The time had come for me to get a manicure but I didn't know where to go. Thankfully, a coworker of mine recommended that I visit Basecoat as she said "they're the best." I went on a Saturday night so it was not super busy. They allow walk-ins so I was able to go in and not wait at all to get my essential manicure. The woman who did my nails was very nice and sweet and did a fantastic job. She was recently new to the shop and said she enjoyed it very much. It was only $20 so pretty reasonable for such a manicure. Everyone I met inside was friendly. The nice touch of West Elm furniture also made the place pop and gave it a relaxing vibe. I definitely think I have found my spot in the city for my nails. read more

I made an appointment for 12:30 yesterday. I arrived at 12:29 and signed in. Someone said hello and that was it. I waited for OVER an hour before someone came to me to pick out a color. No acknowledgement of my wait time or apology. I said I would just let it go if my nails came out how I wanted. They did not. I paid over $100 for a basic acrylic on top of my real nails. I was also cut and bleeding on 3 of my fingers. I'm extremely disappointed and will not be back. I don't understand the need to make an appointment if it isn't even honored. I have never left a bad review on my life, as I try to be understanding, but I don't feel like my time or business was considered at at all. read more

I feel like the time spent here was egregious to say the least. I went here once before and the experience wasn't terrible considering I was a walk-in (even though I told them I had an appt and scheduled one). Took like 30 mins to get sat but there is a nail tech shortage in salons so I didn't complain much... my nails lasted quite a bit so it was fine. Now the second time was trash... I scheduled an appt. The parking isn't great so I did show up a min or two after my intended time to be serviced but it wasn't busy either... that didn't stop me from being sat 30-45 minutes after the fact for the pedicure portion. Other people were sat before me which was frustrating. After my pedicure I was taken to do my manicure and one girl started my job and moved me to someone else... I showed a design and needless to say it was a C grade effort but she tried her best! The killer was all of this took 3 hours... this is not a 3 hour service, dang sure not over 100 dollars worth either. Long story short, Basecoat on 5th is not based. 0/10 do not recommend. read more

What a disappointment! After seeing so many good reviews, I called for an appointment and was told no problem. I showed up about 10 min early and signed in. There were several walk-ins and only a few people performing manicures and pedicures. I did appreciate the overall look of the place and polish selection. However I had other places to be that day and 45 min after my appointment time with no update on when they could take me, I had to leave. read more

I'm really sad because I really wanted to like this place and was so excited to go. My friends and I are all in grad school with minimal time for ourselves and wanted to come here as a treat. We made an appointment over a week ago and upon arrival we're frowned upon and told "we are short staffed." We arrived 15 min prior to our appointment and informed them we were okay to wait but had other commitments in the next 2 hours in which we were told "just be patient." While we waited, others walked in with appointment times AFTER ours and were seen, in, and out before we were. It took 2.5 hours for our pedicures, that were nothing but average. Super upset. My friends pedicure that she paid over $50 for still had hangnails and ingrown nails left... :/ also a $2.50 card fee that we were never told about until time of payment. Overall-- better off going to Genesis :/ read more

Happen upon this place today...don't usually write reviews but Quincy was absolutely meticulously amazing!!! Have probably easily had mani/pedis in over 25 states and the Rx pedicure by Quincy was the best pedicure I've ever had in life. Typically when you pay for the more expensive pedicure, the technician focuses on massaging and not on what's offered/needed for the specific customer. He took his time during the entire pedicure - hit every dry spot and didn't rush at all. Got a gel manicure with matte finish and it was an as expected finished product. If you have a chance I'd suggest stopping and getting Quincy to change your life! read more

My first Yelp review but this was the worst experience ever. I wish I could post a picture of how they made my foot bleed. Two hours and 15 minutes just to get my pedicure, ended up having to skip the manicure I wanted to get because they made me late to my dr appointment. So, I got a pedicure for an upcoming event but had to wear a bandaid on my foot from the two sores I had from her rubbing me so hard I bled. They also don't post their prices and there were all kinds of up charge fees. Huge waste of money. read more

This is my first time here and will I be back? Maybe only because of convenience but won't pay for anything else other than a basic gel pedicure. I paid $55.00 for the deluxe I think that is what it was called and while the nail color is fine the removal of dry skin is not. If I am paying to have my feet done I would like to have my heals removed of skin. The girl was nice who did my nails and it was nice she spoke English. The place was clean and modern but the chairs didn't have massagers and the tubs didn't have jets. I'm from Pittsburgh so maybe it's a northern thing? Who knows, but I am not impressed with this place. I was maybe in there for 30 mins if that while I got a half assed pedicure worth 55.00. Anyone have hand lotion? read more

I am always on the hunt to find a place to get a pedicure. This is my first time coming here and I believe I will be coming back for various reasons. One, they are right across the street from my work place. So whether I want to come on my lunch or come after work, I have either options which is a bonus. The vibe I get from this place is incredible. It's so quiet and laid back. Usually I've gone to nail spas and they are extremely busy or extremely full. So far this place and very quiet and not so busy. It's not your typical nail spa where you have the chairs that massages you or the water jet style foot base. It's different and I like different. I love that I had slices of oranges and limes in my water. Oh and the hot towel and the leg and foot massage my nail tech gave me, just gave me so much like. Overall I will be back no problem. read more

