    Live insects
    Rob G.

Worst stay possible, rude staff except for mike. Bugs everywhere, bug guts on walls of freshly "cleaned" rooms. Suage smell in 504a/b. Dead and live insects throughout. Just awful! No communication, and no resolution.

    Enjoying the sun and surf.

This is our first time here. We love Duck, NC. My husband and I exchanged a week at Barrier Island. We have a one bedroom, with 1/2 kitchen. Units 500 (furthest from the beach) We are not huge fans of microwaves, but the unit was equiped with one and an electric skillet, 2 burner heat plate, toaster, pots, pans and enough dishes for two!! It was a pleasant surprise. We eat in a lot. There are also several bbqs outside each housing unit. The couch could use updating, and a new bathroom floor. But it worked perfect for us. The beach is amazing and that's what we came for. There is a lot of wild life and resident kitty's. We would come here again. It's quiet, safe, and very close to the beach. Oh they have 2 pools one indoor and one big pool outdoors. They have activities as well. We did not used them.

I first came here in 1987 and loved it so much I bought a timeshare. Nearly 30 years later; same carpets, same furniture, same appliances. This once jewel on the beach has become a tired and run down sad caricature of a beach resort. I see some buildings have gotten a facelift with new stairs and siding, so perhaps the management is at long last spending the annual maintenance fees they charge each owner. This resort is long past due for a refresh. The spiders are numerous, the windows are cruddy, the plumbing is louder than the ceiling fans, but not as loud as the upstairs neighbors. Barrier Island Station is a "former" premier property with a great location. They seem to think location is enough to keep people coming back. I came back, and it's just sad to see how the years of neglect have taken their toll on this once beautiful property. Just pathetic. The worst sin I can tell you about is the poor housekeeping. There are dead bugs on every window, dead bugs on every outdoor light fixture, and lots of dead bugs on the carpet behind the couch. UGH! We had to buy a shower curtain, towels, and sheets because the linens provided were industrial quality - think prison linens. The shower curtain was moldy and thin. The towels are OK, but once we saw how the place was cleaned, we decided to use our own towels as well. Wait a few years for them to update these condos before booking your vacation.

Very nice resort in the quaint town of Duck. The good: Very spacious units with full kitchen which was stocked well in our unit. Two bathrooms with a jetted or jacuzzi tub off of the master bedroom upstairs and a full bathroom with shower down. Having a washer and dryer in the unit was super convenient! ( Make sure to run dryer during the day as it does heat up the bedroom making it warmer for sleeping) Our balcony faced the ocean and the outdoor pool which was a nice view. The resort has daily activities but I think my favorite was the movie night by the pool. The snack shack located near the beach was also a nice touch. The staff were always pleasant and helpful. The not so good: There are A LOT of stairs!! If you are unfortunate enough to land a top floor unit you will despise the stairs. Having to lug all of your stuff up those stairs will not be pleasant. If you are traveling with anyone with a physical disability I don't think this is the place for you which also brings me to my next point... the trek to the beach. It was quite the walk to get to the beach from our unit. We didn't want to pay to rent beach chairs so we brought our own but this meant having to carry chairs, towels, cooler, beach bags, umbrellas and anything else down those stairs all the way around the pool more stairs then around the snack shack then down more stairs to finally hit the beach. It was 100 degrees and so humid in July that we were worn out by the time we got to the beach. The trek back was worse due to the climbing of the dreaded stairs to our unit! We decided to load the car and drive to the beach the next day but since everyone else had the same idea parking was at a premium. If you couldn't tell by now.. I hated the stairs. The units were nice but a little outdated. Not enough to bother me but worth the mention. There are two pull out couches and there are some extra bedding but I would suggest bringing some of your own. The blankets were not the nicest. The jacuzzi tub upstairs in our unit never worked. Management was notified but nothing was done to fix it and we never got offered a discount. We really didn't fight for it either. Water pressure in the shower was almost non existent. Look.. we made the most of our stay and made jokes about the stairs and getting in our steps and exercise. We had some great experiences and now have some great memories even though the stairs will be a legend for generations to come:) It's not all bad and it's not all good but maybe ask for a first level unit. We personally would not stay here again but there are folks who vacation here a lot and swear by it.

How did we like our stay, we had fun. After we settled down and did our room inspections. Carpet is very old, the shower caulking is cheaply designed. We were offered online to have an ocean view but when we arrived we were told they do not have rooms available with ocean view. Our credit card was charged before we arrived. The town is cute with plenty to do. Overall we had a good time.

There were so many issues with the house and the CDR maintenance staff tried to be helpful, but most issues could not be fixed at all or fixed on our last day. We vacationed in OBX every year when our kids were little and decided to do oceanfront for our kids and grandkids to have a fabulous vacation. For a $28,000 oceanfront rental property, we expected more. 1. Nails sticking up from wood decking to beach (granddaughter cut her foot) 2. No hot water in both kitchen sinks. Seriously! Many maintenance visits resulted in it getting fixed the afternoon of our last day! 3. Pool lights and pool deck lights not working. 4. Outdoor shower was pretty disgusting. 5. Pool deck and hot tub area was lacking. One single (insufficient) hose, laying in pile of sand under the house was the ONLY way to clean sandy feet. 6. Gazebo - which should be a nice outdoor gathering spot - was completely overgrown, dark and dingy, and you could not sit in there for the spiderwebs, old broken chairs and mold. Ewww. 7. 2nd floor dryer never worked the entire week. 8. House was not adequately equipped (no broom, dustpan, mop, missing trashcans etc.), and the outside doors to the decks didn't close properly, basically a HUGE disappointment. I had the opportunity to view my sister's family rental 1 mile down the beach - SAME PRICE - and it was immaculate! Shower and foot sprayer coming off the beach. Hot tub on the oceanfront gazebo. Furniture in great condition, etc. I wrote to CDR and asked for a partial refund. Below is the answer I received. "To provide a bit of background, each home is individually owned, and our role is to serve as the Rental Manager ("Agent") on their behalf. The Vacation Rental Agreement notes that refunds are not typically issued for inoperable appliances, utility interruptions, equipment malfunctions, or maintenance-related concerns." I urge you to NOT rent a house from Carolina Design Realty. They should be more aware of what a $28,000/week rental should provide and be able to negotiate with owners.

