Honestly, a bit disappointing. Flavor of butter chicken was good but in my whole order only about 5 pieces of chicken and loads of sauce. And certainly not spicy. Samosas we're fine but again lacking some of the intense flavors I am used to. Naan was the most disappointing-it was heavy and greasy. Almost more like roti than naan. read more

Great to have this Indo-Chinese fusion food in St. Louis for the first time since 1908. I ordered takeout here once and loved the food. The corn and ginger rice is a nice touch to the menu - the panneer and chicken were all great. Prompt and courteous service. More or less attentive as you wish. (I prefer to pay up front so I can leave at will and not have to wait to pay the bill if it gets crowded). This is my second time here. I tried to order another dish I'm sure I would love, especially from their Winter Festival Menu that includes: Jhinga Dum Masala, Lahori Murgh, Lotus Seed Thai Green Curry and other alluring dishes. They also offer a mix of Thai and Indian standards such as Pad Thai or Red Curry. I will return again sometime but this time I just had to enjoy once more their delicious Butter Chicken and Flaky Paratha. The tender chicken is delicately cooked. The flavorful sauce is gently spiced but not at all intrusive. I love seeing tiny bits of fenugreek (methi) in the sauce where I don't see that in most recipes done at other restaurants. If one serving is enough for you and yours, then you economically could place one order of this meal. Not too loud music; tidy bathroom. In other words, the place is simple and clean with spacious room between tables except for the back to back bench tables. I come when they open for my OMAD (one meal a day) and never get hungry before the next day. I wish the paratha was lighter, flakier but who am I kidding: it's good enough restaurant quality - crispy outside, and moist inside when you pull the flakes apart. I also find myself longing for a well-made lassi, but they have sodas and tea. The other reason I return before they open is to make sure I get the handicap parking spot right in front of their door. I was having car trouble and this restaurant was across the street while I waited for help. I was flustered, cold and trying to get my girls settled when a waiter came up and asked if I knew what i wanted because the kitchen was closing soon. It was my first time there so I let him know I would need time but if they're closing I could go. He was kind and let me know it is no problem. I had chicken tikka masala with naan and it was BOMB. Don't let their unassuming shopfront in tower grove fool you, Basil India has been around forever and has been only astounding every time I've gotten takeout. I tried our usual in the west end (closed now) and nice place in the loop But they could not take our reservation. Siri came up with Basil India. I will say the food is good but when you order to go, they cheap out and only give you a little rice for multiple people! Dining in is fine, but they need to work on to go orders because there is not enough rice for two people. For the price, you'd think they wouldn't hold back on that. The appetizers and entrees were tasty and we enjoyed the food. However, It was served in a rather strange manner in that there was at least a 10 minute gap between when the first dinner was served until the last one arrived (We were a group of 5.) It would have been less awkward if everyone at the table had been served at the same time, or at least close to the same time. The other thing that was odd was that the bill included a $24 service charge. When I asked the waiter what that was for, he said it was a charge for pushing two tables together. (What!!) $24 for pushing two plain tables together seems beyond excessive to me. There a many choices of places to eat along South Grand but we decided to try this, as we both like Indian food. Not very crowded on a Saturday evening but it was Memorial weekend. Very polite staff, quick to seat us, bring water (I love that he asked if we wanted ice or not, as I prefer none). We had time to review the menu and the server was helpful with answers. I got Hakkan noodles with vegetables and asked for medium heat. It was perfect - spicy but not numbing my tastebuds, and was not oily like stir-fry can sometimes be. My husband got Butter Chicken, his favorite and it was also very good. He wanted to lick the bowl! The place was clean and neat, and if it had been crowded the tables were spread enough that conversation would still be comfortable. We were just a bit disappointed in the naan as it was thinner than we are accustomed to and more oily. Still tasty though. We will return another time and hope it is just as good. read more

I went to Basil India tonight after being recommended multiple times by a friend, I was told it's a must-try - it was beyond disappointing to say the least. When we walked in (after making a reservation) the restaurant was empty aside from one table, after getting the menu we noticed the menu seemed to be Asian fusion and had a slim amount of actual Indian food. We ordered our appetizer and found it having a decent kick but no flavor aside from maybe being sweet. After ordering Naan for $5 which is abnormally expensive, we were presented with very odd, small naan, for the price the amount of bread here is terrible. Both entrees were a large disappointment, the appetizer was spicier than a "SPICY/HOT" level entree. Nothing had any real flavor, I'd say the appetizer was the only half decent item we tried, everything was expensive and a minority of the menu was Indian the only upside is the speedy service. If you're looking for decent - let alone authentic Indian do not go here. read more

Ordered take-out a few weeks ago and tried the Butter Chicken and Paneer Tikka Masala. Both were so good that I brought my family to dine in the next week! The butter chicken (I had it with paneer the second time) is my absolute favorite, and the whole fam gave it top marks. Unlike tikka masala from other places, the tikka masala here is more of a golden color and has a very earthy taste. The only negative is that the service could use some work. We had a reservation for 5 people at 7 pm and the restaurant closed at 9 pm. When I asked if we could order appetizers and our mains later, our server told me it was getting too late and the kitchen would close. That was very weird. Many tables came in and got service after we were sat, even as we were leaving. BUT the food is irresistible and I will be back. read more
