I work from home and have been clipping my own dog's nails for four straight years, so I don't particularly need most of the services at Bark Place. However, I got this dog sweater from this location and thought maybe my dog would wear it once or twice for pics but never again. (I'm not a huge fan of dogs wearing clothes, but I had to admit a noticeable difference with my short-haired dog not shivering during winter months while wearing two separate coats. So I backed down on making fun of dog coats. My two larger, furrier dogs in prior years never needed manmade coats.) But this sweater is turning into a Linus blanket situation. I tried putting on a "Christmas" dog coat that matched her red Xmas collar (I love festive dog collars!!!), but it was white and getting dirty too quickly. I took it off to handwash it and put the Bark Place pink sweater on my dog solely for one walk, and she's been running away ever since when I try to take it off at night. At one point, she slid under one of the bar stools in my dining room, around the corner, ran into my bedroom and into her crate, flopping down sideways. Even if you don't need anything else in Bark Place, take note of the dog clothes. A bunch of my relatives crochet and knit, so I already knew the dog sweater was solid quality but expected it to wear. It still looks brand new, and my dog is glued to it. When I take it off to bathe her or what I *think* is comfier to sleep at night, she growls and leaps for it. I think a pink sweater and a red bow collar clash, but she couldn't care less about me being the fashion police. I'm tickled by how much she likes THIS particular sweater but has never ever been this into any other dog clothes gift (that I usually return) in four straight years. Don't sleep on the dog sweaters, I guess, unless you're my own dog who will turn over sideways so she CAN sleep in hers. read more

I am so happy Bark Place is nearby. The staff is super friendly and they seem to genuinely care about the dogs. I take my dog Cali for day care periodically and she enjoys her time there. One of the best things about Bark Place is their flexibility and personal attention. One time, I wanted to use day care but I knew I wasn't able to pick her up before closing and several staff members figured out a way to take care of my dog until I could get there. I have no words to say how amazing this place is. It's just amazing! Please take your dog here to get groomed. I am very picky when it comes to grooming (so picky I manage my dog myself because I'm just worried they would shave his coat) and I will say my mind is now at ease because I found the perfect groomer! I will say they do book out 2 weeks in advance so just be sure to know this prior. Made an appointment for my fluff monster because it was beyond time. I was so worried he might have to be shaved bald because he did have a couple mats but the groomer assured me that he would not have to do that because my dogs coat was manageable. He also shared some tips on how I can brush my dog to avoid mats in the future which I was grateful for. Very kind, helpful, and my dog was crazy about him! Now when I picked my dog up, he looked better than I could imagine! The groomer did his thang and then some! My dog looks like a million bucks, smells fantastic and I think he knows it. ;) also the prices are very reasonable, 55 for a standard groom for a small dog. I will be back Bark Place! Took my toy poodle to this local spot for grooming. The receptionist who answered the phone was very friendly and professional when scheduling an appointment. There is no self parking for this place so you have to park in the street but not a big deal. The groomer who greeted was very cool and friendly. He was very good with my dog. The haircut didn't take too long and was very pleased of the service. Particularly the nails being cut and shaved because other groomers I been to never do a good job but this place did awesome! Overall great experience and happy with the grooming. I highly recommend this place for sure!! read more

Surprised to see such great reviews from a newly expanded facility, but unfortunately that isn't the case when it comes to the situation I'm finding myself in last night. I had just arrived home after a weekend of relaxation, and just picked up our dog a little after 6; just to find that our dog was abused, physically. She had some torn skin off from her paw-pads along with a deep red color between all of her toes, which looked as though she was standing perhaps in some chemicals of some kind. Also, several teeth marks throughout her body, legs, tail, neck where blood was drawn. Now I'm no professional when it comes to how to I run a facility like this, but if the dogs that are kept there aren't getting along, then they need to be separated. It's just that simple. Not to mention what actually goes on when the keepers aren't paying attention to the dogs.... Are they free roaming and abusing one another?? I am sorry to say that I will never be bringing my dog back to this kennel, and fearful of the owners not caring, it gives me anxiety to even think about asking for my money back. This just is an unacceptable situation I've found myself in. read more

