I have been dying to go to this place for a while and finally had an excuse as my partner was visiting town. We decided to stop by for weekend brunch and immediately fell in love with the relaxed and beautiful vibes. Our waiter was kind, funny, and attentive and provided us with quite a few good laughs throughout our meal. When it started to snow just as we were about to leave, he even offered to let us just hang around at our table and relax until the weather lightened up! The food was awesome! We saw there was a crab cake Benedict on the specials menu, but unfortunately it was sold out by the time we got there. No problem, I opted to have the Smoked Salmon Buckwheat Crepe which came with a little side salad and two poached eggs. The crepe was spectacular - savory and packed with smoked salmon. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked. And the salad was fresh and delicious due to their special maple vinaigrette which was unique and delightful. I plan to come back many more times! I have had this place on my bucket list for some time. We went during Restaurant Week and the specials looked great. We asked our server for her favs and she said the roasted chicken and cassoulet were the most popular so we gave those a shot. The cassoulet was such a cozy comfort food. White beans and carrots form the base of the skillet casserole topped with thick bacon, duck, and sausage. It was a tasty combination and one I was glad I tried. I loved the atmosphere. It was dimly lit and cozy, perfect date night aura. We found parking on the street right in front. Our service was excellent. The tables were a bit close but I guess we kept each other warmer on a very cold night. It was close to Jungle Theatre so grab some dinner before your next play. read more

Went to barbers for my anniversary dinner and was not super impressed. The restaurant is tiny and felt overpacked. We were sitting so close to the other tables. The staff were nice but our waitress spoke so softly we could barely hear here. The drinks were absolutely delicious! I got a French 75 and it was perfect. We also got the cheese plate as an appetizer and it was so disappointing. Two of the three choices were not good and it was very expensive for three pieces of cheese and some grapes. For entrees I got the steak frites. The frites were delicious and the steak was cooked perfectly but it was so salty my mouth hurt after eating it. This place is such a hidden gem! We hit up the happy hour (2-5 daily) and got the bubbly with charcuterie board for $36 truly no better deal! This is my second time to Barbette. This is 3.5 stars for service. The food is 4 stars. There was a good amount smoked salmon in the crepe and the salad was flavorful. I felt there's was little bit too much of the dill sauce in the crepe but it was still good. Service was slow. This is a place for chilling and taking your time with your meal. My friend had a work meeting at 11:30 and I didn't know that was case. I made a reservation for 9:30am and the outside awning covered up the restaurant name that I couldn't find to see where to park until I found a parking spot on the street. Then found out that they have parking in the back alley way. It was not busy and so we could spread out in the restaurant. It was getting to be too hot to sit outside. I wish I had more time in the morning to enjoy this place more add just chill like in most European style dining is too take your time to enjoy the food and the taste the flavor. Barbette has old world European vibes: dimly lit, unfussy but elegant, ample wine selection. It unfortunately doesn't offer much for vegans, but has a couple dishes. The brown rice and lentil bowl ($14) can be modified to be vegan. It's starchy and bland and gets boring after a couple bites. It's basically just a bunch of rice and some dry-cooked eggplant. The petit pan squash and risotto ($22) can be modified to be vegan and is more flavorful, with cheesy undertones. That said, this dish is literally also just a bowl of rice. There are few vegetables and no protein element (a chunk of fried tofu would have been nice, or maybe pan-seared seitan?). Barbette does participate in the Twin Cities Vegan Chef Challenge and offered a porcini gnocchi dish in 2022. It looked and sounded great, but they only offered it in August. If Barbette added a substantial vegan entree and one vegan dessert (that isn't sorbet), I'd visit often. As it stands, it's a nice place to get a drink or go on a date. read more

The company that handles large bookings and Trapeze (their private room)completely bungled my bestie's bridal shower. I will never eat here again! We reserved the Trapeze room or a table at the back 6 weeks in advance and Mary Beth the coordinator was so wishy washy with confirmation of my reservation and communication I had to make a backup rezzy online. When we got there we were told another party walked in an hour before we got there and were given the room so we could not access the room or have a table near the back to set up our games due to the current seating situation. Instead all they had was a small hollow table at the front door on a very cold day. We couldn't play any of our silly games or put out any of our slightly less appropriate decor. The waitstaff was amazing but the front of house had nothing to say and were not helpful or able to remedy the situation at all. Here we were on a day my friend has waited 45 years for and it was like they couldn't be bothered to respect a reservation. So disgusted and disappointed, no one even reached out or apologized. The food even took forever because of the party of 15 they sat in the room I reserved. Just a huge fail on every level and I wish I had never trusted them with my reservation. read more

