You have to know what you're coming to Basell's for in order to appreciate it. There is nothing fancy about this NF institution. It's a time capsule "greasy spoon" where you get a genuinely good and fresh breakfast, huge portions, for very cheap. Ask any local about Basell's and they'll tell you memories of coming here after the bars closed way back in the day, or just coming for breakfast when they were kids. You can feel the multiple decades of life when you walk in. I love that they've kept the charm and aren't the least bit interested in gentrifying themselves. Walking into Basell's was like walking back into the 50's in all respects- the service, the decor and the prices. I challenge anyone to eat a whole meal on their own, I love my food and managed not quite half of the fried chicken. I think we took more home than we ate. The service was literally straight out of a movie, the waitress was lovely and could have come straight from central casting and you know a diner is good when the waitress eats there on her day off. If and when we get back to Niagara Falls we will be back to Basell's for sure, and will try the breakfast as well as a dinner. All in all it was fantastic. read more

Cozy diner with tasty food, only a few minutes away by car from the touristy part of Niagara, but feels a world away. Food was actually tasty - e.g. I generally hesitate to order cabbage rolls because nobody makes them right, but the "cabbage roll soup" at this place was actually delicious. Even simple things like garden salad and chicken fingers were noticeably better prepared than at your average diner. My friend and I had breakfast at Basell's yesterday morning before biking the wine route to and from Niagara on the Lake, and it was just what we needed to get through the day! Since the servings are enormous, I ordered a "half order" of the Quebec pancakes, or a stack of three pancakes with two cuts of Canadian bacon (the regular order comes with four pancakes). I was only able to eat two pancakes and one slice of the bacon, though, but my friend finished the other pancake and sampled some of the second piece of bacon, which she loved. She ordered two eggs, over-easy, with bacon and toast, which she also enjoyed. The Quebec pancakes, made with Aunt Jemima mix and an added egg for fluff, were tasty, as was the Canadian bacon. I also ordered a medium orange juice as the glasses of juice run small, and we both ordered coffee, which was diner-style decent. With all the tourist traps in Niagara Falls, this place is a little gem. Yes, the place doesn't look like much from the outside and the interior and decor is outdated, but the food and the service (not to mention portion vs price ratio) make totally up for it. We came here for dinner on a Sunday evening and decided to order the prime rib dinner (only served on the weekend!) as well as the cheeseburger. The prime rib dinner comes with a few choices and we decided on apple juice as a drink as well as fries as the side. It also came with coleslaw as well as a veggie medley and a dinner bun with butter. The meat was amazing! So flavorful and juicy. I'm usually not a big fan of roasts, but this was the best one I have ever tasted. The coleslaw and fries were also pretty good. The cheeseburger came with fries and coleslaw. Again, everything tasted great. The patty looked as if it had been store bought, however it was not dry at all and had a good flavor. This was definitely a decent burger. Portion sizes are quite large here. We shared the 2 meals between the 3 of us (2 adults and 1 child with a very healthy appetite) and it was just the right amount of food for us. The service is wonderful and the food came out in no time. I didn't the catch the name of the waitress, but it was a very sweet older lady who really wanted to make sure that we were happy with our food. She even made sure that we received a complimentary ice cream at the end when we had finished the plates, claiming this was part of the prime rib dinner. (I don't think it actually was since it was not part of the description. ;)) Finally, let me tell you that the prices are great here. Time warp! Great little place with all the usual good meals you could expect for the family with less sticker shock. Ordered a garden salad for lunch and it too was a time-warp dish: fresh crispy iceberg lettuce, green peppers, cucumbers, horse radish (yup!, don't see these much anymore in a salad) with italian dressing served up in a topped up open jar with a table spoon. Salad was just the way I had it as a kid. I doubt you'll find a salad like this anywhere else. Refreshing! Others items we ordered were: Ruben with fries and chicken fingers. I heard this place was sold (back in April) so it looks like there be changes to this nostalgic diner (everything in this place is pristine, clean and all the restaurant equipment is in full working order. HUGE PORTIONS