We are so thankful for Bark Place and can't say enough good things about it! We brought our 4 month old Havavese here for her first grooming, knots and all, and we got back a beautiful and clean pup. I almost didn't recognize her sans fur but we were so happy! And she smelled so good! The staff were very friendly and professional. They explained exactly what they were going to do to our little baby and said she'll be ready in 2 hours. I got a call exactly 2 hours later that Bella was ready to be picked up. We have also signed up for doggie day care at Bark Place. Bella had her first day yesterday and again the staff were great. Bella was pooped from all the playtime she had. And again she came home smelling so good. The only thing that I would add if I could would be a live feed camera, where I'd be able to watch Bella during playtime online. I can't emphasize how thankful I am for finding this place. My perfect sweet 3lb dog turns into a wild banshee at the mere sight of nail clippers. She runs away, struggles, and even tries to nip at me. It was getting so bad I even bought a DREMEL (pet nail file) but to no avail. In order to avoid being cited for animal cruelty I had to do something about her nails. My gut told me to consult a professional and I checked YELP and found Bark Place. I booked an appointment with Kaitlyn (spelling?) and was ready to go. Due to the polar vortex I had to reschedule, and Anthony (the owner) made the process so simple and was nice about it! I went in today and met George (Kaitlyn and Danny). George is one of those people who you feel like you can instantly trust with your dog right away. He's calm and knowledgeable. My dog was calm when I handed her to him and I said my good-byes. She went through the blue door where there were several large dogs barking and truthfully it made me a little nervous (I don't get nervous easily). Within five minutes George walked out with my dog and all four of her paws were cut down and filed (so I would not get scratched). George "gave her a ten on being the perfect Chihuahua" and from now on I will only go to him! Her nails look fantastic and she is happy that she can now run without the "clickity" noise! This review is long overdue. If I could give 10 stars, I would. Our pup has been coming to Bark Place for almost 5 years now. I can write a whole long story about all the ways in which Anthony and his crew (special thanks to Ami, Dan and Caitlyn) at Bark Place have been absolutely incredible and helpful with our little girl's specific needs, and they have essentially been part of our extended family for the last 5 years. I dread considering the idea of having to find a different daycare if we were to ever leave Chicago. We did a week of boarding. The free trial to make sure she would be good with the other dogs went great. My dog seemed happy when she left like she'd had a good time. I should have trusted my instincts to be concerned and ask more questions when I dropped her off but by that point I had a plane to catch and it was too late to make other arrangements. She has regular medication she takes three times daily and the owner was very surprised she would need medication after closing time at 6:30. What?! Is there no one there watching dogs overnight? Well no problem as long as she gets along with cats she can come home with him overnight and he'll personally make sure she gets her meds. Okay.... But first he has to reschedule when she gets all her doses to fit with his personal schedule as opposed to what she's been used to or her neurologist recommended. Should be ok, I get it, I know there is some wiggle room. Fast forward to picking up my dog. First of all she looks so lethargic that I almost wonder if she's been drugged, and takes a while to warm back up to me or even act like she recognizes who I am. I get it, boarding is stressful and she's had a long week. They tell me she was "a dream!" Ever since bringing her home though she refuses to take her medications. She's always been excited to have her pills in a pill pocket treat. I tried smaller pieces, peanut butter, banana (her favorite) and she keeps spitting them out. I get bit by my own dog. Finally I called to ask Anthony if he had any issues and he sheepishly admits yes and he's kind of had to shove them down her throat the last few days but "other than that she was great." Excuse me?! Why wouldn't you call me and let me know you're having issues so we could try to figure out a solution instead of turning something that used to not be an issue into a stressful reactive experience. I finally got her to take them in a little bit of wet food and hopefully we will readjust to a normal schedule and routine soon. But we won't be back for boarding. I don't know, there are so many good reviews and I'd heard nothing but good things from neighbors. Maybe I'm high maintenance and they're great as long as your dog doesn't need regular medical attention. But I won't be back next time we travel. read more

Bark Place is a great place!!!! Today I took my 9 month, 125lb St Bernard " puppy" for a first time haircut, I was nervous, so was he. The minute u walk in you are put at ease by the warm greeting from Eli, he is an asset to the business, super friendly, informative and great salesman for the other services they provide. The cut....is beautiful, my puppy, Mc Lovin looks so good, he smells good, the cut is even, no nicks, attention to detail is obvious. Couldn't be happier. Every pup I encountered seemed happy to be there. It is clean, has lots of fun dog stuff for purchase, including food, it's a one stop shop for your fur baby. Mc Lovin is looking forward to his next visit, me too. read more