What a wonderful restaurant I never set foot in! My wife and I showed up for brunch and chose to dine al fresco. It was a beautiful morning and it is always enjoyable to watch the bustle of the city the only downside was partway through they received a delivery and the truck was running right by us(oh well). When we arrived the hostess promptly sat us giving us the choice of inside or out. We ordered a cocktails which were great. For food I ordered the buckwheat crepe with poached eggs and added ham...it was great! My wife ordered the ham and gruyere omelet and it was perfection, light, fluffy deliciousness. FOOD: The food here is absolutely fantastic - we tried the steamed mussels for an appetizer (super tasty with the perfect amount of garlic - lots), as well as the shrimp scampi, steak, and half chicken. First time to Barbette and the food was outstanding!! We had the Shrimp and Pea Risotto and the Royale Cheeseburger, both were very very good!! The burger was perfectly cooked, medium well. The Risotto was very creamy and the shrimp were cooked to perfection. The cocktails: We tried the Aviation, Sazerac, Mezcal Last Word. We have quite an extensive home bar so we are very particular about our drinks, so I will have to be a little frank on the cocktail review. The Aviation could use no garnish, the cherry they used overpowered the drink. The Sazerac could have been a bit boozier. The Mezcal could have used either more Mezcal or a smokier Mezcal, such as Bozal Espadin-Barril-Mexicano(a very Smokey Mezcal). read more

Some of us fantasize about French food and some of us fantasize about French lovers. Most of us only get the French food, so it's important to fulfill our pathetic fantasies. Oh, Barbette.. I wanted you to be my mysterious French foodie lover. Filling my belly with cheese, butter sauces and seductive combinations. Unfortunately I got the equivalent of the classic online dating nightmare where the guy shows up looking nothing like his shirtless firefighter profile pictures. We started with cheese, obviously. Cheese = Life Other than the tiny slice of Brie the cheese was not French. The fruit compote was apple, not very spreadable or seasonally fitting for the summer. There were 6 grapes and 5 apple slices, 3 almonds and no partridge in a pear tree. The baguette was fine thank goodness, but overall cheese plate proportions and pairing were thoughtless. I ordered the Pea Risotto. I envisioned a rich buttery bursting risotto filling my mouth and making me do the good food wiggle in my seat. Instead I got watery white rice and undercooked snap peas with pickled onion that was completely out of the flavor pocket. I love picked onions, but the combo in this dish was imagined by a boring individual who reads instruction manuals for things they don't own and never really understood what tastebuds are for. Instead of happy dance food wiggles I was a slumped over state of disappointment. It was so unfortunate I couldn't even eat it, despite my friend offering me bits of her salad to jazz things up a bit. My friend's salad was good she said, but it didn't seem particularly French in nature, other than the price tag. Made a reservation online a couple days in advance for patio seating as they require reservations. Booking online was easy via Tock in which you can create an online profile for faster bookings in the future. Made my reservation for 4 people at 8pm. We got done walking around the lake around 7:30pm and was curious if we could check in early. Viola! Never hurts to check! The staff was able to get us checked in early and seated. Staff was fast and friendly. It turns out it was restaurant week! Almost forgot about that...so we ordered charcuterie, artisinal cheese, steak frites, steamed mussels and some creme brûlée's. I stopped into Barbette for an after-work happy hour with some friends. They have some spectacular happy hour deals, with a few $5-7 dollar cocktail and appetizers. I tried the French 75 cocktail and it was great and the price was even better! I also tried the frites and the steamed mussels. Great for a little appetizer to dinner. The dining area is somewhat small, but at the off-peak hours, it wasn't too crowded or loud. They also have a nice outdoor seating area. The service was great and very friendly. The croque monsieur was just a slapped-together ham sandwich with a lump of mornay sauce dumped on top, made with ordinary supermarket-level ham and bread. The "pommes frites" were just ordinary fries, cut so evenly that we knew they'd been frozen. The charcuterie plate also was nothing to write home about. It wasn't just disappointing, it was kind of shocking. Everything was edible, and that's about it. We felt ripped off. Our server, however, an incredibly nice and personable Mexican guy with a tattoo on his neck - he'll know who he is - almost made up for the mediocre food. I wish we'd asked for his name. read more