This is a super old school breakfast joint in Niagara Falls. Time Warp is a great definition. My wife and I ordered 2 regular breakfasts. Mine came with game which equates to 7-8 slices of ham and my wife's breakfast came with bacon (10 slices). The best part about this place is that the large portions meals are actually pretty good. This is high quality ingredients. The only con here is the service. I think that atmosphere breeds the slow service so I give it a pass, but breakfast took 40 minutes to come out. I would describe this place as ghetto fabulous. It definitely embodies what the true Niagara Falls, Canada is: a place stuck in the past, with not much of a future. Yeah, yeah, people think Niagara Falls is so romantic and awesome, but step outside the touristy sections for a bit and you'll find Basell's, and you'll see the real Niagara Falls. Anyway, this place has cheap prices and all-day breakfast! I had the veal parmesan and it was great, even if the soup was a bit salty. after having a terrible breakfast at Perkins, I knew I had to look up where to go for lunch and I found some good reviews on this place. It won't win any awards on decor. It must be from the 50's...maybe longer? It's a diner that makes what I call old english fare...so liver and onions, hot beef sandwiches, clubhouse sandwishes etc etc.. we had the chicken fingers special (came with soup or juice apple, orange or tomato), coleslaw, fries and I think 10 chicken fingers for 12.95!!! It was insane for that price. I think we paid $10 for 3 fingers the night before! anyways, also had clubhouse which used real turkey (not the sliced deli stuff) and bacon, tomato, lettuce. It was huge! I had a hard time getting my mouth around it! LOL My friend got the hot beef sandwich. I think that was the least favourite. the beef was just so-so. the portion was big and we all ended up taking some to go. Not much for vegetarians except maybe grill cheese and if you eat fish, fish and chips but if you eat meat, and looking for a cheap place to go eat, this will fill the bill. There weren't too many options for an early breakfast on Sunday in Ontario/Niagara falls, so we were happy to find a place not too far away from where we'd been staying. The prices were very cheap (under $30 USD for a full breakfast for all 4 of us!), and it was a no-brainer that the best deal was the early bird Basel house special, which was eggs, bacon or sausage, house hash browns, and toast. No complaints about the food, except that the hash browns were quite literally swimming in a pool of oil and butter. It kind of grossed us out so we didn't touch that. First of all, I just want to start out my saying our server was the only part of this place that earned any stars. She was a sweet lady who made jokes with us and was very attentive. Now for the restaurant, tourists beware. While there is a lack of decently priced food in the area do not go here. The food is has no seasoning and something just seems off about the flavor, as if all the ingredients come frozen from the local dollar store. I did some digging, and while apparently this place used to be really good, it was recently sold by the original owners and turned into what it is now. It honestly feels like an American Chinese restaurant trying to serve Canadian/American dishes in an American diner and it fails at that in a catastrophic way. The only positive thing I can say about this place is the service is friendly and the portions are large. The food was terrible. My chicken tasted like it had been in the freezer for a long time. I was looking for somewhere for breakfast and there isn't much in the area besides Basell's. This is a diner that does breakfast. However, the quality isn't too good and the prices aren't too cheap which is why I was a bit disappointed. I got French toast and poached eggs. Visited niagara for the long weekend. Have heard good reviews about Bassell and decided to give it a try. They are well-knowned for their Club House sandwich and so I ordered it along with a bowl of homemade vegetable soup. Was not disappointed. The portion size is huge and the turkey was fresh, the bacon was crispy the way I like, the fries were delicious too. The soup was good and homely for a cold day. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here. Will come back again on my next visit to niagara :) read more

There aren't many places like this anymore, which is a mixed blessing. Our server was very friendly and the restaurant has authentic 1950's decor, but the menu has not been updated since then either. I was really hoping to get real maple syrup for my pancakes, but no luck (only Aunt Jemima). I guess that I'm more of a nouveau cuisine type of girl. We were in town visiting and wanted a place for lunch off of the tourist strip. We had the chicken finger wrap and turkey wrap. The tomatoes were sliced thick and the turkey was real turkey.