Updated 11/6/07: I have now been going to Bark Place every Monday for a couple of months and I am beyond pleased. My review below is accurate. The owner is friendly, responsible and welcoming and his staff is great. My dog loves going there (tail wagging hysterics as soon as we get out of the car) and I like knowing that he is well cared for. One thing that I didn't mention below is the cute little storefront that they have. Even if you don't take your dog to Bark Place for daycare, you should stop in and visit the store. They carry great toys, a nice selection of leashes/ collars, an array of organic treats and a great selection of food. I've found their prices to be comparable to or better than other local pet boutiques. I'm really a huge fan of Bark Place. Clearly. ----------- My caveat is that we just tried Bark Place for the first time yesterday... I will update this review if anything changes, but I hope it doesn't! I have been very pleased with all of my interactions with the Bark Place staff, including the owner. I ran into the owner on a walk with my dog. I told him that I was looking for doggie daycare and he gave me his card. I stopped in one day and liked the place a lot, so I made a reservation for my pup. Bark Place is a smaller doggie daycare than most, which is why I really liked it initially. It's also a bit more expensive than some, but I felt good about leaving my dog there, so it sort of makes up for the extra few bucks. The owner has been great about answering all of my questions and following up on some of my requests without a reminder - something that I really appreciate. He didn't even laugh at me when I called 3 hours after dropping my dog off to check on him. Anyway, at the end of my dog's stay he was happy and tired and, as a special treat for me, he smelled good. I thought he would stink since he'd played with dogs all day, but he didn't. I'm sure they just wiped him down, but I definitely appreciated it. I've been taking my dog to Bark Place for over a year now whenever I go out of town and she loves it there. The staff is always friendly and treat the dogs with respect - Saffie is always excited when we go in and wants to stay even when it's time to go. They have a large room for all of the dogs to play in upstairs and more play area and crates for sleeping downstairs. I've also bought lots of treats and fun dog-stuff there - they have a great selection of treats and toys and collars and everything you can think of. If you ever wanted strange animal body parts for your dog to chow down on, they've got it (just ask about the bully sticks...). Another great grooming experience at Bark Place. Our Betty had started to resemble a drunken Goldie Hawn and she needed a makeover. The problem was we hate that short hair, fresh from the groomer look. We explained what we wanted and that is exactly the cut we got! Plus Betty loves to go there. The Bark Place and owner, Anthony honored my free service in lieu of fiasco that I (and my puppy Huey) endured the first time. Overall, the service was great! I dropped Huey off at 10AM, the groomer and owner were waiting for him and totally prepared. The space was clean and all the dogs who were in the doggy-sitting area were clean, quiet and happy. Mind you, it was almost 100 degrees outside and Bark Place was cool and relaxing as ever for those pups! Huey was done at 2pm (as promised). I received a phone-call informing me that he was ready to be picked up. I arrived around 2:30-45 and the wait didn't seem to be a problem at all. Huey was freshly groomed, smelling good and happy as could be. His coat was super soft and the shampoo/conditioner smell lingered on for almost 4 days! Definitely happy with the service and glad everything was cleared up with no problems. I'd recommend Bark Place for grooming services. read more

He does alot to support local neighborhood groups. I just moved to Rogers Park, and my owners have been looking for a great daycare for me. I'm so glad they found Bark Place... it rocks my doggie world! At just $23 / day (10-day pack) this place is a steal, compared to my $30-35 daily tuition in both Evanston and Minneapolis. Not only is Bark Place affordable, it's also a top notch daycare. It's not a huge place, but I make the most of it... when I come home, I am drop-dead exhausted! The staff is super nice to me and my parents, and they even fit me in for a quick & cheap nail trim (2 minutes while my owners waited). I appreciated that it was NOT a hack job that my mom has to frustratingly file down afterward, like others I've had. This was my best mani/pedi so far! So I am not really sure what to think. I brought my pup here several times. She is a very hyper pup - but not abnormally so for her age and breed. And she does follow commands. She just LOVES everyone and can't help herself. On one occasion she had an injury which no one said anything to me about - I didn't notice until I got her home that her ear was covered in blood and that she had a big hole in it. Accidents happen when you have a bunch of dogs rough housing - but given the size of the hole in her ear, someone should have heard her yelp something fierce when it happened but no one said anything to me. I did call them and they apologized that they didn't notice it. Ok..... On another occasion, I picked her up and she had a couple of torn nails that were bleeding on her front paws. Apparently, she was crated and was digging at the bottom of the crate. Ok.... I said I didn't want her crated anymore since she freaks out over it. She was only going for half days anyway and never should have been crated to begin with. The last few times I intentionally went to pick her up a bit earlier than I was expected and she was in a crate again. Again, she was digging. I was given different reasons - they had a new dog that needed to go to the dog run to use the bath room, or they were getting ready to clean up the room. Ok.... Half day goes until 1 - at which time the full day dogs are crated while the staff clean and whatever else. I was showing up well before 1. Every time I picked her up, I always asked if she had any problems and I would get a good report on her. I do wonder if they just couldn't handle her level of hyper. But then maybe they should have told me instead of just putting her in a crate? On the days she was in the crate, my pup was velcroed to me the rest of the day. It kind of defeats the purpose of sending her to day care if she has security issues from it and doesn't actually socialize with the other dogs. Aside from these things - she seemed to have a good time when she was playing with the other dogs. I never saw anything horrible. I just can't see bringing my pup for a few hours of play time only to have her crated while there. In all fairness - I never mentioned it to the owner. It just never seemed worth it to me since she wasn't abused or anything. And this is more of a luxury for her since I am home full time with her. So we just decided not go back. Just not worth it. read more