We had brunch here. It was wonderful. We sat outside at a lovely table on the sidewalk where we had friendly, efficient service and great food. It even had a good-looking couple roll up on a Vespa. It was charmingly Parisian. Scrambled eggs with truffle and a few mushrooms. Rarely do restaurants use the correctly-balanced amount of either truffle or mushrooms --typically too much of both; and too much truffle overpowers eggs. This balance highlighted the perfect-texture scramble so you tasted the eggs, too. It was wonderful. Served on top of baguette that was lightly grilled so that it also had the perfect, still-soft texture. With local greens on the side, lightly dressed with a light vermouth vinaigrette, made it into a plate of deliciousness. With it, I had a perfectly-balanced Corpse Reviver #2. (Equal parts gin, Lillet, Cointreau, and lemon juice, with a dash of absinthe. These, too, are typically spoiled because almost everyone uses too much absinthe. This one had that perfect hint of it.) And a cocktail cherry instead of a slice of orange finished this to Wow. It married with the truffled eggs "like peas and carrots." Sondra had their roasted Ferndale Turkey sandwich, with bacon added. (Do add the bacon --it's wonderful bacon, to boot.) Avocado, alfalfa sprouts, oven dried tomatoes, and saffron aioli, on multigrain --also lightly grilled. It, too was perfectly textured. This sandwich is perfectly balanced for a complex flavor par excellence. They use all local, "farm-to-table," free-range organic ingredients. And their safron aioli is jaw-dropping. Pomme frites, "extra crisp, please," were just the right degree of doneness. Dipped in that aioli made for as good as can be found in The Minneapple. And then their coffee is excellent too?! Barbette is an under-appreciated gem. . read more

My friend and I came here for brunch. I did not manage to try everything I would like to, but what I had was good! First of all, out of all things, the atmosphere and vibe were great, and it was a good environment for intimate conversations. Food-wise, my friend and I had the Croque Monsieur, the Quiche, some fries, and waffles. We also had a vanilla crème brûlée as dessert. Everything was well-made. My only suggestion is that the green salad placed on the side of both the quiche and the Croque Monsieur seemed more symbolic and conveniently placed on the plate without much work into it. Personally I would like to see the main food in a dish and the side occupying similar degrees of importance, if that makes sense. I think for people who would like to grab brunch to catch up with friends, etc., this will be a great place. I am sure there is a lot more food that I did not end up trying this time, too, so I am down to go back! read more

Carrot Cake review: Oh my God, it's all about the carrot cake. I don't need or want anything else just their carrot cake and that's what I did. I went in during brunch and ordered a slice of carrot cake to go. The cake was HUGE and I knew if it was as good as people said it was then I could not take it home with me. This was a no frills type of carrot cake. It had the plain cream cheese frosting without any carrot top icing or strawberry for garnish. Also, it had no raisens or nuts or shreds of coconut. I loved how simple it was because it was all about the taste: Moist, not too sweet, not too plain, and carrot fully blended into the flour. I knew I had to share it with friends and that is exactly what I did. I and four other friends comfortably indulged in this carrot cake and left no crumb un-turned. I am a lover or carrot cake and this one is quite delicious and makes my top 5 list for sure. read more

An old favorite from warhorse restauranteur Kim Bartman, Barbette has stood the test of time and may be her best creation. The funky-chic Art bistro interior should never be changed. I almost don't care about the food or drink but the French-inspired comfort food fare always satisfies even if it isn't memorable. The bar is the same. Service runs the gamut from engaging to aloof. Unfortunately this restaurant is tainted by Bartman's public record of longtime abuse of her employees, typified by the lawsuit filed by employees with the help of attorney general Keith Ellison resulting in a six figure settlement to partially cover unconscionable wage theft. Maybe your money is better spent elsewhere? read more

Perfect date spot, intimate setting for classy get-togethers with friends, a little dose of Paris in Minneapolis :) I ordered their shrimp scampi, and oh boy, it was yummy... The shrimp was very fresh and plump while the sauce had the perfect combination of creamy texture, butter, and a nice spicy kick from the chili pepper. For dessert, I had vanilla bean cheesecake, and the vanilla was such an excellent touch to the cake. It wasn't overpowering but a sweet and noticeable addition of flavor to the cheesecake.
