It had been years since my last eye appt & with a new job, meant new insurance. My glasses were really scratched up & the prescription was glaringly outdated, so I needed to find a new eye doctor asap. The online appt system was fairly straightforward & easy to use (advice: be sure to properly input your insurance info when scheduling your appt -- trust me, it streamlined the entire process & you'll thank yourself later). The next day, I received a call confirming my future appt & confirming that my insurance was indeed accepted at their office. That's about as easy as it gets. At the appt, I was promptly greeted at the front desk; the office is clean, neat & well-organized. Pam was incredibly kind, welcoming & super professional. I appreciate how direct & transparent Pam was whilst placing the order for my lenses & frames. She presented all options available & made sure I was getting exactly what I requested. During my appt, Dr. Huang was very patient, knowledgeable, and incredibly thorough. The entirety of my visit was full of professionalism and guidance, and it felt like I was in good hands. Also! Very important for me: not once was I pushed for any sort of upsale for frames, lenses, etc. (unlike what I've experienced at other offices bbefore). It was clear, yet subtle that Dr. Huang was trying to help me select a pair that was, not only similar to my original frames, but within a comfortable price range for me. And I will forever be grateful for that. And a final thing to note: I requested for a copy of my Rx and not only did Dr. Huang give me a handwritten hard copy, but Pam also emailed it to me along with the invoice list that very same evening! My first time visiting Barranca Optometry was 25 years ago. I saw Dr. Raymon Huang for many years until we moved to Northern California. During that time, he prescribed several pairs of glasses for me that were far better than any I received from other optometrists--one even reversed my left and right eye prescriptions! After we moved back to Irvine, I returned to Dr. Huang. He spent almost two hours carefully examining my eyes and diagnosed me with dry eye caused by Meibomian gland dysfunction. He was the first optometrist to ever explain this to me. He and Pam then instructed me on how to use a dry eye heat pad to warm my eyelids and massage them with my fingertips to loosen the oil at home. We did a lot of research on Ortho K before getting a consultation. We were overwhelmed by the different brands and were hoping to get some answers from doctor's knowledge and experience. This optometry was the first of four we talked to. Doctor's knowledge and experience are limited. He couldn't offer any new info other than what we had already learned from the internet. He started out fine but got impatient and defensive because he couldn't answer some of our questions. The brand he uses doesn't have any details even on its own website. His package price is on the high end compared to other places. "Nice", "friendly", "funny" are not traits of a good doctor. Dr. Huang and his staff are such a pleasure to be around! I noticed that I was running low on contacts and they got me in for an appointment so promptly. From start to end, my experience at Barranca Optometry was super positive and fun (although that may be a strange word to use for any kind of medical visit haha). Dr. Huang is such a character and very dynamic, and I really enjoyed speaking with him and learning from him. He was really thorough in my examinations, and gave me a few new contacts to try out. We even went out in the sun for a bit so he could show me how transition lenses work! Pam, one of the receptionists, was so thorough in explaining everything to me and so kind. I really felt like I was being taken care of the entire time, as she was explaining the ordering/rebate process as well as details regarding my insurance. My husband, son and I were all a patient at Barranca in the past. We could never get an appt for one reason or another to return. I called back a year or so later again, couldn't get an appt. Today, years later I called explained things and that we were past patients, but haven't returned do to the inability to ever get an appt. Their website appointment site is never up to date as it showed an available time Monday and then she notified me no that that isn't correct. The office staff declines to help work us in. So this will be the last time I try to support a local business in the Woodbridge area. Very frustrating. read more

I just left this place a few hours ago and I had to turn on my computer to write this review as soon as I got home because I am in shock still. I went to this Dr. office last week, the 2 front desk ladies suggested me to get the glasses that was progressive reading glasses and I ended up paying more for it than general reading glasses which I did not mind. I understand it's reasonable to pay more to get better stuff. I picked up the glasses yesterday and found out that they did not work at all. I could see better without the glasses. When I put the glasses on, everything I read from my computer became very blurry. I asked Dr. Huang to get me a pair of general reading glasses and pay me back the price difference between the general one and the progressive one. He said no refund. He told me it was not him who talked to me about this purchase and he did not make the mistake. It was the lady who did not know Asian's face shapes...(I actually enjoyed talking to the lady and she was helpful and sweet when she was helping me to get the glass frame.) I said to him: I am a business owner myself, if my employees make any mistake, I would be responsible for that. He said: I did not make any money from you. I said: I paid out of my pocket $264 dollars, where did it go? He said: That all went to the insurance company, not me. Then I said: So you work here but you don't make anything? Then he said he would call the insurance company to ask them to call me and it was the people who made the glasses's fault..... It was really hard for me to listen to what he had to say instead of simply refund the difference and fix the problem...... read more