We CAREFULLY selected our home due to 2 RELYING on the elevator to get up and down the stairs. Upon arrival, one person who RELIED on the elevator due to mobility issues was UNABLE to exit the elevator. The mechanism which unlocks the door upon its arrival to the designated floor WOULD NOT UNLOCK. They rode the elevator up and down trying to exit on each floor but remained STUCK IN THE ELEVATOR. Finally, after 10 minutes and much anguish (they also suffer from heart issues and severe asthma) they were FINALLY able to exit the elevator. I placed a call to the on-call repairman who arrived a few hours later. He stated the elevator was running as it should but the elevator company would need to come out to repair the door lock because if he did it would affect the warranty for the elevator. I asked him to get in the elevator to test it be he replied he would NOT ENTER IT BECAUSE HE DIDN'T WANT TO GET STUCK INSIDE. He said a work order was submitted the week before we got there and it was SUPPOSEDLY REPAIRED. Guess what, it obviously WAS NOT. He said he'd call in an another work order but since it was September 13th they no longer worked on weekends. They would more than likely be out on Monday. This was UNACCEPTABLE as what would happen in case of an emergency with my friend who was dependent on the elevator? I called Beach Realty and spoke with their office manager on duty. She said there was no need to create scenarios that may or may not happen. SERIOUSLY??? She said there was nothing she could do and if something happened just call the fire department. She assured me she'd call with information from Atlantic Elevators. When it was late afternoon on Monday, I called Atlantic Elevators and was told they would not be out until sometime on Tuesday, September 16th. The office manager I previously spoke with was NOT happy that I called them. Fortunately, we had picked up a limited number of items at Food Lion and a large pizza before entering the house on Saturday. We were STRANDED on the top floor of this home for 3.5 days of our vacation. I would NOT leave my friend alone in that house if she experienced a medical emergency. Our other friend who has more severe mobility issues decided NOT to make the trip since they were afraid they'd arrive and not be able to use the elevator. I told the person I had been in contact with at Beach Realty that I was considering contacting an attorney because of the runaround I was getting. Her response was "YOU DON'T WANT TO MESS WITH THIS OWNER." That definitely was a serious threat from her. The weather on Wednesday and Thursday was not conducive for using the pool so we did some souvenir shopping and sightseeing after being STRANDED on the top floor for 3.5 days. Friday arrived with sun and bright blue skies. We made our way to the pool for what we thought would be a relaxing afternoon. Upon getting to the pool steps, we found a HUGE, DEAD RAT off to the side. ( I've included 2 photos). A call was made to BEACH REALTY and someone removed it between Friday night and Saturday morning. Our original check-out date was Saturday, September 20th. I called Beach Realty on Thursday to see if they AND the owner would grant us 3 extra days since the elevator wasn't in operation for 3.5 days and we were stuck on the 3rd floor. (NO ONE HAD RESERVED THE HOME FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 20-27th). The owner granted ONE EXTRA DAY.... OH WOW!!! I WILL NEVER RENT FROM BEACH REALTY, AGAIN!!! They DO NOT value their customers NOR care about their safety. If you're smart, you'll rent from another company.

Near Balcony collapse!!!…read more I've been vacationing in OBX for twenty years with various different rental companies and have never had a worse experience than with Stan White Realty and Construction. We arrived at the house to find a dilapidated deck with evidence of partial repairs. Nails popping up on the stairs and loose boards on every level. Kids had splinters Day 1. Not super clean. Old and dated. Rusty pool ladders. Flickering lights. On Day 4, after several days of spotty internet, we discovered that the internet router was connected to an outlet that turned off every time the lights were turned off. Why would you do that?!? We had multiple adults trying to work remotely throughout the week and we never knew if we'd have WiFi. But it was Day 5 that will haunt my dreams for years to come. After a rain storm, some of us (6 adults, 3 kids) went out on the second story balcony to view a double rainbow. What was awe inspiring turned horrific in an instant when I heard a loud crack and watched my husband and loved ones sink three inches into collapsing deck boards. Thankfully everyone was able to make it safely back inside. No one slept that night though. The following day's "repair" (read: twelve or so new nails shot into the boards, no inspection) and no one dared use the balcony for the remainder of the vacation. The worst part of it all was the rudeness and complete lack of empathy from the company, specifically the broker in charge Kristina. They seemed annoyed and unapologetic throughout the whole experience. To date, no compensation was rewarded for the physical and mental damages for the loss of access to the balcony and hot tub below. Edit: After multiple emails, we were first berated for leaving the house in an "unacceptable" condition (trash in bathrooms canisters, sand in the house, and two sliding doors unlocked ) and then credited a measly $500 on a $10K+ lease for "losing the time on the deck". Bitch, we almost lost LIVES due to your negligence! Edit again: They rescinded the credit!!!! No financial compensation to date. The CEO took over communication. The BBB and NC AG's have been notified. There are plenty of companies out there who rent properties with integrity and are willing to address issues with quality and care. This ain't one.
