I waited to post this review to allow time for the bar owners to respond to my complaint, which they have chosen not to do. I post this review in the form of an open letter, the one I sent to Barbarella, edited for space.
Dear sirs:
I would like to bring to your attention an incident that occurred during my visit to your establishment. In the early morning hours of Sunday, March 20th, myself, my brother, and my husband were assaulted by your staff. I have included the details below.
On the night of Saturday March 19th, we were patronizing your establishment to take in some SXSW showcases. I had opened a tab after an order of one round of drinks that the bartender informed me cost $17.50. At some point later in the evening I ordered a second round. Upon closing my tab, to my surprise it was an even $50. I asked the bartender if I could see an itemized list of charges, but she told me that it was not possible and that there was nothing she could do about it. I reminded her that I only had two rounds at $17.50 each, at which point she admitted to me that my tab "should be about $40". Regardless of the bad math, I pointed out that either way it should certainly not be $50. It was at this point she again said she would not change the charge on my card, then proceeded to try to buy me off with a free round (I refused - we needed to drive home), then with free Red Bull (I also refused), and then asked me to return on a different night and ask for her to receive free drinks. At this point I really had no intention of ever returning to this place, and decided to drop it and take up the matter later with my Mastercard issuing bank. My brother, however, decided that this wasn't right and continued to ask her to produce an itemized list of charges while I got ready to leave. After about a minute of that discussion, she signaled for a bouncer to "get him outta here." Let me be clear: At no point prior to this did she or anyone else encourage any of us to leave. The conversation was never heated, there was no name-calling, no foul language used, no voices were ever even raised. We had no warning as to the assault that we were about to endure.
My brother, clearly understanding that she was done dealing with the matter, started walking towards the door to leave. At this point the bouncer came up behind him and started wrestling him towards the door. Instinctively I began following them out the door. The bouncer stopped, turned around and saw me, then shoved me almost to the floor. Again, let me be clear here: I was on my way out of the building, and was not physically interacting with ANYONE at the point when he assaulted me, nor at any point previously. I was not even talking. My husband, now fearing for our safety, grabbed the bouncer just as he was punching my brother in the small of his back with both fists, launching him fully into the street. (My brother is 6' 6" tall - you can imagine the force this took.) The bouncer then threw my husband to the ground smashing his face into the concrete. My husband's nose cartilage was cut completely through, and he was bleeding excessively. The bouncer then had to be restrained by your own staff and brought back indoors. At this point I was approached by drunken SXSW staff insisting on helping me straighten out the tab, which was obviously no longer of any concern to me. We spent the rest of the night at Brackenridge ER waiting for my husband to be treated. Due to the high volume of major incidents on that Saturday night, over six hours passed and a doctor still had not seen him; after 8AM we transferred from the ER to a regular family doctor who sadly informed him that his time window to get stitches had closed and that his only option was to have plastic surgery to fix the scar.
Violently ejecting peaceful patrons and issuing fraudulent bar charges might be part and parcel for an establishment such as yours, but in my world they are not. In my almost 20 years of frequenting downtown Austin clubs and in my several years working in them, I have dealt with a handful of swindling, shady bartenders, but I have never once had one tell me a charge was unwarranted and in the same breath boldly refuse to remove it. And I have certainly never seen such an egregious abuse of bouncer authority. To call him a bouncer is an insult to bouncers. Bouncers are security - they are there to keep the peace. This guy was a thug, and he was actively looking to fight, even after the three of us were ejected and tending to the injury of my husband.
I don't know much about the goals and standards of the Barbarella organization, but if you are looking to bring as much class to downtown as your building's previous tenant, you are well on your way, and Austin does not want you here. I plead with you to make this right. I plead with you to take whatever steps are necessary to make sure that such events never happen again. I plead with you to not be another scar on our beautiful city. read more