Mainly chose this location due to distance and because it is part of the VSP network, but I am honestly happy that I selected this office in order to get my contacts exam. Staff is super friendly and helpful with explaining the breakdown of my benefits as well as the options. Dr. Huang is professional and laid back, and at no time whatsoever pressured me to choose a certain brand over another. In fact, even though I knew I wanted daily contacts because I personally did not enjoy having to clean my contacts every day, he recommended me to opt for monthly contacts which technically would've been "cheaper" and a better choice for my use. However, I preferred to go with daily contacts because I like being able to toss the pair at night and opening a fresh pair is easier for travel and occasional use (I generally choose to wear glasses on the daily). It was also really nice that the Dr. gave me several brands to try out to see which set best fits me. Will definitely return for my annual exam as this location is convenient, easy-going, and definitely helpful! read more

5/5 highly recommend to any one looking for an optometrist. The doctor really cares about you and even gives you recommendations on how to best utilize your insurance. The doctor gives great feedback and speaks with you on what he learns about your eyes and is very thorough, willing to double check and make sure he gets the proper readings on your eyes. You can also tell that the doctor knows what he is doing and talking about and provides and shares with you his analysis. The office is clean and the staff is very friendly. We chose Barranca Optometry because it's in-network for us, nearby, and had great yelp reviews. It is in an unassuming strip mall by Barranca and Lake. Dr. Huang and his staff are really friendly, nice, helpful people. We had a good experience with customer service. Dr. Huang also conducted the eye exam with precision and thoroughness. He actually did mine twice because he said I was getting unstable results due to my dry eyes. He also gave both my husband and I tips on how to relieve our dry eyes, but did not upsell us anything. It's not the most modern or fancy office, but I'm happy with my experience here, and feel like I can trust them (which I can't say about all doctors these days, unfortunately)! read more

Had appointment with Dr. Muraoka and she seemed extremely good. It was my first eye exam so hard to tell but I asked a lot of questions and she answered them all and helped me understand a lot. When I first came in, she was working in the front and I thought she was any other worker and because of that, you kind of get more comfortable around her. My girlfriend who has these exams every year also highly praised her. So all in all a great eye doctor. On top of that, the staff in general was very friendly too. I ordered glasses with the anti-glare coating and then changed my mind. The staff went above and beyond to get the anti-glare coating removed. So I was very happy with that. Initially I was going to ding this place one star for frame selection because I thought they were missing some important brands (mostly Oakley) but after going to other places, I found this place to have a lot more reasonable prices on their frames (hovering mostly around $180-240 I think). With my VSP insurance I paid nothing for the frame. At other places I looked at, the prices were $250-400 and would need to pay much more out of pocket. The coatings are potentially also better priced but I'm not sure I'd be comparing one to one. But yeah overall happy with this place. read more

The doctor himself made instilled me with so much confusion/fear that I had to go see another optometrist to get a 2nd opinion. I've never had problems with my eyes and have been wearing contacts for almost a decade now. The recommendation he made to get specialize contacts (more expensive ) and possible surgery was absurd. On top of that, he made some inappropriate comments that were completely unnecessary. Left feeling uncomfortable, concerned, and a bit frightened. Not how you should leave an annual check up. Got a second opinion and turns out everything is fine and I'm healthy and surgery was definitely out of the question. Won't be coming back. But kudos to them for doing what's right and refunding my copay and apologizing for the unpleasant experience. read more

