Solid 3.5 Star Review. We were a party of five and randomly stumbled across this cafe. The outdoor patio area looked really cute and cozy but we were seated indoors for the warmth. The chair my friend sat on was really dusty which lead us to all to double check our seats. Interior design and ambiance definitely felt like a local community vibe spot. It was a tough debate between omelet and a burger since the pictures looked really good. I opted in for the California Burger at medium rare with French fries and the burger was massive. The burger was huge but it wasn't really flavorful. 2 of our friends ordered the Healthful Tuna and one came with missing ingredients. The food was not bad; however, could use a little attention to detail. Service was good, the person that took our order was hospitable and knowledgeable. We have dined at the Barefoot Café many times. A couple of observations: Yes, the owner can be grouchy at times, but once he gets to know you, he can be quite friendly. He's a quirky kind of person, I wouldn't give it much attention. The other staff at the restaurant and both friendly and courteous. The restaurant is a pleasant, neighborly kind of place. More important, the food here is consistently good. And I mean, consistently. The ingredients are of good quality, including fresh fish, and organic vegetables. Further, the portions are very generous. And I mean, very. I don't know how they do it. The menu is very extensive, and you would expect some dip in quality across a rather large range of dishes. I do not eat meat, and cannot speak to those dishes. As for a number of dishes including fish, chicken, pastas, and salads, I say again, the food has been consistently good - both tasty, and wholesome. Considering the size of portions and quality of ingredients, I'd say that the prices are quite reasonable. Most dishes are served with warm corn bread. I did not expect restaurant in eccentric Fairfax to be this good, but there you have it. And any evening, when cooking at home is a burden, we pick up dinners from the Café, and.....problem solved. Nb I wrote this very favorable review because the restaurant merits the praise. Yet another wonderful meal and wonderful experience at barefoot! Tony runs a top notch restaurant and Ty, the waiter, is so personable and fun to talk to, and has impeccable service. We were looking forward to a delicious brunch Sunday at 10:00am. Unfortunately we were so disappointed. Details are: we entered- there were 5-6 workers (2 chefs), 3-4 waiters, 1-2 workers of unknown functions-- we waited 5 mins at our table- trying to flag down someone/anyone who could give us a menu- but all workers seemed disinterested in helping us (!!!). We then "learned" that the waiters don't help each other- ie act as a team to help the customer. We heard a lot of "i told "Your" Waiter that you want something (!!!) Then i ordered a surf and turf benedict- which was sloppy and tasteless- i mentioned this to our waiter and his response was to shrug his shoulders. At a Price of $29.99- i expected more service/action to an almost inedible entree(!!) Besides this- since the kitchen is in the same room with the patrons- the noise from the banging of the spatulas cleaning the grille, the deafening clatter of plates being Stacked, workers speaking so loudly TO EACH OTHER (!!)... the atmosphere was horrible- we were yelling across our small table to even hear each other. The pricing also is about 25-30% higher than other Marin County eating establishments--i am very puzzled about why this place has the ratings i had read before i had selected it to try. read more

Had lunch with my wife there yesterday. Sat in outdoor patio as the inside had a wedding reception going on. Lots of locals that seemed to be enjoying themselves. Our waiter, Tye (sp?), came to the table and I knew at once that we'd be having a great meal and an enjoyable time. The menu is vast and many items looked delicious. We both chose the Chinese Chicken Salad. Plentiful and very tasty. I had a lemonade which was a bit too sweet for me but was still enjoyable. I prefer a more bitter lemon taste so no fault of the restaurant. Tye provided us with some flavor of the town and filled us in on the happenings that were to occur the next day, Halloween. It was my first time coming to this place . Excited to try the banana walnuts pancakes. It was a early Tuesday morning. Literally 3 people inside. Unfortunately, the owner/ manager was a little to loud for a quiet breakfast, it seems like he was having a meeting with an employee and the conversation was just out loud. This is the third time we have eaten here, and we will not return. Where to start..... The food was mediocre, but the price was higher than most expensive hotels! I ordered the cinnamon walnut french toast, and my daughter ordered the fish and chips. I ordered a cappuccino and my daughter ordered a macha latte. The french toast was limp and flavorless. There was no noticable walnuts, and the cinnamon taste was almost not there. I wondered if they gave me their plain cinnamon toast. I asked my daughter to taste it, and she said she could detect a small taste of it. I took most of it home, and today it went in the trash. The fish and chips appeared to be from a manufactured box. They were small pieces and tasted ok, but but they looked very different than most restaurant fish and chips. A thin coating of some breading that was unrecognizable. Only two pieces arrived. The waiter might have overheard my comment ("wow, this was $25.00 dollars?") and he returned with another piece of fish saying "I forgot this piece". Frankly, I have never had that happen in a restuarant, and I reviewed restaurants in a previous career. But what really got me was the prices. My Cap was $7.95, and the latte was $9.95. The French toast I believe was $18.00 0r $19.99 and the fish was $25.00. Our bill in totall was $66.00 and change, not including tip. I compared prices of other breakfast places nearby. They were nowhere near as high, especially for the drinks. Even Comforts (a much more high end cafe) was less. I had a memory that I brought an intern of mine here last year, and they offered fruit with her meal. They did not mention the up charge. We were annoyed then. I understand the need to keep up with prices. But the food better be excellent, and this wasn't. I will go to the other close by breakfast houses like Lundy's, Theresa and Johnneys, or Comforts. Additional, update your menu on the web, it is not accurate by many dollars. read more

My review of the Barefoot Cafe will be positive for once! It's rare that I'm entirely impressed with a restaurant these days. The Barefoot Cafe just did NOT disappoint on ANY level. The decor, location, food, and service checked all of my boxes. The menu was also magnificent. I immediately wanted to make return visit to experience their breakfast, and the rest of the dinner menu... The service was what I seek from high end dining, and still find lacking much of the time. The gentleman assigned to our table gave us the perfect amount of attention. One of the owners even came out to chat briefly. Remember: this was a late afternoon on a no-nothing day. It wasn't a Saturday night at peak foot traffic. I think the one thing that stood out over everything else was the portion size of our meals. Goodness gracious! I had a great breakfast on my first visit here, a late Wed morning, as I was headed back home from a weekend away. Casual congenial ambiance but attentive to the food experience. Waffles are hard to come by. The banana and pecan waffle here was solid. Not crispy on the outside like some, but very delicious. The scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked (not underdone or brown and not greasy). They served pico de gallo and a green sauce as house condiments, a nice touch. The bacon that I asked to be well done was actually well done and that doesn't always happen at many places in my experience. The grapefruit juice was nice and fresh. The person taking orders was friendly and did a great job. Would definitely return any time of day next time I am in the area. Only things I can say stuck out as potential negatives were the exterior bathroom door that could use TLC (something I notice is very common unfortunately) and the old school tinny ceiling speakers that don't do justice to the upbeat music they were playing (could use an upgrade to something more pleasing than just mid and upper range).
