want to try pretty much the entire menu. In my opinion a lot of the other asian places in New Haven are either overrated, and not authentic, or over-priced- I don't want to pay $15 for weeknight takeout.