New to the Birmingham area and wanted To find a place similar to the nail salon I had back home. Well, I did not find that here. I had the worst experience of my life. First they started by frying my skin by soaking my whole hands in acetone to get my dip polish off. They should have used cotton balls and foil like all other salons to keep the acetone primarily in the nail. Nope they had me leave my hands soaking in acetone for 45 MINUTES. I kept pulling them out to hint that it was too much but they did not understand (my fault for not speaking up but i just don't have the balls). And then as if it couldn't get any worse... i asked for French. I very basic design that every salon I've ever been to knows how to do very quickly and easily. This took my technician FOREVER. As if she had never done French before. Which if she had not, i understand everyone needs to learn but ask your customer first. She used a design tool and spent forever on each single nail. For my French pedicure she was faster... still used the design tool. When it came to the hands, she took forever doing the dip and then spent 8 minutes ON EACH NAIL, doing just the French tips. 80 minutes for painting the tips, not even including the manicure time. Thank God i didn't need acrylic tips of anything. Never in my life have i devoted 3 hrs to a nail salon, and i get the same design each time i go. So i paid an outrageous amount of money for wasted time, extremely damaged and burnt skin, and the nail polish itself was very sloppy, my nails don't even feel smooth like they should... I will never recommend this place to anyone, and I will never go back. Unless you want your skin to sloth off from the acetone like mine is, do yourself a favor and save your money. read more

Will not be back! Waited over an hour for a pedicure and manicure. Worst manicure I have ever had. I wanted French tips and even showed the technician a picture. Nails were filed unevenly, tips were uneven, nails not fully painted, and they were chipped. Frankly, I could have done a better job myself. I told the front desk receptionist that I was not pleased with my manicure once I was finished. She questioned me then asked me to "wait a few minutes" and they would have the technician "touch up" my nails. I told her this was not possible at this time because I had already been in the salon for ~3 hours. Also, it would be impossible to touch up these nails without taking off the nail polish completely. There was no apology and no talk of a refund. Again, do not recommend and will not be back. read more

I am so happy that there is finally a nail salon downtown - it's a great spot, Easy to get to, I just ran there on my lunch break! The salon itself is BEAUTIFUL, gorgeous decor and very clean. Staff was friendly! It was quick but I was the only one in there. At first my dip manicure looked pretty rough but after a complaint (I should've spoken up sooner but I was in a rush!). I was quickly contacted by the manager and he was very nice and helpful, I later came back and got my dip color redone by the same guy who did it the first time and it was perfect! He did the best manicure I've had in a LONG time. Attention to detail and pristine work much like the inside of the place. He was also SO nice to chat with. They had an Awesome selection of OPI colors. I'm a basic manicure kind of girl using classic polish, that manicure lasted me 2 SOLID weeks and into week 3 with only a few chips on my most "used" nails. Well done! Ridiculously expensive for subpar work. I got a dip manicure. $69. Extra $5 for shaping my nails? So that's not including in a manicure apparently? I'm from Seattle, much higher living cost yet I can get a basic dip manicure for $40-$45. For some reason this establishment in Alabama, a state with $7.25 minimum wage, things $69 is ok. Also - if shaping costs an extra $5 it should be good. This is supposed to be coffin shape. I can understand expensive nails, however, I asked for something super simple and it was not done well. Would not go back. read more

Do not go to this nail salon. We had 3 appts and they only staffed 2 techs for the appointments. Longest manicures ever, and I woke this morning to a cracked and pealing mess. When I called to express concern about them using a poor product, I was told there was nothing wrong with the product. I asked to come in and have them confirm that. When I arrived, she confirmed they it was in fact poor top coat as well as poor application causing the terrible result. Because of it being faulty product used on my nails, I asked for it all to be removed. They refused and said they would only take off the top coat. I expressed that I was uncomfortable with any of the product remaining on my nails given that they could confirm the issues were both application and poor product. In the end, I did advocate for a refund and received it. Do not go here! I have never had poor quality products put on my nails and then a salon refuse to take it all off once they confirmed it was an issue with their product. Disgusting!!!! Yes, I did become rude with them. I'm not risking the health of my nails to subpar products! read more

I was so excited to try this new modern nail spa and it did NOT disappoint! Not only did my manicure turn out perfectly (at a really great price), but I was treated very well even when the spa got busy at times and got to enjoy the new spa's modern décor/ seating. I like nothing more than getting my nails done in a neat and clean place, and that's exactly what Basecoat on Fifth delivered! I opted for the traditional gel manicure, which was fantastic but they also offered the dip, traditional polish and several types of specialty manicures/pedicures. I will be back very soon!! read more

Basecoat is by far THE BEST NAIL SALON IN BIRMINGHAM. I've been an on/off again resident of this city for 10 years and never have I had this experience in the city. I brought my mother (who hadn't had a pedi in years) and my little brother (who never had a mani or pedi) so it was interesting to start. Jan and Quincy were quick, professional, accommodating, friendly, personable, and did amazing work. I can't thank you all enough for no only providing top notch service but creating an experience my family and I will never forget for my mothers 50th birthday. read more

Highly recommend! I called for a same day appt. They got me in quickly. Granted it wasn't a busy time of the day or week. The pedi cure was relaxing. No massage chair needed the seat was comfortable and they had a reasonable selection of pedicure prices. Quincy and Leddy were fabulous and worked with me to get the look I wanted for my toes and fingernails. They were awesome! read more

A customer next to me too mentioned the same thing. You sort of slide out of them and can't sit comfortably at all! If I go back, it'll have to be for a pedicure!