Watson is an anxious dog when outdoors--he jumps at strange (read: most) noises, hates busy intersections, and will tuck his tail between his legs at the sight of a stroller. After going to Bark Place for daycare for several months, however, he has become excited to walk there! He knows the route well and, instead of trembling or tugging at his leash, prances most of the way. This is a BIG deal for us, and we couldn't be happier to see him happy. Bark Place's staff has always been more than accommodating and welcoming to both us and Watson. They know him well by now, and will update us on his favorite playmates when we come to pick him up. Having them nearby has been invaluable for us, and Watson absolutely LOVES being there. He boarded with them over Thanksgiving weekend and had a blast. He's a tough pooch to tucker out, but when he gets home from Bark Place, he is all satisfied snoozes. All the employees seem to know every dog and his/her quirks--I would definitely recommend Bark Place to anyone seeking a friendly, trustworthy daycare venue for their pet. read more

We adopted Winnie a few months ago and quickly learned that she LOVES other dogs but takes a bit of time to warm up to new people - we figured daycare would be a great option for her. Bark Place is SUPER convenient from our house, came highly reviewed by our friends in the area, and has hours that work PERFECTLY with our schedules - we had to give it a shot! Also worth noting that their full-day daycare cost-per-day rate when you buy the 20 day package is LESS than what we were paying for daily 30 minute Wag! walkers! Winnie was nervous our first few times going, but after about a week, she now runs to the daycare gate and doesn't even look back at me! She comes home absolutely exhausted and just wanting to snuggle - and she's not an easy girl to tire out! Thanks, Bark Place! Our dog is quite young and was not at all interested in having his nails clipped. It was a constant squirming, howling wrestling match that rarely resulted in any kind of success. We started taking him to Bark Place, and the change has been wonderful. The very professional staff there really know what they're doing. They get him in and out in little more than a couple of minutes. After being there a few times for manicures, he is now much calmer and easier for all to handle. I contacted Bark Place regarding daycare for my overactive dog and the people there were so nice and kind over the phone. They allowed me to bring Bear for a couple of hours at no charge to see how he would fit in. This is a great little place and I do take Bear there for daycare when I feel he needs some extra exercise. When I pick him up in the evening he is very happy and is pooped once we get home. I also inquired about boarding since I thought I'd have to travel. Anthony was very accommodating and provided suggestions that made me feel so much better. Update: We just had our dog, Wally, boarded at the Bark Place for 8 nights, the longest we've been away from him. I was very nervous about leaving him, since we would be out of the country and unreachable. I know how silly that was now- he was in great hands! The staff at the Bark Place are all so friendly and reassuring, and they seemed to really love Wally and take good care of him. Even if they are just blowing smoke up my ass and tell the same thing to all the dog owners, it's still nice to hear! He also got a bath this time and looked so fluffy and smelled so good! I love it. I have being bringing my two Shih-Tzus to Bark Place for almost two years now. Not even once we had a bad cut. Their staff are always super sweet and attentive. My dogs used to shake a lot in fear with other groomers. They still don't want to go to do their grooming but at least they don't fear the place. Also George is the only one that tells me what a good boy one of my dogie is. No one else liked him before because of his constant moving. They give you 50% off for grooming on birthdays and presents on Christmas. Their food variety is awesome. Lots of healthy yummy things you will not find anywhere else.