My husband and I have been coming here for our eye exam for over ten years. Ppl may be wondering why I never did a Yelp review until now. I don't usually do Yelp reviews that are not food related since I'm such a foodie. However, I like this office and I noticed they had a Yelp review going on, hence my review. Dr. Huang is very thorough and experienced. He diagnosed my mom's eye condition and referred her to an ophthalmologist right away for further treatment. He also noticed some abnormalities in one of my eye during an exam and referred me to an ophthalmologist for further follow up. Dr. Muroaka is the other optometrist. She is also very knowledgeable and thorough with the exam and took the time to explain all my questions. I appreciate their honesty and patience with my questions and concerns. The front office staff are all very friendly and helpful. They accommodate my schedule and got me an appointment right away. They're good at follow- up. They will take the time to go over the insurance benefits and payments. If you need eye glasses, Pam is really good at picking out just the right frame that suits your taste and look. She is knowledgeable with all the different types of frames and lenses. This office also has great selections of sunglasses and frames to choose from. Been coming here for a long time, perhaps nearing ten years now. Dr. Huang and staff are friendly, helpful, and professional, yet also have a good sense of humor. Every time I have arrived for an appointment, I am promptly taken care of. Personally, I also appreciate that I am informed of any specials they have with glasses/frames or contact lenses, and any optional extras that they offer (such as retinal OCT imaging which is a quick, neat way to have a peek at your overall retina health) without pressure to take them. As a patient, I like knowing my options and making an informed decision based on both my doctor's advice and my own needs. I highly, highly value my eyesight so I particularly appreciate the thoroughness and attentive care that Dr. Huang provides his patients. He is absolutely someone I can (and have) depended on for my eyecare needs, even answering an after hours call during a medical scare I experienced outside of regular business hours. Friendly staff but that's about their only saving grace. The first thing I noticed was that neither the staff nor the doctor wiped down any of the machines before or after I used them. No quick wipe, not even a changing of the disposable tissue-like thing that some machines have, absolutely nothing. I figured I would push through because maybe their services or the end result would be worth it. I was there for an eye exam in order to get a prescription for glasses. Not only did they not give me my prescription until the next day when I called (even though I asked them the day of and they said I needed to wait) but they had also given me a totally wrong prescription. I'm so frustrated because of how much of my time was wasted and no doubt will be as I try to figure out how to fix this. Came here a while ago but forgot to write a review until now. I came in with the intention of getting a routine eye exam and new glasses. The Dr. continuously pressured me to also do a contact lens exam. I did not want to do it as I am a college student and can not afford the extra fees, but the Dr. tried to pressure me into paying for it several times, despite me stating multiple times that I do not want to do it. In addition, he put his hand on my leg while talking to me (see Jacqueline's review below where it also happened to her) which was very uncomfortable and unprofessional. Dr. Huang came recommended to me by several In-Laws who've lived in the area longer than me, so when it came to swallow any youthful pride that might have been preventing me from admitting that my vision, especially with screens, was starting to bother me, I decided to give Barranca Optometry a try. My first ever eye exam was done by Dr. Muraoka a few years ago, and I admit that I felt a bit unsure and rushed, but in retrospect, it wasn't her, but my nerves and lack of understanding of what to expect that clouded my experience. This is not an issue as she just did my last eye exam and it went great! Over the last few years of exams and prescriptions with both Dr. Huang and Dr. Muraoka, I can honestly say that they are both extremely professional and helpful, and along with their staff, help me pick out stylish glasses that fit me very well every time. This positive review also includes their expertise in handling and maximizing the double benefit I have under both mine and my wife's employer. Buyer beware !!! Everything I once believed about this business has changed dramatically. In my opinion, based on my experiences with this provider, Pam (Manager and Doctor's Wife) is a stone lying thief. She lied to me about my UnitedHealth Care Insurance coverage and overcharged me $60.00. I filed a complaint with my Insurance Company, and they talked to Pam. She claims she only forgot to mention the cost of the Contact Lens fitting exam. (Which never took place). Too greedy and stupid to repay me $60.00 to make it all go away. Yes, I was accompanying my husband but he made stupid remarks to both of us. Making fun of someone's cultural and religion has nothing to do with an eye exam. Telling the person that if he's reading letters from right to left during exam rather than L to R because may be that's the trend in his country has nothing to do with eye exam. Telling my husband that he needs to relieve stress from his eyes and relax by looking at pretty women at work has nothing to do with eye exam. He knows how to keep a conversation going so it's not some checkup that's just very awkward.(Although the conversation was heading down to politics which we had different views on...) Due to the change of our insurance I was shopping around to find a good optometry, after searching and making some calls I called barranca opt. Staff member named Ellen was extremely friendly and so helpful, Ellen is knowledgeable and professional, after locating my insurance (which it turned out it was different ID number from what I provided her) had it been someone else they would just say sorry we can't find you! But she found it, emailed me my benefits and the correct ID. Just because of Ellen I chose to make an appointment. Dr. Haung was great! He spend so much time examining my son, he was extremely thorough with his examination also very knowledgeable, explaining everything thing with friendly smile and humor. Also, the office is very clean and they are on top of Covid protocols. And the end Pam went over all frame options, Pam was also helpful and patient going over all options.
